Haunting and Beautiful.......2006-04-15

This is a perfectly beautiful album. This woman is an angel. I hope she will soon give us another CD of her music. Every track here is marvelous, lyrical and skillfully performed. I would not compare her to Enya... because this is clearly no imitation of Enya. Haunting and Beautiful.

The Voice of an Angel.......2002-12-24

Very melodic; very delicate; hauntingly beautiful...Especially the opening song, 'Highlands.' How incredible that anyone can scale the notes to the degree that Darby does. What is even more inspiring is the fact that, excluding 'Valparaiso,' which was written by Sting, these are songs that either were written by the artist herself or to which she assisted. Songs that are meant to depict our journey through life, from beginning to end to beginning once again...This CD is the heart of Celtic music!

Appealing, contemporary songs that beg for a sing-along.......2002-12-05

This collection of pop-flavored compositions was inspired by Celtic legend and idiom, but the style is distinctly modern. While the omnipresent electronic sounds of guitars and keyboards tend to overpower the acoustic instruments, DeVon's clear, honest voice and simple but engaging compositions accomplish exactly what is intended: they transport the listener to her own world of magic and mystery. Her program notes indicate that she views this series of compositions as a journey of dreams, celebration, reflection and imagination, and it is all of those things. This is fun music to drive to, helping to turn mundane trips into sparkling and mysterious adventures. I first came across my two favorite numbers, the sweeping "Highlands" and rhythmic "Quest for Lia Fail", on Etherean's compilation album "Celtic Dawn", which features DeVon and other similar artists. If you like "Highlands", check out "Celtic Dawn" too.

At the risk of sounding like a cliche, my preference in music as in art is "eclectic"-sort of Debussy to Depeche Mode.
Highlands, by Darby Devon, was a suggestion by a friend that turned out to be marvellous. If there were a "Diva" of the Celtic sound, she could be one of them. Her voice is pararlleled only by her muscianship.
Not unlike, the tracery of a celtic pattern the music is woven together, albeit with a modern interpretation at times. The sound can appeal to you on many levels, however, "Highlands" is the thread with which she weaves. Even a borrowed tune from Sting fits into the tapestry.
I played it today at work for the first time and I was delighted, not totally distracted but fully conscious that beautiful music and voice cradled me. I recommended her CD to a HR training expert, who happens to be very interested in celtic sounds, for background to a stress management class here in NYC. But I warned him I expect it back from him tomorrow, and you would too!

Elegance in sound.......2007-05-13

McKellar has one of the finest tenor voices I have heard. There is a range that is broad, while keeping a very masculine sound. I learned that he was trained classically and gave up opera after a season or two to do concert singing. These songs have lush or spare orchestral arrangements as the occasion demands. They are dramatic, even Hollywood-like, arrangements verging on schmalt, but a second hearing convinced me that he was among the finest tenors of the 20th century and the arrangements are "just right."

Scottish Songs for a Lifetime.......2007-05-12

If I was to be only able to carry one CD with me to a desert island, this one might be my choice. The poetry of Robert Burns is entirely inspiring. The vocal performance of McKellar is adequate to Burns' work. The orchestration is rich and appropriately simple. These songs will "stick to your ribs" and leave you longing for a visit to the old sod to personaly perceive the beloved ambiance they evoke.

Who can sing like this today? Vocalion has done it again -- two of Kenneth McKellar's wonderful Decca recordings from 1961 and 1962 brought together for a wonderful vocal treat. There are things the lover of the English art song and ballad cannot be without -- Jennifer Vyvyan's lovely renditions of Michael Head's Foxgloves and Roger Quilter's Love's philosophy; Eileen Farrell's stentorian Sing to me by Sydney Homer; John Mark Ainsley's rhapsodic performance of Quilter's Go, Lovely Rose, and Kenneth McKellar singing Land of Heart's Desire, Sleeps the Noon in the Deep Blue Sky and Robert Burns' My love is like a red, red rose. Happily, these songs are preserved on this terrific release. McKellar had a wonderful, powerful and lyric tenor voice. His operatic and oratorio singing is moving on top of being very musical -- dynamics, portamento, etc., scrupulously observed and artistic; however, his sining of art songs, folk songs and ballads is exemplary and always, underscored ALWAYS moving and right on the mark. McKellar had a real affinity for this music and it simply erupts from the grooves (oops, I'm dating myself)!

The Songs of Robert Burns is lovely -- I defy anyone to listen to McKellar's rendition of My love is like a red, red rose, and come away without a tear in the eye. In my opinion, however, the true gem is the release of McKellar's Songs of the Hebrides. Vocalion includes McKellar's spoken introductions to these songs and it is incredible. One might think that it would sound trite, but McKellar is right on the mark and the introductions make the songs that much more memorable. Marjory Kennedy-Fraser is surely smiling down from heaven as this is the most beautiful and atmospheric recording of her Songs of the Hebrides. McKellar scales down his powerful voice for Land of Heart's Desire and it is ravishing. No one comes away unmoved. Again, who can sing like this today? I tried to think of any tenor or baritone singing today that could come close to this kind of a performance -- I could not think of one. Thank you Vocalion for bringing these performances back to light. Speaking of the recording, it is lush, with that beautiful early stereophonic sound preserved. For the lover's of the art song, ballad or folk song, you MUST have these performances.

Love and frustration.......2007-03-08

This recording has some wonderful Scottish songs by a super Scottish tenor. The difficult part for me is that I need the sheet music to go with one of the songs, but I had no luck locating it anywhere. There are other versions of the song ("My heart's in the highlands") available but none like this one. Is there any chance you could help me find it??

One Of White Heart's Best.......2007-03-14

"Highlands," all dressed up in Celtic garb, looks like one of those albums that has great cover artwork but little to offer in the music department. With this album though, Christian arena rockers White Heart prove that you can have a great album with cool artwork on the cover. The album opens with the wonderful "You Can See The World" and then steps into the solid rocker, "Nothing But The Best." From there we are given a healthy dose of wonderful ballads (especially "Once And For All") and heavy hitters like "Let My People Go." My personal favorites are arena-ready "The Flame Passes On" and the excellent "Highlands Of Love."

If you've been a fan of Christian rock for awhile, you know that White Heart has been on "hiatus" for roughly a decade. Even though they haven't officially broken up, it doesn't seem likely that they'll ever get back together. Although "Highlands" wasn't their last album (I believe that was "Redemption"), it's definitely one of their best ones.

If you enjoy arena rock or Christian rockers like Petra, give White Heart a look. If you can, get a hold of their two "Best Of" releases, aptly titled "Nothing But The Best." One of the discs includes their radio and A/C hits, the other contains their rockers.

I have nearly all of Whiteheart's albums, and this is a favorite, with its beautiful melodies and Celtic influence.

Good but not great.......2005-05-12

The way this album tries to be more than it really is, is admirable. The use of Celtic styles is definitely a step in the direct different direction from the previous albums, but there is not a real "hit" here - it is an album, not a bunch of singles. Also, check out the use of Mark Gershmel's wife's group. Stil a 4-star album!

Simply The Best........2004-11-01

I bought this collection for the Introduction & Allegro cut alone. William Boughton's performance takes what is already a jewel and polishes it to an incredible brilliance and beauty. I own many of the Introduction & Allegro versions done by others, and none of them can hold a candle to this performance. Boughton ruins it for anyone else! This one cut is worth the price for the whole collection, plus you get 4 discs of other Elgar treasures as a bonus! and there isnt a runt in the litter.

Popular Scottish music, with a Ceilidh band featured on some tracks that gives the songs a thoroughly modern sound. Includes "Hector the Hero," a popular anthem featuring traditional fiddle. The Scots Guards are stationed in the vicinity of Buckingham Palace, where they perform guard duties for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. In addition to ceremonial duties such as investitures, they also perform at the annual Trooping of the Colour (the queen's birthday parade) in London.

A Celebration of the American Art Song.......2000-12-30

What a line up of great American Composers. John Musto is personally my favorite New American Composer. "Recuerdo" is an excellent example of his amazing music. His music has so many different influences (Blues, Jazz, Ragtime, and Classical) all blended together to make one rich sound, William Sharp sings them with such sensitivity and grace. Paul Bowles' "Blue Mountian Ballads" are a perfect example of his great choice of text (Tennesse Williams)and his perfect setting of deep southern Music that the text requires. I just get so excited when I hear an album like this, celebrating the American Art Song and it's great and promising future with Young Composers like John Musto and Eric Klein. William Sharp and Stephen Blier are a dynamic duo and pick great repertoire that shows this off exsquisitely.

American classical that blooms from the soul of the earth........2000-09-10

Virgil Thompson's compositions are a refreshing slice of pure amaricana. His works are uplifting, captureing the american soul in much the same way Aron Copland did. Paul Bowles (author of ' The Sheltering Sky')is also featured. He actually studied under Virgil Thompson and their light, airy music compliments each other well, each painting a familiar pastoral lanscape. One can almost feel a cool breeze on a vibrant spring day. The melodies glide like butterflys, conjuring up the smells of flowers or the light-blue of a summer sky. Though not a work of genious, Thompson and Bowles nevertheless manage to create some magical, unforgettable sounds.
