This 1960 session broke the usual Blue Note quintet mold, with Mobley's tenor saxophone featured with just a rhythm section, one that happened to be the best of the era. Pianist Wynton Kelly and bassist Paul Chambers were working regularly with Mobley in Miles Davis's band, while the explosive drummer Art Blakey had worked with him in the original, cooperative form of the Jazz Messengers, and the familiarity shows. Blue Note had a reputation for producing "meat 'n' potatoes" jazz, and no musician would better fit the description than Mobley, who went about the task of making music with a workmanlike focus and a consistency that didn't attract nearly the attention it deserved. Mobley was one of the most talented saxophonists of his generation, a superbly lyrical artist who blended an inventive tunefulness with taut rhythmic attentiveness. The flowing blues of the title track is a particularly fine example of his art. And to say this session is exemplary would be an understatement. --Stuart Broomer
Album Description
Soul Station is Hank Mobley's acknowledged masterpiece. Mobley's hot, brilliantly constructed solos have a smooth sound and an easy feel. With Miles Davis at the time, Mobley is joined by bandmates Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers along with a magnificent Art Blakey. A true classic.
Customer Reviews:
Mono? Why?.......2007-02-07
Yes, one of the definitive Hanks...and Blue Notes. But in PERFECT TAKES, the sampler CD + DVD interview of Rudy Van Gelder, the sample cut from SOUL STATION, an originally stereo recording, is in mono. None of our reviewers state SOUL STATION was mysteriously remastered in mono by Rudy; so perhaps Blue Note screwed up that cut just on PERFECT TAKES somehow, just like they forgot to include the DVD in a whole batch of PERFECT TAKES that they shipped out (buy it used and cheap from Amazon sellers, so you can ask them to check if the DVD's in there too).
I think I'll stick with my previous Blue Note issue of SOUL STATION, thank you. We all revere Rudy. But let us think with our ears, not our hearts. The fact that he remastered the RVG series is no guarantee you'll like them better than the magnificent Japanese issues, or for that matter, previous issues you may have previously purchased. Save your bread. I've been listening to these Blue Notes for over 40 years, LPs through CDs. To my ears, these RVGs sound very good, but they can't touch the Japanese CDs. As with much of the domestic Blue Note CDs since day one, the RVGs still have those here and there harsh highs that interrupt your concentration and enjoyment, and send you to fiddling with the volume and treble controls. Never happens with Japanese--the world's only real Blue Note available "upgrade."
Actually, I have a suspicion that Rudy did not actually remaster all in this series, and that the RVG series is little more than yet another Michael Cuscuna remarketing strategy (let's see, how many times has Cuscuna issued some of these titles?--there's Ultimate, 16-Bit, Gold, Connoisseur, 24-Bit, RVG) and that many of these are repackaged Connoisseur series or hitherto shelved remasters. These really do sound very much like the Connoisseur series. And if you've ever heard the RVG of A NIGHT AT BIRDLAND, Art Blakey's ride cymbal rips our ears and ruins Clifford Brown's solo on the alternate of "Wee-Dot." I have a 1983 Japanese LP reissue that blows this RVG away. It's really hard for me to believe this is remastering by the great Rudy, especially when you consider, in an 1986 interview on NPR, when asked what his regrets are, Rudy immediately answered, "Not having the technology back then to really capture Clifford Brown's trumpet sound" (wow, as great as Clifford sounds on record, we will never really hear his sound). I think Cuscuna just puts Rudy's name on a lot of these.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you buy any from the RVG series, GRAB the two Monk volumes. A digital process was applied by which just about all of the 1951 lacquer disc surface noise was eliminated, and much detail and nuance was brought out, so much so that previous issues are now terribly obsolete. The RVG Monks sound dramatically incredible by comparison.
A prediction: More and more people will get hip to and become sick and tired of Cuscuna's tactics. He will eventually manage Capitol Blue Note out of business, and all that will be available to us will be Japanese Blue Notes. And if you think they're expensive now...
Mobley the GENIUS.......2007-01-01
These Blue Note Rudy van Gelder remasters are well worth the investment, bringing these old tunes to life now more than ever. You also can't go wrong with the lineup assisting Hank on this recording: Art Blakey (drums), Paul Chambers (bass), and Wynton Kelly (piano).
Hank's albums stand the taste test of time, and Soul Station is no exception to this stringent rule. Part of making an excellent record is selecting solid sidemen and knowing when to take a backseat, something Mobley did without apology. On track one, "Remember" (Irving Berlin), there are incredible solos by Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers complimenting Mobley blowing away on tenor sax. The consistant, laid back recording is a classic and Mobley gives each musician plenty of show-off time on these tracks. Surprisingly, this is music you can really move to. Why can't folks get together and lay down an album in a day like this without even coming close to the quality? It boggles the mind.
This album is a must have for those looking to upgrade to the RVG remaster or who are looking to purchase a copy for their first time. Well worth the investment.
ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!.......2006-11-10
This is simply one of the Greatest Jazz Records of All Time! Nothing more need be said. Get it!!! get 2 copies...3 copies...give it as a Gift at Holiday Time....
doesn't get much better than this.......2006-11-01
i seldom play this cd, yet whenever i do i'm reminded again of how very good this recording is. bluesy, some bop, straight up jazz tenor sax at its best. while i'm listening to hank mobley here i want to keep listening to his playing. a big clear tenor sound in no hurry, free of theory, or testing the limits of the sax, or breaking new ground, or looking for a new sound. jazz at its finest.
A jazz masterpiece.......2006-09-18
This is Mobley's finest moment, in a career of mixed success. Always overshadowed by his more assertive contemporaries, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane, Mobley had subtle skills not always appreciated by the casual listener. But, as other reviewer have noted, this album benefits from Art Blakey's driving and insistent drumming, and with no other horn to rely on, Mobley is forced to rise to Blakey's challenge, and he does so with great aplomb and inventiveness. Four originals and two "standards" executed beautifully to supply thirty-seven minutes of sublime jazz that stands among the fifty best albums in jazz history.

If any album set Cinderella apart from the legions of good-time pop metal bands that cluttered the rock landscape in the late '80s, this one was it. Giving full weight to the blues-inflected hard rock of the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith, they turned out what was probably their finest effort, with catchy songs like "The More Things Change" (the video featured appearances by personalities as diverse as Little Richard and Shelley Duvall) and "Shelter Me." While Tom Keifer's screeching, nails-on-blackboard voice doesn't appeal to all tastes, it doesn't overshadow the quality of the material or the band's overall performance. --Genevieve Williams

Third Time Certainly Not A Charm........2007-07-16
I was sadly dissappointed with this album and only give it 3 stars. Perhaps it was the fact that I've listened to their first 2 albums for so long, but overall this album just doesn't get it done in my opinion. Give me the hard rocking Cinderella of old any day vs. this lightweight version. The title track, Heartbreak Station is indeed a great song but other than that the rest of the album just didn't do much for this hard rock fan. Many of the songs vocals are also very muffled and aren't nearly as clear as Cinderella's previous 2 albums. Here's hoping "Still Climbing" is much better. Despite the fact that it was a letdown, it's still much better than anything being released in today's hip-hop, bubble gum pop, whiny world of music.
2.5 stars, didn't get them to the next level, but interesting stuff........2007-03-07
Another solid effort by Cinderella that once again failed to raise them to the level of their buddies Bon Jovi. And that is in some ways unfair as their debut and it's follow up had more honest grit than just about all of Bon Jovis albums combined. Not that they were great by any means but they were from a beer swillin' heavy rocker headspace, even if the image was that of a shameless hair metal band in search of cash and girls.
Heartbreak Station sees a considerable shift for the boys (now looking more like boys with each album) and this is portrayed upfront with The More Things Change. In with the blues, in with a less hysterical image, in with some slide guitar and honky tonk stylings. Each track feels totally as if it came from a different band to that which gave us the first two Cinderalla albums with the possible exception of the aforementioned track. A lot of jangly guitars, a more rustic feel and year another simplistic production job aid the band in this, what amounted to an effort by the band to be taken more seriously. The same trick was tried, with varying degrees of success, by a number of bands in the late 80's/early90's and given their musical track record Cinderella were perhaps more deserving of success. What shouldn't be forgotten is that this shift to more blues/country songs with open structures happened prior to grung. It came out in 1990 so this album deserves credit for NOT being a change in direction due to panic at impending oblivion.
Of course that doesn't make the music great. Whether you but into the new Cinderella will depend on how receptive you are to an ex-glam/hair rawk rock band suddenly "getting" a more laid back style of the blues and going into a studio where the radio was glued onto an alt-country station. And then a few months later coming out with this album.
This album scored OK with a bunch of critics at the time (Kerrang magazine etc) but the bands fan base either weren't up to the change in direction or had grown up and gotten jobs by 1990. Which is a pity as the band pulled off the change fairly well, even if by halfway through the album your hankering after a numbskull rocker like Hell on Wheels or Somebody Save Me. Which is probably why the album stiffed so badly - fans of their previous genre are more likely to slit their wrists listening to this maudlin stuff than tell their friends to go out and buy it.
One of the best rock albums ever!.......2007-03-05
Cinderella, is in my own opinion top 1 or 2 of the very best 80's hard rock bands ever, they rank right behind Poison and just a tad better than Bon Jovi, Skid Row and Ratt. These guys came out of Philadelphia in 1986, with their first effort, Night songs, then 2 years later came, Long Cold Winter. Then in early 1990 Cinderella decided to change their sound a little bit, adding more blues and a little less pop to the mix, the result is, Heartbreak Station, their best effort to date.
The More Things Change 10-10 This song really gets the album off to a rockin' start one of their very best.
Love's Got Me Doin' Time 10-10 This track has kind of a funky vibe to it, it has to grow on you, but after it does its a one of a kind.
Shelter Me 10-10 This is my very favorite Cinderella song. I really can't say why, it is just an up-tempo rocker with kind of a 70's rock vibe.
Heartbreak Station 10-10 This is a pretty good power ballad, one of the best out of the pop metal scene. It's slow and very catchy, no disappointment here.
Sick For The Cure 8-10 Now I am not really sure why, but this song is not one of my favorites on the album. I gave it an 8 out of 10 because it's a pretty decent rocker. Who knows you might love it.
One For Rock & Roll 10-10 Awesome song all the way around, another one of my favorites off the album.
Dead Man's Road 10-10 This song reminds me alot of Bon Jovi's Blaze of Glory. Sounds like something you would see on a cowboy movie.
Maker Your Own Way 8-10 Another song thats not great, but not bad.
Electric Love 8-10 Good, but not great.
Love Gone Bad 8-10 9-10 Pretty good song, typical 80's rock song.
Winds Of Change 10-10 Last, but not least, very good track.
Overall one of the best cd's of the era, if you like 80's pop metal and don't already have this album, get it you will not be disappointed.
Tom Keifer, very good songwriter and performer.......2006-12-13
This album has a very good songwriting like Long Cold Winter, maybe a little step behind at some points but even higher in some others. Personally I find that "Heartbreak Station" is a very touching ballad, a simple song that is just that perfect song everyone dream to write once in his life. I'm happy for this album even only for this song, but it is not the only good one for sure here! Cinderella has been a very talented but unlucky band just like all the one from that era .. you know how the story went. Grunge killed a lot of them. Hair years saw a lot of wonderful bands and musicians instead and Cinderella made no exception, they had their own personality cut out from their influences (Aereosmith, Bon Jovi and Stones), very good songwriting skills and musicianships that found their full expression in Long Cold Winter and in this album. I loved Cinderella for Long Cold Winter mainly because I had those first two albums when I was a kid in the eighties, then I discovered this album in a used cds shop the other day and I did buy it. I can say it is the perfect follow to LCW and a very good rock album. There are the trademark Keifer's power ballads and very memorable rock blues anthems. Labels are really something stupid. Today hair metal bands are considered untrendy and dated.. bah. I still love them and consider them (some of them like Winger, White Lion, Ratt, Rough Cutt, Bon Jovi, Dokken, Harem Scarem, Guns & Roses, Def Leppard, Danger Danger, Tesla, Firehouse, Stryper, David Lee Roth band and many more) some of the best bands USA produced in rock territories (they were "Van Halen sons" in the end). Think about the music not about how long were the hair of the guys in those days ... Tom is a very good songwriter at heart. I know and I knew it in the eighties. Thanks for the music Tom I really appreciate it! Sorry for what you went through in the past with your voice! Rock on!
Musically, Their Best Album.......2006-01-03
Cinderella started as a hair band, then became more blues/rock oriented, but this album is the final step to blues/rock kings. This album is great. This is definately a step up from Long Cold Winter. If you enjoyed Long Cold Winter, you will love this album.

Great Jon Bon Jovi CD.......2007-06-04
This is a great Jon Bon Jovi cd. It gives you an idea of his sound before Bon Jovi. You can tell where he is coming from with some of Bon Jovi's future songs. This is a great cd to add to your collection of Bon Jovi cds for any Bon Jovi fan.
Power station.......2007-01-31
Jon Bon Jovi before Bon Jovi started. Very good album with great songs. this leads to the begining of Bon Jovi and there 1st album.
Runaway the first Bon Jovi hit was recorded during this time.
There are lots of versions of Power station with different covers, some others don't have all the songs.
coming up next...superman and his crew:).......2007-01-28
the album (of course it is not designed to be a album, more of a compilation) just gives you a glimpse of what may come over the next decade and the next and the next :) it contains a lot of great songs like all talk no action, more than we bargained for, for you, hollywood dreams. what really surprised me was his singing for some songs is a lot better than his some off-key performances in "bon jovi" and "fahrenheit" albums. besides you can see some sort of rock that he never tried after during his career. well i am a big fan of the man and the band so i can say it will be worth your every penny or whatever you're paying.
Interesting Choice.......2007-01-22
Good product, not the sound expected but very interesting early solo work of Jon Bon Jovi.
Great music, but buy used if you can........2006-07-10

This is the complete Brownsville Station collection. It reminds of the songs you forgot they did from the 70's.
Still Waiting.......2005-10-02
I would love to review this CD, but it has been 30 days since I ordered it, and I still have not received the CD.
WHERE THERE'S SMOKE, THERE'S BROWNSVILLE STATION!.......2005-07-15
Motley WHO??? The title trash track of this boot-stompin' compilation was a number two juvey delinquent call to arms when i was in high school and has been ever since. If that's all ya know about CUB KODA and his grinnin' gang of Detroit Rock City brats, then fer cryin' out loud, whattya waitin' on??? Slap it on, tune in, and shut up!!! Ya got yer rocked up reggae tune (LET YOUR YEAH BE YEAH, as JIMMY CLIFF never envisioned it). Ya got yer killer glam-slam (GARY GLITTER's punk anthem I'M THE LEADER OF THE GANG). Ya even got THE MARTIAN BOOGIE, a spaced out JUNIOR PARKER-meets-THE PURPLE PEOPLE EATER mind-meld that's been a DR. DEMENTO SHOW fave for light years. Plus, you also get THE great lost killer rockin' roll single of the seventies, LADY PUT THE LIGHT ON ME. Acclaimed liner note king/music journalist CUB KODA does the honors here, chronicling the band's slow rise and free fall; if only he'd penned an entire book about them before he went to that "great greasy gig in the sky"! Many, many albums have made the proud claim, "MADE LOUD TO PLAY LOUD!"...only BROWNSVILLE truly meant it.
Only missing a couple of things but still great!!!.......2005-06-07
This CD gets my vote for must-have status alone for its inclusion of the shoulda-been-bigger single "Lady (Put the Light on Me)" from what I consider their absolute best album, 1977's "Brownsville Station" on the Private Stock label (so far unavailable on CD)...if they'd included a couple more titlaes from that album and at least "Never Say Die" from their "Air Special" album, their last one released on Epic in '79 as Brownsville...this would be perfect! Overall, a great introduction to one of Detroit's coolest and most flat-out rock & roll bands in the 70s. And yes, I agree with the concensus...
their version of "Smokin' in the Boys Room" puts Motley Crue's version to shame from the very first note. There was so much more to this band than that tune, and you can bet Cub Koda is rockin' them right down to their shoes up in rock & roll heaven.
Cub Koda Could Really Rock!!!( Rest In Peace Man).......2005-06-06
This album contains the Classic Rock song "Smokin' In The Boy's Room" which a lot of my peers did back in High School.Back then they used to smoke filter cigarettes. Sadly these days the filter cigarettes have now been replaced with a more potent addictive drug. Anyway back to the album. The guitarist and singer of this band Cub Koda was a Wild Man of Rock who was always great to watch in action as he jumped from one place to another on stage. They don't make them like him anymore. This album ROCKS so play it LOUD and forget about the neighbours!!!!

Mobley On Top!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-05-01
This was one of Hank Mobley's finest albums. The others would have to be No Room For Squares, Workout, Roll Coll, and Straight, No Filter. But this one is absolutely tremendous! Mobley was curtainly on top of his game with this one and so were the musicians he chose. Pianist Wynton Kelly, hadn't been too well known at the time of this album, but swang beautifully. Paul Chambers, who played on practically every modern jazz date in the mid and late 1950's, including All four Miles Davis Quintet albums, John Coltrane's Blue Train, Sonny Rollin's Tenor Madness, Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin, Kenny Dorham's Whistle Stop, and many many more, also shines here. Blakey, always fine, delivers fine sharp/tight solos as well as clean/musical swinging. The first song, Remember is outstanding. It definetly sounds more like a Hank Mobley composition than an old 1920's standard. The others are all good. One other thing I admire about Mobley besides his playing is his titles of his compositions, especially, Dig Dis. This is Mobley's tightest session out there. It's also a classic. This album is just another fine album produced by Blue Note.
The way to do it.......2003-03-06
There are many excellent Hank Mobley records, and thankfully Blue Note has been quite good about reissuing them on CD. "Soul Station," along with "Workout," is the most consistently satisfying.
The lineup tells you that you will be hearing a professional presentation of the music: Mobley, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Blakey on drums on a February 1960 recording date. Still, great lineups sometimes fail to deliver the intangibles that make for a great session. Not so here.
For me, the track that sums up the date best is "This I Dig of You," a medium-tempo take that is so relaxed it sounds effortless, but delivers unforced emotion and swing. Mobley delivers a sweetly lyrical line that Kelly comments on fluidly, and then Hank delivers a solo with his signature midregister, buttery tone. I admire him greatly because he was surrounded by other greats: Hawkins and Young before him; Coltrane, Gordon, Coleman as his contemporaries; and he cut his own ground.
There is nothing revolutionary here. It's honest, unadorned swinging using simple, effective melodies as the base. But it's like saying "Over the Rainbow" is a simple tune. The genius of these musicians is to take the middle ground material and turn it into personal, deeply felt statements that you can sing, dance to, and just kick back and enjoy, from the deep groove of "Dig Dis" to the Latin rhythms of "Split Feelin's" to the blues of "Soul Station" to the heartfelt "If I Should Lose You." The nearly perfect fusion of this quartet comes through on each of these tunes.
Mobley may slip past you if you are dipping into the archives of the great Blue Note recordings, but don't let that happen for long.

A Dictionary of Soul.......1999-02-05
The greatest jazz album ever? Such a pronouncement is always an exercise in futility, but a strong argument could certainly be for "Soul Station." I can think of several more celebrated and popular jazz albums, none of which I'll name here, that offer far less in terms of stylistic breadth and sheer thrills. One thing's for sure: you will not find 40 minutes of more entertaining jazz listening than this.
Mobely's writing is a marvel, so much so that I think the oft-used term "blowing session" is misleading in relation to this album, which would be more accurately discribed as a major work of art, unimpeachable in its aesthetic virtues. "This I Dig of You" is a hard bop staple, and for very good reason; the melody is addictive, its swing so convincing as to feel inexorable. And, as if that weren't enough, Art Blakey therein knocks out one of the coolest drum solos you'll ever hear. It's all dazzling, but more importantly, it's a lot of fun. If you've got friends who think jazz is just music that pseudo-intellectual trendoids use as some sort badge of hipness, please steer them straight to this album for evidence to the contrary. It's replete with the power of conversion.
One could extoll this disc's virtues ad infinitum, though superlatives would quickly be exhausted in the act. Suffice it to say that a five star rating barely does it justice. It is one of those truly rare, perfect things. Buy it or suffer the consequences of its absence in your life, which are not inconsequential.
A Classic "Blowing Session"!.......1998-07-02
A marvelous example of a so-called "blowing session": a small group of terrific jazz musicians gather in the studio for what's really a jam session. These guys really know how to swing together. Mobley's tenor sax is incredibly lyrical and
smooth during his solos and while stating the melodies. He was a master of bop, but his tone
was a reflection of the earlier swing era. Pianist Wynton Kelly adds the same feel. Art Blakey on drums and Paul Chambers ("Mr. P.C.") on bass can't be beat for excellence in swinging rhythm. Put this disk on at the end of a long day and instantly feel refreshed. Hank Mobley's "Soul Station" is one great place to spend some time.

One of the best CD's in my collection.......2007-03-24
I bought the album shortly after it came out in '78. It was one of the best albums in my collection back then. I had to buy the CD and it remains one of the best in my collection now. The whole CD is raw rock and roll. Air Special is great all the way through, from "Taste of Your Love" all the way through to "Down the Road Apiece". They do one heck of a rendition of "Who Do You Love". Definitely a "keeper". More than Highly recommended.
It's a must.......2006-11-10
For old fans of 70's rock and roll, this is a masterpiece. Do not lose it.
It's one of the best BS work.

Customer Reviews:
A classic CD by a true original bar band. .......2007-05-12
I had this on album originally (duhh) during my early teens and didn't take care of it. These guys put their own twist on these covers that no other band could have covered as well. It's Raw Rock And Roll's finest moment with punk roots. To hear this again in pristine condition was worth the decades of waiting. And with the Recent passing of Cub Coda (singer/writer/guitarist) this is a certified classic. Buy It Man!
SMOKE 'EM IF YA GOT 'EM, BOYS!.......2005-07-14
I feel sorry for all the deprived youngin's who have been raised on MOTLEY CRUE's ummm..."motley" cover of SMOKIN' IN THE BOY'S ROOM, the uncontested juvey delinquent anthem of the early seventies. YEAH! is a short n' sweet, snarling, sweaty testamant to the charismatic GARY GLITTER-meets-BO DIDDLEY garage rockin' blooze-bustin' punk pioneers christened BROWNSVILLE STATION. In one thirty minute in-yer-ear blast, music historian/record collector CUB KODA's impeccable taste in genre-jumpin' cover tunes spans country's HOYT AXTON (LIGHTNING BAR BLUES), reggae's JIMMY CLIFF (almost hit LET YOUR YEAH BE YEAH), New Orleans soulman ROBERT PARKER (BAREFOOTIN'), punk Godfadda LOU REED (SWEET JANE), and psychedelic one hitters BALLOON FARM (QUESTION OF TEMPERATURE), all rendered in BROWNVILLE's patented slam-bang-thank-you-glam delivery. Smoke 'em if ya got 'em, boys! No one owned rock and roll covers (or created their own covers to be) like these Ann Arbor overgrown high school greasers. More fun than cherry bombs in the boy's room urinal!
A Lost Classic!.......2005-07-08
No, this is not the worst album in history. That award goes to the Shaggs. Of course there is nothing cerebral or particularly original about this 1973 release, but that's not the point. Just like Black Oak, Humble Pie, Foghat and many bands like them, the point here is to crank it up and have fun.
In 1973 I was 12 years old and living on Long Island. My mother picked this album up for me that summer and I thought it was the coolest thing I ever heard. I couldn't wait for her to leave the house so I could turn it up as loud as it could go! Of course that was before I discovered Deep Purple.
Well it's been at least 25 years since I heard this gem, and I couldn't help feeling like a 12 year old when I put it on! Sure, "Smokin' In the Boy's Room" is here, but there's also a few other great tracks worth mentioning. "All Night Long" is the only other original track, and like most of the tracks here, it is fun to listen to and very catchy. There's also Hoyt Axton's "Lightning Bar Blues" which I like even better than Hoyt's. Then there's "Barefootin'"...perhaps the heaviest track on the album.
It's definately a blast from the past and one of those L.P.s that you would never expect to see on CD. The only thing I didn't like was the short playing time and no additional or alternate tracks.
The Jewel Case has more value than the disc.......2005-07-07
This is the worst lp in recording history. The covers are embarassingly bad, and especially their cover of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" which is down right hideous and I'd be suprised if Lou Reed wouldn't beat the living daylights out of all three of these losers if he ever saw them. If you think Grand Funk Railroad covering the Stones' "Gimmie Shelter" was ridiculous, that's nothing; this is far, far worse. As for their big hit single, "Smoking in the Boys' Room" here's a newsflash:IT'S a NOVELTY song, nothing more. The rest of the songs are "me wanna hump you" caveman songs ineptly play that make Bad Company sound sophisticated. I'm sorry Cub Koda died young, but there is a silver lining in that cloud: HE'S NOT RECORDING ANYMORE. Rated 1 Star because ZERO wasn't available. Avoid at all costs. Unless you want a ten dollar mini frisbee that comes with a jewel case.
Powerful Stuff!.......2005-04-19
Give Wounded Bird Records credit for finally putting back in print one of the great party albums of the seventies. This 1973 release featured their biggest hit, the million-selling "Smokin' in the Boy's Room." Co-written by bassist Michael Lutz and guitarist Cub Koda, this song showed the rest of the country what the Midwest already knew-Brownsville Station was one of the rockinest bands on the circuit.
Though the album contains only one other original (another Lutz-Koda song, "All Night Long"), they included well chosen covers, like The Balloon Farm's 1968 hit "A Question of Temperature," Ray Parker's 1966 hit "Barefootin'" and Hoyt Axton's "Lightnin' Bar Blues." They even covered fellow Ann Arbor native Terry Knight's "Love, Love, Love."
Sadly, Koda died of kidney disease in 2000 at the age of 51. As a music journalist (he was a staff writer for "Goldmine" magazine), Koda was a champion of all kinds of music. This album is a testament to his talents. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

A Hidden Gem.......2007-02-07
I was introduced to the words and music of Paul Brady over twenty years ago when this album came out and was completely bowled over by it. I can't believer he never caught on in the US. I was hooked then and remain so. Melodies and lyrics remain poignant and relevent today. Worth a listen. This is my favorite of Paul Brady's albums.
Can't understand those people..........2003-04-08
Can't understand why no-one has written a review on this CD.
Paul Brady is a star in Ireland and completely unknown in Germany, where I live.
But it's true: I ran into it (as a vynil record) by chance, because someone gave me some LPs from her old vinyl collection.
I was amazed from the start: Paul Brady's music is something of a mixture between Christopher Cross, Randy Newman, Chris de Burgh, Irish Folk music and a lot more.
And all this is always his own music, never someone else's.
I had this record ten years ago and I'm still listening to it.
