Arriving as it did in 1990, before nostalgia for '70s dance music turned from irony to genuine appreciation, Lisa Stansfield's Affection was ahead of its time. Featuring up-to-date clubland rhythms percolating under sweeping string arrangements a la Barry White and classic Philly soul, Stansfield's music struck the perfect balance between looking forward and looking back. "All Around the World" was justifiably the album's smash hit, but more than a few of the other tracks--"This Is the Right Time," "Live Together," and "Poison" among them--are its equal. And it's easy to get lost in Stansfield's supple, soulful voice, which leads the way in making Affection a far more memorable affair than the usual dance trifle. --Daniel Durchholz

Timeless Soul.......2007-06-15
A well-crafted homage to the Philadelphia soul tradition, Lisa Stansfield's "Affection" was a refreshing change of pace in 1990. "All Around the World" and "This Is the Right Time" were international hits, yet the stellar track remains "The Love in Me" (featuring an impressive horn section). Stansfield also delivers the vocal goods with "Mighty Love," "You Can't Deny It" and "When Are You Coming Back?" This smashing debut represents her best album to date.
Been around the world... and still going strong in 2007 !.......2007-05-02
Just got a replacement cd of my favorite lisa stansfield album..."Affection" is one of those rare gems..that comes around every once in a while. when this came out in 1990 i was in my junior year in high school..and this album brings back fun memories.. if this was released in 2007 it would still be a smash hit !
Lisa stansfield is a class act. her soulful, seductive voice will warm your heart. her ballads are incredible..and her dance tracks are pure gold..she ranks right up there with paula abdul and madonna.
this album, is well produced from start to finish...no filler tracks here..every song here is special ..for me my favorites are " around the world","this is the right time" "What did i do to you" and the sultry "affection"
its no wonder she was seriously being considered by tim burton to play Catwoman when they were casting for Batman returns in 1990 she has that hypnotic beauty i think she would have nailed it...
in this day of cookie cutter/mass produced wannabe stars like brittany spears etc.. they cant compare to the vocals of the lovely ms stansfield.. this cd sounds fresh as the day it hit the racks..do yourself a favor check out this cd or any of her other albums you'll be glad you did...and use the brittany and lindsay cds as coasters...
LISA STANSFIELD.......2006-11-03
BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS ITEM, AND FOUND IT ON AMAZON! GREAT BUY, GOOD, AND I AM ENJOYING THE CD.
Still Impressive To This Day!.......2006-09-09
This is the album that proved to the world (as well as Black folks everywhere) that Teena Marie isn't the only white girl with soul. Proclaiming Barry White as her primary influence, Lisa Stansfield was an overnight sensation with the release of Affection. Although not solid all the way through, it's still worthy of being picked up the next time you see it in the used bin if you never bought the album. Affection had a soulful dance groove that can heard in a lot of other music by the likes of the Brand New Heavies and Soul II Soul. Classic cuts like the infectious singles "All Around The World," "You Can't Deny It," and "This Is The Right Time" will definitely have you reverting back to the easy-going times of the early 90s. And even though "All Woman" was a huge single on her follow-up album, Affection still stands the test of time as being the standout album of Lisa Stansfield's career.
The Best Of 80's.......2006-03-15
This was one of Lisa's best cd's, makes you miss the 80's.

Don't think twice... buy this one!.......2005-12-01
Beautifully written and sung by Joan, this CD is a must for JA fans. If you only buy one of her CD's, get this as it has all of her early classics. I am such a fan that I have recently gone and bought six more of her cd's... many songs I already have from this "Love and Affection" cd but her songs that did not make the classic cut are just as great to me.
..with a lover, i can really laugh, really laugh..i can really move..........2005-08-16
I don't know what it is about her songs that have such an affect (or, is it effect?...geez) on me. It's music that makes me feel, think, love. It's what it means to be a woman, to be a lover, to be whoever you are in this world. It's what music should be.
I own all the CDs. All of them. This is my favorite compilation. It's the music I listen to when I paint. It's one of those CDs that you lend to a potential bf; and if he says it's "okay," he loses his potential.
If you already love Joan, you have to have this. If you've never really heard her music and stumbled onto this page, you'll find something unique and from the soul in this music. Give it a try.
Great But One Glaring Omission.......2004-06-28
There's nothing much I can say about Joan that other reviewers have already said....but, I was very upset they didn't include one of her best songs, "Temptation." How could they possibly leave this song off of this collection? Now I have to buy the single CD collection just to get that song! Gggrrrrr.
No "What Do Boys Dream?".......2004-04-26
A great pair of CDs with one glaring problem: Track 20 on CD #2 is supposed to be "What Do Boys Dream?" but is instead "Tell Tale", which is a decent song, but not as good as the one it replaced. What went wrong?
Many lows but lots of compensatory highs.......2003-06-19
I don't know how I got into JA's music. I think I read a review of a concert she gave in Dallas back in 1995, and in the body of the review the writer listed some of Joan's song titles, and the titles, themselves, intrigued me. I went out and bought her then new CD, The Shouting Stage, and thought it was really horrible. Fast forward to last year when I somewhat capriciously decided to pick up her one disc greatest hits CD. I instantly fell in love with how unique some of the songs such as Cool Blue Stole My Heart, Heaven, and Love and Affection were. This 2 CD set has a lot of songs devoid of any hooks or brilliant lyrics (Simon, How Cruel, Temptation) but it has a lot of great songs that are exclusive to this CD. The track "I Must Be Going" is the most brilliant track I have ever heard and only available on CD format here....

Awesome Album.......2006-08-12
This is a wonderful CD for anyone who loves Jesus and great music. The band members are wonderful people who seek only to glorify their Savior, and they definitely do in this album. I wish I owned it myself, but I had to settle for a copy(with approval by the band members, of course). It includes the chords for those who wish to play these songs themselves. Highly recommended also are:Overwhelmed,8 seconds on a holy cow, Everybodyduck, and Still Know How to Groove. What a blessing this CD has been to me! will amke you think real hard!

This is a keeper!.......2007-05-03
I can't believe that i slept on this cd title. I've been a fan of Jody Watley since the Shalamar days. This may well be her best recording. I definitely rank it in the top three. Pretty much every song on here is slammin' from beginning to end. The saxophone and the bass guitars on some of these tracks are off the chain. The remix to "Looking for a new love" is the bomb as well. Much love to this sista'.
I'm not suprised.......2005-08-05
This cd is very good! I'm glad she is still doing her thing! I love the title track that is why I bought the album. But this cd is very good! I like "Pride & Joy" and "Stay."
Jody is still busy as ever check her out on her website. She is working on a remix album.
YOU HAVE GOT TO GET THIS !!!.......2002-07-13
I WAS VERY SURPRISED AT HOW FABULOUS THIS CD IS. EVERY TRACKS IS A WINNER. HER VOICE HAS MATURED AND SO HAS HER MATERIAL. SMOOTH R&B AND SOME UP-TEMPO SONGS,IT'S SO BEUATFUL. The last track makes it worth.......2002-04-10
This not La Watley's best album. It sounds good, her voice is as velvety as ever, but the whole thing ends up as kind of lame.
The jazzy live version of Looking for a new love (Jody's 80s mega hit) makes the CD worth buying though. It's smooth, sexy and fun.
If you want something done right............2001-11-03
Her own style, her own music, and her own record label.. thats the only way to get things done!! This is Jody Watley the way she was meant to be. "Affection" is one of her strongest discs in years.. you can play this from start to finish. Get it while you can!

Customer Reviews:
Sometimes you get what you wish for........2005-03-29
Sometimes it's frustrating be a music lover who is gay. You're expected to dig the club culture that produces such drab music and makes an icon out of Gwen Stefani and her crappy solo CD. Secretly, in your disc collection, you're listening to everything BUT dance albums, and the entire library of Luka Bloom rests comfortably next to the Blue Oyster Cult. Every so often, you really wish that a certain song was a little less straight and a little more twisted.
Mark Weigle understands this. Although you won't find any B.O.C. covers here, 14 of "Different and The Same's" 15 tracks are from other artists and are given a serious queer bent. Everyone from Trisha Yearwood ("What I Like About You") to Tommy Tutone get twiddles from Weigle's country folk sensibilities. A few of the songs here make perfect sense in this format, like Rosanne Cash's "The Truth About You," which becomes more about the struggle with the closet than the secreting of an affair. Of equal note is Pete Townsend's "And I Moved," which is suddenly transformed into a song about a slow, burning, longing and the encounter that the longing leads up to.
There are also a couple of fun moments here. Retooling the Jackson 5's "ABC" into "AZT" is good for a couple of chuckles. Better still is a radio worthy rip through Tommy Tutone's "867-5309/Jimmy" (originally Jenny). After all, the number on the men's room wall was more likely written there by a man, no? It's this kind of spin that makes Weigle and "Different and The Same" such a treat. He's also a delight live, and worth catching if he's playing a pride-fest in your town. With any luck, his well honed musical skills will help him get heard in a broader context.

rarely heard music.......2007-01-07
Good on you Bostridge! These BRitten songs are fabulous - didn't even know that some of them even existed! JOhnson's playing makes for a perfect duo with Bostridge's intelligent interpretations of these brilliant songs.
A voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-02-07
Oh Hearken all ye true lovers of GOOD MUSIC for this album presents some of the most profoundly beautiful songs you will ever hear anywhere!!!It would be worthwhile even if you only enjoyed the first 3 songs on the disc: the 3 Realizations from Harmonia Sacra which are 'Lord! I have sinned','Hymn to God the Father' by Pelham Humfreys and 'A Hymn on Divine Music' (which is absolutely so meaningful to us who love the art of music) by William Croft all arranged by Britten for tenor and harp. And all sung by one of the most exquisitely beautiful tenor voices ever to come out of the UK; flawless diction, resonant and vibrant tone quality and highly emotional portraying every little nuance in the song.
I bought this album because the music of Britten has always intrigued me and I was not disappointed in the variety of songs included on this album. The nine Holy Sonnets of John Donne are profound religious meditations, all of which are concerned with death and repentance. The songs 'Evening','Morning', and 'Night', are taken from the incidental music for Ronald Duncan's Masque 'This Way to the Tomb'.There are songs with settings of W.H. Auden, and several other writers too numerous to mention, but suffice it to say that there is sufficient variety to keep all listeners interested throughout the disc. Some of the songs I found particularly interesting are:'The Red Cockatoo',Waley-'A Poison Tree',Blake-'Cradle Song for Eleanor',MacNeice-and 'Death be not Proud'. When you have an Ian Bostridge available there is no need to look for anyone else. He has all the vocal skills and nuances to sing each song as an island in itself; simply marvelous interpretations, and he is fortunate to have Graham Johnson to accompany him.
Good, but could be much better..........2004-11-02
While I do like some of what Bostridge does, his recorded performances to me seem to be filled more and more with musical gimmicks. His tone I find refreshing from so many English tenors who sound like they are in pain while singing, but Brostridge truly does lack a good legato line and he often uses a horrible strident quality for emphisis of text.
Peter Pears' recordings of many of these songs are still in many ways the difinitive performances, but I do like to hear other voices sing this repertoire and unfortunately very few options are out there. So, kudos to Bostridge for recording these songs, but lets not crown him THE new Britten singer of our time.
THE English Singer sings music by THE English Songwriter.......2000-02-29
This CD lets us know that not only was Britten the greatest of English composers since Purcell, but he is an absolute master at songwriting. His economic style is perfect for songs, his choice of text is truly sophisticated and his idiomatic writing for both piano and voice put the listener always on the edge of his or her seat. Bostridge's light but powerful voice suits these songs perfectly. And Graham Johnson's piano playing is unsurpassable. One of my favorite CDs!

You can listen to this any time!.......2001-06-07
Nice new sound, each song takes you to a new place. For those who love the clarity and beauty of solo piano. Paul does a great job at not sounding as if he has been listening too much to others music. His sound is his own. Its great!
As surprised as Kevin kern's music.......2000-09-23
I heard thousands of New age music. And many of them are piano solo. Most of them let me disppointed. But the piano music of Paul Cardall and Kevin Kern are the Best piano mucic ON THE WORLD !!! You will be never regretted to buy it. Listen to it more than twice times, then you will find your emotion for music !
Paul's Music - A True "Sign of Affection".......2000-09-09
I first heard Paul's music when one of his CD's was being played in a book store and immediately fell in love with the magic of his music. "Sign of Affection" has become one of my favorite CD's. There is such a sweet peace transmitted through Paul's music, even though one feels a tinge of sadness when listening to "Dave's Farewell." But the music also implants a feeling of hope and deep joy that touches the heart, as obviously Paul plays from the heart. I highly recommend this CD - not only to those who have felt sadness or lost a loved one, but anyone who wants to feel that "quiet peace that stirs the soul."

Customer Reviews:
George Fenton is the master of subtle emotion!.......2000-07-06
the object of my affection is a movie that needed a composer to be sesititve to what was happening on screne. George was that man. he brought his gentle but genesis touch to a film full of emotions. The main title brings out the love and simpicity of the story. "out to work" brought out the quick wite and connection between a gay man and a straight woman. Overall, it is a wonderful score they got the right man to do the job. George Fenton is the best. He was the only man who could have given life to the unspoken emotions happening on screne. If you are wondering were he came from some of his other scores include Shadowlands, Ever After, and Anna and the king(with Jodie Foster). George you are a magnificent composer!

Album Description
Ernst Bacon was one of that pioneering generation of composers, along with Thomson, Copland, Harris and others, who found a voice for American music. Born in Chicago on May 26, 1898, his Austrian mother gave him a love of song and an early start on the piano. Although his varied career included appearances as pianist and conductor, along with teaching and directing positions, his deepest preoccupation was always composing. His musical awards included a Pulitzer Fellowship in 1932 for his Symphony in D Minor and three Guggenheim Fellowships.
As a composer, Bacon belonged to no school and followed no fads. He was largely self-taught in composition, except for two years study with Karl Weigl in Vienna in the early '20s. While there, he experienced the depression of post-war Europe first hand and concluded that the European avant-garde movement, reflecting the pessimism of that era and region, was not appropriate to America. Returning to Chicago, he set out to write music that expressed the vitality and affirmation of our own country.
At the age of nineteen, while majoring in mathematics at Northwestern University, Bacon wrote a complex treatise exploring all possible harmonies, which was published by The Open Court Publishing Company (Our Musical Idiom, The Monist, October 1917). However, when he began to compose music in his twenties, he rejected a cerebral approach, taking the position that music is an art, not a science. He felt that its source should be intuitive and imaginative, rather than abstract and analytical.
From his first job as opera coach at the Eastman School in the mid '20s, he went on to receive a master's degree from the University of California at Berkeley and to teach at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under Ernest Bloch. During
the '30s he was director of the WPA Federal Music Project and Orchestra in San Francisco and was a founder of the Carmel Bach Festival. From 1938 to 1945 he headed the School of Music at Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he established the New Spartanburg Music Festival. At Syracuse University, he was director of the School of Music from 1945 to 1947 and composer-in-residence and professor of piano until his retirement in 1963.
In 1964 he returned to the West, settling in the small town of Orinda, California, east of the Berkeley hills. Here, as everywhere else, he drew his greatest inspiration from nature, jotting down notes as he explored local trails. His fertile imagination and constant creative efforts left little time for self-promotion, and although nearly blind in old age, he continued to compose until the very end of his ninety-one years.
Throughout his long career, Ernst Bacon's chief aim as a composer was to express the spirit of America in music as Whitman, Emerson, Melville and others had done in literature. He was deeply immersed in our country's history and folklore, as well as its indigenous music; and was inspired by the poetry, folk songs, jazz rhythms and geography of America as well as the landscape itselfwhich he hiked, climbed and also painted. All of these elements found their way into his music.
Those who influenced Bacon included Carl Sandburg, Thornton Wilder and Roland Hayes. Bacon's music expresses the common touch and humor of Sandburg; the profound simplicity of Wilder; and the melodic beauty that Roland Hayes expressed so movingly in his singing. As with Schubert, a large body of more than 250 art songs is the heart of an oeuvre that also includes numerous chamber, orchestral and choral works, as well as descriptive pieces for piano.
In 1998 numerous vocal-chamber concerts of Bacon's music were held in honor of his centennial. These events took place at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City; the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress; the Free Library of Philadelphia; Syracuse, New York; Evanston and Chicago, Illinois; also in Berkeley and Waln
