Album Description
Astounding Eddie Hazel-dominated Funkadelic album (from 1973), remastered for the first time in 15 years from the original master tapes. This is probably the tightest and most accessible of Funkadelic's Westbound albums, featuring track after track of incredible music. The CD includes the original seven track album plus the sharp-as-tacks edit of the title track, released as a single, and the wonderful guitar duel of "Vital Juices", which was the B-side and continuation of "Red Hot Momma". In-depth sleeve notes from funk expert and series consultant Dean Rudland, including details of the band's history and the recording of this album. Full color booklet, which reproduces the classic sleeve art by Pedro Bell, as well as contemporary memorabilia, ads and photos. Westbound U.S.
Customer Reviews:
Good times funk album........2007-05-16
"Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" is one of the best songs I've ever heard. This album is a great feel-good funk album with lots of funny improvs and great songs.
CAUTION! Truncated versions of some tracks.......2006-03-06
Note that this reissue has shorter versions of at least two key tracks. Both "I'll Stay" and "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" are each cut short by about three minutes. It's a real bummer for the serious P-funk fan... While the sound on this reissue is cleaner, the EQ seems soft and lacks the strong 'punch' of the previous issue of this title. I am unsure if this is a result of too much high end, not enough bass, or what... While the artwork is an improvement, the bonus tracks do not offer anything that was not already available on Music For My Mother.
This is an awsome album - however I cannot recomend this version... Seek out the previous issue. On Amazon this older listing does not include 'remastered' in the title (however the sound is great).
Great CD, One Major Screwup.......2005-12-12
Funkadelic is certainly an underrated band-And not only in the R&B world, but in the rock world as well. Regardless of the name of the band and the fact that you usually find them in the R&B or Soul section of the store, Funkadelic is actually a rock band, especially the early to mid-70s albums like this. You get some pretty rocking songs, guitar solos and even a tad of progressive rock. They easily earn a spot along side of any classic rock band from the 70s. Of course it's funky as well! Don't buy a Funkadelic album thinking it's gonna sound like the theme music to Shaft, but it's definitely got a groove to it. It's great to see these cds finally getting the remaster treatment coz some of the original cds sounded pretty bad. This particular album is excellent and a great intro to the band, unless of course you want the more dancey sound, then I'd suggest One Nation Under A Groove or Uncle Jam Wants You. I must give a warning to anyone who wants to ditch their original cd copy for the new remaster. Yes, it does sound better and there are a few bonus songs, but I was very disappointed when it got to track 3(I'll Stay) and the song ended halfway through! I remember this song being at least 3 minutes longer. This really bummed me out coz the whole song is good. Imagine listening to Time from The Dark Side Of The Moon and having it fade out halfway through. There is really no reason for this, it's totally unacceptable, and that is why I give this 4 stars and not 5. It is a 5 star album all the way for sure. Those not familar with the album won't be aware of anything, but fans will be like, "What the hell?". I mean, it's not like there isn't enough space on the cd, it's a 37 minute album to begin with. With minor edits(including the last song too actually) and two bonus tracks, it's now 38 minutes!! So you may not want to toss your old cd if you want to keep the entire song. Still a great album though.

Funk that Rocks! A P-Funk Masterpiece (WARNING: BAD JOKES ABOUT ALBUM TITLES CONTAINED HEREIN).......2007-06-22
This is my favorite Funkadelic album. Yes, it's better than Maggot Brain and One Nation Under a Groove. It's just that good!
Okay, so the guitar-heavy funk with socially conscience lyrics that was Cosmic Slop was a good album, but failed to get George anywhere commercially. So he dropped the meaningful lyrics and instead focused on rockin' hard. Eddie Hazel dominates the album, playing guitar on and cowriting each song. That's good. Very, very good.
Things start off with a blast: the headbanger Red Hot Mama. It's one of the album's very best songs. My only complaint is that the b-side Vital Juices (which continues the guitar solo) was left off the original album and only released as a bonus track. The next song, Alice in My Fantasies, is a warped, funny take on hard-rock. Next up is a personal favorite of mine. I'll Stay is a trippy, intricate, sexy slow jam with a descending bass hook that grabs me. Whenever I hear it, I drop everything and just let it play. Jarring you out of this is yet another funk-metal classic, the title track - which is, unsurprisingly, yet another of my favorites. Actually, every song here is a favorite. What are you gonna do? The percussive Sexy Ways isn't as good as the previous two, no. I stress "not AS good" because I like it much. 'specially the vocals and the percussionn. Jimmy's Got a Bit of B*tch in him is a total change of pace. This is a lighthearted jazzy sing-along about a gay friend. And it's not homophobic. It gets brownie points. So why frown? Because even the sun go down. We'll call it mixed emotions for now. Play on, Jimmy!
Then... ah, yes, ladies and gentlemen, Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts. Begins with Eddie Hazel's transcendent guitar solo, ends up as basso-profundo wisdom attained from medtating under the bo tree. Soothing, feel good song. What a way to close the album!
Favorite Funkadelic, easily. Others to get? Glad you asked. (WARNING: BAD PUNS AHEAD) Free Your Mind and Hugh Jazz Will Follow, Maggot Drain, Inflation Under a Groove and Uncle Spam Wants You. See? I told you those were awful puns. But what are you gonna do?
Galactic Classic For The Cosmic Ages.......2006-10-09
This album stands out among the works of George Clinton and Funkadelic. There are few albums that could define the funk movement so well as this. There are so many facets here, some tracks are classy little funk jams while others are philosophical labyrinthes. Track after track, this album will hold your attention and bring you into the cosmic folds of the Mothership. It's fun, sexy, profound and beautiful. "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On" will transport you to another time or another you.
Still Da' Funk!.......2006-03-21
I first heard this joint in summer '74 and it is still innovative, funky, and relevant. Eddie Hazel, one of the greatest and most underrated guitarist ever, tears it up throughout.
My favorite Funkadelic album, It rocks form start to finish.......2006-02-15
Eddie Hazel who only played on "Cosmic Slop and Let's Make It last the on the previous release "Cosmic Slop',comes back after doing a year in jail for slapping a stewardess, and records the most hard- rock- punk -funk joint in the P- Funk catelouge. While Funkadelic had techincally better guitar players, no one played with Hazel's verstility, guile, and creativity. From the opening hard - rock number "Red Hot Mama" with Bernie Worrell's keyboard fills ala "I bet you" to the MC5- Stooges- like "Alice In My Fantasies" Hazel brings the noize on this proto - punk - rock jam with tasteful solos and slamming rhythm guitar and lead vocals by "Garry Shider" then the mob slows down for the classic soul of "I'll Stay" I can only say so much about an album that should be played on every classic rock and classic soul stations about an album that has influenced two generations of musicians in all genres. And check out Sir LLeb (Pedro Bell) artwork and commentary I wish that Westbound would release the artwork inside the CD packaging to show the world that Funkadelic was the total package looks, sound, and art.
1. Red Hot Mama - Funk- Rock jam 10/10
2. Alice in My Fantasies - Proto - Punk-Rock Jam 10/10
3. I'll Stay - nice soulfull number 9/10
4. Sexy Ways - Nice harmonizing by the Parliaments 10/10
5. Standing on the Verge - Great guitar, led vocal by Fuzzy Haskins 10/10
6. Jimmy's got a lil bit of Bitch In Him - A nice jazzy soul number about homosexuality 8/10
7. Good Thoughts, Bad, Thoughts - Great guitar work by Eddie Hazel and nice rap by George Clinton.
37 minutes of Punk- Funk - Bliss
so why frown?? =(.......2005-09-30
"Red Hot Mama" alone is worth the price of this funky tripped out gem of a CD from the P-Funk. Eddie Hazel positively smokes throughout. Watch out for ol' Jimmy....
