Packing List for Eternity.......2007-07-15
Friends, when I die, at an absolute minimum, please pack among my provisions for the journey, the following tracks from this album: LOA House, Voodoo.
King Diamond - 'Voodoo' (Metal Blade).......2007-02-26
Somewhat over-the-top (but, in a good way), 1998 solo release by the notorious King Diamond. This looks to be his eighth solo outing. Put out around the same time as Mercyful Fate's 'Dead Again', but better. This CD covers some scary subjects like ghosts, witch craft and the afterlife. Tracks that I thought showed that Diamond still has it are "LOA House", the head-banging title cut "Voodoo", "Salem", "Sarah's Night" and the outrageous "If They Only Knew". Also noticed that King Diamond's vocals through out this fourteen track opus is really good. Well done. A definite should-have.
Mucic > Story .......2006-07-11
Musically, I don't have a problem with this record. The music (while certainly not at the levels of "Abigail" or "Conspiracy") is well done. That hasn't changed. If you follow King Diamond's records, you will probably notice quickly that the horror is not up to his usual strength. To be sure, I gave a lot of praise to the record "The Spider's Lullabye" despite the subpar story. But that was easier to forgive being that it was only a half length story. The music on "Spider's Lullabye" was more than enough to carry the record. While the music on "Voodoo" is alright, it doesn't seem to compensate for the so so story. Speaking personally, when I listened to "Abigail," "Them," and "Conspiracy," I didn't need to read the lyrics to understand the horror of what was going on. And when I did read the lyrics, I asked myself: "Weren't these records scarey enough already?" If you like King Diamond, then this chapter is acceptable. But if you're only looking for King Diamond's best, you will be alright with "Abigail," "Them," and "Conspiracy." (Perhaps "The Graveyard" as well.)
Best KD album in all senses.......2006-04-24
I'm a long time fan of KD and own all of KD and MF albums. And believe me, none of them is as rich musically and lirically as this one.
This album has to do with a mysterious mansion in Louisiana, and believe it or not, it had something to do with my decision of moving here. I was somehow interested in the mystery of the old underground Louisiana traditions and... superstitions.
It begins with Louisiana Darkness, a small introductory track that sets the mood for what's to come. Then it continues with the powerful "LOA house", with the great introduction line: "1932, North of Baton Rouge... Louisiana nights are darker than before" (I used a variation of that quote for some time in the msn). In this song we meet the main characters: David and Sarah LaFayette.
Then, in my opinion, two of the best tracks of the record. The hypnotic "Life after death" (great use of the keyboard and the vocal lines here) and the title track's voodoo drums, a great combination that makes this record an epic. In these two songs the main ghostly characters and their rituals are introduced.
"Salem" and "A secret" are just songs necesary to continue with the narrative.
Then, another great moment comes with "One down two to go" and "Sending of dead". The first one opens with subtle acoustic guitar chords that set the mood for what's going to be an "ill-fated day" and the the songs explodes histerically with the words: "from yesterdaaaaay!!!" Great song in every way, it gives a feeling of helplessness when Salem sings: "you used to be so beautiful, but now you're gonna die!!!" Then, "Sending of dead" is the perfect narrative complement for what was so eerily schemed in the last track. Salem tries to warn Sarah about the problem going on in her mansion but she doesn't listen, and leaves him with no option than the "sending of dead".
"Sarah's night" is the usual harpsichord-sound KD song. "The exorcist" is a song to continue with the narrative but also to introduce Father Malone into the story.
Then in "Unclean spirits" we can hear an exorcism ritual very much alike to the actual exorcist movie... KD should know that actually not in every exorcism the same phrase is repeated, usually the priest repeats some phrase he said that seems to be particulary annoying for the devil... in this case "The power of Christ compells you" is something that The exorcist's movie director found interesting, and KD just follows the line... a little clich? on this one.
"Cross on Baron Samedi" describes how Sarah now fully possessed attacks Father Malone with a crucifix.
Then the last two tracks only described what happened after this episode and the record ends. (I don't wanna tell you the end in case you don't know it).
Some say that for this record KD borrows something from Abigail, and that might be true, but anyway this story is much more complex and interesting and the characters more rich in personality.
Great album, so far nothing better.

Yet another concept album from King, musically phenomenal (actual voodoo styled drumming in some parts instead of normal metal style but fits well - don't panic though this cd is still METAL)... its sticks to the KD formula, little "intro" song, second song heavy as,conceptual story line throughout cd, hammer horror feeling throughout, however this cd does take several listens but then it grows on you... I like how the first track is "underplayed" in the last 2 tracks "if they only knew" and "aftermath" where we find the 'ironic shocks" on this storyline.... the only bad things with this cd is in ironically my fave song on the album "LOA" house how King uses several voodoo words such as "Hougun" and "Bogor" in an almost namedropping spirit...musically and vocally this is a phenominal KD cd the songwriting here is best in ages... basically this is where King gets back on track... If you've ever been a Diamondbanger but have tuned out this is the cd to get back on with...enjoy

In the mid '90s, Wall of Voodoo mainstay-turned-solo artist Stan Ridgway bid farewell to the major label treadmill via Drywall's masterfully dark debut and embarked on an indie career as the more historically-rooted, acoustically-centered singer-songwriter found of the compelling Black Diamond, Snakebite and Anatomy albums. The original Drywall concept ("a trilogy of apocalyptic documents") seemed intended to variously antagonize his then-label, subtly evoke his Wall of Voodoo past and offer outlet for his latent "mad scientist" tendencies. But Ridgway has completed that decade-spanning triptych with an album that's closer in tone to his elegiac modern solo work (his main accomplices here are also the same, keyboardist/vocalist Pietra Wextun and guitarist Rick King), if no less thematically provocative than DW's first installment. The infectious, industrialized zydeco of "Goin' On Down to the BBQ" revolves around a typically debauched Ridgway storyline, while elsewhere Stan variously stirs in jazz (the saxed-up "Fortune Cookies"), cinematic cool (the evocative "Somewhere in the Dark" and "Rain On Down") and even folk conceits both nautical ("Abandon Ship," "Robbers & Bandits & Bastards & Thieves") and Celtic (Wexstun's haunting "Bold Marauder"). "The AARP is After Me" and tipsy "Something's Gonna Blow" are filled with typically self-deprecating Ridgway wit, while the electro-edginess of "In Total Focus" and "That Big Weird Thing" contrast sharply with the stark beauty of the morally ambiguous ballad "Buried the Pope." Drywall closes out their first trilogy in rich, expansive style - and ultimately leaves listeners hoping they'll embark on another soon. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Um...wow........2007-01-11
I love Stan Ridgway - witness my extensive collection of CDs and ticket stubs. I think he and Peitra are national treasures.
However.....
I have to say I found this album very hard to get my mind around. I am no stranger to music that is (more than a little) outre'. And I am willing to give anything involving Stan a chance. Several chances. But I honestly didn't enjoy this album. (Sorry Stan)
But it won't keep me from buying the next one!
Righty likes track 16, whoot!.......2006-07-21
All of Stan's work has shown a deep suspicion of the industrial-military complex, heaped and blended with existential nihilism. I never took such a dim view of American life personally, but appreciated his artistic window into the darker side of society. For the record I'm a right-of-center, Republican-leaner who voted for Bush twice and I found track sixteen to be clever and, yes, a bit childish, but fun and I enjoy childish fun even when it steps on my idealogical toes. That being said the rest of the CD is delightfully quirky, loaded with imagery both dark and campy, and sprinkled with childish fun. And very true to Ridgway form this CD is yet another deadpan narrative description of the writhing scaly spectacle that is modernity's underbelly. It's kind of like David Lynch for the ears. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that I didn't feel it rose to the level of "Work the Dumb Oracle".
A Masterpiece of Strange / Pop Art for 2006.......2006-04-22
Continuing an on-again/off-again relationship with his Drywall side project that began in 1986 with Work the Dumb Oracle, the third album in Stan Ridgway's "trilogy of apocalyptic documents" isn't substantially different from his better-known solo work, at least on this 2006 release. His carnival barker vocals, bizarre lyrics, and shapeshifting cinematic soundscapes are in fine twisted form as the songs morph from the moody, bluesy harmonica-laced "Bury the Pope" to the more experimental subtle electronica textures of "Rain on Down" and the whimsical, Tex-Mex party atmosphere of "Goin' on Down to the BBQ." Co-Drywall conspirators/multi-instrumentalists Pietra Wexstun and especially Rick King are relegated to sideline status as Ridgway's distinctive vocals and lyrics dominate the proceedings. The diverse sounds combine aspects of Tom Waits (the percussive "The Alibi Room" sounds like an outtake from Rain Dogs), jazzy noir lounge ("Somewhere in the Dark"), Yello ("That Big Weird Thing"), and even world music ("Bold Marauder" is sung by Wexstun doing her best Grace Slick impression), but ultimately seem like Ridgway pushing his already elastic musical boundaries. At just over an hour, including a humorous bonus track that features sentences from George W. Bush speeches cut-and-pasted to mean something far different than what was originally intended, there is a lot to listen to here. Each track is overdubbed multiple times with layers of sound effects and instruments requiring repeated listenings to fully absorb. As with many Ridgway projects, the lyrical theme is obtuse but the music is so challenging, quirky, and innovative that the whole shebang is a mesmerizing musical trip. Anyone already a Ridgway fan will be thrilled, and open-minded newcomers might find enough of interest here to seek out his earlier, arguably more cohesive albums. Barbeque Babylon is a fun, often but not always lighthearted romp with the participants obviously enjoying themselves by painting a sonic palette the equivalent of '60s pop art. Part pastiche, part storytelling, and part experimental, the album finds Ridgway at the peak of his powers, creating music that demands attention even if at times it doesn't take itself seriously.
Track 16 is ridiculous.......2006-02-10
While I have Stan's full collection of solo stuff and love it, this album may not stay in my collection. There are some fantastic songs and truly innovating and amazinginly talented musicality on this one that we expect and usually get from Stan by the truckload. But I'm writing my comments primarily for the untitled #16 track. I'm not a republican or a democrat. Politics has nothing to do with it but the disrespect and childish editing of the President is embarrassing. The time, technology and (what they may of thought as cool) effort that they put in to making this stupid and over the top ridiculous word editing joke ruins the whole album for me. Perhps a few lines intended to make a point and reflect a measure of personal view would be "artistic" and acceptable but Drywall goes way too far with what they're saying here. A display of that much anti-american sentiment makes me think Drywall should move to Iraq and open up a recording studio there and tour the middle east, North Korea and Afganistan. Free expression, personal point of view and the right to say them are God given rights. But track 16 is just simply bad form, bad taste and childish. I would feel the same way if they did this obsurdity to Clinton as well. Track 16 isn't politics just stupid, really stupid.
Stan at top of form!.......2005-11-23
I'm here to tell you this is the best Stan Ridgway CD! A fan since the vinyl days of Wall of Voodoo, heard all the solo stuff (great, get it!), but this album is an absolute must buy. Killer stuff, classic Ridgway. The best yet!!

vintage Hugh Martin score a complete delight.......2004-12-23
LOVE FROM JUDY, based on Jean Webster's novel 'Daddy Long Legs', is pure vintage Hugh Martin. The show never made it to Broadway, instead enjoying a sold-out London season and an extensive provincial tour.
Jean Carson played Jerusha Abbott, an orphan at the John Grier Home who is mysteriously supported by a never-named benefactor. June Whitfield, Johnny Brandon, Adelaide Hall and Bill O'Connor round out the strong leading cast. Barbara Windsor played one of the orphans (for some interesting backstage reminisces about LOVE FROM JUDY check out Barbara Windsor's autobiography 'All of Me').
The Hugh Martin-Jack Gray score is quite lovely from what is featured on this disc (the recordings were originally designed to fit 4 sides of a set of 78's). LOVE FROM JUDY runs a scant 20 minutes, so the disc has been filled out with extensive bonus material.
We get Jean Carson singing "A Kiss to Build a Dream On", "Hug Me a Hug" and "Barrels and Barrels of Roses" (on the 2 former tracks she's joined by her then-husband Bill Lowe); Johnny Brandon singing 5 numbers including his mega-hit "Glow Worm"; and Adelaide Hall singing 2 great numbers. June Whitfield sings 5 numbers including two songs from GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES!
There are also selections from the Frank Loesser score of HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN; and a full-cast presentation of numbers from Disney's PETER PAN (both feature Jean Carson and Johnny Brandon).

It's a great cd, complete with wonderfully spun sungs. He creates an atmosphere that is very magical with his music. I am a new listener to the contemporary folk scene, and I tend to like he more popular musicians, Shindell, Gorka, Griffin. And Bill Bourne is definitely one of those musicians that can leap over from one genre and pull in poeple in that are new comeers and obtuse to the COntemporary folk scene. I can't believe that I am the first person to review this album. They play his songs all the time here on WUMB in Boston. Check it out. it's good music. I like Holy Holy, and Little Flowers. How apt, I guess Bill Bourne is a little flower himself, stepped over and passed by often without a glance. I was forced to buy his album because he isn't popular enough to be on the File sharing websites. Looks like all this file sharing is helping out those that are less then famous. That seems like a postive thing to me.
