About the Artist
Whoever said that experience is the best teacher must have had Mindy Jostyn in mind. The multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter seems to have done everything except play by the rules during her career, opting instead to follow her own unique path. And what a path it has been so far. Jostyn went from years of performing at weddings and barrooms to playing in arenas with Billy Joel, Joe Jackson and John Mellencamp to recording her own album, Five Miles From Hope, with help from... read more

Album Description
Photos by Tony Nagelmann Click on for larger versionBlue Stories is a collection of songs about people and their plights. Different characters struggle with circumstance. 15 sad but human melodramas. Says Mindy, "I've tried to treat these people compassionately. I'd prefer that listening to the CD not be an experience in darkness -- rather, one in a semi-pale shade of blue. Twilight blue, say, with a smattering of stars."

Mindy describes a bit about the audio samples available on this site:

Sam's Back With Sadie -- two women talking in a quickstop, in a small town where they've lived too long, overheard by a third woman, me. Neo-celtic.

Don't Turn Away -- a ballad in the woman-who-loves-too-much vein. She tries to soothe a walking-wounded boy.

Empathetic Woman -- set in a honky-tonk piano bar. It's getting late. Honky-tonk. A downtrodden man's response to a woman's complaints about her hard life.

Rock City Road -- final title of the "name this song about a road" contest. (Congratulations, Herm Templeman). It turns out there's a Rock City Road in two nearby towns (to me) -- Red Hook and Woodstock, NY. There's even an antiques shop called "Rock City Relics" -- a line from the song. Can we hope that in years to come people will describe themselves with this metaphor? Asked "how are you?", folks will reply: "I'm on Rock City Road, man" or "In a Rock City frame of mind". (Even now, if performed within 30 miles of where I live, the hook "Rock City Road" will draw a titter, two small cheers, and isolated pockets of polite applause). My excuse to play train-style harmonica a la Blind Sonny Terry.

That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be -- a despairing view of marriage, written by the guy I'm now married to. A Carly Simon hit in 1970, it is still frequently used for the first wedding dance by misunderstanding couples.

5 out of 5 stars A previously unsung great!.......2007-07-02

Ed Reed's singing is truly wonderful and without artifice. The first because it reflects his personality, and the second because it's unnecessary for someone with his life story. At an age when many are in their twilights, Ed's hitting yet another highlight! His performances are transporting, and continue the tradition of the great jazz singers, combining phrasing, melodies and standards in a fine style worthy of audience.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to the wonder that is Ed Reed..........2007-06-13

I fell in love with his music, in a pizza shop (Cheeseboard Pizza!) in Berkeley, California. I didn't know him or his story then, just his voice, and the nights when he was singing were nights of magic I treasured. I have to say immediately that I cannot lay claim to the words that will do his talent justice.

This is an extraordinary debut album for Mr. Reed at age 78, and oh what the world missed all those years before. This is a work that came out of an encounter he had at jazz camp (just a few years ago!) with Peck Allmond, the Brooklyn based multi-instrumentalist, and Bud Spangler, who each heard Ed Reed sing and wanted immediately to hear his CDs. They were stunned to find he had none, and they, along with Ed's wife Diane, decided that had to change.

Ed Reed grew up in Watts and loved to sing always, even sang with Mingus when he was young, but found himself spending many long years in Folsom and San Quentin due to a heroin addiction. He performed in prison with an inmate big band, but he took a long time after the years in prison and addiction to really think of himself as a musician. The songs he learned in prison were learned the hard way - a half hour of jazz allowed a week on the radio - a song heard maybe once every few weeks, words and music laboriously memorized in fragments over periods of months. When he sings those songs though, you can feel the emotion in every moment, and his intonation and phrasing are beautiful.

The music on this album speaks for itself. Be sure to not let his age deceive you, his rich baritone is at its prime. There's a classic ageless elegance here, and you'll hear a version of "A Sleepin Bee" that you won't forget. Thelonious Monk's "Ask Me Now" and "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" both resonate. Ed is an erudite scholar of jazz with a prodigious memory for details and connections, and the songs on this album reflect this. It is a love story of a man applying his master craft to his art.

In person, Ed Reed combines statements of uncanny wisdom with a joyful wit; he keeps saying that this CD release is "like a dream". Well, if so, I hope none of us awaken anytime soon! Currently he works as a health educator for several agencies in the Bay Area. His personal program is called "The Art of Living Well"; may he keep doing so himself so there will be more recordings to come. His performance schedule in the Bay Area is really heating up so look for him in person near you, and Boston - thank your lucky stars - he's heading your way this Fall. He's a grand gentleman, and his voice is a wonder. You won't feel the same after you hear him; buy this now.

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT CD!.......2004-04-30

I first became acquainted with Pat Donohue's great musical talent in the early 1970s when we were in college together at Marquette University. I was thrilled a few years ago to discover that he had a number of CDs available. Life Stories is my absolute favorite. There are a number of fantastic songs on this CD, starting right off with "This is the Beginning" (hauntingly beautiful), the catchy "Goin' Home/Oh Suzanna", "The Hard Way", the chilling "I Don't Know That Guy" and the snappy "My Attorney Bernie." This CD showcases Pat's brilliant guitar playing (a guitar picker of the year and a regular on Prarie Home Companion) along with his great songwriting and lyrics. You'll thank me for getting this CD.

Don't get me wrong, DG is in my opinion the greatest guitar player there ever was. He mastered several genres on guitar and could change from one to the other at the drop of a hat. Danny does everybody....but nobody does Danny. I've got most all of his official releases and a few bootlegs also and am pretty well informed as to DG.....but I don't understand one thing:

Why does no other reviewer bother to tell you that this is a pure jazz CD that is featuring Joshua Redman on horns and that Danny is audible on only three of the tracks? Yeah, he does his thing for those three tracks, but all in all, this is NOT really a Gatton CD and you won't hear much of him on this one. Also, this is REAL jazz - that three cups of coffee on an empty stomach, shaky handed - nerve jangled stuff that is impossible to relax to.

Just wanted to inform ya about what no one else would. I gave my copy to a Redman fan and he loved it - not my cup of tea.

        5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2007-02-08

Of the many albums I have from Danny Gatton, this one is perhaps my favorite. This cd really puts Danny in a pure straight ahead jazz atmosphere and he preforms flawlessly. Danny's technique has always been such a mystery with his use of octaves, tremolos, double stops and lush chords. These are always preformed with a clean sound which is so refreshing from the typical shred masters of today. It is interesting to me that so many modern players seem to ignore these other aspects of virtuosity in the pursuit of just blinding speed. The other players all do a stellar job and compliment each other wonderfully. I am instantly transformed into New York's metropolis listening to jazz street musicians and smoke filled rooms of big band music. The last track "One for Lenny" is particularly moving and inspiring. I think I enjoyed this version even more than his version on "The Untouchable". A true gem from a lost giant.

5 out of 5 stars A tour de force .......2006-11-22

The original concept of New York Stories was to bring a diverse selection of musicians together in the studio, record the jam session, and repeat the process with different players on subsequent volumes. The other volumes never happened, but this recording is one of the most exciting jazz discs I've ever heard. Those assembled on this gathering are: Danny Gatton (guitar), Bobby Watson (alto sax), Roy Hargrove (trumpet), Joshua Redman (tenor sax) on his recording debut, Franck Amsallem (piano), Charles Fambrough (bass), and Yuron Israel (drums). Each musician, less Redman, brought a composition to the session where it was recorded in the least takes possible, to create a spontaneous sound that is stellar! Unfortunately, this is currently out of print, but if you have never heard this and enjoy these artists, you owe it to yourself to seek out this masterwork.

5 out of 5 stars Some People Just Don't Get It.......2006-09-08

As someone who knew Danny Gatton casually, I think his playing hardly needs defending, no matter what genre he chose to take on. But the text of "Disappointed" is a prime example of that dried-out, bloodless yen for conformity that marked the decades prior to the 90s among jazz "purists". Those who considered themselves "true" jazz afficianadoes tried relentlessly to shove the form into a mold and, predictably, it never worked. The pure nature of jazz, more than any other form of music, is change, and Danny Gatton will go down in guitar history as almost the "missing link", bridging rock, country, rockabilly, and jazz. I can only feel sad for anyone who hears what he's done in this context, with these players, and is too closed-off to appreciate it. One of the previous reviewers said it was fortunate that Gatton tried to sound like no one but Danny Gatton. Amen and Bless You. Danny's creativity, chops, melodic sense, rhythmic feel, and phrasing were certainly up to the task and the completely inappropriate attempt to compare him to Jim Hall simply slights two great guitarists. The Lenny Breau tribute is, I think, one of the most lyrical, moving, and informed pieces of jazz guitar chordal composition I've ever heard and his interplay with Redman and Hargrove throughout the disc is breathtaking. If he takes the jazz purists a little outside the box, good on him. Most could benefit vastly from being forced out past the edges of their tiny confines. Danny did just that in every genre and the music was always the better for it. What a player. What a loss.

5 out of 5 stars Stunned by the two star review..............2006-07-02

This is by far one of the best examples of modern jazz ever recorded. It pays important respect to where jazz came from in the first place (blues) and explors the possibilities always present in this venue. The reviwer who gave a scant 2 star review knows little about jazz. One of those cats that digs the same old tunes done over and over like classical music, no doubt you'll find some Kenny G in his collection and confuse that with jazz as well.

Not being able to hear the guitar in the lower registers--lol. Oh well, one should not depend on BestBuy for all our electronic needs!

This cd is a classic if for no other reason than the fact that these cats will never play togather in the line up on the CD ever again. And they all all huge artist now. This was recorded when no one knew who any of these guys. So count yourself lucky to own it and enjoy. In reguards to the guitar playing on the CD i can only say that I am happy Danny Gatton didnt try and "sound" like anyone but Danny Gatton. His playing is amazing and is what makes this recording so fresh (telecaster bad jazz guitar choise, please! tell that to Mike Stern).

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Modern Celtic.......2006-08-07

Beth Pattersons music is excellent. Her mix of cajun and celtic styles (I am a huge Celtic Music fan), is awesome. Her writing style and musical talent complement each other very well. It is like listening to an ancient Celt write music from their experiences today. I couldn't be happier. Hope to see her in concert some day. It's a long drive to where she performs but I just might get on my bike and go!!

5 out of 5 stars Even better live.......2006-04-23

I'll admit to some bias, since I am a friend of Beth's, but if she really sucked I wouldn't bother writing any review at all. Or dragging friends to her gigs whenever she's in my neck of the woods. Or catching her at pubs when I'm in New Orleans. Beth's an extremely talented musician with a great sense of humor, and both tend to come out best when she's in front of an audience. Sure, her studio work is damn good, but live is even better, so I'm quite happy she finally did a live album. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy.
