Customer Reviews:
the perfect companion for 'Holy Water'.......2007-05-12
When 'Holy Water' went huge with radio airplay they decided to stick to a winning formula and it worked big time
the same dark bluesy performance of catchy hit songs continues here
'One Night' 'No Smoke Without A Fire' 'The Way It Goes' and my favorite 'Shake It Up' makes this a winning album
the upside - from start to finish this is one hit song after another, the songwriting is fantastic,my favorite tracks are 'Shake It Up' and 'The Way It Goes' and 'No Smoke Without A Fire'
the downside - the only small complaint is that it sounds almost identical to 'Holy Water' but it's not really a bad thing,it just shows they found their style and wanted to stick with it
the bottom line - if you love great rock and roll with catchy hooks and great lyrics, this is the album for you...donutman says so!!!
Great Guitar Album.......2007-01-29
This album illustrates the true talent of Mick Ralphs, which has taken a back seat to Paul Rodgers in the past.
Enjoy it for what it is..great hard rock music .......2006-10-13
No, this is not like the soulful hard rock sounds of the Paul Rodgers fronted Bad Company. No, this is not the 1970's either.
An overhaul was needed after the album "Fame and Fortune" failed to really ignite. Despite what some might say, this incarnation and the music it produced was solid, melodic, and enjoyable.
Guitarist Mick Ralph's and drummer Simon Kirke updated the sound and swagger and it suited the late 80's and 90's to a T.
Stand out tracks: One Night, Shake it up, No smoke without a fire, Bad Man, and Dirty Boy.
Slick and overproduced, but a joy to listen to at High DB's.
Above average.......2006-02-23
"No Smoke without a fire" is the best track. "One night" and "Bad Man" are good.
Excellent era!!.......2005-09-16
the brian howe era is the best from bad company...very melodic music and this cd is not the exception...very very good, like Holy Water or Here Comes Trouble...excellent

The Next Logical Step.......2006-12-21
One listen, and I'm hooked. As the title of this review states, this is, without a doubt, the next logical step for Dead or Alive (creatively speaking). From beginning to end, the hits just keep coming! "Brand New Lover," with its longing for something more exciting; "Something in My House," (Sidebar: Is that really a Spanish guitar? Yes...OMG...it is!) begging you to protect him the frightening something that's haunting his house; and "Special Star," with the wish he made in his sleep coming true.
A definite must-have for any DoA fan!!!
SAW it up! Throw it out........2006-01-30
This LP is just CRAP! What a waste of Pete Burns. The ONLY reason I gave this LP two stars is simple (and it AIN'T "Special Star") is twofold: "Something In My House" and "Hooked On Love". Although SIMY drones on WAY too long. This track needs to be edited baby. SAW are at it again. Repetition and pulling Pete Burns into an abyss that took him years to escape from.
Great album.......2005-07-26
Although I had the first albums of DOA too, this was the album that really convinced me most as a teen :) It's a Stock Aitken Waterman production, but not in the style of Kylie & Co. Pete convinces with a very strong voice - you think he could sing opera. "Something in my house" is a great opener with Spanish guitars and high energy beats, but also "slower" songs like "Then there was you" and "Special star" work very well. A good album with a steady production and a good song choice.
Great under rated CD!.......2005-06-13
Kireviewer is obviously not a fan of Dead or Alive or would know that the band has put out alot more than one or two Cds...The single Brand new Lover did make the top 20 and was played way too much on MTV!! I love this CD it is great...one of those albums where you like every song on it....obviously Kireviewer thinks that the artwork on the album and name of a band should stereotype what kind of music is put out...they are a dance music club style band...always have been and probably always will be.....They have put out at the very least 8 full CDs and several remix compilations as well as tribute albums and have a HUGE cult following in America as well as Europe and have been huge in Japan....America isnt the only music market...and of course i tend to like bands that i have to import such as Nina Hagen and lene lovich...I absolutely dont listen to the Radio as i wont have anyone telling ME what i have to listen to or what should be popular with me...Dead or Alive is different and creative and interesting....Pete Burns voice is Deep and affecting....this band dosnt get a fair chance in America at all...i dont know what problems they have with theyre Lable in America..(i think its Sony) but i hope it will be resolved and brand New material will be released soon...a new comilation of dance remixes is about to be released in 2005...and i hope that someday soon a Video collection will be released in America as they did in England. KireViewer just dosnt have a clue....go listen to Air Supply and give us all a break!
A Brand New Lover...hey hey!.......2004-02-29
During my formative 80's years, I had the good fortune of having Lynn Benally, a classmate at high school and at the junior college I was at, turn me on to all sorts of music and groups. One was Dead Or Alive's Mad Bad and Dangerous To Know, which he bought at the local small business records and tapes outlet, and I was with him when he did. I instantly liked the first song that played, the infectious "Brand New Lover," which eventually hit the US Top 20. Given the album cover, I thought it was some weird goth band, but no, it was sheer bubblegum. I eventually bought this myself, and I noticed something that should've clicked after my hearing "Brand New Lover" was when I looked above the song listing on the verso and saw who produced it--Stock, Aitken, Waterman. Well, I should've realized, shouldn't I? Key: *=remix included on Rip It Up compilation
The first four songs really kick. "Brand New Lover"* is what the protagonist is looking for, and it's set to the usual S-A-W barrage of insistent drum machines and synth keyboards, and the occasional guitar solo. And dig those "hey hey!" voices. The thumping drums and brass-like synths in "I'll Save You All My Kisses"* is set at the same breakneck tempo, which rival the song "Venus" by Bananarama, also a S-A-W client.
A more bass keyboard at uptempo pace sets the backing for "Son Of A Gun" which benefits from some shouts from the band. "Then There Was You" is a relief about finding that someone else that cures someone's blues: "I looked around/look what I found/what was I supposed to do?" The question then is, "do you promise you won't go away-ay-ay?"
The version of "Something In My House"* is a lengthy 7:20, which probably made for some good club music stomping. The inclusion of a Spanish guitar and a harp-like melody on the synths isn't repeated on the other tracks. With the stuttered "I"'s, I thought I was listening to Stacey Q. Seriously, Pete Burns' New-Wave distinctive resonant vocals sound nothing like dat Q girl. And just what is in his house? He's "haunted by a love that isn't there" by "the ghost of a blonde dead up there."
"Hooked On Love"* makes the trite analogy of love with drugs, and even has the protagonist asking for a good supplier, "I simply gotta have some more." The analogy continues where he was happy without it, and hardly thought about it in the beginning. So that's what Roxy Music meant by love is the drug. Maybe.
A slight tropical sound comes in during "I Want You," which isn't as breakneck as the other numbers, but has some fanfare bursts on occasion. The last song, "Special Star," continues the uptempo nature of the album.
Like the later Kylie Minogue debut, there's hardly any variation in sound or tempo from the S-A-W format, and it's an instant party disc to boot. Small wonder that half of the Rip It Up compilation was ripped from this album. And once again, thanks to Lynn for introducing them to me.

Trad,Bad,&Dangerous.......1999-12-09
Betsy's beautiful voice and awesome range are showcased magnificently by these songs. She is able to emote as well as to sing, and it's a lucky listener indeed who chooses this CD. Betsy is one of those singers who sounds just as good live as she does recorded, and she also shines with the very gifted Poor Clares. I've been watching her for years at O'Flaherty's in New Orleans and have to say that this CD is an excellent representation of her repertoire, previous recordings notwithstanding. I only wish she had included the heartbreaking "Mary Parker's Lament."
a voice that will haunt your dreams.......1999-05-11
McGovern is the lead singer of the New Orleans-based Celtic group, The Poor Clares. Her voice is unbelievably rich and expressive, and shines in this collection of Celtic songs and ballads, with excellent accompaniment from members of The Poor Clares and others.

Customer Reviews:
Once more into the limousine, dear friends.......2005-08-31
After three decades in the wilderness, John Howard returns with a set of new songs. This is perhaps only a taste of what's to come, but the taste is intoxicating. Most of the songs have the familiar melodramatic tone, half-swooning, half-troubled. There are occasional diversions like the jaunty cabaret of What A Carry On, quintessentially British, as perhaps could be said of John, except his songs often have a widescreen American grandeur. Maintaining The Anger and Early Closing Days suggest cruise ship cabaret, which is a touch surprising, but the songs themselves are effective. The triumphs of the album are certainly the dramatic ballads. The album opens with the brief but beautiful The Luxury Of Rain, concluding with the lines, 'Today I walked past your window just to ignore you/But you weren't in'. You can almost hear the pained laugh. Such A Drag is as the title suggests, about cross-dressing, and the underlying sadness always awaiting the high-octane drag queen. Expect The Unexpected combines elegance and pain to moving effect. Alot of the songs are about frustration of one kind or another, and disappointment, something John himself can surely understand. The title track searches desperately for an answer to a relationship in freefall, as he reports, 'Boredom grows into a sense of hatred'. In his heart the singer knows the situation is doomed. The harpsichord-driven Death And The Bridesmaid Boy is a highlight, with its tale of a boy/man who fails to get the attention he so craves, and in a combination of despair and petulance, throws himself off a building. However, the album does end on an upnote with the glam anthem, Dear Glitterheart, where John gets to revisit his youth. Overall the tone is downbeat, but John's dynamic melodies always ensure that the sad songs are never too depressing. The album project between John Howard and Robert Cochrane can be deemed a real success. The general aura is that of an introspective West End musical (if such a thing actually existed, and if West End musicals were actually any good). The fact that Howard is older now lends the melancholy reflection a more authentic ring, a genuine depth. Experience colours the sadness. And the words seem even more heartfelt, despite the fact that John didn't actually write them. This is the gift of a true songwriter. With another album due, Howard fans can now look forward to even more new songs, this time completely self-penned. Until then, wile away the dark hours with this.
