Customer Reviews:
Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25
First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.
It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23
Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."
His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.
For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.
Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.
He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.
Nostalgic.......2006-02-20
A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy
Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13
This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite soundtracks of all time.......2006-05-04
My mother bought the album shortly after the movie debuted in winter of 1963 and our entire family fell in love with it immediately. Being only eight when the movie was released, I did not see it until the early 1970's and was not disappointed. Like a prior reviewer, I do agree that "The Drip-Dry Waltz" and its accompanying sequence were a low-point in an otherwise stellar and entertaining movie and soundtrack. I'm not too fond of "Goodbye, Charlie", either.
My favorites are the three versions of the title track, the best being the instrumental played over the opening credits. Also the beautiful "Latin Snowfall", the romantic "Bateau Mouche", the energetic "Orange Tamoure" and the joyful "Bistro". The soundtrack and the movie are a snapshot of more innocent times, which were shattered by the assassination of JFK by the time the film was released. This was Cary Grant's swan song as leading man, this last time to the beautiful Audrey Hepburn, and this film was a true last gasp of the romance and sophistication of old Paris, and the death of a pre-Beatlemania world where cultural standards were still set by adults. The soundtrack is a fitting tribute to this world, soon to vanish, and stands on its own as not only a great soundtrack, but one of the final great mood music albums.
Cocktail party time!.......2006-04-08
This is great cocktail party music. I don't know what it is about it, but it just reminds me of martinis and cosmopolitans. I just love this soundtrack. Every track is unique and zippy with lots of flair with probably the exception being the "Drip Dry Waltz" which wasn't one of my favorite parts of the movie either.
Latin Snowfall is particularly appealing to me and be sure to go back and watch the scene of Audrey Hepburn skiing in France to enjoy the track along with the movie.
Mancini Masterpiece.......2004-08-21
This was always was one of my favorite soundtracks, from when the LP was first issued. This remastered CD is a treasure and represents one of the best from Mr. Mancini.
Charade - Henry Mancini.......2002-10-24
This xrcd2 is one of Mancini's FINEST works.
A true sonic delight !
Don't miss this Super Remastered CD.

Customer Reviews:
Great Music - Great Bargain.......2003-02-26
If you enjoy the music of Henry Mancini and appreciate a good bargain, then this album's for you. I spent several years (when I was in high school - before the practical existence of the Internet as we know it today) searching for the soundtrack to one of my favorite films, CHARADE. When I finally DID discover it, it was available in two formats - alone on its own album or as part of the "Mancini Soundtracks Collection" on an album along with the complete soundtrack to EXPERIMENT IN TERROR, which I've actually never seen. The latter was considerably less expensive, so I naturally purchased that one and was extremely pleased. I feared low quality or missing tracks due to its low price, but my fears were completely unfounded. It sounds wonderful and appears to feature the complete soundtracks to both films.
I've long loved the soundtrack to CHARADE. Like the film, it's funny, romantic, and suspenseful. The title track is beautifully wistful, echoed by its instrumental versions throughout the score as well as other tracks, like "Bateau Mouche." These slightly somber tunes are balanced by livelier numbers like "Bistro," "Mambo Parisienne," and "Orange Tamoure," among others.
Having never seen EXPERIMENT IN TERROR, I didn't know quite what to expect from its soundtrack. I expected it to be pretty dark, but found that it definitely has its fair share of traditionally upbeat Mancini numbers like "Flutter's Ball," "Tooty Twist," and "Golden Gate Twist" and more comical numbers like "The Good Old Days" and "Down By The Wharf."
Overall, this is definitely a great buy for Henry Mancini lovers and likely anyone else who enjoys film music from the 1960s. Add to that it's appealing price sticker and you have an unbeatable combination.
Great 1-2 punch!.......2001-03-01
This CD combines the complete soundtracks of 2 of Mancini's best scores from the early '60's. Both have been available singly on CD, but this is truly a bargain and a treat for the Mancini fan (especially the long-unavailable "Experiment in Terror" tracks, some of which popped up on the collection "Mancini plays Mancini"). Listen to each collection, and hear how marvelous he was at conveying a mood for 2 totally different pictures - "Charade" is romantic, while "Terror" is just what the title implies. Very good, and not dated in the least. Enjoy!

Flower Power and A Symphony.......2001-10-17
If you are a child of the 60s like me, 'Charade' will make you smile. George Lloyd subtitled this suite (he does not call it that) 'Scenes from the Sixties'. The pieces are called Student Power, LSD, March-In, Flying Saucers, Pop Song and Party Politics. The music, for me, does not evoke the images suggested by the titles. LSD does not portray any sort of 'trip', good or bad, and there is nothing extra-terrestrial about Flying Saucers, but does sound like a steam locomotive gathering speed at the end. Pop Song does, as Lloyd points out, have a thumping accompaniment and a lot of repetition but in no way does it suggest pop music. Party Politics, rather obviously, juxtaposes pompous and mock-heroic themes interspersed with chattering episodes. The sad thing is the music is rather good but attaching it to the 60s 'programme' makes it sound woefully inappropriate and very old fashioned. One wonders if some familiarity with atonal or serial music might have helped - in the LSD section, for example. Lloyd is not very good at 'nasty' music.
The 3rd symphony was written when Lloyd was 19 and is an astonishing work for someone that age - Shostakovich had only managed his 1st by that time. Compared with Lloyd's own 1st, there is a much greater mastery of form and orchestration, while his melodic gift is beginning to flower. It is in one movement, like the 1st and 12th. The Allegro Con Fuoco begins menacingly with staccato outbursts followed by a tense and memorable theme on the strings. Muted brass over Sibelian strings recall the menacing atmosphere. This turbulence continues until the return of the tense theme then some fine atmospheric writing which merges with the Lento. Based on a simple but beautiful melody, this is surely the prototype for the great slow movements Lloyd was to create. Building to a noble climax, it then subsides into the Finale - Energico which begins with brass fanfares. Tunes begin only to stop and be replaced by another, giving the music a disjointed feel. The flow becomes more even as the end approaches and the symphony finishes with a fanfare. This is a fine work but the following 4th symphony would be the first of the greats.
The recording is excellent. The BBC Philharmonic, under the composer, gives a fine performance. The musical notes are by George Lloyd. It may be of interest that Lloyd's revival dates from 1977 when his 8th symphony was premiered in a radio broadcast by the BBC Northern Orchestra.
