A piece of history.......2006-06-03
Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.
A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19
I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

Customer Reviews:
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

Customer Reviews:
A terrific collection of Sousa pieces.......2006-06-09
John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) was one of America's best known composers. And he composed a wide variety of works, mostly for wind band. As a wind band member, I've played many of his marches.
You won't have any difficulty finding albums of Sousa's marches. But what about the rest of his works? This fine album includes a few and the Nonpareil Wind Band, under the direction of Timothy Foley, does an excellent job of playing them.
If I had to choose just eight of Sousa's pieces in order to introduce an audience to Sousa, here is what I would select:
El Capitan
Sound Off
With Pleasure
The Crusader
The Free Lance
The Gladiator
Semper Fidelis
The Fairest of the Fair
As you can see, half of these eight pieces are on this disc. You'll have to look elsewhere to find the others.
I highly recommend this excellent album.
A Grand Sousa Concert, Indeed.......2005-01-31
I'll come right out and say it. I love John Philip Sousa. I find his work addictive, joyous, and often very surprising. This is an album that explains why - it's perfectly arranged and performed, and the selections included could not be any better.
First of all, it's important for folks new to Sousa to understand that no, sir - he didn't compose only marches. Rather a shame that nowadays those are almost exclusively what he's legendary for - they are gems, indeed, but there's far more to the man than what we so often hear in high school bands, hometown parades and national events. Sousa could charm us with playful foxtrots, delight us with unique tangos, caress the ears with heavenly waltzes, and humor us with whimsical cakewalks. Thank goodness this album proves this truth.
Appropriately, the Great American Main Street Band plays each piece with strength, elan and respect - it doesn't get any better. The finest selections include "The Pathfinder of Panama" - a truly rousing march; "The Gliding Girl" - a tango, dedicated to his daughter, Priscilla); "The Presidential Polonaise" - a most noble dance; "La Reine de la Mer" - one of my favorite waltzes, so lovely; and "With Pleasure" - a cakewalk in the most deleriously fanciful fashion. Of course, each piece amongst these stong points is just wonderful, as well.
In all, this is just a flat out great album. Required listening for newly-minted Sousa fans, as well as members of the Old Guard - that would include me. It's a joy to hear, and will become a frequent resident in your CD shuffler - I guarantee that.
Thumbs up.......2003-02-05
Good, crisp rendering of a fine selection of Sousa pieces. Conductor Timothy Foley is well respected.

Wow....better than I first thought.........2007-04-12
I came across this CD (from a "Relaxation" series) by accident and thought, oh no, just another compilation of classical music tidbits---and taken from TV commercials/shows yet---oh, spare me! But how wrong I was. Despite its boast of being, "The Most Popular Classical TV Themes in the Universe" title (and because the price was reasonable for a 2-CD set), I bought the CD and was amazed by the quality of the recordings. I was disappointed when neither the manufacturer nor Amazon.com provided a listing of the artists on the recordings; as after hearing some of the tracks, I wanted to buy the artists' complete renditions. My favorite track on this CD, Debussy's "Clair de Lune," is performed so movingly, so stirringly, so hauntingly, that I wish I knew who recorded it. Not all tracks are arranged for orchestra. An example is Handel's "Largo from Xerxes," which is arranged for harp-and-flute, an arrangement which I found delightful and reminiscent of times in the 18th century when the elite held their salons and provided such music at these events. There is no singing on any tracks; it's pure instrumental. I didn't purchase my copy for "relaxation," as the series promotes, for the CD is just as enjoyable to play anytime, anywhere, and especially with a quality headset!

Bill is a True Artist.......2003-11-15
Bill is a true artist, who sings deep from his soul. His lyrics are folk song poetry at its best. Thanks, Bill for this delicious CD!
BILL HUDSON STILL PICKING.......2000-03-28
BILL'S LATEST BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF WARM SUMMER NITES AND DASH BOARD LITES. THE STEVEN FAYNE EARL OVERTONES ARE GREAT. THE THING THAT MOST FOLKS NEED TO DO IS SEE BILL BRING THE MUSIC TO LIFE. HE IS A MASTER SONG-SMITH AND PUTS HIS HEART INTO WHAT HE SEEMS TO LOVE MOST AND THAT IS WRITING ABOUT US. YES YOU AND I. I,MYSELF HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF NOT ONLY HEARING THE CD BUT ALSO PASSING A SONG AROUND THE ROOM WITH HIM. BEING A MERE BEGINNER AT THIS CRAFT, BILL HAS BEEN KIND AND SUPPORTIVE OF MY OWN WAY WITH A SONG. THANX BILL FOR THE MUSIC. I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEW CD COMING OUT SOON.
Good Stories and Good Music.......2000-02-23
I've had the opportunity to see Bill play live and it was great. His CD, "Liberty Street" is definitely worth getting. The great music and his ability to tell a story through song are an excellent combination. If you like Americana/Folk music then this is a must have album!
A great new experience for me.......2000-01-09
We had the opportunity to see Bill Hudson live on New Years Eve 2000. He played in Annapolis MD. It happened by chance that we stumbled across his appearance. We were looking for face-painting for our 7 yr. old son and the line was too long. We sat down and watched his set. We fell in love with his singing and stories. Our 7 yr. old loves him as well. We bought his CD "Liberty Street". Now, we can't wait to play in when we get into the car. I say it was a new experience for me because I was not into folk music too much. After seeing Bill, I will try to follow him as much as I can. He's a great person to get to speak to as well. We certainly wish him the best of luck in his musical career. Can't wait to see him again.
The CD is great, if you get a chance to see him live, do it!.......1999-07-04
Some of the lyrics on this CD are truely inspired. ". . . Gaugain was drinking colors first thing in the morning . . .", from "Gaugain's Dream", is one delightful example. All of the lyrics are heartfelt and real life. The music is great, driving blues rhythm woven together with the vocals.
