Look out world -- here comes "Candy & Dirt," Heather Eatman's long awaited second record. Out as of late spring 99, it's got plenty of bright-colored pop. But underneath it's sugar coating, a sharp storytelling sense and striking point of view swirl together to deliver more existential grit than you'd find on the bottom of Charles Bukowski's shoe.

While ALRIGHT and SOME GIRLS trade heavier content for pure ear-candy, USED TO BE A NICE GIRL is a bouncy radio-song about a hooker and TOO TIRED TO BE ELVIS imagines the King of Rock-n-roll's death scene, complete with a chorus of Percodan angels. The tale of a boy and his first job, DRIVING DARLENE concerns a young driver for a seedy car service who falls for his mysterious passenger. And in BLACK LINCOLN BOMB, a lost tourist panics over a slow, twisted cocktail lounge vamp featuring an impossibly demented slide guitar. "It's like Billie Holiday gone through the looking glass," Eatman says.

Producer Stewart Lerman (Jules Shear, Sophie B. Hawkins, The Roches) wraps Heather's voice in arrangements that are timeless -- not trendy -- and powerful in their simplicity. As in her live appearances, her distinctive singing and guitar playing are defining elements that draw the map for the rest of the instruments.

Other players on the album include: Steuart Smith (Shawn Colvin), Dave Tronzo (John Hiatt), Joe Bonadio (Duncan Sheik), Mike Visceglia (Suzanne Vega), and Bill Dobrow (Dave Navarro) as well as fellow recording artists Kevin Salem, Lee Feldman and Mark Johnson.

Candy & Dirt is the first release on Impossible Records, Heather's own record label. ARTIST BIO: Heather Eatman is a singer and songwriter with spiky hair, a Kool-aid-red electric guitar and 50,000-watt smile ... and she's come to kick your ass. And she's traveled all the way from Jacksonville, TX to do it, too. That's where she was born -- not far from the Louisiana border, where the music turns raw and primitive. "That stuff really got into my blood," Eatman says, "Growing up in my house, we listened to Bach and Mozart, "West Side Story," Barbra Streisand -- but that devil music was definitely floating in the air the whole time!"

"Candy and Dirt," Eatman's second CD, is full of pop injected with that deeper, darker magic. "I deliberately set out to make a record that would be tougher than the first one," Heather says, "Not in the sense of genre -- I wanted it to be a braver record. This record compared to the last one is like the difference between a nice studio portrait and

a slightly blurry, but much more revealing paparazzi shot.''

Heather left Texas at age seven, eventually ending up in Pennsylvania, where she was a misfit who "felt like a kid from outer space." She spent much of her time in her room listening to the dog-eared vinyl LPs she checked out of the local library. "I gravitated right to the Rolling Stones and Muddy Waters records! Okay, the Muddy Waters record -- they only had one. But thank God for that one ..." she says. She had also started teaching herself to play guitar and was clumsily beginning to write songs.

Deliverance came when, after enduring an unusually miserable high school experience, she was accepted on a much-needed scholarship to Parsons School of Design and moved to New York City's Hell's Kitchen. "I was only seventeen. I didn't know anyone, had no money -- and I was so happy!" Finally more at peace, she found herself delving into music to a degree that bordered on obsession. Soon she would start doing her own club shows.

One night when playing at the East Village watering hole, CB's 313 Gallery, Heather was discovered by the tiny indie label, Oh Boy Records. The meeting resulted in her first offering, ''Mascara Falls,'' dubbed one of the top ten records of 1995 by the Washington Post. Overseen by producer Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Paula Cole, Lou Reed), the record garnered her critical attention, serious AAA radio play (with appearances on Vin Scelsa's "Idiot's Delight," and the nationally syndicated "World Cafe" and "Mountain Stage" radio shows), a West Coast tour opening for John Prine, and an electrifying appearance on ''Late Night With Conan O'Brien."

Still based in New York City, Heather runs the business of her own label, IMPOSSIBLE RECORDS (of which "Candy & Dirt is the first release) out of her tiny, lopsided Greenwich Village apartment. But her favorite part of being a recording artist is still the songwriting. "I love the element of surprise in it -- the fact that I can't really control or predict what I'm going to write next."

Heather looks forward to hitting the road in support of the new disk. She's earned a reputation for being an intense and surprising live performer warming up the crowds for Donovan, Jill Sobule, Billy Bragg, Roseanne Cash, John Hiatt, Patty Griffin, dog's eye view, David Poe, Amy Rigby, Freedy Johnston and Rufus Wainwright. She is regularly a featured artist at music festivals, including: CMJ, INTEL and SXSW. Most recently, she sang a stripped-down version of ALRIGHT on VH1's ''Midnight Minutes.''

CHEAP-O EDITION WITH NO LYRIC SHEET OR PHOTOS.......2007-01-01

Music- excellent. Different, not better than the first album. A turn to the left (they'd been listening to Kraftwerk-ShooBeeDoo, anyone?)

Sound- a bit flat sounding remaster, but better than the original cd editions.

In the shadow of their first album.......2006-10-27

Like the progression of Ambrosia's first two albums, this second album by the Cars features much more refined production and some fresh sounding, innovative uses of the latest technology, and also a slightly less personal touch at times, and resulting lack of conviction. (It does have a better cover than Ambrosia's 2nd album). Like the Cars' first album, this is meant to be fun music, party music. In my opinion, the best songs here are *slightly* better than anything on their first album (or anything they've done since). But there are some lesser moments too, where it sounds like they're on autopilot. These songs have a kitschy humor to them - especially the brilliant "You Can't Hold On Too Long", which captures the era. Those of us who remember the 'New Wave' craze have a hard time listening to this song without smiling. "It's All I Can Do" is an underrated gem, beautiful harmonies, arrangement, melody! "Let's Go" is a fine uptempo rock song with good synth solos and a Beatleish guitar riff that makes the bridge to the chorus. The slightly lesser song "Since I Held You" still has a very good guitar solo that develops over the song. But the rest of the album, though still very good, and not having a bad note or dull moment, lacks the punch of their first album.

not as brilliantly-conceived as the classic debut, but a highly enjoyable sophomore album.......2006-08-25

I somewhat disagree with those who say that 1979's "Candy-O" is a carbon copy of the Cars' debut. Granted, it's not a drastic departure by any means, but the vibe is distinctly different--the rhythm guitars generally get pushed to the background and sound brittle; Greg Hawkes' synthesizer work is more prominent; and Elliot Easton is given more room to shine with his brilliant lead guitar work. The result is an intriguingly claustrophobic listening experience.

All the songs here are written by Ric Ocasek, and it's a fine batch indeed. A couple of the tunes are forgettable, particularly "You Can't Hold On Too Long" and the wimpily-harmonized "Since I Held You". And there's also the annoying, forced-sounding, albeit mercifully-brief experimental number "Shoo Be Doo". But otherwise the album is extremely pleasing, with great tunes such as the lovely mid-tempo ballad "It's All I Can Do"; the stipped-down, yet neatly textured and hook-heavy pop-rocker "Double Life" (great licks from Easton); and the riffy, ominously rocking "Night Spots". There are minor gripes you could make here and there--"Let's Go" feels kinda disjointed and insubstantial, the title track feels a bit TOO 'hip' for its own good, and the uptempo "Got A Lot On My Head" suffers a little from the overly cheesy 'Farfisa' organ, but these same tunes are still stuffed with irresistibly catchy hooks.

All in all, not as consistent or brilliantly-conceived as the self-titled debut, "Candy-O" is lots of fun regardless.

Hot album and even hotter cover!.......2006-07-26

I don't know which I enjoy more; the great music on this follow-up to the Cars first smash album, or the amazinging hot girl on the car looking like she's just begging to be taken!

Hard Candy is, most certainly, just another Counting Crows album. But it's difficult to imagine that there's ever going to be too many. For a band that formed during the grunge-dominated early 1990s, Counting Crows did something remarkably brave--though they helped themselves to the same legacy of 1970s and '80s FM radio rock as the Seattle groups, they chose not to subvert it with any punk influences. Counting Crows were determined to play Steve Miller and Tom Petty and Bruce Hornsby at their own game, and Hard Candy is the fourth astonishing album that has resulted. Counting Crows have now settled into a template with which they clearly feel comfortable--simple but elaborately orchestrated songs, buffed and polished to a high sheen, which serve as a glittering backdrop to Adam Duritz's lyrics. These, now as ever, are chiefly concerned with excitingly unattainable women and the roads he travels to get to or away from them. He tantalizes, as he often does, with specific names and places, but is never so solipsistic that the songs are robbed of a universal appeal. --Andrew Mueller

Never Gets Old.......2006-05-28

When you're a parent, it's that rare and special CD that your kids can wear out *for* you. HARD CANDY is definitely a favorite of both my children. First, my now seven year old fell in love with BUTTERFLY IN REVERSE (as much as I loved it several years ago, even I'm sick of that one!) She would say, "I'm Mary Ann." Later she proclaimed that Adam Duritz was her best friend. Good girl.

All of that is to say that I have listened to this CD more times than probably many die hard Crows fans (of which I am definitely one!) and most of these tracks still never get old. Although AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER is a true Crows touchstone, for me this is the one that will always hold the most special place in my heart. I highly, highly recommend the CD as one to jump into the Crows experience with--and for older fans who might not have it, don't miss out. A MUST TO OWN!

It's not just that i'm a HUGE Counting crows fan. It's just that this album is like ok I'll be honest "AMAZING!!!!!!!!!" I like the way they put some feeling into "Black and Blue" and made a rocker version with Vannesa C. on "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Miami" boy is that amazing.

For a CD I don't feel is Counting Crow's best effort, this is still a really good album and brings lots of listening enjoyment. Everyone had heard their cover of "Big Yellow Taxi" which is a very strong song, but not the best on the album. Even the debut single from this album, "American Girl" is only average for this disc. Great for any Counting Crows fan.

Great Sax, so-so vocals.......2006-12-19

Candy sure can play her butt off when she wants and she wanted to several times on this album. Those tunes are a joy to listen to and get 5 stars.
On the down side, there are the vocal songs which just didn't make it for me and forced me to detract a star from the rating.
Since I bought this used for a couple of bucks, I consider it money well spent but whether this CD will make it over to my "frequently played" stack is conjectural.

Candy's First Bow.......2006-06-07

Candy Dulfer was getting known as a player (and yeah, a good-looking player) when this CD was released in late 1990. I have always felt that it was designed to capitalize on the popularity of "Lily Was Here". Curiously, when released in Europe (I was living in Oslo at the time), the original release didn't have "Lily". As a result, one was forced to judge the CD without the song that brought her to the public. There are moments that the CD seems tenative--I do remember that she was getting a real major push at the time; "Lily" was in rotation on MTV, she was doing commercials and playing a lot of major concerts (Knebworth the weekend Freddie Mercury died comes to mind). I always had a feeling she was trying to establish what her sound was with "Saxuality". To my ear, she was more comfortable in the faster tunes--the title track and "Jazzid", "Heavenly City". There was a sense that she was feeling her way along with the slower material to me. But still, this was a good beginning for someone who was (I believe) 21 years old at the time.
I recommend this CD CD obviously because of "Lily" (which was put onto subsequent reissues of "Saxuality")--a must for anyone who collects Candy--but also because of how it flows. She might be tenative in this first venture, but one can sense an oncoming storm from the girl--and that's been proven out over the years both on media and in concert.

A listening experience like no other.......2005-09-13

The first time I exeperienced Candy Dulfer's music was on the Batman Soundtrack back in 1989. The song was Partyman by Prince and at the time I found myself focusing more on the person playing the sax instead of Prince's singing. Little did I know it was a woman playing sax and boy could she play. I later found out that woman was Candy Dulfer and a few years later I picked up this album after hearing the incredible track Lily Was Here. This track alone is worth the price of the CD but the rest of the album is just as good. Candy Dulfer plays with such passion and sexuality that it stirs up emotions within you. Listening to her music is like being transported to another time and place. Candy Dulfer is a great musician who does not get the attention and respect that she deserves. I highly recommend this CD and her other titles as well.

Dave Koz. David Sanborn. Grover Washington. David Benoit. Kenny G. All names that are recognizable in the world of smooth jazz. Yet, where is Dulfer???

This 1991 release, featuring the hit "Lily was Here," is comparable to anything released by the aforementioned gentlemen, with Dulfer showing her skills on scorchingly fast tunes to mid-tempo "saxual" seductive numbers to downright funky stuff.

Highlights include the title cut, "Jazzid," "Donja," "There Goes the Neighbourhood," "Mr. Lee," and "Home in Not a House."

But, why doesn't Dulfer get the "props" reserved for her masculine competition???

It's too bad that it appears the male-dominated ranks of saxophone players doesn't seem to have enough room for one deserving female!!!

Fine pop jazz album.......2004-05-25

There are so many female sax players in the smooth jazz music industry these days.Candy is the sweetest player among them.Moreover her funkness is strong and pure enough to allure the listeners.Her musical core is the vivid HIP HOP VIBE which can be seen on the street.This album cuts out her best moments.
And her pop sensibility and her sweet & powerful funkness combine with good balance.This is her best album,I guess.Her groove oriented musical prowess is so infectious.Check this out.

My first from these guys..........2007-07-10

...and from the first blast, it was the best! I admit it was a little noisy hearing Crystal come through the stereo, but by the end, with the lead hook wrapping up the tune, I knew these guys were exceptional. It only got better. I worked back from here, with New Day Rising my second album from these guys; another must have. This is not just punk, this is song writing, performance, and production of the highest caliber from any genre. 10 Stars, from one of my all time favorite bands.

Mixed feelings........2007-05-01

Why do I have mixed feelings about this record. Well, when I bought it in 1986 my girlfriend had just dumped me and it's Husker Du's first Warner release. Both were pretty traumatic. I had heard "Sorry Somehow" on the local college radio station and already had two prior Du records (tapes back then) and naturally went to the local Camelot to buy Candy Apple Grey. When I saw Warner Bros. on the box I was shocked. Anyway, I was pretty sure Husker Du was going to make me feel better and they did. There was a song for all my wildly varying moods. Everything from anger to bitterness to melancholy self pity. This is not Husker Du's best work but it is a very solid work that is a clear step in the evolution of Husker Du. I wish they had kicked out another one like this instead of slapping together the totally regrettable Warehouse Songs and Stories.

Punk Rock Heresy And A Masterpiece........2006-10-08

Punk Rock Rule No. 1: To ensure credibility never sign to a major label.

In1986 Husker Du did just that by signing with Warner Bros. and releasing `Candy Apple Grey'. For numerous reason this is the ultimate heresy for any punk rock fan or band. The most significant reason though would be the belief that a band had decided instead to pursue the `almighty buck' instead of their previous musical vision. In almost all cases the music is the first to suffer by the fact the music is toned down significantly in order to shift units.

Husker Du had been signed to the seminal S.S.T. records, which is quite possibly one of the greatest independent record labels ever. While Husker Du were there they released `Zen Arcade' and `New Day Rising' which is still regarded by hard core fans to be their best and I have no argument with that because it's true. However I differ with most fans when it comes to `Candy Apple Grey'.

`Candy Apple Grey' is a fine collection of fuzzy pop punk songs. While the album does not contain the same level of hardcore fuzz that previous albums had there is still plenty to ensure no commercial potential. What I feel is always overlooked is the fact that underneath all that fuzz on their original albums is great songs and that is what made them great. The difference is that `Candy' has some of Husker Du's finer crafted pop songs, which you can also hear a bit more clearly. If that makes me a punk rock heretic then so be it because I love this album and think it's criminally neglected. So while it lacks the credibility of previous albums it's still worthy of your attention.

To those who are not familiar with Husker Du buy this album because I think it is an excellent introduction to the band. After that buy `Zen Arcade' & `New Day Rising' or just buy all three now because all three are worthy of a place in your collection. Grunge and the musical revolution of the 90s would not have happened without Husker Du.

This was Husker Du's first album with Warner Bros., having adopted a totally mainstream sound. I like their later SST material (New Day Rising, especially), and some of their earlier stuff ("In a Free Land," "Diane," "Gravity," "Amusement," "Chartered Trips," "Pink Turns to Blue," "Statues," etc.) but I find the final era of their career incredible! I consider Candy Apple Grey as well as Warehouse: Songs and Stories to be their most solid albums. Pretty much every track here is amazing, especially Grant Hart's songs. Whereas, I tend to prefer Bob Mould's music to Hart's on the early Husker albums, Hart really emerged as a excellent singer-songwriter on Flip Your Wig through Warehouse. Three of my all-time favorite Hart tracks are here. Bob Mould was getting rather introspective on this album, perhaps he was already looking ahead to his brilliant Workbook solo project.

"Crystal" (Mould) 3:28: One more angry, noisy, pre-Flip Your Wig-style song before diving into the mainstream sound.
"Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely" (Hart) 3:29: Excellent single and one of Hart's best. Addictive track! I don't know about the line "I don't want to know if you are less than lonely," but it's such a great sound, who cares?
"I Don't Know For Sure" (Mould) 2:27: My favorite Mould track on this album. Very catchy. Killer drumming by Hart.
"Sorry Somehow" (Hart) 4:25: Another excellent Hart track. I love the organ sound and Mould guitar solo. Hart's vocals are great, too.
"Too Far Down" (Mould) 4:37; "Hardly Getting Over It" (Mould) 6:02: Two slow, depressing tracks by Mould. A nice change-of-pace, but two in a row is a little much, especially considering how long they are. They tend to drag, but they are not bad songs by any stretch. I'm not sure what was going on in Mould's life when he was writing these, but he was certainly getting out some dark emotions: "I wish that I just could die or let someone else be happy by setting my own self free." "Hardly Getting Over It" is so depressing to be almost comical, especially when it gets to the line "Grandma, she got sick, she is going to die." I know it's not meant to be funny, but that line always cracks me up.

"Dead Set on Destruction" (Hart) 2:59: The title would make one think this song is really hard and heavy, but it's just a straight-forward, light rock song about a guy trying to get to his girlfriend but all the means of transportation are grounded (I'm not sure if he really means he's "dead set on destruction," the sound of the song makes that line seem exaggerated). Not as stellar as Hart's other tracks here, but it's a nice little catchy number.
"Eiffel Tower High" (Mould) 2:49: I don't know what this song is suppose to be about, but I really like the sound and you gotta love the line "She walked out to the lobby for a box of Junior Mints." I find myself singing along to the chorus "And I scream `Mary Eiffel Tower Hiiiiiigh!'" without having any idea what I'm singing.
"No Promise Have I Made" (Hart) 3:39: Another Hart masterpiece! A beautiful ballad with piano. Love it!
"All This I've Done For You" (Mould) 3:09: The album ends with a good, solid rocker. This is definitely an album to set to "Repeat All" without having to skip a track, unless the two middle tracks are too much of a downer.

Long Island's Soul for Real is in the tradition of bubblegum soul groups from the Jackson 5 through New Edition to Immature. The title track of Soul for Real's debut release, Candy Rain, broke through as a top-five pop hit and is symptomatic of an album full of bouncy, catchy melodies buoyed by sweet, skillful singing. Is mad hot and very well done. It was easy to see from the very first note that Soul For Real had the goods and delivered them. With finesse, class and style no bumping and grinding or suggestive lyrics were needed. Just a heartfelt longing and sincerity that they brought into each and every song. Obviously "Candy Rain" was where it all started for these 4 brothers and they let everyone know that Soul For Real had arrived and could get down with the best of them. It's amazing to have someone that young with the vocals that Jason delivers in this song. The next hot joint being "Every Little Thing I Do" which had a very dancable beat to it and featured a SFR member taking the lead vocal reins this time and doing it with a cool and confident swagger with another well done video. The guys showed folks that werent some one hit wonders out for a quick buck.

With other very noteworthy tracks like "All In My Mind" with a heavy beat that resonates throughout the track and superb vocals once again by the guys. "If You Want It" was another hit off the album as well featuring their sisters-Nicole & Desiree on background vocals and Heavy D providing the hot lyrics this album just kept right on rolling. "I Wanna Be Your Friend", Jason delivers heartfelt vocals letting that certain someone know what they mean to him and the guys providing stellar backing vocals as well, its another not to be slept on track. Most interesting track would be their cover of Bill Withers song "Ain't No Sunshine" but you wouldnt know this because its handled with class and integrity. "Spend the Night" is sung and done well by Andre its a slow burner and adds another element to the cd overall.

"I Don't Know" follows the previous song and again. Its one that you can't skip at all. It's the longest song on the cd but you dont feel that at all. Its just enjoyable to listen to and i do just that. "If Only You Knew" is a cover of the Patti Labelle and i know it bears repeating but Soul For Real handle this song with care and breathe something new into and the vocals well you just have to hear them especially Jason towards the end of the song. You'll know what i mean when you hear it. With "Thinking of You" closing out the song its simple and all but well done brings to a close a stellar CD that still gets mad play by me and a worthy purchase for anyone that didnt get "Candy Rain" for whatever reason.

I remeber back in the spring of 1995, Candy Rain was a huge hit for Soul IV Real. Going to the middle school dances and hearing this song would be the highlight of the night. The follow up song Every Little Thing I Do which sampled The Gap Band was another huge smash, but for some reason their parent label MCA seemed to focus more on Immature.Soul For Real had good production due to Heavy D and Kenny "G-Love" Greene manning the group behind the scenes.

This album is 10 years old and to me, it STILL sounds good. I remember when I first heard "Candy Rain" on the radio. I was deeply drawn to it. For one thing, I liked the beat a lot, knowing was Tribe Called Quest's "Check The Rhime" beat. The lyrics were real sweet and I loved it. Then "Every Little Thing I Do" was released as their next single. I remembered how nice the video was, with the people on skates, skating around them as they sang. One of my favorite songs off of this album in addition to the two above is "I Don't Know." This song is soooooo pretty. This album will always be a classic to me.

If the three letters of this band's name look familiar, just rearrange the first two. That's right--Alpacas Orgling is an homage to the orchestral sweep of '70s hitmakers Electric Light Orchestra. What's so compelling about these ten songs is how they capture the spirit of that earlier music without coming off as retro or nostalgic, even while directly referencing Jeff Lynne's arrangement, production, and writing styles. (The lyric "I can hear the cellos singing" in "Distracted" is certainly a tip of the hat in that direction). LEO have impressive credentials: assembled by Boston-based Bleu, a.k.a. William James McAuley III, the members include Andy Sturmer of Jellyfish, Tony Goddess of Papas Fritas, and Mike Voila of the Candy Butchers, whose past works make them dovetail perfectly. Though all brand-new originals, the set sounds like a greatest-hits collection. (And buried at the end, unlisted, is a cover of ELO's "Don't Bring Me Down.") I don't even own this CD yet but I can give this a 5-star rating just from hearing some of these songs on Pandora through my stereo system. "Goodbye Innocence" and "Distracted" should have Jeff Lynne fired up about putting ELO back together again, and he should get Bleu to collaborate! The very best albums are the ones that you look forward to playing again and again because of the way the music grabs you initially - the tunes mentioned above do that in just the same way ELO music did in the mid to late 70's. I'll definitely be getting the disc before it goes out of print - music this great tends to disappear after a while. I sure hope these guys do a second album.

Love this album! Yes, it has all the Jeff Lynne touches and that's why I love it. My son would never listen to my old E.L.O. albums. He loves this album and now likes a few E.L.O. songs because they sound like this album - go figure. Loved the extra track after "Sukas" - nice touch. Fast forward and you'll find it.

This album is very good. Buy it, you'll dig it. It's like ELO/Wilburys/Harrison/Orbison and everything else that Lynne's ever touched. It's VERY good.

The main reason I'm digging this record is because it has the return of Andy Sturmer from THE COOLEST band ever- JellyFish. JellyFish should've been absolutely huge, yet they weren't. Great songs. Great vocals. Great players. Apparently lame record company or artist management. Not to mention timing. Right when Jellyfish hit, Grunge reared it's ugly head. After two fantastic albums, Jellyfish fell apart. Then Andy vanished for years. He's only heard briefly on this album, but it's SO great to hear his voice again. I hope to GOD that he keeps recording.

A refreshing listen!.......2007-03-24

Okay, I bought Bleu's "Redhead" directly from The Man Himself at a Toad the Wet Sprocket concert at the Myrtle Beach House of Blues several years back. I LOVED it. I enjoyed it so much, I remembered Bleu's opening act more than the actual Toad show. So I had been eagerly anticipating this project. I was not disappointed! The sounds are fresh, fun, and addictive listening. I only wish he would do his "secret" songs as a series of short blanks before the actual music rather than a 20 minute (or so) pause between the last song and the bonus. I generally love the last songs on his album, but don't often add them to my playlists as it just takes up too much time and always throws me off when I'm listening. The quality of the music is FANTASTIC, though. I ripped this album to my computer immediately after getting it, and probably listened to it 10 times in the first day. The kicker though, is that it's still the first album I add to my playlists for day-to-day listening. Now that's staying power!

Leroy Anderson's most famous piece is The Syncopated Clock, which became a well-known television tune in the 1950s. Anderson, a native of New Haven, Connecticut, was one of those composers who new his limitations exactly, and never wrote beyond them. He was a master at orchestral miniatures: short, tuneful pieces of musical fluff--but very high-quality fluff. Anderson lavished as much attention on one of his miniatures as Wagner did on his monster operas. They are the musical equivalent of Fabergé eggs. Leroy Anderson's music is best equated with the visual works of Norman Rockwell. Anderson, like Rockwell, paints mini-portraits, slices of life, into his musical creations, and with great success.

With this CD, is a compendium of 25 of Leroy Anderson's vast output and each of them, suprisingly, is a gem in and of itself. Anderson is a master of melody, creating the whimsical and the heartfelt. I was amazed to find that a short horn melody in "Horse and Buggy" could move me emotionally and so easily. One concern at purchasing this CD, was that his music might become trite and tired, especially with repeated listening; but Anderson is inventive in melody and he always mixes his songs up with unexpected syncopations and jazzy interpolations, not to mention the unusual battery of percussion needed to visualize the various animals, horse rides, and other crazy situations Anderson puts his orchestra in.

Leonard Slatkin and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra perform all of this music with the right gusto needed to portray Anderson's version of Americana. The only thing missing, perhaps, is the unbridled energy these works create in a live environment. While "Bugler's Holiday" and "Clarinet Candy" are played with great alacrity, the spark of the moment is lost on a recording format. Notwithstanding, this CD is an excellent choice if you can't get the live experience, excelling in musical quality, and quite frankly, is a lot of fun. Compare and contrast this CD with other Leroy Anderson collections under Arthur Fiedler, Leroy Anderson himself, as well as a Naxos release, and you will find this CD can hold its own rather easily.

Fine but lacks the last ounce of vitality.......2005-05-10

This is a fine Leroy Anderson disc. No one happening upon this disc will likely be seriously disappointed. But wait! Try the recording conducted by the composer himself or the one by Arthur Fieldler before you have any last word. They both have so much verve and vitality that the music literally leaps out of the speakers. The difference hits home immediately after such numbers as Fiddle Faddle or Bugler's Holiday begin. Coming back to Slatkin, you will probably feel that his interepretaton is a bit on a sedate side. However, Slatkin brings wonderful warmth to slower numbers and has the advantage of modern digital recording. The choice is yours.

A Gem Of American Music.......2004-07-11

Leroy Anderson is certainly one of the memorable and popular of American light music composer and this CD of his music really shines with the strains of the St Louis Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Slatkin. Simply magical. Mr Slatkin plays the music as close as Leroy Anderson intended to and not distorted any arrangements of the music. The album opens with the opulent 'Belle Of The Ball' and it waltzes ever so beautifully in digital stereo and sweeps you to an imaginary ballroom and completely swoons you. The ever popular seasonal piece 'Sleigh Ride' is stil a delight with the young at heart. The other titles in this superb CD are the immortal 'Blue Tango', the serene 'Serenata', the dreamy 'Forgotten Dreams' and the title track of the CD, the playful 'The Typewriter'. Though this album can't compare to the original Leroy Anderson albums and the evergreen Boston Pops with Arthur Fieldler, it is a fitting tribute to a gem in music that is Leroy Anderson.

A Great Recording of a Lovable American Composer's Music.......2004-04-08

I've always loved the music of Leroy Anderson. It has a magical quality that tends to pull a person right into the piece. For example, who, when listening to "Sleigh Ride," does not imagine going on a ride through the snow in Vermont on a winter's day? Titles such as the" Waltzing Cat," "The Syncopated Clock" and "Belle of the Ball" all sound as their titles imply. While the music could be termed `light classical," musicians playing the pieces have to be versatile as the solo parts for works such as "Bugler's Holiday" and "Clarinet Candy" easily demonstrate.

I will have to admit, when it comes to Anderson's music, usually no one beats the Boston Pops, especially under the direction of Arthur Fiedler. For many years Anderson was a collaborator of Fielder's and many of the Pops best known arrangements are those of Anderson. Perhaps this is why the Boston Pops performances of Anderson's music have an authentic feel to them. Yet if there is a close second to The Boston Pops' performances, it would be this collection by Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony. Slatkin has a love and appreciation for the music and lead the orchestra in a competent and enjoyable manner.

This collection includes many of Anderson's favorites such as "Blue Tango," "Phantom Regiment," "Trumpeter's Lullaby," and "Fiddle Faddle" as well as many of Anderson's lesser known works. Which make the collection a real treat.

A whimsical pick-me-up.......2002-09-02

The collaboration between conductor Arthur Fiedler and composer Leroy Anderson gave birth to the unique sound of the Boston Pops Orchestra. Anderson was without peer in writing works for "light" orchestra: short, often whimsical, always pleasant pieces for symphonic ensembles. One of Anderson's trademarks was coming up with creative ways for the orchestra to portray common sounds from the outside world. Anderson's two best-known pieces employ this technique: a trumpet simulates a horse's whinny at the end of "Sleigh Ride," while woodblocks indicate the rhythmic imbalance of "The Syncopated Clock." Although Anderson never became a household name, many Americans are probably familiar with several of his other works, including "The Typewriter" and "Blue Tango."

This CD features Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony, but there is another great CD of Anderson's works by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops. While both recordings are great, I give the edge to this CD. While Fiedler naturally has a better feel for Anderson's music (most notably on the "Sandpaper Ballet" and "Jazz Pizzicato"), Slatkin has recorded nine pieces not found on the Fiedler CD, including the delightful "Phantom Regiment," "First Day of Spring," "Forgotten Dreams," "Horse and Buggy," and my personal favorite, "Saraband."

This recording is a pleasure from beginning to end. I often find myself playing this CD two or three times in a row (and sometimes pressing "shuffle" after that) because Anderson's relentlessly happy music makes me feel that everything is right with the world.
