The tracks are good and this set contains a wide variety of songs from a ton of shows BUT without the sheet music for every song, don't expect to be able to learn them. A few are self explanatory (like when to come in etc.) but most would require at least a count of the bars before you sing and musical interludes etc. It's all tracks and nothing else. Not for anyone unfamiliar with the songs.

i think the variety of selections available is really awesome. All the real hits you won't find on most so-called broadway hits karaoke cds. Good quality, a little expensive for karaoke, but hey, it's worth it if you like broadway and you sing karaoke a lot.

    This one has sketches & a few songs; will bring up great memories. There is another CD AT THE BALL which is more tunes & songs with a rare sketch where they toured in Britain which I liked better. It has a jazzed up CALL OF THE CUCKOO which is a treat to hear BUT this one is still great stuff!!!

    One of the greatest jazz singers, Sarah Vaughan, was also a great pop-singer, one of the best produced by the USA. However, although some interpretation's on this album are quite acceptable, and some of the material quite intriguing, the arrangements used by Hal Mooney's orchestra are at times quite IRRITATING (only a handful of songs is recorded with other orchestras).
    Even when the emphasis is not on the strings, the music still sounds corny...
    Just in order to be sure I'm not to strict (being a jazz fan) i gave this album more than one star.

With an amazing 3 octaves and more, Sassy, as she is fondly called, sings the best of Broadway music in her most inimitable style.       Dyed in the wool Boston Red Sox baseball fans don't particularly care what your favorite team is so long as you don't root for the New York Yankees, or something like that. Fan mania reigns in the entertaining CD, "Baseball Songs Sports Heroes: People Who Have Made a Difference", where the core themes are chanted in a collection of creative folk-songs touting America's favorite pastime- especially from Boston Red Sox fans' points of view. This particularly charming CD is a collector's edition with a beautiful copy write graphic on the jacket depicting some of Boston's and New York's legends. The collection is published by Maine's King of the Road Music, with lyrics by Joseph Pickering. It's a must have for fan-mania memorabilia. By the way, "Baseball Songs Sports Heroes" is also registered in the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame. Some of the songs were featured on the HBO special about baseball legend Babe Ruth. Let's face it, 2004 was Boston's dream year, when the elusive World Series trophy finally came home to Fenway Park. As a lifelong Baltimore Oriole's fan myself, I particularly enjoyed the original lyrics and tune, "The Hottest Fan", a time when the game of baseball was taken to the streets of Baltimore and the outcome was not nice- although the song's tune and lyrics by Joe Pickering are historic. "Baseball Songs Sports Heroes" is a terrific gift for anybody with a nostalgic yearning for baseball, with Mother's Day, Father's Day, Christmas and Hanukah (or even St. Patrick's Day) just a few ideas where having several of these CDs on hand could come in handy. "Baseball Songs Sports Heroes" is a timeless series of creative tunes sung and written from the heart.

      Even though I am a die hard Yankees fan, I can appreciate all the creativity that went into this opus. Tuneful, interesting and even a bit sad - you've got to love the lyrics. Perhaps that is why I have included two of the songs in RED SOX VS YANKEES: THE GREAT RIVALRY - my latest book.
      If you care about baseball, care about the Red Sox of Boston, rush out and get yourself a few copies.

      5 out of 5 stars These Songs are Hits!.......2004-03-06

      These songs root for the underdog, there's no doubt about it. They range from a heartfelt tribute to the Golden Greek, Harry Agganis, whose stunning career was cut short at 26, to "Babe Ruth's Curse I and II," directly addressing our most famous player who's (presumably) in heaven.

      Although this CD came out before our exhilarating World Series win this year, the songs are plenty enjoyable and full of Red Sox history.

      "Babe Ruth's Curse I" has been featured on the HBO DVD, "The Curse of the Bambino," narrated by Ben Affleck (without JLo, thank goodness!)

      Two of the songs are also featured in Harvey Frommer's new book, "Red Sox vs.Yankees: The Great Rivalry." This will be great exposure for Joe and Phil's music.

      There's a charming tribute to Fenway Park, and "God's Not a Mets Fan," for those who have also suffered at the hands of the Yankees. "The Mystery of the World" tries (tried) to solve the question of why the Red Sox just can't (couldn't) seem to win the Series for so many years.

      A catchy tune entitled "Who?" urges forgiveness for a certain 1986 player with Hall of Fame stats, who will always be remembered for "one boo-boo!"

      Die-hard Red Sox fans will especially appreciate these funny but painful tales of all that we've been through.

      They're all great songs, but in my opinion, what sets this collection above others are the stories of lesser-known pioneers of baseball who faced discrimination, such as "Louis Sockalexis," about the first American Indian in the majors. And those who think Chief Wahoo is cool might think twice after hearing "I'm Not Your Mascot, I'm a Man."

      Another strong number is "Smokey Joe", about an early black pitcher who was"so good, Ty Cobb (yes, that Ty Cobb!) had to say he'd win 30 games anyday"but was barred from the white leagues his whole career.

      A natural follow-up to that song; is "Let's Not Forget," which recalls the players of the Negro Leagues who endured nasty treatment as well. The best line is, "Robinson slid home to end this national shame, bunted home by blacks who long ago played the game."

      There's even a spirited tribute to a special, very loyal lady named Dorothy in "Who's the Greatest Red Sox Fan?"

      And finally, "The Hottest Game" recalls the day Beantown played Baltimore in 1894 and went up in flames after John McGraw got in a fight (what else is new?) with "Fog Horn" Tucker. Meanwhile a few bone-headed fans clamored for the game to go on. That day had tragic consequences for thousands of Boston's citizens.

      I did notice a sameness in the beat of the lyrics, but Joe Pickering's concepts are fresh. Phil Coley's snappy arrangements and country-style singing make each song heart-felt, and his band spices things up with irresistible licks.

      This is a great collection of songs to get us through the off-season. Even more, it's a lively piece of baseball history that you can sing along to or use in classrooms everywhere! (And you just might even develop a taste for Maine lobster and blueberries.)

      News flash: One of the songs from this CD will be on HBO!
      This is a great collection of baseball songs that every fan should have. I have enjoyed listening to this CD. The humor and wit found in the lyrics of these songs is astounding. You don't have to be a Red Sox fan to appreciate the inspiration of these songs. On September 16th HBO will air the documentary The Curse of the Bambino. One of the songs to be used in the documentary is Babe Ruth's Curse 1. You don't want to miss it. I really, really enjoyed these songs!
