Album Description

"Just Because" offers an escape to a crowded room filled with an organic, sensual, funky vibe from tracks one through eleven. The Groove and the licks are reminiscent of a Coltrane staccato, a Sarah Vaughn run and the comfort of a Donny Hathaway rift that just wraps around you and hold you comfortably. Oh yeah, Conya is back!

The Eleven-song disc represents an evolution of spirit. From the light, airy, danceable Opening cut "Just Because," to the smoky vibey, "Stay," to the gospel tinged, "Sweet Luv," and the hopeful aspiring, "Miracle." Conya pulls it all from her inner being and puts it on display for the world.

5 out of 5 stars Ms Doss.......2006-10-04

I have both of her project and I luv them both equally. I have to say she one of my favorite artist. This album is strictly for the grown and sexy. Tracks 8 & 11 are truly my favorites. I downloaded the album on my IPOD within minutes after recieving it in the mail. Now I rock them both on my IPOD and in my car. You will love the smooth sound of her poems turned into song. My advice is to not sleep on this. This is real talent right here.

5 out of 5 stars another grat album for Ms. doss .......2006-02-08

This cd is still in heavy rotation in my CD player. Ms. Doss is one of the better r&b singers around these days. Even though i dont have her poems album, I was smart enough to buy just because while it was 10.00 on amazon because when it's no longer in print, it's gonna cost a fortune. The album starts with just because, a laid back track to groove to, and you can just listen to it straight through. Some of the better songs on this album is stay, the wind, day by day, what should I do, sweet love, sixth of june, and damn that. it's a shame that she is so underrated because she can clearly outsing any of the teirra maries and ashanti's out there. It's comforting that there are some artists that still make real music. Not that crap that's played on the radio.

5 out of 5 stars DOSS IS BOSS in NEO soul.............2006-01-14

I was introduced to this phenomenal young lady at a house party, where she actually sang live for one of my friends whom she used to work with or what have you......she is a great performer, she has a great sultry voice that captures you and sends you soaring to the clouds, her music is inspiring and funny, and it makes you laugh at yourself and life in general, it made me think how did she see into my house when I was actually doing exactly what the song "STAY" says......lol
She takes you spinning around on a whirlwind of emotions and I am glad I had a chance to ride her musical rollercoaster...

It's Joan Osborne who sums it up best in the promotional material accompanying this tribute album: " Dolly Parton is a gifted artist cleverly disguised as a media superstar and sex bomb." Osborne's got it right. Beyond and beneath Parton's well-publicized and oft-caricatured curves and angles, lurks the heart and soul of one of modern country music's very best songwriters--the best, perhaps, since the great Loretta Lynn. In fitting celebration of the 35th anniversary of the release of Just Because I'm A Woman, Parton's very first solo album, contemporary leading ladies of country and pop, including Norah Jones, Alison Krauss, Shania Twain, Joan Osborne, Melissa Etheridge, Emmylou Harris, and Sinead O'Connor have offered up worthy new interpretations of some of Parton's classic compositions. That said, some of the highlights here are from lesser-known singers: Mindy Smith's haunting rendition of "Jolene," Kasey Chambers' bitter-sweet take on "Little Sparrow," and Allison Moorer's tender turn on "Light Of A Clear Blue Morning." --Bob Allen

4 out of 5 stars Good... but some songs are lamely done..........2007-03-28

I personally adore Dolly Parton and this album really is a great tribute to her as country music's biggest stars and most influencal voices come together in a great rendition of her best songs!

I personally ADORE Shania Twain's version of "coat of many colors"... I bought the album on this purpose... and I loved it!

3 out of 5 stars Once you hear Dolly the rest .......2006-09-04

pale in comparison.
It is kind of fun hearing the different styles for her brilliant compositions.
Alison Krauss doing a fabu-tastic slower, bluegrassy 9 to 5.
best cut on the cd.
Melissa Etheridge's unique I Will Always Love You. I love the musical arrangements on this one.
Norah Jones tepid the Grass is Blue
Joan Osborne's Do I ever cross your mind(I'd buy her stuff if she sang like this all the time) soft and folksy, really nice.
The genre-defying Shelby Lynne with a totally cool The Seeker
Mindy Smith on Jolene nice enough, but her phrasing is mushy. (Listen to country artist Sherrie Austin for a wonderful cover of Jolene)
EmmyLou with To Daddy. Lovely.
kill me now...Shania Twain murdering the beloved Coat of Many Colors.
Egad, how ghastly. Even with some backup from Alison Krauss and Union Station, Shania just defiles it.
Kasey Chambers on Little Sparrow is not up to the task. At all.
Sinead O'Connor on Dagger through the heart. Not bad, actually.
Allison Moorer on Light of a Clear Blue Morning. Nice version. Could have done without the affectation of the sound effects. Made to sound like a well used vinyl album.
Me'Shell N'Degeocello on Two Doors Down. I expect it works for ya if you like that genre. Not my kind of music but I like it better than Shania. EEK.
and a bonus track with the great lady herself singing
Just Because I'm A Woman.

There is only one or two songs that dont work out but this CD is great - Dont Get me wrong - These are great songs!
The Downside: 9 to 5 dosent have the usual kick to it alison krauss slows it down too much this time! and Two doors down, But the reason why Im being down on it is because im not a fan of rap music!
The Upside: all the other songs

Album standouts: Jolene & The Grass is blue & Light of a clear blue Morning

I also recommend: HUNGRY AGIN, THE GRASS IS BLUE, LITTLE SPARROW,HALOS AND HORNS, FOR GOD AND COUNTRY & THOSE WERE THE DAYS

Pretty good tribute album. The best song here is easily Shania Twain's cover of Dolly's classic hit "Coat Of Many Colors", Shania sings this song with great emotion and sincerity.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars most underrated.......2005-03-02

People underestimate Dolly Parton, but she is a talented songwriter and entertainer, not to mention a shrewd businesswoman and quite a character. I am a lifelong fan, I am happy to admit, and this album has one of my childhood favorites, "Love and Learn". The live version of "Coat of Many Colors" is quite touching as well, very spare. Dolly's voice is full of the kind of ache that makes the songs here believable.

5 out of 5 stars The headwaters of all that is Dolly Parton.......2004-08-11

Having waxed an earlier LP for Monument, this isn't Parton's official solo debut, but with her meteoric rise to prominence as Porter Wagoner's duet partner, and her transfer to RCA, this 1968 release marks the true spiritual start of her solo career. It not only lays out the spare sound that would make her early recordings so powerful (and distinct from the countrypolitan records being churned out by Nashville at the time), but stakes out the songwriting prowess that would continue to shine to this very day.

In addition to a few of Wagoner's band members and fine Nashville studio hands (including stellar, and recently un-retired, steel player, Lloyd Green), Parton was lucky to have Chet Atkins' assistant Bob Ferguson at the producer's desk. In contrast to Atkins, Ferguson used a lighter sound that kept Parton and her background singers (including Anita Carter) front and center. Parton penned four of this set's tunes (the title track, the self-empowered "You're Gonna Be Sorry," the Bakersfieldian "I'll Oilwells Love You," and the powerful love-to-abandonment parable "The Bridge"), but she's also very well served by like-minded songs collected from others. "False Eyelashes" is a twangy tale of failed ambitions, and the self-discovery of Neal Merritt's "The Only Way Out (Is to Walk Over Me)" fits Parton's combination of fragility and resolve to a tee.

RCA's CD reissue adds two previously unreleased live tracks from 1970, one is the title tune, and the second of the first-ever recording of "Coat of Many Colors." While the latter doesn't have the heartstring-production of the subsequent hit single, it's sparse acoustic guitar accompaniment (rendering this nearly an a cappella performance) starkly frames its hymnal qualities. This is probably the only time you'll ever hear Parton announce on stage, "I'd like to do a song called 'The Coat of Many Colors'" and not hear the audience thunder with applause (until the end, of course). You can sense the breathless discovery of Parton's audience hearing this gem for the first time, and Parton's emotion in singing it for an audience that hasn't already heard the true-life story.

As great as Parton's hits are, it's even greater to hear them in the context of all the other fine songs she wrote and sang. A few of her later albums (e.g., 1971's "Coat of Many Colors") may edge this one slightly in overall strength, but this is a truly essential part of country music's heritage and a great place to begin one's appreciation of Parton's entire catalog.

5 out of 5 stars An early classic.......2004-04-28

Following her transfer to RCA at Porter Wagoner's insistence, this was Dolly's first solo album. In the sixties, her duets with Porter were considerably more successful, but I regard Dolly's early albums - solo and duet - as some of the finest that she recorded. This is not my favorite among them but I'm pleased to see it finally get a CD release in America. It was released in Europe on CD some years ago as half of a twofer, paired with her first duet album. On this re-mastered version, there are a couple of bonus tracks both live cuts, one of them being Coat of many colors before she did a studio recording.

The main album shows what Dolly singing the kind of songs that she does best - traditional country songs about life as it really is in rural America. When she recorded this album, there was a lot of vibrato in her voice, which I love, but Dolly received advice to get rid of it if she could. Over the years, she gradually changed her voice and the vibrato disappeared altogether over time.

Like Tammy and Loretta, Dolly established her reputation by recording some songs that women could relate to. On this album, the title track (proclaiming that women should not be blamed any more than men) is the clearest example of such a song, though men also love this song, perhaps for different reasons.

Apart from the title track, Dolly has a few other warnings to men in songs such as You're gonna be sorry, Little bit slow to catch on and I'm running out of love. Dolly sings about a sister in trouble because of a man (Baby sister), having two men (I wish I felt this way at home), marrying for money (I'll oil wells love you), the struggle to achieve fame (False eyelashes), trying to keep her man (The only way out is to walk over me) and suicide (The bridge). Two tracks (Love and learn, Try being lonely) are sad ballads about former relationships.

None of the songs on this album have become standards but that just means that there is all the more reason to by this album. Now, how about CD releases of In the good old days, My blue ridge mountain boy, Fairest of them all, Touch your woman, Bubbling over, Love is like a butterfly, Bargain store, The seeker/We used to and All I can do - not forgetting all those duet albums.

5 out of 5 stars Now, THIS is more like it!.......2004-01-18

At last!

One of the biggest frustrations about the music industry has been BMG/RCA's atrocious treatment of the back catalog of Dolly Parton. Go to virtually any comprehensive music store (or check Amazon) and you will find literally dozens of "best of" compilations of Parton all containing "Here You Come Again," "I Will Always Love You," "Nine to Five" and several other hits repackaged over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

A few years ago BMG/RCA relaunched Buddha records as a reissue label and two long out of print album gems, "Coat of Many Colors," and "Jolene" were finally put out on CD. It was hoped that this would signify a new trend.

Alas the reissues stopped for a while (aside for a pair of her pop albums and, of course, several MORE compilations with the same songs over and over again). Luckily we now how another gem making its very first appearance on CD.

This is actually Parton's solo debut, and while it doesn't show off her songwrting talents as much as subsequent albums would (only a small handful of the songs here were written by Parton) it does show the world that there is more to Parton than the giggly Mae West meets Barbie image that she has acquired over the year and, more importantly, that there is more to her than the generic sounding slick pop sound that made her a mint in the late 70's and early 80's. Fans of REAL country will want to check this one out pronto as will anyone else who wants to encourage a more imaginative reissue program than BMG/RCA has generally been doing with the Parton catalog.

4 out of 5 stars Up-and-Coming Talent.......2003-11-22

Porter Wagoner has been criticized by many for holding Parton back, but under his mentorship at RCA, she recorded the most understated, graceful albums of her career, this being her first solo album for the label. Eschewing the smooth, countrypolitan sound that was fashionalble at the time (ironic, considering the pop-crossover direction Parton's music would take in the next decade), Wagoner and producer Bob Ferguson kept things simple and straightforward: banjo, fiddle, pedal steel and honky tonk piano. With her clear-as-a-bell vocals and unmistakable songwriting talent already apparent (the title song would become a classic), Parton sounded no doubt as fresh and exhillerating as, say, Alison Krauss would sound twenty-five years later.

Let's hope the success of this reissue prompts RCA to re-release more of Parton's early solo work.

5 out of 5 stars Sensational Vocal Album by Carole Farley and William Bolcom.......2007-02-13

Carole Farley and William Bolcom have recorded this landmark CD, and I can easily understand why this CD received a GRAMMY nomination in the "Best Vocal Recording of the Year" and a 2nd GRAMMY nomination in the "Best Engineered Recording of the Year" category. It's indeed one of the best vocal albums of contemporary songs ever made. Carole Farley, who made her MET debut in the MET's first LULU production, seems to be just at home with Puccini, Poulenc, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and even Latin American popular songs (her Lecuona songs album is extremely beautiful).
William Bolcom's accompaniment is brilliant, and the songs are a revelation.
J.B. (Pittsburgh, Pa)

4 out of 5 stars Great Songs, but Mind the Singer.......2006-07-04

This is one of those discs where the listener has to balance the advantages of the program with the disadvantages of the performance. Bolcom is one of this country's most versatile and brilliant composers, and those qualities are demonstrated to great effect in the songs on this album. His piano playing is, as one would expect, also solid and expressive. The drawback here is Carole Farley. Although her diction and intonation are good, as far as tone-color goes, she seems to be a one-trick pony; and if you don't like that trick (opera singer trying to sound like what she thinks a musical theater singer sounds like), listening to her can get very tiring. So while I highly recommend the disc for its content, I suggest listening to excerpts first before buying just to make sure that the singer's voice doesn't drive you batty.

5 out of 5 stars The Songs of William Bolcom.......2006-02-14

The American composer William Bolcom (b. 1938) is best-known for his large-scale setting of William Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Experience," which is available on a 3-CD Naxos set. This new collection of Bolcom's songs also on Naxos shows the composers's lifelong fascination with Blake. It includes an early lyrical setting of Blake's poem, "Mary" which deals with a beautiful and intelligent young woman and her rejection by her society. In the several torch and cabaret-style works it includes, the collection also shows Bolcom's attempts to fuse classical with popular styles of music. Bolcom also has done so in his piano music, much of which is heavily influenced by ragtime.

The songs on this CD are performed and selected by soprano Carole Farley with Bolcom himself at the piano. Ms. Farley has also recorded for Naxos' "American classics" series a selection of the songs of Ned Rorem with Rorem at the piano. Ms. Farley and Naxos are doing listeners a service by introducing them to the world of the American art song.

The highlight of this CD is the 20-minute song-cycle "I will breathe a mountain" in which Bolcom sets 11 poems by American women. The poems were selected by Alice Fulton, and they include Fulton's own "I will swing those obligatos around" in which the young singer describes a come-on from a boor. The song writing is declamatory in character with many twists, turns, and shouts in the vocal line. Only the setting of H.D.'s "Never More Will the Wind" is lyrical and flowing. Besides Fulton and H.D. the settings include poems by Millay, Gwendolwn Brooks (a poem called "The Crazy Woman" with appropriately wild shrieks) Anne Sexton, Denise Levertov, Marianne Moore (listen to what Ms. Farley makes of the poets wish to be a DRA' GON), Emily Dickinson (in a moving poem of the stillness of a home after death),Louise Bogan, May Swenson, and Elizabeth Bishop. "I will breathe a mountain" is an outstanding and moving contemporary American song-cycle and is in itself sufficient reason for hearing this recording.

The CD also includes a second exquisite cycle, "Songs to Dance" which sets ten miniature poems by George Montgomery. This is a work to be danced as well as sung, and it has apparently been performed live only once, by the composer, his wife, the soprano Joan Morris, and dancer, Dan Wagoner. It has never been recorded before. The work deserves to be heard and seen.

Many of the remaining works on this CD are cabaret-style theatrical pieces that Bolcom composed in collaboration with lyricist Arnold Weinstein. The best of these are two torch songs from a show called "Casino Paradise": Night Make my Day (a parody of the torch style which is sometimes performed straight) and "My Father the Gangster", in which a young woman laments how men are, understandably, worried about her father and afraid to approach her. The collection opens with a scream by Ms. Farley in the erotic novelty "You cannot have me now", about the affairs of the wife of a German officer, sung with a heavily inflected German accent and also set to words by Weinstein.

I enjoyed Bolcom's short setting of May Swenson's poem "The Digital Wonder Watch" with the tick-ticking in the piano. This song is a satire of technology, with the poet describing the features of her "wonderful watch" while asking: "Does it show how to wind up/a broken heart?" The other songs on the CD include the passionate "The Last Days of Mankind", conceived for rock singer Marianne Faithful, two eloquent settings of poems by Richard Tillinghast, and four concluding early collaborations between Bolcom and Weinstein.

This CD offers an opportunity to explore the world of American song in the works of a leading contemporary composer. The cycle, "I will breathe a mountain" will be a lasting achievement in American art song.

5 out of 5 stars I WAS SPEECHLESS.......2000-07-18

I tell ya, the first time I had heard of LaShun was when I first began going to church about 2 years ago, and she used to sing and attend our church(I was not a member at the time, I was in the world). Anyway, when our church had made their last album, "Jonathan Greer and Cathedral of Faith Choir"-"Just Jesus," she came up on stage and impromtu a song with the director giving her the words in her ear. One night a friend of mine, who is a member of the choir, showed me the video of the concert. Now, I wasn't watching the tape, but I had it pumping through my stereo, while I was cleaning my apartment. Then, a song called "Behold His Face" came on and man, I heard this high-pitched, annointing come from my speakers and all of a sudden I was shoutin' and praisin' God. She sang that song with sooo much power until I could not stop praisin' the Lord. Needless to say, I wore the video and then the CD out on that track, but the second bomb came when I bought "Just Because God Said It" and listened to the title track. Once again, she did it with such power, I was speechless. My favorite line is when she says, "has God spoken anything in your life, if you can just belieeeeeeeve God, and stand on His Word, God said it!" The backing choir, Keith Brooks and New Creation from New Birth Baptist in Atlanta did an excellent job. If you ever get a chance to hear her with Cathedral of Faith choir, it is awesome. The song is "Behold His Face." A must have.

4 out of 5 stars Conya = (C)onfident (O)riginal (N)ewcomer that's (Y)oung and (A)mazing!.......2005-08-06

Nine times out of ten you haven't heard of Conya Doss. This is her second release, with the first being A Poem From Ms. Doss, and both being released independently. You probably won't find these at your local Sam Goody or Tower, but you can find both at Amazon.com (see link to the left). A Poem From Ms. Doss was an album with music comparable to the likes of Vivian Green or Adriana Evans, but the voice was still undeniably exceptional. Just Because is more of the same from Ms. Doss, proving with each note that it doesn't matter whether you're independent or with a major label.
Standout tracks include the smooth "Missing You," the title track "Just Because," "Stay," and the funky "Damn That." But a definite personal favorite has to be "Ain't Givin' Up" with the kind of "feel good" message and expressions that most R&B artists tend to not talk about. It's not all about bashing the brothers with Ms. Doss, but she does gives her two cents on songs like "Here We Go Again" and "What Should I Do." It's almost a shame that Conya Doss can be so slept on and underrated at at time when we are practically begging for good music. If you have been looking high and low for a worthwhile R&B cd, Just Because is definitely one to drop your dead presidents on.

Conya Doss - Just Because (Dome, 2004)

When I bought Conya's first album, A Poem About Ms. Doss, I really didn't care for her. But after hearing it over and over again (blame that on my wife), she totally made me a believer. Add to that the fact that Edwin "Tony" Nicholas helps write and produce her songs (he is Gerald Levert's longtime collaborator) and I am totally sold on anything Ms. Doss does. The album flows well and my favorite songs are "Damn That" and "Sweet Love". Yeah, I wish the album was longer (it's around 45 minutes) but I'm just glad that Conya has a second album. -EJR

4 out of 5 stars Damn Damn Good.......2005-06-16

I had her first cd and was so happy to see that she wasn't going to be another one hit wonder. This cd is just as good as the first. She's a slept on artist but I hope she starts to get the recognition she deserves. She has a beautiful style, sweet voice and her beats are nice. The only problem I have with the cd is that some of the recordings sound defective - like they're dirty or have cracks or pops in them, but nothing major that ruins any of the songs. And like another reviewer stated, pick this up before it's gone (and you end up paying $40 for a used copy)!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-03-22

I first fell in love with the song "Just Because" last summer in 2004, when I was home last summer visting my sister! She had the tv on music choice and "Just Because" came on." I was like damn, who is that, she has a nice voice." After searching numerous stores for her album I had no luck finding the album till a friend on the incognito board told me that Dusty Groove had the album, I was so amazed that they had it, and for a reasonable price.

Conya, has some cuts on there! My man and I were having some problems and this cd summed up how I was feeling. Usually I click with Jill Scott on the slow jams, but Conya is giving Jill a run for her money.

I love "The Wind", very good song.

Well I said, my two cents.

Peace, K boogie

4 out of 5 stars Like an Addict.......2005-03-19

I am just outraged that her last album, "A poem about Ms. Doss" isn't available anymore. When I first purchased it was from a 3rd party dealer and now I can't it find online anymore, I had to purchase it from a Music store in Ohio and I live in Chicago. That is crazy! I loved her 1st album so much, she has me betting on Ebay just to get it. So I'm sure if her 1st album have me feening the a drug addict, I'm sure this album is no joke. So Conya Doss fans' I suggest you get it now while you still can, because once she pulls the rug from under the online dealers, that's it!
