About the Artist
Lucy Allen is a life-long singer. As a child, her family encouraged music, and she remembers singing in the car on family trips, performing in school musicals and singing in church choirs. Performing material by other singer-songwriters, Lucy also includes original songs. She has sung at coffeehouses, small clubs, radio stations, and festivals across North Carolina, the eastern US, Canada and England. She usually plays a Wayne C. Henderson 000-28 guitar, but will occasionally pull out... read more

Album Description
After years of requests for a recording, Lucy Allen's CD is out. The CD is a compilation of both original and cover songs by artists such as Guy Clark, Cheryl Wheeler, Wanda Lu Greene, and Carol Elizabeth Jones. The title track, When to Let Go, is based on an old folktale, with a happy ending. Explaining the cover art showing a girl with a snake, Allen says, "we’ve all been snakebit at sometime in our lives," and the song was her way of working through that experience.

Another song, Etta’s Gift, was written in honor of Etta Baker, the 89 year old blues guitarist and National Folk Heritage Award winner from Morganton, NC. Allen’s story on this song is "The song came from a songwriting workshop at the Swannanoa Gathering taught by Bob Franke. The apple part came because Etta loves apples, and on my way to the gathering I left some at her house. She wasn’t home, but her daughter was next door, and gave them to her later. It isn’t a blues; I just don’t have that in me. But it has a little bit of blues structure to it. Etta loves it, too. So the gift is the apples to her, and her gift of music to all of us."

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Also on this CD is a great tribute to Berlin's counterpoint tunes. It's a mix of all three of the greats: Simple Melody, Old Fashioned Wedding, and Just in Love. Sung individually and then all three together! You won't get that anywhere else.
