Album Description
CLAWD Records recording artists and contemporary folk/pop singer-songwriters THE WINSTONS announce the release of their third CD, COMING THROUGH.

Following up on the success of and acclaim for VIGNETTES (1998), ANDY and CHERYL WINSTON offer a new self-produced collection of ten songs, each transporting the listener into the lives of the characters inhabiting them.

The driving "Up In The Air" blurs reality and metaphor with a schizophrenic ricochet between the paralysis of one's own indecision and the entrapment that is the miracle of modern flight. A lover recalls a romance and its dissolve into regret as the bus leaves the station in the modern country-flavored "Whatever Happened To The Two Of Us." In the lush "Sleepy Town," a pilgrim reconciles with the former life that set him on the path, and realizes that there is no returning. In homage to the story telling of more traditional country music, "The Great Escape" sketches a miscreant who can't seem to get it right. The graceful "Darkness Too Soon" deals honestly and directly with feelings of loss. With a sinister vibe, "Gossip" cautions each of us to mind our own business. "Ridge Road Gravel," a bluegrass gem written by the great Norman Blake, expresses a longing for what lies ahead and what is past. The rocking "Judy's On The Loose" evokes a misspent but memorable night in the company of the kind of girl your mother warned you about. The instrumental "Mother's Day" thanks her for all the love and good advice. The metaphysical "Coming Through," inspired by the story of the incapacitated expedition leader who placed one last phone call to his pregnant wife before dying on Mt. Everest in May 1996, closes the album like an echo of eternity.

Joining THE WINSTONS on COMING THROUGH is the rhythm section for the nationally syndicated radio program E-TOWN®, Christian Teele on drums and Chris Engleman on bass. Special musical guests include such luminaries as: Howdy Skies recording artist Tim O'Brien (Hot Rize) on mandolin and bouzouki; slide guitarist, Grammy® award winner, and Sugar Hill recording artist Sally Van Meter (Good Ol' Persons); and Valerie Vigoda (GrooveLily, Joe Jackson, Tina Turner, Cindy Lauper) on electric violin.

Coming Through

Coming Through, Music, The Winstons, Contemporary Folk, Folk-Pop, Folk/pop singer-songwriters and Kerrville New Folk Finalists (2003) acclaimed for harmonies "like the smoothest sipping whiskey" (Victory Review), and songs that "sound like Bruce Cockburn meets The X-Files" (FolkWax).

5 out of 5 stars Drop dead gorgeous.......2005-07-04

Every now and then you get a CD come along where some really outstanding artist allows themself to just let their hair down for a moment. Of course it has to be done with aplomb and thorough good taste adding their unique touch of brilliance while sucessfully avoiding any hint of kitch. Russian Early Music pioneer Anatoly Grindenko here records songs from the time of Tsarist Russia. These are songs that transient political regimens would have tried to replace in the popular affection with political songs. Yet somehow these songs have survived in the hearts and affections of the Russian people and this peasant tradition of folk song that refused to die is presented with Grindenko's usual expertise and sung expertly with the utmost affection. In fact the songs were always sung by this choir for their own private fun but excluded from 'serious' concert performances. The quality of singing, as can be expected under Grindenko's expert choral direction, is superb througout. The end result is a lovely CD that can be highly recommended to anybody who just loves to listen to beautiful singing. After all the works of Tchaikovsky, Borodin and Stravinsky draw heavily on Russian folk song as a rich source of thematic material but any serious music lover would enjoy this CD just as much with its range of songs ranging from boisterous to charming to melancholy. Opus 111, as usual, provide expertly engineered sound to match. The end result is a drop dead gorgeous CD that will delight anyone lucky enough to discover this secret gem.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant !.......2001-12-26

This recording is a fantastic example of the russian choral tradition. Wonderful selections sung with obvious passion .The rousing patriotic tunes will make you want to march to the front, the romantic ballads will make you wish you never left and the songs of hearth and homeland will make you inch closer to your loved ones. If you have a passion for things "russian" this one just might keep you occupied for a while.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute BEST music for rocking a baby to sleep!!!!.......2006-01-25

I received the Sleepy Baby CD as a shower gift from a friend for our first child 2 1/2 years ago. We played the CD every night since she was an infant while rocking her to sleep and it worked LIKE A DREAM. It'll even put the parent to sleep!! We used the CD until she was about 20 months old. There's no need to try other music out there...this is by far the best. We're expecting our second child in March and have ordered another copy. (The first one was used so much it now skips on a couple of the tracks.) I hope soon to try the other titles in this series since I've been so happy with this one.

5 out of 5 stars relaxing music.......2006-01-13

I was looking for a good sleeping/nap time CD for my 1 year old daughter. Actually her sister (she is 3 years old) loves this CD and called "Quiet time" music. So, now we can sit down and relax together with this CD!
Not for driving--coz make you sleepy!!

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for The String Tribute to Maroon5! Fans will LOVE IT!.......2005-07-31

Being a HUGE Maroon 5 fan, I knew that I had to listen to "Under Your Skin". I didn't think that I would like it at first, because there are no vocals. Bottom line - THIS ALBUM IS AMAZING! It is so beautiful with just strings!

"Harder To Breathe" is more of a rock song, so you wouldn't expect strings to take it on properly. The strings compliment the song perfectly, though! "This Love" sounds LOVELY, it seems to be a song just meant for the strings. Listening to "Shiver" is so interesting, because the strings take on the guitar JUST RIGHT. Moving on to "She Will Be Loved"...wow. That's all I have to say about it! Wow.

"Tangled" and "The Sun" both sound beautiful. Both of them also sound like songs made for the strings. "Must Get Out" is a song that you would definatly not picture with strings...but it is pulled off!

When you listen to "Sunday Morning", the beginning is rather slow and there are not many strings. You may feel a bit dissapointed, but near the end it kicks off and the song is wonderful! "Secret" is also another wonderful track. The strings at the beginning are so slow and deep...haunting, even.

Now, "Through With You" sounds INCREDIBLE. This is, yet again, a song MADE for strings. "Not Coming Home" is equally incredible, with the interesting harmonization. Finally, the last track, "Sweetest Goodbye", is a beautiful closesure to the album. It'll leave you wishing the album was longer!

If you are a Maroon 5 fan, or you just love songs w/ strings, I completely reccomend this album. It is PERFECT to listen to in the bath, driving, outside having a drink...it's also good background music. Plus, since there are no vocals, you can sing along to it yourself! I do it all the time!

So what are you waiting for? This is an extraordinary album, just waiting for you to buy it!

3 out of 5 stars Legendary West Coast Crew!!.......2004-06-11

This album is important for many reasons. Not only is it a good representation of late 80s/early 90s West coast hip-hop, its practically a who's-who of some of hip-hop's greatest artists. The Rhyme Syndicate was Ice-T's crew, and had a lot of respect in the early 90s. Some of the members of the crew included Everlast, W.C., Coolio, Lord Finesse, Divine Styler, Hen G & Evil E, Donald D, Bilal Bashir & DJ Battlecat among others...Everlast represents here with a dope, fast-paced song produced by Bilal Bashir. Another highlight is the track by Low Profile (W.C., Coolio and DJ Aladdin), and they deliver an angry song, the type that made the radio scared to play 'gangsta rap' before Dr. Dre's "The Chronic"...unfortunately, the group never blew up as a crew mainly because the managers of the group were too interested in focusing on Ice-T alone, rather than promoting his group members, as record labels do today. (A nice follow-up to this album came in the form of the "Trespass" soundtrack with Ice-T, AMG, Lord Finesse, Donald D, WC and Coolio all making appearances). Fortunately though, Lord Finesse went onto bigger success with Diggin' In The Crates. W.C. has had a successful career with both the Maad Circle and Westside Connection. Coolio dominated 1995 with "Gangsta's Paradise", "Too Hot" and "Fantastic Voyage". Everlast has enjoyed success with both House of Pain and as a solo artist. Bilal Bashir would later discover the group Styles of Beyond.Divine Styler would release three albums that would become the foundation for emo-rap artists from Definitve Jux and Anticon. Most of the other artists eventually released solo albums. Even though Ice-T is mostly known for his acting these days, he knew what talent was, and it along with perseverence, helped many of these guys succeed, outside of what could've been one of the best hip-hop posses ever.

4 out of 5 stars Not an Average Sound.......2005-10-11

I have been to several of their concerts. They soudn pretty good live. HRC seems to be ever changing with their music. I don't mean in the sense that they did a total 180. When songs are written, they are written for a purpose. The artist does not expect you to understand him or her 100% completely. This album is the type where you like it or you hate it. I like the song "Save You" though its not a powerful as "The Pharmacist" or "Radiation Suit" from their last album, Sorry About Tomorrow, which I thought was their best one so far out of three.

    4 out of 5 stars hah?.......2005-02-28

i dont understand why people hated this album so much. I myself thought it was very exceptional and i really enjoyed it. To be honest, i don't feel that it sounds much different from there previous releases, well at least not as much people make it sound. It's not like they COMPLETELY converted to a new music genre. There are a couple tracks that bore me, but there are some really awesome tunes on here. THese guys are incredible live as well, and as soon as i heard some of the new stuff live i couldnt wait to pick this up, i wasnt disappointed at all, this is not there best, but i still believe that it is a solid release

1 out of 5 stars Sorry about..... this reality coming through.......2004-11-10

I'm a fan of HRC but this record is just plain bad.
The lyrics are painfull to listen too (ie "unfaithful of lies" ughh!) The 4th track "Cheap Trick" makes ME feel embarrased for Andy Jackson for actualy writing it. The sound is good but it's
all over the place. Not in a good way either.
I'll check them out live when they come through, but I hope they
only play a few cuts from this step backwards in their career.
If you sang these lyrics along with Justin Timberlake's music,
you would have some serious top 40 type -crappy hits.

    "in the moonlight you fade
in the dawn of a new day
    at the sunlight I blaze
want to feel like this every day" from Moonlight Sunlight

    3 out of 5 stars yep.......2004-11-09

four records into their career, hot rod circuit are at an odd place. never ones to be lumped in with the nu-emo craze of the early 21st century, they've found themselves forced to make some sort of choice in the direction they choose to go with their sound. their first two records were great because they stood out amongst their peers. you must figure that they were touring the country with bands like new found glory, jimmy eat world and the juliana theory right around y2k, bands who would help usher in a new phenomenon in teenage pop culture (disagree with me? look around the local high school or college, and check out all the kids with band pins all over their messanger bags with spock haircuts and tight girls pants). the irony in this is that these bands never meant to usher in this new era. while many of those other bands from around that time period have become reluctant icons to legions of teens and young adults, hot rod circuit has been seemingly left in the dust. sure, they made the leap onto a larger quasi-indie label in vagrant records (long story) but they're still opening shows for younger, inferior bands. sorry about tomorrow was probably their big hope at making a record that would resonate with the kiddies, but it suffered from poor production. 2 years later they offer us reality's coming through, which is an odd record in that it's not so much bad is it suffers from a lack of continuity. i will say that i don't like the single, save you, but other than that, the tracks are all decent at worst, with a few standouts. there is even a song that charts some new territory for hrc (the best you ever knew). the record only gets 3 stars though for it's lack of continuity as previously mentioned as well for what else it's missing: passionate emotion and dynamics (if i knew now...) and/or furious energy (if it's cool...). hopefully somewhere along the line hot rod can find a new direction.

      Album Description

Life at Sea is a Chicago based quartet dedicated to crafting edgy pop with a flair for mood and texture. Their influences range from The Police to Jane's Addiction to Archers of Loaf. These influences and their unique style of playing come together to create an interesting and familiar sound reminiscent of some of these bands, as well as other bands that created their own style - like Radiohead, The Cure, and REM. The lyrics deal with themes of isolation, redemption and veracity, and their live set employs the use of samplers and film footage. These boys can captivate both new and old rock, indie rock, and punk fans alike. All of the boys have recorded numerous times and released many other records with many other bands (The Wayouts, Man is Five, L' Spaerow, The Firebird Band, The Dynamites, and Braid - to name the familiar). This record was recorded with Alex Gross at Studio 11 in Chicago from July - September 2003. With Erik Shepard on vocals, guitar, and doing some programming; Chris Broach on guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals; Jason Weitzman on bass, and backing vocals; and Steve Znavor on drums and in control of MIDI sequencing and programming.

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-05-01

I love this record! It is so refreshing to hear such great music coming out of Chicago. This album reminds me of some of my favorite bands (e.g. The Cure, The Police, Fugazi) but still manages to have a sound all their own. I am amazed by Life at Sea's ability to layer intelligent, interesting sounds and still create hooks that continue to stay in my head hours after the record ends. I can't wait to see what the band will put out next!
