Salute to America.......2006-07-27
Very similar in quality and music to I Love A Parade and a very upbeat reminder of why we are a patriotic nation. The arrangements and quality of the songs are great.
A good choice but..........2005-06-29
It is not the best CD that I have bought but it is an honest one. The orchestration is good, the choice of tunes is excellent and the tunes are well played. As you know, it is always difficult to say : I like it or I hate it because hearing a CD is a question of personal point of view. In my case, I may not say that I like it or I hate it, I prefer some other orchestration but it us a good CD.
Ho-Hum.......2005-06-08
I wanted some rousing marching music. This album is half asleep. The sound quality is poor. Apparently Mr. Williams writes better music than he conducts.
"Boston Pops".. Alway's do the Job!.......2001-10-03
John Williams/Boston Pops.. Salute to America.
And they do! They salute America! This is a wonderful C.D
Battle Hymn of the Republic, is great..
New York, New York, will bring tears to your eyes!
12 renditions in all..
All these are performed wonderfully, and well worth the money!
I would recommend this to anyone who loves patriotic music, it will stir the heart and soul of Americans....
Full-Spirited.......2000-09-02
I'm a classical music/opera person for the most part. But I find this CD entralling. Even the organization of the CD is ideal-almost like a symphony--with the rousing Candide Overture and the musical medleys at the beginning, the patriotic songs as the B section, and the Dixieland and other music from American musicals to finish up. And I particularly like the orchestration of the medleys. A wonderful CD.

Customer Reviews:
Title fraud.......2007-04-11
I was very dissappointed with this CD.
It is only the "songs of" - very few sung by Woody himself.
Not what I was seeking - a CD by Woody alone.
Buyers should check this CD out very carefully first, make sure the artists and songs are what you want.
Woody Guthrie's colleagues make a tribute album in 1972.......2005-08-11
There are two reasons why calling this album "The Greatest Songs of Woody Guthrie" rather than some variation on the greatest hits idea makes sense. First, Guthrie was out singing these songs before there ever were any Billboard charts to help defiine exactly what constituted a hit. Second, although this album starts with Guthrie himself singing "This Land Is Your Land," clearly his most famous and most popular song, the track shifts to the song being sung by the Weavers. Guthrie sings a few songs and few duets, but mostly his songs are sung by other artists. So what we have here is a tribute album, originally a double-album now on a single CD, that represents some of the best first and second generation folk singers who followed in the path blazed by America's troubadour.
The first generation would be those artists that actually got to play with Guthrie, which would be not only the Weavers with Pete Seeger (the artist who most closely followed in Guthrie's footsteps), but also Cisco Houston, Sonny Terry and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. The next generation is represented on the album by Odetta, Joan Baez, and Country Joe McDonald. Yes, there is an authenticity to hearing Guthrie sing his songs that nobody else can touch, but there is something to be said for other artists replacing his rawness with more of the inherent beauty of his songs (the same way Peter, Paul & Mary did for Bob Dylan). The track information above is incomplete, so here is who sings what on "The Greatest Songs of Woody Guthrie":
1. "This Land Is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie/The Weavers
2. "Do Re Mi" by Cisco Houston
3. "So Long, It's Been Good To Know Yuh" by The Weavers
4. "Pastures Of Plenty" by Odetta
5. "Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)" by Cisco Houston
6. "900 Miles" by Cisco Houston
7. "Roll On Columbia" by Country Joe McDonald
8. "Hard, Ain't It Hard" by Woody Guthrie & Cisco Houston
9. "Dirty Overhalls" by Woody Guthrie
10. "Riding In My Car (Take Me)" by Woody Guthrie
11. "Ship In The Sky" by Cisco Houston
12. "The Sinking Of The Reuben James" by The Weavers
13. "Rambling Round Your City" by Odetta
14. "Jesus Christ" by Cisco Houston
15. "When The Curfew Blows" by Country Joe McDonald
16. "1913 Massacre" by Ramblin' Jack Elliott
17. "Talking Fishing Blues" by Ramblin' Jack Elliott
18. "Curly Headed Baby" by Cisco Houston
19. "Jackhammer John" by The Weavers
20. "The Great Historical Bum" by Odetta
21. "Pretty Boy Floyd" by Joan Baez
22. "Buffalo Skinners" by Jim Kweskin
23. "Hard Travelin'" by Woody Guthrie, Cisco Houston & Sonny Terry
My favorite track is Odetta's "Pastures of Plenty," simply because it best represents how far you can go with Guthrie's music from its folk roots and make it work. When you listen to Cisco Houston do "Do-Re-Mi" you are moving a notch up on the authenticity level, and with the Weavers singing "So Long (It's Been Good to Know You)" and "Jackhammer John" you get a real sense of how these songs were popularized. Of course, everytime you actually get to hear Guthrie sing on one of these tracks, such as the duet with Houston on "Hard, Ain't It Hard" you want to go listen to one of Guthrie's own albums, so those tracks tend to be a bit intrusive given the overall theme of the album.
Not everything will sit just right with you. The tempo of Country Joe McDonald's "Roll On Columbia" is just too slow for me, and I have to admit I was surprised that Joan Baez is not the one singing "Deportee," because her cover of that song is one of her better ones. But you look over the play list and it becomes clear that the old vanguard is not letting the new kids have many bites of the apple here (strange to think that in 1972 when this album first came out that Baez would be restricted to the second tier on an album like this). But whatever faults you might find with some of the tracks, the overall idea and execution and exactly what you would want to find on an album like this. There are several solid Woody Guthrie tribute albums, and this would have to be considered one of them.
The best stuff is a 6, but some drag it down.......2002-10-08
Great material in some definitive versions, but a few weaker ones as well. I have never found Joan Baez's voice appealing; maybe I can't get past her politics, but that warbling vibrato gets on my nerves. And though one wouldn't want to over-represent Cisco, his Pretty Boy Floyd is among my favorites of all his recordings. Ramblin' Jack can also ramble elsewhere as far as I'm concerned.
But the passion and commitment and fire, back when folk musicians really did think they could change the world for the better, shines through. Inspired musicianship and great material; very, very, very good stuff. A great intro, not just to Woody but to a few other forgotten talents. Go check them, expecially Cisco Houston, for the most authentic voice of America you'll hear.
Possibly the best Woody tribute album made so far..........2002-09-27
This has a nice variety of Woody's material and a nice collection of performers, some who were friends of his, not just admirers. I have grown over the decades to prefer Woody's own singing, or interpretations by Cisco Houston and Ramblin' Jack Elliot...whole albums worth. But especially for a beginner in the lore and legend of Guthrie, this is a great starter set.
OUTSTANDING for Guthrie fans and the as-yet unconverted.......2000-07-30
I bought this album for the Woody Guthrie content, I'm a big, big fan of Woody's life and works. Some of the other artists' versions of his tunes, especially Odetta's, damn near moved me to tears. This is an absolutely beautiful collection. There's nothing as moving as Odetta singing "Sometimes fruit gets rotten and falls down to the ground... there's a hungry mouth for every peach as I go ramblin' round." You just know she felt it with her heart.

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

That Daddy-O Daddy! is an exceptional record worthy of listeners who span the generational spectrum ought to come as no ground-shaker. Forget, for a moment, that this is a Woody Guthrie tribute--a designation signaling that whatever's to come, it'll be electric-blanket cozy--and focus instead on the talent that producer Frankie Fuchs pulled together here. There's the glorious rough stuff of Taj Mahal; Billy Bragg & the Blokes' robust riptide; Cissy Houston's graceful vocal sway; and the back-porch warble of Ramblin' Jack Elliott, among others. It's a meandering but easy-to-follow recipe of master interpreters, in other words, and one that's not afraid to intermingle ingredients. Add to that the tingly thrill of being on the receiving end of raw material mined from folk music's dear, departed pop (six unreleased, unrecorded, and in some cases unfinished tracks poke up), and you can't help feeling a little awed. Cue this up for kids as young as 2, as the whirly-twirl of tracks like "Tippy-Tap Toe" and "Little Sack o' Sugar" will set them to swooping, swaying, and singing the way Woody would've wanted. Houston's "Sleep Eye" and Bragg's "Dry Bed" soar--one's as warm as the other is high-spirited. These 16 tracks, though, are to be savored for the simple joy with which their creator so deftly dashed them off. "Howdy Little Newlycome," Guthrie's own recitation of a wonderment-filled ditty he recorded in his kitchen in 1951, caps off a perfectly executed disc that pours its heart out in the name of a plainspoken genius. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
just wonderful.......2002-05-07
It really is as good as the other reviewers say. I got this for the Jimmie Dale Gilmore tune, but I burst out crying with the Syd Straw number. There's a range of styles and emotions, but all of them top-notch.
A must have!.......2002-01-09
A wonderful CD to introduce to children of all ages!!
A treasure for the whole family!.......2002-01-05
I bought this CD for myself, having heard one of the songs on the radio. I now plan on sending one to each of my three grandchildren. These songs are not only fun, they speak to children and adults alike. It is quite apparent that Woody Guthrie wrote these songs with lots of love, and an understanding of his children's feelings and fears. Taj Mahal and the other artists that perform the songs do a great job. I definitely recommend this one!
A "must" for all Guthrie fans.......2001-12-16
Daddy-O Daddy! is an impressive and entertaining collection of fifteen recordings for young listeners composed by the folk music legend Woody Guthrie and performed by a series of outstanding artists. A "must" for all Guthrie fans, as well as highly recommended for children and their families the selection range from Wood Guthrie's performance of Howdy Little Newlycome (2:38), to Kim Wilson's performance of New Baby Train (6:03); to Cissy Houston's Sleep Eye (5:40).
an amazing collection of songs.......2001-12-07
Whether you've got a "little newlycome" at home or not, say howdy to this collection of artists performing rare Woody Guthrie songs. My favorites:
"Want to See Me Grow?" -- Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore
"My Daddy (Flies a Ship in the Sky)" -- Syd Straw -- this song should be the national anthem for airplane travel!
"Dry Bed" -- Billy Bragg. Too much! A trippy song about potty training.
Get this for all the kids you know.

Muleskinner Blues, volume two of the four CD series The Asch Recordings, is important not for its treasure trove of Woody Guthrie originals, but for its peek at the Okie troubadour's own deep roots. Muleskinner collects many of the old songs--"Danville Girl," "Stackolee"--that Guthrie knew and loved from his younger days. These are songs he learned at his mother's knee, at picking parties, and in the hobo jungles; the songs that he would later turn into his own with new lyrics, licks, and arrangements. Selections range from the maudlin "Put My Little Shoes Away" to the hardy "Johnny Hart." Altogether this sprightly collection is an important part of Guthrie's fascinating story. Great notes from historian Guy Logsdon, too. --Michael Ruby
Album Description
The songs on this recording, the second in a series of four, represent a selection from the vast storehouse of American folk and country songs that Woody Guthrie learned and incorporated into his early radio career and song books he sold on the air. In the early 1940s, upon coming to New York, Guthrie and frequent partner Cisco Houston recorded hundreds of songs for Folkways Records founder Moses Asch (160 alone in 1944). This series represents the best of these historic recordings. Muleskinner Blues highlights the non-original material that Guthrie recorded for Asch and includes American folk song standards, many of which became part of the American folk song canon due to Guthrie's influence. Running time 67 min, 40-page booklet includes historical and biographical notes on Woody Guthrie. Compiled and annotated by Jeff Place and Guy Logsdon. "Monumental stuff" --CMJ New Music Report

The songs that influenced Guthrie..........2006-03-10
Woody Guthrie influenced loads of singers, songwriters, folk singers, poets, activists, and storytellers. In turn, he also had his own influences. When he popped onto planet earth in 1912, nineteenth century culture, with its vast repertoire of popular songs and stories, still lingered in people's everyday lives. Some of the songs Guthrie grew up with date back to that previous looming century, and he recorded many of them later in life. This second volume of Moses Asch recordings compiles some of these songs as well as other traditional songs Guthrie picked up in his wanderings throughout the 1930s. Many of them also showed up on his popular California radio shows. Guthrie penned none of the tunes on this disc, but he arranged most of them to his own style and added his own lyrical touches here and there. Nonetheless, his indefatigable style shines on every track.
The title track, "Muleskinner Blues", shows Guthrie taking on a Jimmie Rodgers song (also known as "Blue Yodel #8). But Guthrie, unlike Rodgers, rarely yodeled (though he yodels with gusto on "Bed on the Floor"). The stylings of the immensely popular Carter family instead influenced his development. And many of Guthrie's early melodies came from Carter family compositions. Folk music tended to work this way. Tunes and lyrics radiated through the multitudinous regional music scenes scattered throughout the country. The composers and origins of some songs remain forever obscured in murky mystery. But some musicians won writer's rights through the legal system. Recording technology truly changed music forever. Guthrie came of age in this era, and so borrowed many songs and tunes for his own purpose. This wasn't unusual.
Some of the songs nonetheless do possess recorded histories. "Who's Gonna Shoe Your Pretty Little Feet" traces back to a Scottish ballad from the 1790s. And the heartstring tuggers "Stepstone" and "Put my Little Shoes Away" date to 1880 and 1873 respectively. Some songs have eyebrow raising origins. "Take a Whiff on Me" comes from an era, according to the CD booklet, "...when opium and cocaine could be purchased at the drug store, and songs about cocaine, like 'Rye Whiskey' about alcohol, were known nationally." The song celebrates the sharing of a good snort between pals. Times change.
Guthrie also played fiddle, but his skills apparenly remained somewhat unremarkable on this particular instrument. Three tracks nonetheless feature Guthrie's fiddling: the rousing "Sally Goodin'", "Hen Cackle", and "Rye Straw".
Accompanying Guthrie on many of these tracks is Cisco Houston (Guthrie even backs Houston on the Biblical "Sowing on the Mountain"). Their long partnership lasted for over a decade and helped spread the popularity of folk music. The influence of these songs on them, and their subsequent influence on twentieth century music remains incalculable. Out of this era evolved country, folk, and eventually rockabilly. Most modern music has its roots in folk music and African-American spirituals. This great collection of songs emphasizes the folk side of the spectrum, though many of these songs do originate from spirituals ("Little Black Train", "Bed on the Floor", "Stackolee", "Crawdad Song", and the haunting "Train 45"). Though most know that Guthrie influenced such twentieth century musical giants as Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, this CD offers a rare and underappreciated glimpse at the songs that influenced Guthrie.
Country as well as folk........2002-03-17
I am glad to see that certain folksingers such as Woody
Guthrie are now also considered country singers. After all,
some folk music is traditional nonpopular country music, and
some folk music is not country music.
One of the best.......2000-08-30
I bought this CD to complete the Asch set of 4, not especially enthusiastic about it because I knew that none of the compositions were penned by Guthrie. I'm not sure what I was expecting, exactly - maybe square dance tunes and cornball folk songs. In fact, the disc attests to Guthrie's excellent taste in "traditional" music. These songs are memorable, funny, melancholy, weird and delightful, among other things - here is simplicity without schmaltz or stupidity. Guthrie's performances are generally adequate, often inspired, and some tracks offer rare opportunities to hear Woody play the fiddle! Of all the Asch recordings, this disc is the most fun through and through - a Dust Bowl Bacchanale.
Classic Folk Music.......2000-06-18
This album is a must for any fan of folk music, acoustic blues, or country/western. The songs are all excellent. Guthrie plays an integral role in american music, and this album shows some of his influences. There are no original songs. The liner notes are great. They often mention the influence of the Carter family on Guthrie, and some of the songs were done by them. Guthrie is often with Cisco Houston; some songs are solo, and Sonny Terry occasionally plays. Guthrie's music is essential, and hopefully with two recent tribute albums more people will listen to him, rather than only having heard of him.

ANTHEMS FOR THE PEOPLE!.......2000-08-08
As a folkhound from a very early age, I will add my plaudits to the mix. The songs, lyrics and performers will delight those fortunate enough to have this collection. Woody Guthrie was the voice for the people, the voice for the issues that shape this world today. His timeless classic, "This Land is Your Land," should, in my opinion be, the national anthem. Our lives are made up of symbols and the importance of those symbols, e.g., religious icons, flags, emblems. The reason I would want this for the national anthem is because it is one that speaks to the nation and its people as a whole; it is an inclusive message. As much as I respect the feelings of those persons whose life conditions included the "Star Spangled Banner," I was never able to appreciate that song. Key penned the words from an old English drinking song and the references to bombs and rockets kill any peaceful image in this song. "This Land is Your Land," on the other hand speaks to a gentle nation. "Pastures of Plenty" brings to light the issues of migrant workers. Woody Guthrie is the balladeer of the world. His is a multigenerational appeal (my grandparents, parents and I LOVE him) and his message brings all persons together. Please, treat yourself to this collection. It is a worthwhile investment.
Better than the more-easily found album.......1999-10-03
To cut to the chase, Vol. 1 is superior to the 1988 release for two reasons. First, "This Land is Your Land" is sung in its entirety on this album by Guthrie. Second, this album contains the Country Joe version of Tom Joad, as significant as Joan Baez's version of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." Other reasons to buy this album are, I believe, self-evident.
