About the Artist
"As a songwriter I feel the need to surrender to the song," says singer/ songwriter Yasmine White. "For me, the hardest part of creating is giving up the fear and being honest to the song and myself. But that's also the best part." She believes that the beauty in a song lies in its honesty and that our closest connections come from vulnerability.

Yasmine recently moved to Chapel Hill, NC from Los Angeles, has begun to play at area clubs, and she was a finalist in the 2001 North Carolina Songwriter's Contest. She has recently completed her new CD, Simple Truths. Simple Truths features eleven of her original songs, sung in her unique, emotionally charged voice.

For Yasmine, songwriting is a journey and an exploration into the soul, a way to try to figure out the world around her. "When I'm in the middle of a song I've written and the moment is all that exists and I'm riding it without any controls and all of a sudden it's just the soul of the song that exists...there is no fear at that moment only ecstasy...that's where I love to live." When she was a kid growing up in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., she would walk home from school picking up leaves or kicking stones and singing. Sometimes she would just go over songs she'd learned and sometimes she would make up her own. That childhood fascination stayed with her as she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of Maryland. At Maryland, she was exposed to an eclectic mix of musical styles, studying counterpoint, gospel choir, African drumming and beginning saxophone.

Yasmine played in bands and did a lot of solo work in New York in clubs such as the Speakeasy and 8BC as well as more recently in Los Angeles playing at the Roxy and Coconut Teaszer

"Family history is intense. So many of my songs touch on my past, growing up... my family. We all seem to walk around like a map ...we take our histories with us and it becomes part of the material we use to relate to the world -- what we give to the world and take from it. Each song that I write has elements of my history and I think I'm the better for it. But, it's also painful. Everyone brings things from their past that they need to work through and understand and forgive. I think that's where compassion is born. I feel very lucky that I have music to give me a way to work through these things and I get a gift at the end... I get a song."

Album Description
"As a songwriter, Yasmine White wears her heart on her sleeve ... and her quickly mind and her ever-lovin' soul, as well. Right out there. She makes no secret of it: Life, hers and ours, is a ride that bumps along and bruises us, a thing that bears down on us like the boogie man and, often enough, leaves us shaken and just wondering. Hearing her songs, we know she knows, herself and ourselves.

But there's more: the quiet comfort of fingertips, the eventual recognitions of love, the laughable ironies ... that, too, is the life we carry about. There's no easy sentiment here, though. The wisdom, the lyric-words are hard-won. And sometimes there's no winning to make a song of, only a loss, or a consternation. But, whether she's taking us up or down, Yasmine's care for truthful language is evident in every one of her songs. As a musician, Yas gives her voice the smoothest of pipes to run in, out to the wide edge of her range without a hint of strain. Whether in company with her spare, precise and always appropriate guitar work (and, on several numbers, with skillful violin and bass accompaniment, as well) or a cappella, she is at ease in her voice, and a sweet clarity is the result. As well, the tunes she's written are fresh and memorable. I'd bet that every song she sings would get votes as someone's favorite."

Simple Truths, Music, Yasmine White, 2nd place winner in the Folk category of the 2002 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Simple Truths features eleven of Yasmine White's original songs, sung in her unique, emotionally charged voice.

What's still surprising about this trio is their unquenchable thirst for fresh inspiration, which they find here in songs by Bob Marley, Hank Williams, and Townes Van Zandt among others. And, after 25 years together, guitarist Wendell Holmes, his bassist brother Sherman, and drummer Popsy Dixon still have the unique ability to transform their sources, which explains why Williams's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" crunches with garage-band raunchiness and Marley's "Concrete Jungle" unfolds as a folk-blues spiritual. But original tunes like the Chuck Berry-style stomper "Run Myself Out of Town" and the gentle ballad "We Meet, We Part, We Remember" prove they needn't look further than their own songwriting for great numbers that play to their long-developed strengths: gentle and soaring three-part harmonies, respect for economical grooves, and virtuosic guitar melodies. It all serves to further their distinctive blend of the roadhouse and God's house. --Ted Drozdowski

Album Description

The Holmes Brothers return with SIMPLE TRUTHS, helmed by the same Grammy-winning pair—producer Craig Street (Cassandra Wilson, Chris Whitley) and engineer S. Husky Höskulds (Tom Waits, Joe Henry, Wallflowers)—who were part of the creative team for the 2003 Norah Jones smash Come Away With Me. SIMPLE TRUTHS features 13 striking songs reflecting The Holmes Brothers' wide-ranging musical palette. The CD brings the group back into the secular world while still holding tight to their rich gospel harmonies and rough-edged vocals. The album features an amazing collection of songs written by some of the greatest songwriters of the last 60 years, including Townes Van Zandt (If I Needed You), Bob Marley (Concrete Jungle), Gillian Welch (Everything Is Free), Willie Nelson (Opportunity To Cry) and Hank Williams (I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry) as well as choice covers of Collective Soul's Shine and Bruce Channel's Hey Baby. The Holmes Brothers' spirited original material (Run ! Myself Out Of Town; We Meet, We Part, We Remember; You Won't Be Livin' Here Anymore; and I'm So Lonely) fits perfectly alongside the rest of the songs on this transcendent, boundary-defying release.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic album!.......2006-01-31

We first heard of the Holmes Brothers by watching one of Willie's shows, Angels and Outlaws. What wonderful music the Holmes Brothers produce. We have sent this album to many of our friends and they have all enjoyed it as much as we have. We wish them continued success!

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly Singin.......2004-09-16

Simple Truths is a stripped down record rooted in Harlem blues with touches of gospel, country and folk music scattered throughout. Great harmonies punctuate these songs especially on the touching We Meet, We Part, We Remember. They turn If i Needed You into a spiritual experience, the kind where you kick back, close your eyes, and drink a budweiser to. Bob Marley's surely nodding his head in approval in heaven when he listens to their soulful version of Concrete Jungle. Popsy Dixon's singin on Gillian Welch's Everything is Free is sublime. Good stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Simply boring!.......2004-07-14

I read the reviews on this CD and based on them, purchased it. It's one of, if not the most, diappointing purchases I've made on Amazon. The production and performance quality are both marginal. I've tried to listen to the CD multiple times and can't get through it. I enjoy all types of music, but primarily listen to Blues, this CD made me blue.

5 out of 5 stars 'nuff sed.......2004-06-02

Saw them at the Strawberry Music Festival and...WOW! Their live performance was excellent, the next morning's gospel "workshop" sublime! The album, while testimony in itself to the quality of this band, only begins to showcase the harmonies, the musicianship, the soul of this trio. Not a skippable song among them.

5 out of 5 stars Next best thing to live..........2004-04-08

You can get this cd if the HBs aren't coming to your town, or to remember how great there were when they DID come, but don't miss them live if you can make it: More great sound comes out of this trio than you could ever believe,(if your eyes were closed).

5 out of 5 stars Yasmine Touches You in Places You Didn't Know You Had.......2003-07-01

I first heard Yasmine White at a house concert. I sat so close that when she dropped her guitar pick I had to move my foot so she could pick it up. (By that point I was so in awe that I didn't even realize she'd dropped it.) When she first began to sing that day, proximity became irrelevant. Her voice is so mature, her songs so suited to her voice, her styling so suited to her lyrics and to her melody, that the whole concept of seamlessness is redefined in listening to her.

I was worried that Yasmine on CD would be only the faintest approximation of Yasmine four feet away. I need not have worried. It is astonishingly well-produced.

For years I have wanted there to be a genre called Adult Music, not in the euphemistic and oxymoronic sense of "adult" but capturing what it means to be grown up. What love feels like (and yes, that includes making love,) and loss, and hope, and the emotions and the blessings that will probably never again be unmixed, and about being a poet/singer who writes and sings about these things -- who indeed has almost no choice but to do so.

Yasmine's work is the very archetype of music for grownups. You will hear her CD and before the third track is over you'll be thinking of the people you want to give one to.
