All the Silva Zimmer tracks under one roof.......2007-06-27
Silva's newest composer compilation is a great addition to it's "Essential" line of CD releases.
There are plenty of new tracks here conducted by producer James Fitzpatrick (Crimson Tide, The Thin Red Line, Thelma & Louise, The Da Vinci Code, Green Card, Driving Miss Daisy, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.)
Recycled tracks from previous Silva Screen CDs are:
Gladiator - Symphonic Suite - 2002's The Fantasy Album and 2005's EPICS
Gladitor - Now We Are Free (Vocal) - 2005's Epics
The Da Vinci Code - Kyrie for the Magdelene - 2006's Greatest Cinema Choral Classics
Rain Man - 1994's Music from the Films of Tom Cruise
Days of Thunder - 1994's Music from the Films of Tom Cruise
Pearl Harbor - 2004's Longest Day: Ultimate World War Themes
The Last Samurai - 2005's EPICS
Batman Begins - 2006's Comic Strip Heroes
Hannibal - 2001's Cinema Choral Classics III
The Rock - 1998's Hollywood Stars: Music from the Films of Sean Connery
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl - 2005's EPICS
Gladitor - Now We Are Free (Instrumental) - 2004's Reel Chill
Highly recommended for fans who are not familiar with Hans Zimmer's music, or those who want to hear a different take on it.
Producer James Fitzpatrick states in the informative liner notes that "the orchestrators, arrangers and myself decided to go for a totally symphonic approach and treatment of the music : as if the music has been arranged for the concert hall....Other tracks are all essentially orchestral but with a few subtle synthetic additives, mostly in the "bottom end" and the percussion department."
Definitely worth a spin, and a welcome release to put all the Silva Zimmer tracks in one fine collection.
Edited to add: Mark Ayres provides (uncredited) additional keyboards and percussion on "The Rock".

Customer Reviews:
They've done it...........2006-01-11
From the modest power pop of their first mainstream release girl, Eskimo Joe are certainly a band that have grown up in a hurry. A Song is a City includes some of the best material released by an Australian band in years, and is a sharp, melodic and cohesive album perfect for a drive along the ocean. Best song would have to be From the Sea - surely one of the best modern Australian releases. Just like the ocean, it draws you in, and then blows you away.
No sophomore slump.......2004-11-02
Eskimo Joe hail from the vibrant music scene in Perth, Western Australia, though they've been around for long enough that they've outgrown their roots. They've also grown up since their first album (Girl) and the music on ASIAC reflects that.
The older, more mature tone of the CD is demonstrated on the title track, which is probably my favourite - it's more experimental and it shows where Eskimo Joe could push themselves if they really tried. Unfortunately, the rest of the CD isn't as adventurous, most of the songs being quite straightfoward pop rock. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - Smoke, Older Than You and Seven Veils are heaps of fun and demonstrate the added focus which EJ bring to their new music. Don't Let It Fly and This Room are more rocky numbers, though they still pack a good punch with fine lyrics and strong hooks.
Eskimo Joe do miss a few boats - Carosel is jangly and discordant, and sounds very out of place, whilst a couple of the other songs don't work perfectly either (Car Crash, I'm So Tired). But when they're at their best, as they are on lead single (and comfortably the best track on the CD), From the Sea, Eskimo Joe demonstrate the ability to combine great pop music with some quite ambitious rock. In the end, that's enough to make what could have been a fairly average album into a very good one.
Beautiful.....yes it certainly is.......2004-10-20
I had never heard of this band apart from a crazy friend who loved their early stuff. The latest offering from Eskimo Joe - "A Song is a City" is a fantastic album. The songs all contain soft melodic tunes, as well the necessary guitar riffs to make it easy on the ears. They sound similar to Matchbox 20, but with a bit of Radiohead attached.
The best songs on the album are: From the City, Older Than You, Car Crash, Smoke and the ultimate awesome song...Wake Up.
Eskimo Joe is an emerging alternative band, and I strongly urge you to jump onboard. Big things are ahead...
Utterly brilliant.......2004-10-18
This is so beautiful it's not funny. Lead singer's vocals are so smoky... mmm. Reminds me of summer... (PS Vast majority of Australians not fans of Pauline Hanson Merlin!)
awesome.......2004-09-19
Never heard of the band before. Heard some interesting snippets in a surf shop. Bought the CD and fell off my chair listening to it. Fresh and Fantastic. Shades of Police. Move over the Strokes - these Aussie boys are going to take over New York! Hope the boys are not Pauline Hanson fans.

This is a great CD for any fan of the Boston Pops - especially those who have seen or been to their annual 4th of July performance - or for those who appreciate patriotic music. Many of the pieces they play at the Pops Goes the 4th concert are on the CD. My personal favorite is the 1812 Overture for its live cannons.

Customer Reviews:
Makes you want to go!.......2006-04-18
Austin City Limits. For over 30 years, ACL has transcended style, age, and anything else that divides musicians (and their fans) to bring some of the best music around. I tend to be a bit musically schizophrenic, so I love the diversity that ACL brings. I looked forward to the CD, figuring I would be able to enjoy some old favorites and find some new 'must haves.' I wasn't disappointed.
The CD opens up with "Debaser" by the Pixies. I've never been much of a Pixies fan for whatever reason, but this was a pretty good selection (though I'm not sure I'd have started the CD off with it). Dashboard Confessional and Franz Ferdinand were both excellent. And the Blind Boys of Alabama doing "Walk In Jerusalem" (one of my alltime favorite spirituals) made the album for me.
A few bands I hadn't heard before were Los Lonely Boys, Calexico, and Drive-by Truckers. These bands reminded me why I love compilation CDs so much - you always find something new to listen to.
Every CD has its weak points, though, and this CD had a few. I wasn't impressed with Broken Social Scene - I found the vocals to be a little weak, but I chalk that up to my own musical taste. I'm also not a big Shelby Lynne fan. But the weak parts of the CD are more than made up for by the new discoveries I made.
They say that diversity is the spice of life. If that's the case, the Austin City Limits festival is a spicy dish indeed. And I like spicy.
Some of the best names in the indie scene are here.......2005-11-15
This compilation live album captures snippets of the performance of some of today's best independent artists around. Opening with a comeback performance by Pixies, the album dashes by great deliveries from the likes of Josh Rouse, Montreal-based Broken Social Scene, My Morning Jacket and Ben Harper to name a few. Granted that the full price is a bit too much, you can always get one of the used copies offered here for less.
Overall, an excellent selection of music. My only issue with it (and most of these live compilations) is that they can only capture a tiny piece of the real thing, which is why I give it four stars.
Too much heat in Austin..........2005-09-16
I'm glad that I can get to hear this music from the comfort of my air-conditioned living room, because I don't think I'd be as pleased as most attendees seem to be here, considering the size of the crowd and the high temperatures. Despite conditions that would send me reeling in search of the nearest air-conditioned tavern, the oversized crowd is apparently enjoying themselves, which makes sense as you listen to (or watch) these excerpts.
Diversity is the key here, with acts from virtually every corner of contemporary music contributing a song. Perhaps the best thing about this release is its diversity, because it allows the viewer to familiarize themselves with acts that otherwise might have been overlooked. Fans of the Pixies get a chance to hear My Morning Jacket (and vice-versa), while fans of Sheryl Crow get a gander at The Soundtrack of Our Lives (both on the DVD only).
The DVD is the better deal here, since it contains two disks, and contains eight performances not included on the CD release. Oddly, some of the best performances are edited from the CD, particularly the stellar performance of Soundtrack of Our Lives (perhaps the best of all included here) and Howie Day's odd `solo' performance with multiple tape-looped versions of himself as accompaniment.
Consistency is in short supply, though, and both the disk and the CD drag at times. Broken Social Scene's "Anthem for a 17 year-old Girl" is about as tedious as the title suggests. Los Lonely Boys make an attempt to channel the spirit of Stevie Ray Vaughan on a track called "Crazy Dream", but they end up falling far short of their mark. Better is the Old 97's, who get by just fine by sounding exactly like their smart-ass selves on "The New Kid", and Roseanne Cash, whose understated presence lends some grace to the disk with "Seven Year Ache." Unfortunately, though, 100-degree temperatures can suck the energy out of a person, and the languid, mid-tempo pace of many performances included here seems to reflect the heat in ways that might not translate, especially in the comfort of my regulated, 68-degree environment. All in all, the Austin City Limits Music Festival is impressive for attracting a wide variety of musicians, but its occasional lack of energy and continuity render it ultimately less than satisfying. This disc's two large-scale choral works--the Magnificat and The Falcon--show Rutter at his most engaging, thoughtful, and adept. His usual canny sense of tunefulness and rhythmic rightness, flavored with splashes of pop harmony, accomplish his purpose in the Magnificat: to depict Mary's prayer as a celebratory occasion rather than a somber one. The Falcon's image-rich subject matter (the mysteries and symbols of Christianity) and texts, drawn from medieval poetry, the Bible, and Roman liturgy, obviously fired the composer's imagination. Although much of the resulting score--Rutter's first major choral work--draws from the composer's now- familiar bag of melodic/harmonic/rhythmic tools, it is effectively colored with the hues and shadings of ancient compositional devices. The performances, by Rutter's own, first-class Cambridge Singers, are exemplary, and the sound lends ideal clarity and naturalness to voices and instruments. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Music.......2006-05-28
The Cambridge Singers are the best when it comes to the music of John Rutter. Their sound is unmistakable and unable to be surpassed by any other group. Their Latin pronunciation is perfect and a lot more elaborate than others. The sound is very modern and captures the delicacy and the grandeur of this magical piece by Rutter.
The Magnificat, is, in my opinion, the greatest work of John Rutter, much better than the Requiem. The Requiem is soft and dull, while the Magnificat is jocund and full of exsquisite and sentimental tones that can only be found in Rutter music.
The Falcon is an interesting piece, one of Rutter's earliest. It features mediaeval texts. It may not have the melodies of the Magnificat, but it is still interesting. The Two Festival Anthems are an excellent addition as well and evoke the power of religious music.
My soul rejoices in this music.......2005-10-04
This recording of the Cambridge Singers has them recording pieces composed by their own director, John Rutter. The Magnificat is Rutter's version of a standard piece of liturgical music, an intersection of old and new. This was recorded at one of the Cambridge Singers' favourite venues, the Great Hall of University College School, London, in 1991.
--Music--
'The Magnificat' is one of my favourite pieces of the liturgy, and one I enjoy hearing set to different kinds of music. This is a very lively and spirit-filled rendering, with magnificent vocals expressing the joy that is found in the prayer of Mary - 'My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my saviour'. The repetition of the word 'magnificat' over and over in the early part of the music reinforces this idea of joy and praise. Rutter writes, 'I was conscious of following Bach's example in adding to the liturgical text - with the lovely old English poem "Of a Rose" and the prayer "Sancta Maria", both of which strengthen the Marian connection, and with the interpolated "Sanctus" (to the Gregorian chant of the Missa cum jubilo) in the third movement.' This is an extended Magnificat, done in seven movements.
'The Falcon' was Rutter's first large-scale choral piece. This is based on a medieval poem of the same name, and taps into eucharistic imagery and grail legend. This piece included decidedly modern aspects as well as ancient sounds from Gregorian chants. Rutter uses a boys' choir (St. Paul's Cathedral) for this - Rutter remembers his own participation in a boys' choir in chosing this.
The two festival anthems are bright and exuberant, with high sounding brass and energetic paces. These anthems are of praise and passion in the music, and involve full-orchestra accompaniment here (the City of London Sinfonia).
This is remarkable music.
--Liner Notes--
The notes include an introduction to the CD by Rutter describing some of the influences and expressions in his composition. Lyrics are included, and where the original is in Latin, an English translation is provided. There is a listing of the performers of the Cambridge Singers, but no description of the group, nor biographical information about John Rutter.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
This is impressive indeed - were this a vinyl recording, my copy of the 'Magnificat' most likely would be worn away by now.
Better than the Requiem.......2004-05-24
Rutter's Requiem is probably his best-known work, but this CD clearly demonstrates that he's done even better. The Magnificat is the same as is available on a mid-price recording (coupled with the Requiem). The Magnificat is, in some ways, based on Bach's Magnificat, especially in the interpolation of additional texts.
What makes this disc worth the price, though, is "The Falcon," one of Rutter's earliest works, and one that seems to bear little resemblance to the Magnificat, and even less to the Requiem. But it is nevertheless a brilliant piece, well worth hearing.
And if these weren't enough, two relatively early Rutter anthems, "Behold, the Tabernacle of God" and "Praise the Lord of Heaven" are included as well. If you like Rutter's Requiem, you should definitely try this CD.
Inspiring.......2002-07-09
John Rutter turned my opinion of choral music from appreciative to loving it. I first heard Magnificat done by an above average community chorus here and was hooked. Since then I've bought half a dozen of his recordings. Magnificat is truly inspirational music. What makes him a favorite is that he writes challenging pieces for musicians while making them accessible to the listener- harder to do than many think.
By the way- if you don't know- you can't beat Rutter's Christmas music. Some of it is astonishing.
Magnificat a Masterpiece.......2001-05-22
The work was superb Rutter knows how to blend the pop melody and then converted it in a contemporary music forms. The work was so emotional specially the "Et Misericordia & Essurientes", with the grand effects on the first movement towards the last movement. This work is easy to appreciate but deep in its sentiments and its concepts. The work is truly a celebration, not only in music but in faith. Ave Maria!!!

Can I give it more than 5 stars? Sublime........2006-12-01
It's a treat to play year after year December after December. I love the order of the songs, the lavish orchestral acompaniment, and the boy choir supporting Jessye Norman's astonishing voice. A beautifully produced CD, by far my favorite Christmas album.
It will become part of your Xmas.......2005-12-04
It's a reference. Start your Christmas season with this CD.
Jessye is perfect as always.
The harmonization is another pearl in this work. The balance between her voice and the boy's choir completes the ambience.
Pay special attention to "See Amid the Winter's Snow"
Shockingly beautiful..........2005-12-04
This album is shockingly beautiful. Norman's voice is amazing. The first track alone brings tears to my eyes. This is one of my favourite Christmas albums of all time. If you like Jeysse Norman and you like beautiful, sacred Christmas music, then you should also check out Jeysse Norman At Notra Dame.
It doesn't get any better than this........2005-08-22
This is one of the most perfectly beautiful recordings of any kind in existence. The pure glory of Jessye's voice is enhanced by the moving, glowing arrangements and thrilling accompanying performances. You will not find a better Christmas album, this is a true work of love and art in the spiritual realm. While it fills your ears with resplendant sound it fills your heart with love and hope.

brings back sweet memories..........2004-07-29
i was there, so of course i had to buy the cd. the reason i chose four instead of five stars is because i think there were a lot of artists that had breakout performances that didnt necessarily make it onto the cd. there were TONS of bands tho, so its understandable. but the sound quality is great! very cool cd.

Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19
Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.
My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.
The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12
Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.
Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.
And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.
Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.
This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.
Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.
So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Customer Reviews:
Christmas Carols at there best.......2005-10-18
It does not get any better. This 2 cd set is outstanding.
As one reviewer notes the second disk has many carols not heard by most people in the USA. I heard them growing up, but most are hard to find on an album.
Christmas is not Christmas without King's College Choir singing carols.
A great collection... :)
Nice Christmas CD.......2004-01-10
In my haste for looking for some traditional and exuberant Christmas music, and in my blinding affinity for all things "King's", I purchased this cd. It is a nice compelation, although I, and I daresay many Americans, am not very familiar at all with most of the hymns/carols on the 2nd cd. Morever, I found most of the music lacking in pomp and circumstance. Of course, now, I understand that is not what this cd set is for. If you want big sound and more familiar tunes, try something else.
The Best Christmas CD Ever.......1999-12-19
If you are seeking a CD of traditional Christmas music to help you 1) focus on the true meaning of the holiday and 2)draw near to God, this is it. The choral arrangements are alternately beautiful and powerful, delicate and majestic. There is a rich heritage of European carols which 99% of Americans know nothing of. Broaden your horizons with this disc. You won't regret it.
A masterpiece........1999-01-04
David Willcocks has produced, without question, the most elegant and dignified collection of Christmas choral music available. This CD is a masterpiece.
You need one traditional Xmas cd - this is it........1998-11-30
Yes, most of the stuff was originally recorded in the 50's and 60's and it's not going to win prizes for signal to noise ratio. However, if you, like me break out in a sweat hunting for a xmas cd which won't contain some desperate wannabe modernised rehash of carols or a "listen to me aren't I a good tenor/diva and by the way here are some carols?" tracks, then this is your album.
From the moment track one started, with a belting rendition of "Hark the Herald Angels", I had a grin on my face from ear to ear. Warm memories of xmases past flood back, cooking, carols, snow and presents. Yes - dreamily rose-colored, revisionist and traditional it is, but worth every penny in this cynical cyber world.
