About the Artist
Flora Reed is among a new generation of artists forging their way up through the ranks of the singer songwriter world; twenty-somethings who are coming up on the heels of Patty Griffin, Suzanne Vega, and Aimee Mann. Floras songs are fiercely written poetics that hint at the unknowable in all of us--not merely delivered, but sung with a voice that can softly lilt as well as it can confidently roar. Couple this with Floras evocative, attention demanding lyrics, and you have an artist who brings an irresistible mix to the world of independent music. Born in Japan, and raised in the D.C. suburb of Alexandria, Virginia, Flora grew up surrounded by the music that her father loved- western baroque and classical Indian music. But, it was while exploring his old reel-to-reel collection that she discovered Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Simon and Garfunkel. As her schoolmates listened to New Kids on the Block, Flora attempted to untangle the meaning in songs such as "A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall" and "Bird on a Wire." She moved back to Japan at age ten, to Germany at twelve, and then back to the States to finish high school and begin college in Maryland. She always sang, but didn't pick up the guitar until her final year of high school. It was at St. Mary's College that she began her musical career.
Flora quickly became a campus favorite, with a devoted fan base; playing frequently at coffeehouses and other student events. Upon graduation Flora headed for Northampton, Massachusetts, where she immersed herself in a part of the country brimming with a vibrant acoustic scene. Her first few years in Northampton found her working simultaneously for artist management, a record label, the Iron Horse Music Hall, and as a music publicist.
All the while, Floras true passion is making her own music. Her debut CD SETTLE DOWN, has been long in the making but well worth the wait.
Album Description
From the albums effervescent keyboard and drum driven opener "Flowers At My Feet" to the gentle acoustic guitar and cello of "Beloved" (based on the Toni Morrison novel of the same name), SETTLE DOWN is a set of songs filled with drifting melodies that are as passionate as they are delicate. Floras sound evokes acclaimed artists such as Beth Orton and Lisa Germano; artists who create sublimely urgent songs that are hard to categorize yet so easy to fall in love with. Lyrically, the songs are impressionistic yet literate, with plenty of room for the listener to walk around and take away whatever meanings resonate with them. With her first CD, Flora Reed will surprise you with the perfect blend of sparkling pop and evocative mood pieces. SETTLE DOWN debuts the voice of a new and distinctly true artist.
Settle Down, Music, Flora Reed, The voice of a new and distinctly true artist-- sublime and beautifully literate songs that are as passionate as they are delicate. A must have for fans of Suzanne Vega, Aimee Mann, and Lisa Germano.

Album Description
The three members of Young Widows emerged from the dissolution of Breather Resist with a new vision steeped in dark, brooding grooves and moody post-punk. From the reverb-drenched inspiration of Regulator Watts/Hoover to the bass and drums lock-groove perfected by Shellac and The Jesus Lizard, Young Widows gladly wear influences on their sleeve. The signature inventive guitar work is at its peak here, while the rhythm section lays down syrup-thick grooves, recalling The Melvins, Karp, and Nirvana as well as British post-punk a la Gang Of Four. Eleven songs of hypnotic, heavy, noise-rock anthems.

It's about time. If your a Jesus Lizard fan then thank these Young Widows for spilling your insides out. I'm curious to see if these guys can keep it up. It's flesh off the bone. Give a lick.

this is super aggressive, meaty, loud, pounding sonic annihilation based on heavy drumming heavily distorted bass, and chunky/and at times angular guitars. Reminds me of jesus lizard, shellac, and few other touch and go and dischord acts of the 90's. This is some serious stuff. brutal record of the year from a brand new band. Stand out's include tracks 1,2,5,7,8,9. this is serious.

Great, obscure old Berlin!.......2002-08-07
As a cast member on this album, I'm a little bit biased, but it's this is really a chance to get a listen to some really fabulous Berlin. This is Berlin's first Broadway show and has some great gems like "Have the Boys Around Me" and a bunch of great catchy tunes. It's a wide mix of Berlin and if you're a big fan, it's a great chance to hear him in still somewhat developmental stages. A couple songs from this show were later re-worked and put into other shows. It's also has a great feel for the period and shows the influences around the time he was writing: opera (Opera Melody), cowboys (I Gotta Go Back to Texas) and Hawaii (Honolulu Girls). It's a keeper!
Also on this CD is a great tribute to Berlin's counterpoint tunes. It's a mix of all three of the greats: Simple Melody, Old Fashioned Wedding, and Just in Love. Sung individually and then all three together! You won't get that anywhere else.

Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous Cool.......2004-07-11
Flora's voice haunts and jams. This stuff is music to walk through the air on. It's got smart and lovely (out the wazoo) lyrics with really mesmerizing and intimate pop verve. "Settle Down", "Flowers at My Feet", and her amazing version of Bjork's "Joga" are the immediately amazing tracks. The rest are deeply cool ... the whole album gets better every time I listen. I want more.
Sleeper hit.......2003-01-10
I picked up this album soley because it was produced by Dave Chalfant (of the Nields) since I had yet to hear of Flora.
At first listen I was not dissappointed. There is something about her voice that is strangely attractive in a moth to a flame kind of way. You can't help but be enveloped by her voice and her songs.
Nearly everyone I've played this for asks who this is and comments on how much they like it. Granted the first cut, "Flowers at my feet" has the most alternative radio (best term I can think of) kind of appeal but the rest of disc is still catchy.
Lyrically Flora is clearly accomplished if not somewhat heady. She goes for depth rather than breadth in her lyrics which are more like poetry than your average neo folk tune.
This disc is definitely worth your time.
Great! Great! Great!.......2002-09-26
I bought this CD when Flora played an opening set in Boston, where I fell in love with her voice and lyrics.
I've been playing this CD every day since and highly recommend it!!
Almost Undescribable.......2002-09-24
A beautiful compilation of songs that seriously reach out and touch your heart. You won't be able to stop listening or get the songs out of your head. I haven't come across a CD as good as this in a while. It's so real, so personal, and so inspiring... it's almost undescribable.

Customer Reviews:
A fascinating look at a tortured genius.......2002-08-21
Naxos continues to do a wonderful job with its "Life and Works" series. Quite some time ago, we had a Life/Works of Mozart, one of Chopin and then two more, Liszt and Beethoven. he latter are even better packaged than are the earlier sets, with a thick booklet that offers us essays on the historical background, the position of the composer in his time, a look at the major works, a listening plan, recommended readings, personalities, a calendar of the artist's life, a glossary, and a discography. This booklet is worth the price of the set alone.
Now we have two more entries in this amazing series, again written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann: "Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky" (8.558036-39) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 5 min. and "Johann Sebastian Bach" (8.558051-54) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 34 minutes. (Please see my comments on the Bach set on its webpage.)
Was there ever a sadder composer than Tchaikovsky? Siepmann practically introduces us to the child in his cradle and covers his 53 or so years of torment over his music, his sexuality, his impossibly hopeless marriage his strange relationship with Mme von Meck, and above all his music.
To make the recording more vivid, the producers have assigned professional actors the roles of the composer himself (Malcolm Sinclair), the women in his life (Karen Archer and Teresa Gallagher) and the men (Stephen Thorne and David Timson). There are many music examples (drawn, of course, from Naxos recordings), some of them considerably longer than necessary. For example, the "Sugar Plum Fairy" is heard at length to represent all of the "Nutcracker" score when several shorter samplings would have served the purpose better. But this has been true for the entire series, and perhaps the producers will rethink this aspect.
