From Amazon.co.uk

Flagbearers for the "nu rave" movement they helped found, London's Klaxons make their full-length debut with Myths of the Near Future. Fans of the old rave, initially, will be forgiven for not knowing what all the fuss is about--beyond a dramatically punked-up cover of "Not Over Yet" by '90s chart star Grace, the Klaxons owe precious little to the synthetic rush of UK clubland past or present. Persist, though, because once beyond this realisation, it's possible to appreciate this band on their own merits. "Isle of Her" and "From Atlantis to Interzone" come on like brooding US punks Liars, all thrumming, distorted bassline and a vocal delivery that veers between desolate and manic (although the latter's whirling air-raid siren is very much the Klaxons' own addition), while on the other side of the coin, "Golden Skans" betrays an impressive ability for anthemic, harmony-laden pop. Lyrically, too, it's a confusing and fascinating document, fragments of "peacock's tails" and "madcap Medusa" emerging from the maelstrom. What at first sounds unfocused gradually makes a weird kind of sense; indeed, you suspect the Klaxons planned it that way from the beginning. --Louis Pattison

Amazon.com

Coming to the big city is an oft-yanked rock trope, and it fits with the Klaxons, who met in London and quickly reinvigorated a long-slumbering "rave" scene--even earning the "nu rave" descriptive. Their sonic mix is quickly catholic, grabbing big guitars and sloshing them with keyboards and pianos, high-harmony vocals, sharp drumming, and a bed of rumbling bass. The tunes pulsate, mixing styles and references that show how the metropolis is a giant dazzle where everything from '60s-era psych-rock to Franz Ferdinand--with references to Thomas Pynchon, Aleister Crowley, and William S. Burroughs bounce together for good measure. If sound was light, the Klaxons debut would flash and strobe relentlessly, pivoting on the pin of effervescence and multiplicity. --Andrew Bartlett

from their mythical lyrics to their fantasy-themed videos, anyone can tell the Klaxons have a style all their own. coining the genre "nu rave," has only garnered more attention and support, smart move. and it's the perfect description. i really can't get enough.

order of preference: golden skans, interzone, not over yet, and gravity's rainbow are my top picks from the album.... but others are soon joining the list. honestly, turn on Interzone and crank up the volume. you won't be able to sit still.

lately most of my favorite music has came out of the UK. please, keep it coming!!

5 out of 5 stars Believe the hype.......2007-05-27

It seems that hype within the music industry develops earlier and earlier. Consider the case of UK group Klaxons who were featured on the cover of NME a whole three months before their debut album even hit record store shelves. At the time of attaining the coveted cover spot on the UK music bible the group had existed as a band for less than a year, and had released only one EP to go along with the countless remixes of their songs floating around on the Internet.
It would seem that the case of Klaxons can also be cited for revealing the limited number of responses people use to approach highly touted next big things: 1) Unquestionably buy in (dumb idea) 2) Backlash (dumber idea) 3) Buy in initially only to backlash a few months later all the while claiming `you were there' from the start (dumbest idea) 4) Thank Ms. Hype for the kind tip, then go hide in the corner alone with a set of headphones and decide for yourself (good idea, no?). And indeed the Klaxons seem to be experiencing all the potential responses. But the Klaxons are a band to take note of, and Myths of the Near Future is indeed a worthy and memorable endeavor that is likely to be one of 2007's best releases. Despite the bands short existence the growth between their EP Xan Valleys and Myths is quite remarkable. If you've never heard Klaxons picture a more daring version of Bloc Party with not one but three Justin Timberlake's providing the vocals. Intrigued? Take the risk, because the rewards are indeed great.

4 out of 5 stars familiar, yet alien in the best way possible.......2007-05-23

in each song and idea klaxons bring to the table it just seems like i've heard an echo of it somewhere in the independent music scene before. yet i can't pin it down. i love it for it's energy, and i'll continue loving it for its layer upon layer approach to a scene that needs depth in a major way. i don't regret my purchase in the least.

5 out of 5 stars Koo Koo for Klaxons.......2007-05-02

From start to finish, this album is ace. Just got it yesterday and haven't stopped listening. Will definitely be a fave for all time.

"Golden Skans" is my personal favorite.

Don't let them be pigeonholed by a genre of music. "nu/rave" or whatever. They're innovative and catchy, with a dose of 80's influence, yes. However, I grew up in the 80's, and we didn't have anything close to Klaxons.

Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-05-01

After seeing the music video for "Golden Skans", I just had to investigate this band further, and I am sure glad I did. This is one amazing indie/space rock/psychedelic/pop record. There are some amazing songs on here, with soaring melodies and some awesome instrumental work. I can only hope that Klaxons go up from here. I can't even describe it, you just need to give this record a listen. Even if it doesn't hit you on the first listen, give it a few spins. This is one of the best new bands I have heard in quite a while.

Todd Snider really knows how to work a room. As a storytelling troubadour for the slacker set, he takes inspiration from the likes of Jerry Jeff Walker (as he explains in one of this solo concert album's deadpan introductions) and Robert Earl Keen and applies it to a selection of shaggy-dog stories, talking blues, and slices-of-life gone askew. One of his earliest signature tunes, "Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues," has now outlived grunge by too long, but the more recent "Waco Moon," inspired by the death of guitartist Eddy Shaver, shows that Snider's songwriting is good for a whole lot more than laughs. Some of his most engaging songs such as "Beer Run" seem to have practically written themselves, while others such as "Tension" and "Statistician's Blues" sound like songs that were just waiting to be written. It's an integral part of Snider's engaging appeal that he makes it all seem so effortless. As with Keen, the challenge for Snider is balancing the easy laughs with his more serious progression as a songwriter. --Don McLeese

It wasn't until I decided to download free music by Todd Snider that I realized I needed to buy every album he has ever made. Little by little I discover a near missed opportunity - now found. Near Truths is the place to start a TS collection. When I first heard this I wondered where the heck have I been all these years? How did these few artists get overlooked during that time? I guess the ninties was my version of the sixties. This guy exemplifies what yesterday is today. The real "new breed" of America. Not many ever "get it" but this one does.
A real treat and

Todd Snider is THE BEST singer-songwriter out there. He combination of sad, funny, and introspective songs puts him in a league by himself. Most hard core fans like myself are glad for a live album, but in the end, it makes you a fan of ALL his albums. The is a great overview of Todd, but in the end, all his albums are great.

Album Description

72 minutes on 8 tracks/ very good song diversity.

This CD provides a unique opportunity to hear the authentic sounds of humpback whales. There is no background music, only whales. Includes the special, nearly 25 minutes, "One Humpback Whale", an excellent recording of a close whale, just a few hundred yards away, originally recorded on digital audio tape, giving the whale great presence and clarity.

Recorded near the Virgin Islands from a 13 foot inflatable boat, using a professional hydrophone.

I had been looking for whale songs for a while, and finally this cd filled my expectations. It is only natural whale voices, nothing more. Some of them give me a peculiar funny feeling, like if the whale were singing a joke, or laughing. Not for everyday, but I enjoy it once in a while.

Richard Shindell saw his fervid following expand thanks to Cry Cry Cry, an album of covers he recorded with fellow folk stars Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky. But fans are keen to take him straight up, and folk's Velvet Fog has obliged them with Somewhere Near Paterson. His fourth release is in fact a return to form after the uneven Reunion Hill. Still, longtime fans--and those lucky to come upon this singer-songwriter for the first time--should cherish almost everything here. In the jingle-jangle opener, "Confession," a Wall Street type is desperate for pharmaceutical grace. Some will consider this monologue a chip off the Michael Stipe-ish block, yet its compound of irony, sympathy, and slant observation is Shindell's own. Other great tunes include "You Stay Here," narrated by a war-zone Everyman, "Waiting for the Storm," featuring another of the disc's quiet outlaws, and "Spring." Though this cut's Celtic-style coda has its longueurs, few would be without its paradoxical chorus: "Maybe will be certain / You can take it as a vow / Winter's just the curtain / Spring will take the bow." Shindell insists that his dramatis personae exist only in "songland," but his best work makes one beg to differ. And no one does dynamics and drop-D tunings better. --Kerry Fried

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars one listen and you are hooked... .......2007-06-14

there I was in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the night before my own one-man show was set to take center stage and I was invited to attend a concert being given by the foks of Legion Arts. That was my first introduction to the music of Richard Shindell. I bought this CD that night after the concert. A unique singer-songwriter with lyrics that run deep. Beautiful music, one of the great unknowns of American music with a loyal, dedicated following. Listen and you'll know why. My wife became a fan after I played it for her and it is still one of my most played cd's that I own. Confession, You Stay Here and My Love Will Follow You are my favs.

5 out of 5 stars Songwriter's Dream.......2007-02-26

Richard Shindell explores a variety of personal emotions in his work. Every song is interesting and most will stick with you. I believe "You Stay Here" is one of the best songs ever written. It packs a huge, unspoken story into such simple lyrics.

"Wisteria" ids also a favorite of mine. "The Grocer's Broom" is moving.

Shindell is probably too introspective for some, but if you're in a contemplative mood, you won't go wrong with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Wow...This is Great!!.......2005-11-09

"Confessions" and "My Love Will Follow You" are the strongest tracks. There is also the poignant "You Stay Here," about survival and family, and "Transit." Shindell has a knack for crafting haunting and compelling stories and music. This is a very gifted singer/songwriter. "Lately I've been thinking, something has to give....I left the doors ajar, sitting here in this rocking chair waiting for the storm." Powerful. I cannot believe I'm just discovering his music now. I just received this CD and have been playing it over and over in the car, feeling more enriched after each listening experience. I've ordered his live CD "Courier" which I understand is even better! I look forward to seeing him in concert some day soon too.

The lyrics are very meaningful and not like the tripe we see in commercial music nowadays. The excellent music enhances the lyrics, taking them to another level. There is almost a blunt honesty in his music that shines through very graciously. As one reviewer said, this is "great music to listen to on a summer night in the car with the windows open." Congrats on an excellent recording Mr. Shindell :) Your music is a true treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Go Richard Shindell!.......2005-10-17

I loved this CD! It was almost like sitting at one of his concerts. The songs are poignant, and the music is diversified, some mellow and reflective, some just fun. Richard's music is story-telling at its best!

5 out of 5 stars A Folk Tour De Force: Shindell's Poetic Magnum Opus.......2001-04-12

If anyone questions Richard Shindell's place in folk music, he/she need only listen to this glorious, passionate tour de force and all doubts will vanish. Shindell has created a collection of astounding beauty and heartfelt tenderness. With this cd, he has raised the poetic simplicity of "Blue Divide" to astonishing heights of insightful commentary (Confession, Transit), poetic wistfullness (Wisteria, Thr Grocers Broom), and sumptuous music (Spring, Merritt Parkway). This is some of the fimest folk music ever recorded. His warm vocals and depth of spirit will at once break your heart and make you shout on the rooftops for joy.

5 out of 5 stars Teeming with classics.......2007-03-01

I purchased this for track #10, which I'd happened to hear on the radio...it stayed in my head until I tracked down the CD. I have a relatively basic working knowledge of classical music, so this long playing collection was an excellent and surprising introduction to several of Bach's diverse works...both well known and more obscure. Certainly a worthwhile addition to your classical collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory CD!.......2006-06-29

This CD is an excellent introduction to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. It's certainly not exhaustive, but it's a start. It also includes pieces from Johann Michael Bach, as well as another composer (whose name escapes me at the moment) whose work was once mistakenly attributed to JSB. This entire series of CDs is perfect for those who wish to learn more about the Classical Masters. Start with this series, and then by all means, delve deeper into their respective repetoires. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Bach........2006-02-27

I don't want to repeat what has been said already but this is a great indroduction to Bach. The variety on this release is good, but like has been said numerous times before, the amount of variety fails to set a single mood. But with a low price and a great deal of variety this is a great CD for those who want to start getting into Bach. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Bach For Dummies?.......2002-07-18

A smattering of short excerpts -- many not on their native instruments -- to introduce the great literature left to us by J.S. Bach. Some of the versions are truly inspired, a few are not.

If you like what you hear here, by all means seek out the full-length, original instrument versions!

5 out of 5 stars A super introduction to Bach.......2002-03-04

For someone who knows little about Bach and wants to learn something, you couldn't do better than to give them this CD. Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra give their signature warm, plush sound to the work of the great Johann Sebastian Bach, making him sound very nearly like a Romantic rather than a baroque or classical composer. This is not a bad thing--some complain that Bach, with his mathematical leanings, leaves them cold. That isn't possible with the inviting material on this CD.

With this disc, Chanticleer, the internationally renowned, all-male 12-voice chamber choir, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Presenting songs from earlier albums plus one not previously recorded, the selection displays the group's remarkable stylistic and linguistic versatility, as well as all the qualities that have made it famous: the impeccable precision and intonation; the pristine tonal purity; the deep, inner expressiveness; the infinitely variable range of colors, textures, dynamics and moods; and the incredible vocal control that allows voices to stand out as well as to blend into a seamless, sonorous whole. Not for nothing has the group been called "an orchestra of voices" with its ability to sound like a big band in chordal passages and to imitate bass pizzicati as well as patter-songs and gospel shouts. The sopranos take off into stratospheric heights with florid coloratura; it is hard to believe that these are male voices. The program ranges from Gregorian chant and liturgical music of the 16th and 17th century, through traditional and jazz-influenced folk songs and spirituals (some in deplorably bad arrangements), to works by contemporary composers. Chanticleer's mostly vibrato-less vocal style still reflects its roots in its original Renaissance repertoire, but the way the singers use their voices in the popular, jazzy songs makes one aware of the evolving kinship between the two traditions. Though primarily an a capella ensemble, Chanticleer is occasionally joined by various instrumental groups, from period instrument orchestras to a jazz trio, and Dawn Upshaw adds her radiant, smiling, unmistakably "real" soprano to a delightful, high-spirited performance of a Spanish Carol. This disc is a fine, varied sampling of Chanticleer's discography and should inspire listeners to search out all the complete albums. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars My idea of heaven.......2007-02-17

If you liked Norman Luboff's Song's of the Sea's "Shenandoah", the price of this CD is worth it alone. That's why I ordered the CD. I heard Chanticleer's version and immediately ordered it. The rest is just the icing on the cake.

Then there is the one Kiri Tekanawa (sp?) offering, which is the only female voice on the recording.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not quite the best of I had hoped.......2006-07-18

Some great material truly shines on this album, but I wsih that the group had been a little less populist in their choice of repertoire. There is a little too many arrangements and folk-like material, with the exception of the wonderful "Dulaman", and I would like to have heard some more varied repertoire. That said this is an excellent starting point for this amazing group.

5 out of 5 stars A treasury.......2005-11-06

As you can tell from the samples, the music here is amazing and covers a wide territory. It is less obvious that much of this is available on other CDs. I am confident, for example, that "We Shall Walk Through the Valley In Peace" is the same track that you will find on their phenomenal and highly recommended gospel collection, _Where the Sun Shall Never Go Down_, and I see a number of familiar-looking titles from other CDs. My advice is: if you're looking for a broad sample of the group's repertoire, then you can't go wrong here -- but if you've already got several Chanticleer albums, then you'll want to check your existing collection for potential duplications before buying this 'treasury.'

5 out of 5 stars Chanticleer: A Portrait.......2005-10-26

This is a marvelous singing group of all males with a little addition of Dawn Upshaw on a couple of pieces. They are thourally amazing at what they can sing with Male Voices usually unaccompanied. Obviously they have good strong Contra-Tenors that can manage the high notes without any problems. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys vocal music, unaccompanied and like Male Voices

5 out of 5 stars Vanilla Fudge.......2007-06-27

I saw these guys in concert back in the day and this recording brought it all right back to me. Just like being there. A great band during their time.

5 out of 5 stars The Fudge were the real thing...........2007-04-12

This is Vanilla Fudge's 2nd best album after their first one. It starts with an absolute killer version of Shotgun. It really blows you away. Their take on Some Velvet Morning is equally haunting and good, and Where Is Happiness? is one of their better original tracks. The Break Song (recorded live) is a bit perplexing. It starts out great, keeps going, but then gets a little tired in the middle, but then picks up for a great finish. There's a studio version of this song as well. It was never released initially until it was included as a bonus track on Rock and Roll, Fudge's last album. The live version here is the better of the two. The bonus tracks are really good as well. This, along with their 1st album, are the 2 best albums Fudge ever did. It's a shame they only did 5 albums (4 great ones, and a weird, useless one), because this band was awesome live and in the studio. They had an intensity unmatched at the time, and it's difficult to find a band now that is as powerful as they were. But Near the Beginning is one of their best, one that you can play over and over again....

5 out of 5 stars The Fudge at their musical peak!.......2007-01-14

Whilst this might not be the band's "best overall album" (that honour usually goes to the previous album, "Renaissance"), I would certainly have to argue that this album represents the band's best playing. Obviously, there's not many songs on this disc, because the "Break Song" takes up about 23 minutes of it, but there's a lot revealing about the Fudge's music from what little you do get to hear.
This album's release coincided with the release of the first Led Zeppelin album (early '69, and there were plenty of technological advancements taking place in the music world in the months between the release of "Renaissance" in mid-'68, and "Near The Beginning" in early '69. And at the point where better technology met the improved musical proficiency of EVERY member of this band, was no apparent than on this album.
The most noticeable improvement throughout this album was definitely the guitar playing and guitar "sound" of Vinnie Martell. The two previous albums, you hear Martell's guitar sound getting progressively louder, to where it is no longer overpowered by Mark Stein's organ. But on this album, not only is Martell's guitar getting louder--his playing is getting better! Whereas on previous albums, you hear mostly power chords and a few single-note 'freak-outs' from Martell, this album finds Martell playing genuine, bluesy, guitar solos! Not only that, but to aid in his soloing efforts, he finds not only better, clearer-sounding amplification, but he also discovers a new 'toy'--the "wah-wah pedal'. And, oh, what fun he had with that toy--particularly on "Shotgun" and the "Break Song"!
The best example I can find on this album of every member playing at their very best together is the "Break Song". That track, in particular, is full of surprises and technical abilities one would never have expected from VF. For those who have never heard, the "Break Song" is a rare glimpse of the Vanilla Fudge "live", and one step beyond the concept of the usual "let-me-introduce-the-guys-in-the-band" sort-of song. Every single member played at their very best--and perhaps even beyond--their own abilities! Imagine a jam with John Bonham on drums, Jon Lord (from Deep Purple) on organ, Jimmy Page on guitar, and John Mayall on vocals--that's exactly what the "Break Song" sounds like!! I don't know if this number was performed on one of the early tours that Led Zeppelin opened fot the Vanilla Fudge, but if Led Zeppelin had witnessed this performance from the sidelines, they had to be impressed! I know for a fact that John Bonham was a fan of drumnmer, Carmine Appice--and Carmine's drum solo on the "Break Song" has to have influenced Bonham's "Moby Dick" to some extent. Carmine's drum solo here has a little bit of what would become Bonham's "Moby Dick", but also a little bit of Ginger Baker's "Toad" from the first Cream album. It sounds like Carmine would carry some elements of his drum solo here, into his next band, Cactus, and their drum solo song, "Feels So Good" for the first Cactus album a year later.
But the "Break Song" has other surprises! This was the first introduction to the heavily-fuzzed out, "atomic bomb pyrotechnics" of Tim Bogert's bass solos--another element that Tim would bring with him to Cactus with Carmine Appice. And it also marked one of the band's first forays into "pure blues". The first time you ever hear Vinnie Martell play a very beautiful, slow blues guitar solo, reminiscent of the kind that Jimmy Page would later play in Led Zeppelin. It is also the first time Mark Stein sings "actual" blues lyrics, coming off sounding just like British blues singer John Mayall when he sings!
"The Break Song" is a treat--listening to a band going outside their formula, and moving into rare form, and new territory. When British hard rock bands of the '70s say that they were infleunced by the Vanilla Fudge, songs like the "Break Song" have to be near the top of the list of songs that infleunced them most!
As for the remainder of the tracks on "Near The Beginning", they're all good--even if they pale in comparison to the "Break Song'. Once again, Carmine Appice tries his hand at songwriting--"Where Is Happiness". It is rare to find a drummer in a band with that kind of songwriting ability. Like "Faceless People" on the previous album, "Renaissance", Carmine's songs convey a sense of loneliness and depression--but more in a dark, gothic, and mysterious sort-of-way, rather than a "bluesy" way. But you can tell that he wrote himself prominently into this song, as it is driven by a shuffle back-and-forth on the drums, swinging side-to-side, while Mark Stein's organ chirps along like crickets on a dark, gloomy night.
"Near The Beginning" is definitely worth your purchase--even for just the full-versions of both "Shotgun" and "The Break Song", which total 30 minutes. You wont even find some albums that long, and you certainly won't find the "Break Song" on any "best-of" compilations of the Vanilla Fudge. And yet, to me, "The Break Song" is "quintessential" Vanilla Fudge--not only showing where the Fudge were musically, but also where they were going after the Fudge was over! And after the Fudge was over a year later, it is a shame that Vinnie Martell didn't get pulled into Cactus with Bogert and Appice, as his talents were vastly improving, as evidenced by this album. Instead of Martell, Cactus would feature the talents of guitarist, Jim McCarty, whose skills on the guitar were at a level that Vinnie was approaching. Except that McCarty later proved to be more difficult to work with, and eventually led to the demise of Cactus. Sadly, Martell left the music business permanently after the break up of the Vanilla Fudge--Martell, once perhaps the band's least talented member, becomming one of the band's most prominent musical sounds on their final two albums, now having to waste his musical talent because Bogert and Appice chose a guy for their next band with more talent, yet harder to get along with.
Trust me, though. No collection of the Vanilla Fudge is complete without this vital piece of their musical history. "Near The Beginning" shows a band that is improving--and evolving!

5 out of 5 stars Hot Buttered White Soul (Rock).......2006-04-20

In that era, Vanilla Fudge was much more than a glorified garage band. When many groups were hastily thrown together by record producers to support a top 40 hit, the live performance ineptness of these bands left a bad taste in the mouths of their fans. Often, their ability to play live was lackluster compared to the recording. Sugarloaf was one such group. But VF was the real deal. They developed a very large loyal following for their live performances. Their acumen on their individual instruments was so intense it was scary. I saw the Fudge several times, once at the Hollywood Bowl with Hendrix. I also was in attendance at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles when the live side of this album was recorded. Contrary to one reviewer's comment here, the audience did not go to sleep during the "Break Song." Every eye and ear was glued to the stage for the entire 23 minutes. Tim Bogert's bas playing was light years ahead of his time. Carmine Appice's drumming was in a class by itself, matched only by Ginger Baker's paradiddles. Mark Stein's Hammond Organ was a classic enhancement of a huge rock sound and Vince Martell's guitar was inventive and melodic. All four of them sang, and sang very well. Tremendous harmonies. But the thing that is missing is their visual performance on stage. They were as dynamic even more than they were bombastic. If you never saw them, you missed something. And they thrilled you to watch them, all without makeup ala Kiss. The Fudge have reunited and they are touring on the East Coast. Here is hoping they come out West the summer of 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Great; after 35 years.......2006-02-19

No one but me seems to be impressed with the 23 minute-long Break Song. Sorry guys, nothing matches the 'wall of sound' heard here. The double bass drums, hammond B3 with leslie, Bogart's unique bass style and the wah-wah screaming guitar. Vince's guitar entry is the most soulful screaming blues guitar ever. The B3 solo (and blues entry) is epic and the drum solo; nobody puts it down like this anymore. ANY rock musician, be it guitar, bass, drums, keys, you need to hear this. As a musician, I could write pages on this live performance. Do yourself a favor. You will cherish this unique epic performance. I've worn out my vinyl copy and the cassette. Now I'm buying the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!.......2003-10-01

The mailperson brought my long awaited and longed for copy of Chris & Holly this afernoon. Being a major fan of both women, I knew I was going to like it. But I have to tell you something-I love this new cd! Holly's voice, always beautiful and strong, is even lovelier when meshed with Chris's. I've been playing it over and over and it's oh so good. You won't regret purchasing this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Two Who Stand for Peace.......2003-09-03

I bought this CD shearly because of my great respect for Holly Near, her music, her integrity and her politics. I'd never heard Cris Williamson, only of her, and didn't really want Holly's CD "cluttered" with another voice.

This is one of those special instances where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Cris and Holly together are so powerful. Their voices blend so well in places that they make one sound. The music of each compliments the other, and the collaberations are just about perfect. They are still "remarkably fearless" as they offer an alternative to violence and war through the beautiful lyrics of their own music and those covers that they chose to include.

John Buccino's piano is the perfect compliment to these voices and songs. He only adds to the whole and never overwhelms. Everything about this CD pleases me, right down to the liner notes. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars You all do not know Trance.......2007-01-08

You all are ridiculous, complaining about too many vocals. Take a minute and actually just listen to the music and the SOUND of the vocals. Yes, welcome to the world of electronica, the vocals are RARELY thought provoking. But are they ethereal and haunting? Yes. And for those of you who obviously hate vocals but love "dark gritty trance" you obviously have not listened to Ballymena which is easily one of his best songs ever, play it as loud as your system goes and give this album another shot. If that song doesn't move something deep within you, then you do not like trance music. Try Deep Dish or some deeper house music.

5 out of 5 stars Magic from Markus.......2006-11-18

Markus Schulz, as a songwriter is impressive. This album reveals the true talent of Markus! Of course he`s an excellent dj and producer, no doubt, but this album reveals his greater understanding for music. It`s magic! After 15 years enjoying house and trance, this is great! Friends who are not into this kind of music at all are dancing at tables....it says it all!

5 out of 5 stars Be "Near" Me Markus!.......2006-02-11

I don't know what all the fuss is about with this album on Amazon. CHILL! I finally got it today and I think it's one of the best trance artist albums around.

Markus Schluz rocks my world and "Without You Near" proves he is more than just another disc jockey who can spin other peoples' tunes. He is an artist ... and a musician ... and he's a pretty darn cute dude too. I can't wait to see him spin in MIAMI again. Mmmmm.

"First Time" is my favorite track.

3 out of 5 stars Without You Near.......2006-02-10

Markus Schulz's newest release "Without You Near" leaves me with mixed feelings. I can understand the wide range of reviews here on Amazon. I'm sort of neutral to the whole album.

I enjoyed the slower beats on the cd, but that's not what I was expecting to get. Actually some of the actual music on the album is quite majestic, moving and sweeping. It's that sort of epic dreamy dance that sounds so beautiful.

If the whole album were like that with minimal vocalists, I'd love it. However, the other reviewers are correct: there does seem to be too many vocals. Markus' music is strong enough to where he doesn't need that many vocals.

He's a tremendous producer and the music on here shows it. The vocals were ok for me (I can't say I disliked them, but I definitely did not love them). So overall a three-star release. Maybe worth a Used purchase but definitely not the full retail.

5 out of 5 stars Are you people kidding me?? Markus one more time........2006-01-29

Are you people kidding me, this is an excelent album, yep maybe a little too much vocals but that's ok. I want to remember you all, this is an artist album. This isn't any copilation or other people's songs put together. This is the real Markus 100% I love it.

This interesting Delius disc contains one of his first major works, the Florida Suite. It was while working on an orange plantation in Solano Grove, Florida, that Delius first captured that sense of nature's intoxication that permeates all of his best music. It was also there that he caught the syphilis that would eventually blind him, and later cause his death. Aren't you glad you knew that? Anyway, the other major work is the haunting tone poem Over the Hills and Far Away. The other pieces are short, entertaining, and ephemeral, but they're all performed with great skill and expertise. A very good deal at budget price. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Performances.......2005-01-18

If you like music descriptive a landscapes and the bucolic life, the Florida Suite is certainly what you are looking for. The Florida Suite stems from the time the young Delius spent on a plantation (sent by his father as a possible business future for his son) overseeing orange groves. Fortunately for us, Delius studied music and not business. Delius' father recognized his son's true vocation and sent him to the Leipzig Conservatory to study music; the Florida Suite was written during his student years. The first movement of the suite includes music (known as La Calinda) that was later used in Koanga, so it is appropriate to have the final scene of that opera included in this CD. The third movement recalls the plantation workers after the day is done and the dance they do that has Spanish feel to it. The final movement is a very effective evocation of night. The opera Koanga is set on a plantation in Louisiana, revolving around a slave-girl named Palmyra, which worked well with descriptive music about Florida.

Over the Hills and Far Away is a fantasy-overture. It is a joyous work that evokes a landscape of distant hills. The theme is the subject of several variations. The Idylle Printemps nicely expresses the season of the title and the Scherzo and La Quadroone were part of a larger suite for orchestra (subtitled Rhapsodie floridienne). This music is perfect if you have had a difficult day and want to relax.

The CD is nicely recorded and David Lloyd-Jones is a superb interpreter of Delius' music. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Naxos Recording at a Great Price.......2004-05-13

I am not all that familiar with the works of Frederick Delius, and I know I am probably not alone. His opera, A VILLAGE ROMEO AND JULIET is sometimes performed in his native England, but other than seeing a few of his works in the DECCA catalog, I knew little about this composer until Boston's local classical music station, WCRB began playing "By the River" from Delius' FLORIDA SUITE as what they like to call a "track to relax." I fell in love with the piece and wanted to add it to my collection, but had a hard time finding it, until I looked where else but the Naxos catalog and discovered this gem of a recording.. In FLORIDA SUITE, Delius is able to create an American feel to the music using the great attributes of the European classical tradition. The other tracks on the recording likewise demonstrate Delius' gifts as a composer. Delius's sound is a full and majestic one. One of the more curious tracks is an excerpt from his little known opera Koanga. The same techniques that made the other tracks beautiful likewise work in this operatic excerpt.

The English Northern Philharmonia under the direction of David Lloyd Jones honors their countryman well in this work. And, as so often is the case, Naxos delivers quality at a great price

5 out of 5 stars Such a great treat!.......2004-04-06

Frederick Delius' "Florida Suite" has got to be among the finest compositions of all time. Every line of it amply speaks for Delius' strong connection with and subtle appreciation for the myriad aspects of nature. Few works can match its elegant beauty, which is rendered so nicely on this performance. And the wonderful sound quality makes for very satisfying listening.

Among the quick results I've obtained from listening to this CD is a real appetite for the works of Mr. Delius. I read that he abandoned England in his youth for the managment of some orange groves of Florida, which he rather neglected in favor of his music. We are very lucky indeed that both the orange crop-and this sumptuous music-remain vital today. Mr. Delius has gone, but perhaps we will see his like once more, in a better world, to remind us of the power of nature.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful "Florida Suite".......2001-09-18

Delius, to me, is one of the most underappreciated composers. Often dismissed as a composer of light, impressionistic miniatures, he in fact composed several large scale works of which the "Florida Suite" may be the most famous. Made up of four movements the work contains some of the composers most delightful melodies including the famous "La Calinda" which he would use again in his opera "Koanga". This is its original setting and makes for a wonderful opening to the work. The second movement "By the River", a favorite of Sir Thomas Beecham, contains a wonderful flowing melody that just carries the listener along.

This CD is also of importance to the Delius fan as it contains several works which are recorded for the first time on this CD: Idylle Printemps,La Quadroone, and "Scherzo".

The recording has a wonderful full sound and David Lloyd-Jones, who has previously recorded several acclaimed releases for Naxos, gets excellent performances out of the members of the English Northern Philharmonia.

79 minutes of Delius in a recording that can stand up to the majors in every way.
