The U.K.-based Sneaker Pimps combine standard rock guitar parts with trip-hop beats and clear white-soul vocals, and, when strumming an acoustic guitar (as on the first single, "6 Underground"), the trio is virtually indistinguishable from Luscious Jackson. While using electronica's signifiers--jungle's rattle, trip-hop's dark churn, ambient's synth washes, hip-hop's samples--Sneaker Pimps never stray far from the comfy world of the pop song. Becoming X's opener, "Low Place Like Home," is only one step from Alanis, while the rousing closer is as breathy and sunny as the Cardigans. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasure.......2007-03-08

Love this CD. Not the kind of music I normally go for, but some good tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Becoming X.......2007-02-12

Excellent example of the Sneaker Pimps style. I love the mood this album sets and the total listening experience.

3 out of 5 stars Eh... it's ok........2007-01-11

I bought this CD b/c I remembered it from a long time ago when it first came out, but, I have to admit, I was disappointed. The songs didn't really grab me like I remembered. 2 great songs: Spin Spin Sugar and Six Underground are wonderful! It's the stuff in between that you'll hear, memorize and maybe tap a toe or two to, but not your whole foot.

5 out of 5 stars Dark, sexy, and some cynical bubblegum? Yes please........2006-12-08

The trip hop movement that flourished in the early 90s, thanks to pioneering groups like Massive Attack and Tricky, broke open the floodgates to lots of other creative artists seeking to escape rock, pop, and hip hop conventions of the time. Among these second-gen artists, the Sneaker Pimps in their first lineup may shine the very brightest. Just a quick sonic glance at Becoming X yields an album that is rich with addictive hooks, sexy grooves, and Kelli Dayton (now Kelli Ali)'s strangely spooky bubblegum pop vocals. This combination of the sexy and cynical makes for a unique listening experience that few other artists can claim to have created.

It may well be Dayton's vocals that sublimate these recordings into perfection. Although ample credit is due to the solidity of the foundation on which her part stands--the downtempo grooves between the smooth, driving drums and the dark, languid bass--Dayton's voice puts a sheen over the sound that is remarkable. You can almost picture a cyberpunk angel singing about her fall from grace. Yet Dayton is most apparently human in her lyrics. Although Becoming X is riddled with clamor over its sensual nature, it also tackles numerous subjects ranging from pop star subjugation, failing religion, and alienation.

Chris Corner's additions to the album as principle composer are the second greatest feature of Becoming X. As with the dynamic vocal/lyrical ideas, the musical compositions found here cannot be placed into a single box. Starting with "Low Place Like Home", a piece which feels as vindictively cynical as it does spooky, to the alluring, airy sounds of "6 Underground", to the acoustic bite of "Post-Modern Sleaze" and the lonely "How Do", Becoming X features an admirable range of sonic expression and emotive vocabulary.

If you've been looking for a way into the realm of trip hop and electro-pop, this is definitely one of the best routes to take. Alternatively, if you've grown tired of other artists that are either too heavy, wall-of-sound or too focused on hip-hop influences and circuitous synth beats, this CD is a unique escape from those. Either way, it is virtuosic in its context and entirely worth checking out. If, when you first listen, you can feel the tug of Kelli Dayton's bittersweet vocals or Chris Corner's blackhearted grooves, you won't want to pass this up. Once you've tasted Becoming X, you'll never want to give it up.

4 out of 5 stars needs less (or no) keyboard.......2007-07-12

the guitar is decently heavy and really good, but as soon as you start getting into it, they stop and play some retarted keyboard thing. the vocals are pretty good, except for the actual singing, which is totally out of place. i have nothing against actual singing in the choruses and such, but come on. that is just annoying. don't think i'm some loser who only likes metal because he thinks he's hardcore and listens to slipknot and stuff like a lot of posers do, but i cannot deal with the random whimpy keyboard in every single song. hey becoming the archetype, take all the keyboard stuff, put it one song, call that song a "ballad" and put it as the last song on the album and you would be one of my favorite bands. instead i barely listen to you guys. i gave this 4 stars because of the couple good songs on it and the guitar is really good, but i still wouldn't buy it. i would however, buy Autopsy, Epoch of War, and Construct and Collapse on iTunes and then buy their second album, which i loved. read my review of that album and don't send me hate mail, seeing as how i was the only one disappointed in this album.

4 out of 5 stars If you're here, you're getting it.........2007-06-30

I really hate reviews... Music is subjective in itself, so to offer a review is not much more than talking to people that have similar interests... with that being said...

This is really good stuff, I mean really good. The production quality is excellent and the substance in this music must be heard to be appreciated. I didn't get to this place in music easily and can certainly understand people that don't "get" this style / sound, but if you do, you are in for a treat.

As the first song opens with a snobbish little hammered dulcimer bit that builds with some grove and then just flat out assaults the listener with technical, massive blasts that demand as much from your volume knob as can be tolerated.

This band breaks away from the norm and gets you to another place.

5 out of 5 stars The Physics of Fire - Best Metal Album in Recent Years.......2007-05-21

Since their first release, "Terminate Damnation", Becoming the Archetype has by far become one of my favorite metal bands of all time. I listened to the first album so much that I know all of the lyrics to every song, and have never really looked at a lyrics cheat-sheet. So, needless to say, when BTA announced the new CD I was excited. All I could really see happening when the lineup change was announced was something good, especially after I listened to some of Aletheian's stuff (the band which Alex Kenis also plays with).

The first thing I can say is that this album is a lot different from the first. While the first seemed to sort of carry on in the same death-metalcore style previous trekked out by legendary band Living Sacrifice, this CD definately heads in a more progressive direction. All I can say is that the lineup change with adding Kenis in on lead guitar made them go where few (American) Christian metal bands have gone in recent years. While the last album was somewhat lacking in technically challenging lead guitar parts, The Physics of Fire is chock-full of guitar solos and licks that would make any lover of Steve Vai, Rusty Cooley, or John Petrucci cry.

I can also say that the mixing and production quality on the CD is a step up from the first. Terminate Damnation's mixing and whatnot, while excellent, was done in more of a style that suits metalcore bands such as As I Lay Dying and August Burns Red, while The Physics of Fire's mix and production reaks of Opeth and Scar Symmetry-esque dynamics.

Another thing to note about this album is something not seen very often - it's a concept album, which I believe adds greatly to the value and integrity of the music. Every single song on the CD intertwine with each other to tell an epic story, with 4 of the songs creating the 4 part "The Physics of Fire" Suite.

I'd also rate this album high on playability...This CD has dominated my mp3 player, my Winamp playlists, and my car stereo ever since i picked it up on release date.

Go out, get this album, and prepare for the horns to be upped instantly.

3 out of 5 stars Song writing and vocals take a step backwards.......2007-05-20

I've just gotten this album after absolutely loving Terminate Damnation and I'm really struggling to listen to it to the end. The two changes in band members have really had an influence on this work, especially the leads.

What I really liked about the 1st album seems to have disappeared. The vocal variety has pretty much gone with Jason pretty much belting out an angry shout more akin to Hardcore/Metalcore bands. There are no low growls (like in "one man parade" and "elegy"), no high pitched shreaks like in the opening to Elegy and through it. His main vocal style remains unchanged but with fewer changes in pitch, less growls etc. Even the vocal mixing is different, lacking the richness and depth of Terminate Damnation. Vocals are now rather flat and one dimensional with little overlaying of low and high together.

I normally love clean vocals (the new Dark Tranquility album - fiction is brilliant with Mikael Stanne's vocals haunting beautiful) but Alex Kenis's vocals sound weak and fluffy, syrupy sweet. Please either find a strong singer or forget the clean vocals.

The production seems muddied compared to the crisp, clean production style of the last album. The symbols are not as crisp and sharp as TD with guitars sounding hollower and flat.

Alex Kenis tries hard with his leads but honestly, they all sound pretty much the same with too much fretboard gymnastics and little feeling. Far too much hammering and not enough pinching or plucking, no wa wa pedals, with the tone sounding too soft (to cover up the sounds of his hands moving on the strings?) and never changing. Compared to TD (Terminate Damnation) leads (No Fall Too Far- lovely use of wa wa pedal and great feeling, Ex Nihilo - fits the rhythmn perfectly but not long enough :-), Into Oblivion - the acoustic lead is a thing of beauty) nothing comes close to them on POF. Unimaginative and repetitive....repetitive....have a said that before?

I really miss the style of songwriting of TD. This new album just doesn't have the slower, heavier mix of the old one or the change of tempo's. POF is overall faster without the brilliance of TD, no outstanding track like Elegy. Nocturne is the instrumental on POF, which is nice with guitar and piano but not as well written or absorbing as "Night's Sorrow" or "Denouement" and more repetitive than them both.

I really was excited when I heard BTA had a new album out but I confess I was worried when I heard about the band changes. It happens all the time, band gets new members and sounds different. This road is well worn with BTA packing their bags and now making the journey of change, evolving into something i'm not sure I like.

Well cya fellas. When you find out that the grass isn't greener on the other side and you miss home, i'll be here waiting.

4 out of 5 stars Bringing it with fire!.......2007-05-16

Fire is an apt way to describe this album, 'cause it smokes. Losing two members and adding one (Alex from Aletheian, and we know he can be technical) hasn't taken away from this groups sound at all, it's as heavy and as technical as ever. The album opens by easing you into it with a little instumental softness then the pummeling ensues at full force. The first song especially reminds me of something a Communic or Scar Symmetry might do at their heaviest and has a melodic death metal feel that the album never quite reaches again. If you liked the last one you should really dig into this and discover the greatness it holds. The one thing holding it back is falling into some metalcore boringness at times and the clean singer does not do a very good job. Other then that it is a sonic brain cleaning that brings the metal and the lyrics are very Biblically focused again. BTA is bringing the metal and showing that christians can be as loud and as technical as any band out there.

5 out of 5 stars sorry.......2007-07-15

i said some harsh words in my review of their other album, but this album is much better. the keyboard is less random and more hardcore, the vocals are better, and the guitar is amazing. i had ordered a shirt with the first album and sort of regreted doing so, but now i'm glad i did. this is an amazing band, so make sure you realize i was disappointed in their other album, not the band. i did give it 4 stars, mostly for the few good songs on it, so this one definantly deserves a 5. just buy Autopsy, Epoch of War, and Construct and Collapse on iTunes to get all the good songs on their other album and then buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars I Get it, But I Just Don't Get It.......2007-06-10

No matter how much I listen to this album, I can't seem to hear the greatness that most other reviewers here. To hear some people (especially on Christian Rock sites like Firestream), these guys are the greatest thing to come along in 15 years. Are they good musicians? Yes. Do they make some really good music? During a lot of the CD, yes. But at other times, I felt like they were putting stuff in a song just because they thought it was something cool, paying little attention to whether it actually made the song better. I gave the CD four stars, because I do think it's good music, but as much as I try, I can't see this being a 5 star album.

5 out of 5 stars A brutal blend of metal styles.......2007-05-12

Becoming the Archetype's musical style lies somewhere between metalcore and death metal. That being said, they take the best of both worlds. vocals range from screams to guttural growls, guitars range from acoustic to VERY down tuned insane rifts with machinegun-like drums setting the beat...if you like brutal, loud, technical music, this is the CD for you. It was one of the first death/metalcore bands I started listening to when I stopped with Nu Metal. Doing so was like starting a workout program after sitting on the couch and eating junk food: At first, you don't know how you are ever going to get used to this, but you know it's better for you, and in the end, you won't want to go back.

Becoming the Archetype's lyrics may not SEEM overtly Christian, but they actually are VERY Christian, but they are just deeper and more theological than simply growling "JESUS!!"

All in all, an excellent CD!

5 out of 5 stars this band does not stop short of amazing........2007-04-22

Becoming The Archetype is an amazing band. this album really shows off their versatility. their sound is a blend of keyboard and guitar passages.
this is an album for eclectic Christian metalheads who like a variety of sounds. I recommend this band if you like Petra(R.I.P.), Stryper, Bloodgood(R.I.P), Mortification, Still Remains, Demon Hunter, Zao, As I Lay Dying, Underoath, Extol, the Showdown, Norma Jean, Flee The Seen, Kutless, Narnia, Tourniquet, Hangnail, and Jacob's Dream, and various other metalcore bands, whether Christian or secular.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Awesome Metal.......2007-04-06

I really dislike those ignorant jerks (to put it in polite and unbannable terms) who continually say oh these guys are christians therefore they are not metal. shut up. who cares what they sing about really. if they want to be christians let them, its called freedom of religion.

its funny these people. Go to a Deicide review. on there these same people i mentioned above will be complaining about the christians talking about deicide's lyrical content, saying "its just music lighten up". yeah, i say HYPOCRITE to you folks. ha ha!

and to just ignore and forget this band just because of their lyrical content is a horrible mistake. these guys are very talented musicians that make brutally heavy music, but at the same time sounding unique and original, not like half the bands comning out nowadays.

this album did take a little getting used to. you know, when you first hear an album and your like "ehh its okay" and then later down the road your like "AWESOME!!!' thats what this album was like.

my favorite songs are probably ex nihlio, elegy and the epigone. trivial paradoxym is a really weird and heavy song that just seems to go all over the place, and one man parade is an awesome straight forward rocker. the second half of elegy is just beautiful with the piano to guitar to the brutal end. they are coming out with a new album in may, looking forward to it.

its kind of hard to put these guys into a catagory. they dont really sound like anyone else. but its kind of progressive sounding like opeth and at times melodic like dark tranquility.

Yes this is a christian band. their lyricals are very meaningful and touching, so if you are a devout christian that happens to like metal this is a great band for you. and if your not christian, they still are a unique and talented band that deserves to be heard.

If you like Unloco like I do then cheack out the lead singer's(Joey Duenas) new band A new Revolution...cheack out their myspace..(www.myspace.com/anewrevolution)

4 out of 5 stars Unloco rule, eventhough they've kinda sold out and split up.......2005-06-16

This album is a really great album. I think in this album, Unlocos efforts can really be seen. Unfortunately, Unloco, never really made a great sucess of themselves, and as many other reviewers/fans have said, they can't see why Unloco were never a big sucess. However, now, no-one will ever know, as they split up a while back, but, despite them splitting up, they have recorded an amazing album, that amazing album, being Becoming I.

I'd listened to this album on amazon a few times, before eventually deciding to buy it, and I have to say that, I wasn't disappointed atall!! I think it's an amazing album. Unloco are quite different, they're not too heavy, but they're not exactly like Simple Plan or New found Glory, I think they're inbetween, perhaps alternative rock, not that everything has to be in a genre, but I know that some people criticized Unloco for not being true metal or whatever, but I don't think it really matters too much what genre they are, it doesn't hide the fact that the music on this album is really good.

The music is amazing, and all of the instruments fit in so well with the lead singers singing.

My favourite tracks on the album are as follows:

Crashing-this is an amazing first song on the album, it really sets the tone for whats to come! I think this is one of the best songs.
Failure-this is a very good song. Not one of my favourites though
Hands and Knees-tackles bad relationships with parents, how many of us have experienced that I wonder. Good song.
Drowning in it-I love this song and have to say, this has to be one of the best songs on the album.
Empty-Again, another very good song. Another favourite of mine
:-)
Bruises-I love this song, although some people find it abit annoying.
Watching me slip, Becoming I and Fold are 3 more of the best on the album, each are absaloutely amazing, Watching me slip is more of a slow/sad song, Becoming I,starts off slow but the guitars are amazing, and the chorus becomes a little heavier and Fold, that's kick ass from start to finish.
Texas0 is the last song on the album, which is also a very very good song. It's similar to Watching me slip in the way that it's a slower and sadder song with very meaningful lyrics, and the lead singers voice sounds so nice!!! lol......ok, so what I'm trying to say is Unloco are a very talented and underrated band so if you're looking for a band to listen to, check Unloco out.

Also check out The Blank Theory, they're quite similar to Unloco and are cool as well :-)

5 out of 5 stars 2nd best bend on MAAW 2 tour.......2004-11-25

Unloco is a great band with great music and great lyrics. They were the second best band on the music as a weapon tour 2 behind the great Disturbed. If you like Disturbed you will like Unloco for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely underrated album.......2004-08-15

I don't know what happened to thses guys lately...their site has not been updated in a while and I haven';t heard any news about them but if they make a new album I will be one of the first to buy it. This album is one of the greatest things I've ever heard.

1. Crashing (10/10) Simply awesome.
2. Failure (7/10) Really good song but loses its intensity after a few plays.
3. Hands and Knees (8/10) Another good song using their hard and melodic style.
4. Empty (10/10) BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM BY FAR. THIS SONG IS SO GOOD YOU CAN JUST GET CHILLS LISTENING TO IT. IF YOU ARE GOING TO LISTEN TO ANY OF THEIR SONGS LET THIS BE IT.
5. Bruises (5/10) Different style compared to their other songs I don't personally like it.
6. Drowning In It (6/10) Pretty good song but nothing too special.
7. Watching Me Slip (7/10) Acoustic song - still a great song.
8. Becoming I (9/10) Not as hard as the others but the melody is just so good.
9. Fold (10/10) Such a great song another one that you can feel.
10. Neurotic (9/10) Insane intro and stays good throughout the whole song.
11. Making Me Hate You (7/10)- Awesome guitar and pretty good chorus.
12. Texas (10/10) ANother acoustic mellow song but its great.

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-06-28

This is a great CD. All of the songs are very good. Good vocals and good music in the backround. Nice lyrics, too. If you like alternative rock, buy this CD!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hardly a Cliche..........2007-04-16

Funny, but while much electronic and dub music certainly can become cliche, Adrian Sherwood has managed throughout his career to take both genres in very new directions. The present release is no exception. For those less than impressed with his first solo outing "Never Trust a Hippy" (which took a while to grow on me), "Becoming a Cliche" delivers immediately and magnificiently. The bass lines are more pronounced, with each song delivering a whopping hook carried throughout each track, layered with samples, amazing beats, and trippy keyboards. The addition of vocals is also a plus, with a restrained Lee Perry opening the disc. And for those familiar with the realworld label, there's plenty of world music added to the mix to make this a perfect fit for the catalog. Disc 2 features dub versions (variations, really) of disc 1, plus some extra features. Defintely worth it. For fans of ON-U-Sound or realworld, this disc is a must.

...A piece on the earth...
Sherwood's music identifies itself as the geometric chaos.. So fractal.. So continues... The tracks are arranged in a circular way so that it keeps looping forever as far as your whirling sound system accepts digital muses!
Praising the CD will definitely make it sound as a commercial piece of art while its in reality a work of maturity and innovation regarding the techniques and the musical philosophy involved ...Becoming a Cliché is standing alone surrounded with many other Dub dreams...I can say that the feelings which are "secreted"! while listening are the same as the light reflected inside a falling water drop.. Towards a running blue...blue...river..

Though it's based on the 1978 X-rated movie of the same name, Debbie Does Dallas may be one of the most wholesome pieces of entertainment to ever hit Off Broadway. Played by Sherie Rene Scott (Aida), the title character has to do unsavory things in order to raise money and travel to Dallas, where she'll fulfill her destiny as a Texas Cowgirl cheerleader. But as "Where I Need to Go (Debbie's Theme)" makes clear (it's influenced by "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic), this musical actually fits comfortably in the mainstream, emphasizing such classic American values as following your dream and using a bloated ballad to get there. But "Where I Need to Go" is one of only a few songs on this cast recording. The CD is more akin to a book on tape, relying heavily on the play's dialogues to fill the track listing. It might be fun to listen to it on a long cross-country drive, but in the comfort of your home, the appeal fades somewhat. If you're looking for songs that explore the world of adult entertainment, the soundtrack to Bruce Kimmel's 1976 movie, The First Nudie Musical, remains the one to top. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars This is utterly Precious!.......2003-05-25

I bought this because I enjoy Sherie Renee Scott's performances in "Aida" and "The Last Five Years." This is one of the funniest recordings I've heard. Don't be mislead, I think this could hardly be considered a musical, aside from the few songs that are actually sung, I would think of it more as a play with music - and the occasional sung song. This is part of the charm, however. The cliche cheerleaders and football players are hillarious to listen to. Be advised, it is based on a porn movie, so there is a lot of things that could make it uncomfortable to listen to in mixed company, but it's humor and naive charm, make it worth while.

3 out of 5 stars Not many songs but still funny........2003-03-23

Majority of the songs have no actual substance, but besides the few gorgeous melodies Sherie Rene Scott sings with such oomph, this cd is jampacked with dirty jokes and nothing but. ...

5 out of 5 stars A Rolling Ride - Tongue in Cheek - Visual INTENDED!!!.......2003-01-30

This recording is fantastic. I've a collection of over 300 Theatre Cast Albums. And this, by far, is very original. Definitly not something for children, while not explicit, the references to sexual acts are pretty thinly veiled.
There are a total of maybe 4 actual songs on here. But, the spoken word is fantastic, and the visuals you create with your mind are even more amusing.
The girls, which are totally believable as a group of not too bright, but sexually charges adolescents speak in a group voice, with a Valley accent, that's just too funny. You can't help but laugh.
And the men, which are never the focus in the type of movie this is based on, come through as unimportant bystanders that just help to move the action along, but still show some small glimmers of personality that make you laugh at the genre of adult movies.
All in all, this CD is a humurous romp through the sexual discovery of an 18 year old girl pursuing her dreams. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys hearing something new, different, and that will certainly make you SMILE, if not LAUGH OUT LOUD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very Funny and totally original.......2003-01-16

I saw the show and loved it but I couldn't imagine how they were going to turn it into a CD because there isn't enough music to make a full CD. So what they did was to create a very very funny comedy album full of scenes, songs, sex and karaoke (if you can believe it) The CD is 74 minutes and is a complete listening experience. There is also a surprise bonus track called The orgasm medley that has to be heard to be believed. It is hilarious. The songs are better on the CD than in the show. They have a South Park feel to them and they are very funny. Sherie Rene Scott has one of my favorite voices anywhere and she gets the opportunity to show off all she can do and she does it great. I would reccomend anyone getting this CD if you want to giggle and blush and have a really great time. Oh, and the artwork has a centerfold of Sherie as Debbie it is worth the price of the CD (if you know what I mean)

While there is not much good new music out now, I'm still jamming. I have grown a better appreciation for "Closer Than Close" by Rosie Gaines. Some people might remember her from Prince & the New Power Generation where she sang vocals on songs such as "Diamonds & Pearls", "Get Off", and "Cream". While a house remix of the title track was popular in Baltimore, the only single/video from the album was for "I Want U (Inner City Blue)" (Earth Mama Version) - one of my favorite songs, ever (it plays in my head every time I like someone); the airplay may have been limited to only once on BET's "Video Soul". While I always liked the nearly a cappella ballad "I Almost Lost You", I now dig the other songs (13 in total, including a second version of "I Want U"), particularly "Slowman", "Get the Ghetto Off Your Mind", "Googaga" (aka "Making it up as we go along"), "Are You Ready", "Can You Handle It", and her two Bob Marley covers: her re-make of "Turn Your Lights Down Low" and her 7+ minute re-take on "Concrete Jungle". The album was completed and ready for release just around the time Prince started beefing with Warner Brothers Music - that was problematic for Rosie Gaines because her album was slated to be released on Prince's Paisley Park label, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers which was dissolved shortly before the scheduled release date (around the time when Prince started insisting on being known by a symbol). In 1995 Closer Than Close was released on Motown Records, but was insufficiently promoted. Sadly, Ms. Gaines never had another major-label US release and Closer Than Close is out-of-print. But I can say this album, which I rated as only average when I first got it for my birthday 10 years & some months ago, has really grown on Me. I don't think the album was so much ahead of it's time as it was ahead of my time. I think it took this long for Me to "get it" because it is grown-folks' music.

      1 out of 5 stars Rosie Disappoints.......2002-04-24

I must admit I was expecting a lot from this album. After hearing Rosie sing a couple of songs on previous Prince products, I was expecting something spectacular from this album. However, I avoided purchasing this CD for years until recently when I found it in one of my favorite record stores brand new for [the price]. I figured, "What the hell. It's Rosie Gaines. This has got to be a good CD." Man, was I wrong!

First of all, Rosie's vocals are very subdued on most of the cuts and the material she is working with is very mediocre and dull. I was very bored and disappointed with this Cd. If you are looking for the Rosie who sang on "Diamonds and Pearls" or "Nothing Compares 2 U", this is not the CD to purchase. I'm getting rid of my copy as soon a possible. No wonder Motown dumped her shortly after this CD was originally released.

      5 out of 5 stars a lost gem.......2001-05-09

I discovered Rosie Gaines after hearing her amazing vocals on her UK club hit, "I Surrender". Her power house voice turned what would have been a bland, standard dance-pop song with any other singer into a soulful club anthem. That song, however, is not on this album. After hearing her amazing voice, I set out to find more information on her. I found out that she was a protege of Prince ( i shouldn't need to explain who he is :). The only songs I could find of hers were ones she did with Prince and a couple of other club songs in the "i surrender" vein. I found out she had released this album back in 1995 on Motown, but it was long out of print. Luckily, I managed to obtain a copy of "Closer Than Close" from ebay and here I am. I was initally expecting a dance album, but what I got was far from that. What "Closer Than Close" is, for the most part, is a simple soul record. While modern day R&B singers become lost among the heavy drum beats, samples, and countless backup singers, Rosie went for a more organic apporach, meaning that the main instruments used in this album are a set of REAL drums, pianos and guitars. Rosie's voice is given plenty of room, which is always a good thing. No need for an overwhelming number of backup singers here. The album starts off with "I Want U", which was co-penned by the purple one himself. It's a very upbeat number, and even though it's over 6 and a half minutes long, it isn't tedious, and is a good opener for the album. Most of the songs here do stretch past the 5 minute mark, but, instead of being repetitve like most long songs are, Rosie keeps all the tracks floating along very well. The original version of "Closer Than Close" sounds kind of odd after hearing the club version, but after a couple of listens, the relaxed stylings of the original version are much more welcome than the pounding dance beat of the club mix. Another great track to mention is "Concrete Jungle", which sounds kind of spooky with its intro of police sirens and gun shots. The only thing I would've liked to be changed with this album is there be a couple more fast-paced songs added. However, Rosie shines on this album, as a vocalist, and intstrumentalist (she performed most of the music on this album, according to the liner notes)..... All in all, if you want to hear some REAL R&B/soul music without all the modern day gadgetry... this is for you.....

      3 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2000-12-27

Rosie Gaines is a talented artist. She brought her vocal style unto Prince&created a spark.this album has some solid moments but it doesn't hold up all the way through.when She hits the groove she is tight.better material overall would have highlighted Her better. She deserved to be heard in her full essence.

5 out of 5 stars Rashida from the boogie down bronx.......2000-11-15

I purchase this album when it was released back in 95, and I still listen to it over and over again. I was very upset that her record company didn't not promote this album. the album has a very mature grown up sound. but i guess in a world of one hit wonders true music never gets it's due.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Sampler, and the Best Place to Start.......2006-01-24

If you're unfamiliar with Nyman and want a broad overview of his best work, I'd start here. I actually WORE OUT a copy of this and recently bought another. When it arrived, I played it over and over-- Nyman's almost creepily insistent and precise compositions will appeal to those who appreciate minimalism and repetition in the music of other composers such as John Adams, Steve Reich, Michael Torke, and Philip Glass.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Nyman RULES !.......2004-07-22

I thought there was nothing beyond Philip Glass, Steve Reich or John Adams. Suddenly, for some strange reason I bought this CD. It far exceeded my expectations.

Nyman is a excelent composer, his music is fast-paced, joyful and delicious.

I recomend this CD for anyone who is looking for a great minimalist composer.

      5 out of 5 stars Sensations mosaic.......2004-03-31

Today I was talking with a friend about the rainbow of feelings "Memorial" awakes in my mind. I consider this song like the exact opposite of easy-listening music, a feeling catalyst, a vehicle that can raise you to the sky and gradually take you to the deepest level in hell. As derrotista said, it is perfect to describe the meaning of a word like "death", but more than that, with an inevitability emphasis.

The rest of the compilation also honors the meaning of intensity. No one song in this disc will let your attention go away from the sensations mosaic this record constructs. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good start to meet Nyman.......2004-03-05

I was a great enthusiast of new age and minimalist music in the early 90's, when I was still a teenager. I had this as one of my favourite albums and today I consider it one of my best purchases.

Ten years later, Nyman is recognised as one of the biggest composers of late XXth century. In part with the astonishing soundtrack of "The Piano". But I think this "Essential" album has more to offer to you.

Of course, my favourite is "Memorial". It is the most tragic music I have ever listened. It's a perfect track to describe what a word like "death" can mean. "Miserere Paraphrase" is the definition of another simple word: "pain".

Some other tracks are the purity of minimalism: "Knowing the Ropes", "Chasing Sheep is best left to Shepherds", "Wheelbarrow Walk" and "The Garden is Becoming a Robe Room" are of my favourites.

Why am I not giving it five stars? The reason: "Prospero's Books: Miranda". It is a bad way to end this album. Almost the whole album is devoted to Greenaway films: "The Draughtsman Contract", "The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover", "A Zed and Two Noughts" and "Drowning by Numbers" and the referred "Prospero's Books". The only track not belonging to a film is Stroking-Synchronising, from "Water Dances" album. This is a tremendous composition and should be the great finale for this album. "Miranda" is a dull and not creative composition, which Nyman doesn't have to be proud of it: it is too complex, too changing and breaks with the minimalist spirit. I also think the soprano and the mezzo don't play a "serious" part.

But of course, it has an honour place in my discography.

      2 out of 5 stars The Emperor's New Music.......2002-04-11

A lot of people seem to love this guy and I just don't see why. I find it dull, intellectual (in the most pejorative sense) and defines what's wrong with a lot of "post-modernism" in music today. This guy doesn't write tunes as much as he writes concepts of tunes. The music fails to connect on an emotional level and fails to be interesting enough in purely intellectual terms to compensate for it's emotional hollowness. His craft seems a bit lacking too- filled with the trappings of minimalism without the basic musical values such as memorable melodies, logical harmony and innovative form that make a composer such as John Adams worth listening to. His often odd choices of orchestration tend to strike one as merely grotesque rather than imaginative. I'm afraid that Michael Nyman is a musical poseur and it's a shame that so many people have bought into his brand of soulless artifice.
      Not recommended.
