Contemporary folk/pop singer-songwriters and CLAWD Records recording artists THE WINSTONS follow up their first release (1995's Second Chance) with VIGNETTES, released July 10, 1998.

Originally from Buffalo, New York, ANDY and CHERYL WINSTON met and began playing music together in the 1980's while attending college in nearby Fredonia, New York. They later married and relocated to Boulder, Colorado. After languishing in unsatisfying careers, THE WINSTONS recommited themselves to music, leading to the release in 1995 of their first CD, Second Chance, produced by Lance Bendiksen, which received warm reviews.

Wanting to challenge themselves both as musicians and as interpreters of their own work, THE WINSTONS decided to try their hands at producing their next project.

Lyrically, the ten self-produced cuts on VIGNETTES offer glimpses of life's grist: release ("Anything At All"), following one's bliss ("Finding My Way"), fearing love ("Heart of Stone"), wanderlust ("Caroline & Ray"), renewal ("Iris Alley") and resignation ("Vignettes").

Musically, VIGNETTES covers a range of styles, which ANDY and CHERYL attribute to their families' varied record collections and a healthy dose of attention deficit disorder. Americana, pop, country and bluegrass coexist peacefully on VIGNETTES.

Returning to back THE WINSTONS on VIGNETTES are veterans of the Second Chance sessions: drummer/percussionist Christian Teele and bassists Eric Thorin and Ron Bland.

Special musical guests appearing on VIGNETTES include Grammy-winning slide guitarist and Sugar Hill recording artist Sally Van Meter of the bluegrass group The Good Ol' Persons, keyboardist Tom Capek from the jazz combo Dotsero, and electric guitarist Mark Kranjcec, formerly of the alternative band Old Soul.

Brendel, Beethoven, and Vox can't be beat.......2004-11-06

These VoxBox series of Brendel playing Beethoven are wonderful: beautiful playing and a great price! This set is very impressive, particularly the 32 Variations On An Original Theme In C Minor. Brendel's playing is very expressive, and the sound quality is excellent.

Fine job, Mr. Brendel!.......2003-04-12

This collection of piano variations and smaller pieces by Beethoven shows Alfred Brendel in excellent form as an interpreter of that composer's work. However, four sets of variations are missing! The Variations on a March by Dressler (Beethoven's first extant composition published in 1783) is only mentioned in the liner notes. The Twelve Variations on Haibl's "Minuet a la Vigano" SHOULD have been given the characteristic Brendel stamp. They deserve to be heard more often. Also absent are the now considered spurious set on "Ich Hab Ein Kleines Huttchen Nur" (published 1832). The "Diabelli" Variations have been recorded by Mr. Brendel in a separate recording on the Philips label. Also, some of the piano sonatas and little pieces (excepting the C Minor Allegro and the Op. 89 Polonaise) were better left off.

A treasure! Buy it!.......2001-05-24

I can't believe no one has reviewed this album. These discs are a complete and continual joy! The sound is brilliant beyond compare, and what Brendel gets out of the piano is amazing--an incredible range of moods and dynamics. I also own the variations in a (much more expensive) set by Buchbinder, and they seem cold and stiff compared to these. The longer I live the more I admire Beethoven, and these discs add immensely to my awe at his genius.

Great Composer, Great Pianist.......2005-03-31

This album contains a masterful interpretation by the spectacular pianist Denver Oldham of the beautiful, important, and often forgotten piano works of R. Nathaniel Dett. Perfection of expression is the most accurate way I can think to describe Oldham's performances both recorded and live.

For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.

DANCE LIKE THE WIND presents works by eight African American composers from various generations, though they all emerged after the neo-classical period of non-discrimination. You'll hear loyalty to classic idioms like the spirituals and blues, but also elements of more recent genres like R&B, gospel and rap. Enclosed are excellent liner notes and biographical information.

Album Description

Lynn Harting-Ware's most exciting performances are captured here. The programme is an extraordinary blend of traditional large-scale works, such as Sor's Grand Solo with the sophisticated virtuosity of Dowland's most celebratory Fantasia. She plays a group of folksongs, set in a jazz style, with a vocal quality of great beauty. Her own composition, Variations on O Canada! sparkles with an effervescence of true virtuoso writing for the guitar. New musical fare is also to be had in Prelude and Fugue in A minor by J.S.Bach, arranged for guitar by Harting-Ware. Also featured is violinist, James Wallenberg, whose meditative performance in Chama 'the eagle and the plumed serpent'by composer Peter Ware, is awesomely otherworldly. This piece alone is a rarity, with such precise ensemble playing being just the foundation for an extremely expressive duet. The American Variations, a 5-movement duet, pays tribute to Blues, Rock, Bebop and Zuni Indian music. Robert Rollin captures these American styles with a quirky contemporary style. Canadian composers Aris Carastathis (from Greece)and Clifford Crawley (from England) make their first contribution to the guitar repertory with Four Vignettes and Phantasia.

Incredible songwriting, remarkable musicianship.......2007-01-31

This is an amazing listen. (A night out at one of their shows will similarly put you in an aquatic, wayfaring trance for weeks afterwards.) The selection, "Deliver Me" gets me a' bouncin' in my seat even as it gets me riled: "I'm not convinced there's still time/to believe in current events...'cause history recycles every bone/that heroes collect at the side of the road/homesick pirates weep and moan/deliver me." The song "Electricity" has a beautiful waltz tempo and is terribly sweet. And I adore "Uncurl" because Margrit brilliantly includes the phrase "the early bird/distributes all the sperm" and the word "fetus" in one song. Piano pride alert! Piano pride alert! "Members Only," with its deliciously sneaky lyrics, reminds me that some of us NEED our black and white keys- not a guitar string in sight.

Powerful, Playful, Introspective Piano-Driven Jazz-Pop.......2006-07-22

Does True Margrit ever get tired of Ben Folds/Five comparisons? Think "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner" with fewer references to the South and more lyrics exploring the existential status of the human soul. Susan Werner's voice, lyrics, and piano playing also come to mind, though in different proportions.

Like onions, ogres, and parfaits, this CD has layers. If you have some obsessive tendencies, it holds up quite well through a week at work listening on the laptop nonstop. I was hooked through Pandora by the piano bombast and clever theology of "If Heaven Knows" -- and there's a enough bombast and clever throughout the disc to satisfy anyone's Meat Loaf/They Might Be Giants sweet tooth.

On repeat play, what stood out for me was the thoughtful, unpretentious take on where we come from, where we are, and where we're going. It's tricky to make a record about that sort of thing without getting Heavy (And Using A Lot Of Capital Letters), but Margrit Eichler manages it beautifully.

Invigorating!.......2006-06-07

Sometimes you can listen to the radio for hours and have the music float right over you. But then a new song starts and it immediately gets your attention and reminds you that music is supposed to be enjoyable. Such was the case with "True" by True Margrit off their album Seaworthy. Perhaps it was the strident piano that is soon accompanied by staccato cello that leads to an ominous verse that often takes a relaxed, hopeful breath in the simple chorus. More orchestration occurs as the song develops, at times refreshing and then suddenly threatening, taking the listener through many moods in just three and a half minutes without ever leaving it's melodic roots. Invigorating!

Tori and Fiona ain't got nuthin' on True Margrit.......2006-05-08

Tori and Fiona ain't got nuthin' on True Margit...and what I mean by that is...in the past, when I wanted to put on music that "moved" me...I would usually choose either Tori Amos or Fiona Apple, cuz piano music moves me, and I love their poetry and use of the piano to express themselves. (I have been listening to both of them since the beginning of their careers) NOW...when I want to put on music that moves me...True Margrit is my first choice. Both of their CD's are so amazing that I can just play them over and over again and not only keep hearing different things with each song musically, but lyrically, I also hear different lines that I missed, or didn't register other times. I am looking forward to another new release, and in the mean time, I'll keep on rockin' to Seaworthy and Deceptively True...it's TRUE!!!!

A Rock Musical that Actually Rocks!.......2006-04-14

Seaworthy wasn't written as a rock musical, but it certainly could have been one. It's a coherent collection of complex, piano driven songs. Too many rock musicals (and rock musicians versed in music theory) tend to forget that rocking out is as important as the technical nature of the craft. As a song-writer and performer, Margrit never makes this mistake. Her songs are both complex and cool. If you like Ben Folds or Rufus Wainwright, you'll want to check out Seaworthy.
