Early Masters
Editorial Reviews
From the Label
Woody Guthrie, part balladeer, part sociologist, part political activist, gathered raw material directly from his rich life. He sang his tales to entertain, to enlighten, to change injustices he saw all around. This historical album features Cisco Houston's vocals and Sonny Terry's harmonica (and occasional hollers). The program contains a few original compositions and some of the folk songs Woody found and sang in his early years.

Masters of Memphis Blues.......2007-01-13
If you really love the blues, you'll want this collection. This set is like a history book. These are old recordings and some of them are scratchy, but I suspect this had more to do with the original sources than with the recording effort. This collection is a good illustration of how blues evolved.
Memphis Picking & English Mastering.......2004-10-23
Pros:
* 101 sides for $26
* Excellent remastering, though at times there is too much
* Complete prewar sides of Furry Lewis, the Beale Street Sheiks, Frank Stokes, and Robert Wilkins
* Superlative picking & singing from some amazingly talented country blues artists
* Furry Lewis' rendition of Billy Lyons and Stack O'Lee is astounding
Cons:
* Sides were recorded in the '20s and sound quality is still subpar compared to current releases
* Minimal packing and notes
Bottom line: Impressive value

Customer Reviews:
Another Yazoo masterpiece!.......2006-07-17
This is not your usual blues cd. These aren't the typical blues artists you have heard about in books or television. Some of the guys only did 1 or 2 records, but they are KILLER! If you want a great introduction to the lesser known blues masters this is it!!
Excellent collection of lesser-known Mississippi bluesfolk.......2004-06-11
If you feel like you've exhausted all the Delta and Mississippi blues from Patton to B.B., listen to this. This disc contains many of the only recordings by obscure, but no less talented, artists of early country acoustic blues. You may have heard Geechie Wiley's "Last Kind Word Blues" on the film *Crumb.* If you saw the film, the song has probably haunted you ever since. Worth buying for that track alone.
Indispensable.......2001-09-30
Compared to the giants of delta like Charley Patton and Robert Johnson, the artists on this album are relatively obscure, but it is due more than anything of the random aspect of the destiny. With have Garfield Akers recorded as many sides as Chambre of wire (which did not record many commercial discs of pre-war period, but which appreciated a modicum fame during the rebirth the blue ones of years ' 60), it would have the respect which it deserves (I think it is better a guitarist than the Room). The same ones can be known as of any of the artists on here (not to mention many artists for the past several thousand years, but to think of that inserts too much). The inclusion of 6 ways above here by women cannot seem substantial, but it rather quickly becomes clear that the women were of importance equal for the men in the respect to blue of Mississippi (and, heu, of you know, the life and the basic rights and very which), and they more amply had been recorded, they would be regarded just as powerful of a musical force. Why the hell didn't record the value of hours of the airs of Geechie Wiley when they had the chance? How could they take it for granted? It is tragic, if you find this kind of tragic thing. If Wiley had just recorded a LP' S-value of material, it would be considered more significant than the evil of John, as single as the jump James, perhaps even while significant like Charley Patton. Ouais, I said it. I do not exaggerate. Unfortunately, it left only one handle on sides (the most included here) for the posterity, if the posterity exists in its case. The guitar playing and singing here is brilliant through and through, and the noise of these 78s is excellent (except, unfortunately, blue head of work "without mother of Elvie Thomas of child," which has the heavy external noise). The notes of covering are excellent, certain better notes of covering for an album of Yazoo. If you stumbled in this page for any reason, and clearly you have, you must buy this CD that you will not regret it. But if you regret it, do not carry not felt sorry for to me about it.
A Great Collection of Lesser-Known Bluesmen (and Women).......2001-02-10
I LOVE this CD! After you've been through all the Skip James, Son House, Charley Patton, and Robert Johnson, this is a great place to go. I was pleased to find the haunting Geeshie Wiley song "Last Kind Words" that was used in the documentary "Crumb". Also here is "Outside Woman Blues" covered by Eric Clapton in his Cream days. A great collection with great notes, Yazoo does it again!
Excellent overlooked early blues.......1999-03-31
This wonderful collection contains many relatively obscure but quite good examples of pre-war delta blues. Particularly noteworthy, in my opinion, are both tracks by Blind Joe Reynolds and the uniquely paced "Bullfrog Blues" by William Harris.

Chorégrapie was a book by Raoul-Auger Feuillet published in 1700 that depicted dance movements using symbols rather than mere words, and it changed the way choreographers approached their art. Motions could be recorded for all time showing the movement of feet within bar-lines indicating tempos, and symbols stood for leaping, turning, pointing the toe, arm positions, etc. More than 300 dances were notated, and this allowed courts all over Europe to emulate what was going on in the Royal Court of France, the dance center of the world. This information is fascinating but unnecessary for enjoying the music played here. Mostly by Lully and Campra, the music was chosen by Feuillet to show off the various styles in use at Court, and Andrew Lawrence-King on the Baroque triple harp plays it all with such skill and love that the mind reels. Graceful and dynamic by turns, virtuoso Lawrence-King gets the most astonishing collection of sounds out of one instrument: the CD is never boring or repetitive. There are knock-down percussive moments, graceful arpeggios, and everything in between. The dynamics can sound rich and dark or ethereal. A piece by Marin Marais will be familiar to fans of that composer even in this arrangement, and a Passacaille from Lully's Armide sounds, oddly, like a Boccherini fandango. This is a wonderful surprise. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
tempest on tempo.......2007-05-14
This recording is very valuable to anyone working with the notations in Choregraphie, regardless of opinions on tempi. However, I am surprised with many of the tempi for the dances and I ask myself, " How can such basic questions still be in the air after all the research and all the practice of current scholarship and performance?" Such an important recording as this illuminates the lack of communication among dance practioners in the early dance field.

Kelly Hops Again!.......2001-04-01
Compared to the "original" cast album, which was the two writers and a piano, this album is a dream. Still, it would have been great to hear the original orchestrations instead of a studio band. The performances on this CD give the show some credibility, unlike the first album. One wants to see more of this type of thing done. But put in the original orchestrations. How about Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Yearling, La Strada? If you are a serious collector nab this while you can.
A FITTING TRIBUTE TO MOOSE CHARLAP.......2001-03-22
HAVING BEEN ONE OF THE VERY FEW WHO SAW "KELLY" in 1965,I WAS VERY PLEASED TO FIND THIS STUDIO RECORDING OF THE ORIGINAL MUSIC. I DO MEAN ORIGINAL. SOME OF THE SONGS THAT WERE WRITTEN WERE LATER REMOVED BY A GROUP OF PANIKY PRODUCERS PRIOR TO THE NEW YORK OPENING. THEIR ACTIONS RESULTED IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SHOW THAN HAD BEEN ENVISIONED BY THE COMPOSERS. IT ALSO MADE "KELLY" A MONUMENTAL FLOP SO MUCH SO THAT ITS DEMISE WAS THE SUBJECT OF A COVER STORY IN "SATURDAY EVENING POST". IF YOU READ THE CD NOTES..IT IS ALL EXPLAINED THERE. THE CD IS DEDICATED TO MOOSE CHARLAP. THE PERFORMERS ARE FIRST RATE, INCLUDING BRIAN D'ARCY JAMES (TITANIC) AND RIGHT OUT OF THE 60'S, SANDY STEWART. IT MAY HAVE SOME SHORTCOMINGS, BUT OVERALL..EDDIE LAWRENCE SCORED WITH THIS CD!
WHERE ARE THE ORIGINAL SONGS?.......2000-02-10
TO START OFF WITH. THIS DOES NOT SOUND LIKE A BROADWAY CAST ALBUM. IT SOUNDS LIKE AN OFF BROADWAY ALBUM BY LISTENING TO THE ORCHESTRA. IT SOUNDS MORE LIKE A BAND THAN AN ORCHESTRA. SECOND,I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE SCORE FROM THE ORIGINAL SHOW. WELL, READINNG MY BEST PLAYS OF 1964-1965, THEY LIST THE SONGS ON OPENING NIGHT AND A BUNCH OF SONGS ARE NOT ON THE ALBUM AND SONGS ON THE ALBUM ARE NOT LISTED IN THE BOOK. I AM CONFUSED. ANWAY, WHATEVER IS ON THE CD IS FAIR. ALL THE PERFORMERS ARE FIRST RATE, BUT LISTENING TO THE CD, IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE MUCH. PRETTY AVERAGE MUSIC. TAKE A LESSON FROM THE DRAT!THE CAT! RECORDING ON VARESE SARABANDE. NOW THATS A GREAT STUDIO CAST ALBUM. I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY PICKED KELLY OVER MANY OTHER SHOWS THAT HAVE A MUCH BETTER SCORE THAT WERE NEVER RECORDED LIKE THE BODY BEAUTIFUL OR SHERRY OR LOVELY LADIES, KIND GENTLEMAN TO NAME A FEW. IF YOU ARE A BROADWAY SHOW COLLECTOR THAN THIS SHOULD BE IN YOUR COLLECTION, OTHERWISE, I WOULD PASS.
