Editorial Reviews Growing up, Ruth studied flute, music theory, and guitar. She sang in a number of folk groups as a teenager and continued to perform as lead singer in each combo. Singing, writing music and playing flute introduced her to a number of opportunities to travel to various countries of the world with Shekinah, a Christian performing arts company. She toured England, Holland, and traveled with the group to various destinations in North America before joining them for almost a year in Israel, where she performed with the troupe throughout the country. Ruth produced her first Album of original songs at age 22. Awake North Wind was created at Master's Workshop with co-producer Doug McKenzie. Working as a singer/dancer/actress in the repertory theatre troupe The Inner Stage, Ruth also wrote songs for the company, and led workshops with children , teenagers and adults in the performing arts. Ruth played flute, sang, played keyboards and wrote music for the reggae band Skyless and the Clouds. She formed a new band with lead singer Mikie C. (of Tuned in Radio) called Soul Food and produced with Mikie an EP of groove music called Spectacular. When the Blues Brothers Band came to Ottawa, (with Dan Akeroid and James Belushi) in 1994, Ruth was invited to sing as one of their three back-up singers. They called the three singers The Natural Queens. Inspired by inner reflections and hopes for humanity, Ruths new CD called The Borderlands was released on her own record label, Jesse Records in 1999. The songs from The Borderlands are all original (music and lyrics)some songs inspired by A Course in Miracles and The Bible. The music on the CD is enhanced by the performances of flautist Ron Korb, guitarist Ray Hickey Jr., bassist Steve Lucas, drummer Larry Crowe, cellist Daniel Domb, keyboardist John Cleveland Hughes, and blues guitarist Buzz Upshaw. Ruth co-produced the CD with Paul LaChapelle at Quest Recording Studio in Oshawa, Ontario. On The Borderlands Ruth sang all lead and back-up vocals, played classical and twelve-string acoustic guitars, grand piano and keyboards. In February, March and April of 2002 Ruth wrote and directed her first film "Talking Again" which won a Digital Gun Award . "Talking Again" is a music video taken from track #3 of The Borderlands. Ruth obtained a Music and Drama Degree from the University of Toronto as well as a Bachelor of Education. She teaches music with the Canadian Bureau for the Advancement of Music where she is a supervisor and examiner. She is Vice-President of the Piano Class Teachers Association and served three years on the Board of Directors of The Davenport Festival of Music, promoting excellence in music performance among the young musicians of Toronto and Southern Ontario, Canada. She plays with her band and performs solo concerts regularly, accompanying herself on piano and guitar and is currently in rehearsal for her new CD, Songdreamer. Ruth's voice is very pure and clean. It's real singing that cuts right through to the melody without being bogged down by superfluous stylings. The songs are very positive and have a gentle spirit to them. . . . . very soft. . . . About the Artist
Ruth Finlay was born and raised in the Birchcliff Village area of Toronto. At the age of six she began her music studies on piano. Coming from a musical family, there was always music in the home. Ruth's father H.C. Hughes was musical and taught Ruth, her sister and her brother to sing in three part harmony at very young ages. Together the children formed "The Hughes Trio", which sang in churches, at conferences and at festivals for many years.

Storey's definitive opus.......2001-12-03
His most atmospheric work yet, Storey has started to use percussive elements more and more in the background. Rhythm is still discernable in pieces like "Talking to a Stick" but becomes less of a standout on "Snake of Earth", where a swirling combination of metallic drones and what sounds like a highly processed steel drum motif take shape. "Omaneska" is both the longest and most breathtaking track, its choral underpinnings refering to the works of Ligeti and seems to reflect an expansive desert landscape, but this is not the desert musings of Steve Roach. Instead, Storey's ruminations seem to reflect more of an Asiatic mystique: case in point, the track "Looking...not finding" reminds me of the early music of Paul Horn (most importantly "Inside the Taj Mahal"), where Horn combined exquisite flute solos with equally exquisite vocals. Here, Storey has done the same, except without the superior acoustics of the Taj Mahal but with an equal sense of sublimity, achieving a sense of grace few others within the electronic music realm have done before. Now, if he would only reunite with *zoviet-france* (even if it's only to record one album), we could expect the impossible to occur...

The Primal Achieved........2001-01-17
The Fires on the Borderlands succeeds here; much more than merely unique, the album is a world in itself...full of a mysterious and ancient sound that draws you in quietly. The sound is huge, surrounding and elegant...performed with a mastery on the level with the best of its kind.
I heard the opening track - "Hollow Flight" - on an internet radio station. Though my attentions were elsewhere, it didn't take long for the piece to hook me. I had no experience with this artist before, but now I'm fascinated to learn more. Give this album a try...and I think you'll feel the same.

Album Description
Import only Three-disc, 74-track collection. The British folk revival that took place at club level during the Sixties introduced a whole new audience to traditional folksong, while also bringing to the fore the concept of the earnest young singer/songwriter. Given the grassroots nature of the movement, it was inevitable that regional scenes would throw up their own local heroes. In Scotland, the grizzled likes of Hamish Imlach, Matt McGinn and Alex Campbell would underpin the scene while providing inspiration for a slightly younger generation of talents (Bert Jansch, Gerry Rafferty, Billy Connolly), whose immersion in contemporary pop culture would enable them to make a greater impact on the mainstream. Featuring typically perceptive liners from noted Celt commentator Hamish MacTavish, Border Lands incorporates all the era's main players - the club raconteurs, the acoustic strummers, the folksong revivalists, the electric folk rockers - for a definitive look at the heyday of the Scottish folk scene. Heroes and Horses: Corridos From the Arizona-Sonora Borderlands

Album Description
The corridos in this collection come from the region comprising southern Arizona and northern Sonora, one that was divided politically by the Gadsden Purchase of 1853, but is unified by a Mexican folk culture. These corridos-- the word translates loosely as "ballads" -- are story songs that tell tales of revolution, crime, heroic showdowns, horse races, and disasters in this overlooked part of the world. Heroes and Horses is a slice of life along the Arizona-Sonora border as it has been lived and memorialized in corridos over the course of the 20th century. Rich with the folk traditions of northern Mexico, rarely are the engaging voices of these balladeers accompanied by more than a guitar and an accordion. Tales of triumph and tragedy fill this collection and bring the Arizona-Sonora borderlands to life. This enhanced CD includes 71 minutes of music, extensive notes, photos, and complete lyrics in Spanish and English on the disc.
