Chuck Brown is a Washington, DC institution and our "National Treasure!" This man started "Go-Go!" He is 70+ years old and still manages to stay current with what is happening on the music scene today. For those who don't know what "Go-Go" is, it is a genre of music (a sort of sub-genre of funk music) that originated in Washington, DC. Although there were several bands that contributed to the evolution of Go-Go, Chuck Brown developed most of the characteristics or hallmarks of the style. The song "Bustin' Loose"(1978)...that was Chuck! The song reached #1 on the Billboard Charts in February/March 1979. Several mainstream artists have sampled Go-Go songs or used Go-Go beats (Salt 'N Pepa - "My Mic Sounds Nice", L.L. Cool J - "Rock the Bells", Grace Jones - "Slave to the Rhythm." Go-Go Band EU (Experience Unlimited) received international exposure when they were featured in Spike Lee's movie "School Daze" performing their song [...].

My husband and I were having lunch at Ben's Chili Bowl today and "Chuck Baby" started playing on the jukebox. Everyone in the place was bobbing their heads! People were still singing the song long after it had ended! I left Ben's and went straight to store to buy this CD! As we say in DC, "This joint is CRANKIN'!" This is the serious party/driving CD. It was produced by Carl "Chucky" Thompson who has produced for artists such as Mary J. Blige, Biggie, NAS, Faith Evans, etc. If you are not familiar with Chuck Brown's music, this would be a wonderful introduction for you. The CD, like Chuck's live concerts, will not disappoint. My favorites are "Chuck Baby" (Chuck's daughter KK has a really nice flow on this one), "Theme from 'The Godfather'", and "Block Party." Maryland native and most-able crooner, Raheem DeVaughn makes an appearance on the song "Eye Candy." We (the DC Metro area) pledge our allegiance to Chuck Brown! He rocks!

My husband heard an interview with Chuck Brown on NPR and they also played a song from this album. He really liked it so I ordered it. The first song was a little funny but the following songs just made ya have fun. We ended up just totally liking this CD and type of music.

I recall listening to Chuck Brown back in the day when I was introduce to GO Go music back in college. So to hear him with new material was great. It has been nearly 20 years after I first heard his music and all I can say " it's off the hook"!
I huried up to buy this copy at the local music stores but all were sold out or they just didn't know how big this man music is to the now adults that grew up liastening to his music back in the 80's.

Dan Zanes, lead singer of the 1980s roots-rock band the Del Fuegos, didn't need to enlist the high-profile help of pals Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega to produce a crowd-pleasing kids' record, but he got it anyway. On Rocket Ship Beach, where traditional tunes such as "Polly Wolly Doodle" (with Crow) and "Erie Canal" (with Vega) mingle in loosey-goosey, just-for-the-fun-of-it fashion with originals such as the plucky "All My Friends Live in the Woods" (written by Bad Company buddy Simon Kirke), Zanes exhibits the same plugged-in exuberance that gave his former band its unpredictable zing. Besides the no-amateurs instrumentation, which includes Zanes on guitar, lap steel, banjo-mandolin, and studiophone, and G.E. Smith on banjo-mandolin and guitar as part of a kickin' string band that performs the classic "King Kong Kitchie," plus a cluster of others, what stands out most about this 17-track funfest is its draw-you-in friendliness. Pitching in with the pros (who also include dancehall rapper Rankin' Don--he delivers the gruff stuff on "Father Goose" and "Sunny Side of the Street") are family friends such as the gang of West Indian babysitters turned vocal group the Sandy Girls, who give it up to impressive, get-you-boogying effect on "Emmanuel Road," and a kindergarten class that contributes, adorably, to "Sidewalks of New York." It's great!.......2007-01-27

I'm a first-time Mom who was looking for a CD both my daughter and I could enjoy. We rec'd this CD at Christmas along with "Buzz Buzz" by Laurie Berkner. This one is my personal favorite. I think I enjoy it as much, if not more than my daughter (who is 1). The songs are addicting and I, like a previous reviewer, find myself singing/humming them even when my daughter is not around. Polly Wolly Doodle and King Kong Kitchie are fabulous! I highly recommend giving this CD a spin. I'm sure my daughter will love it even more when she gets a little older.

Honestly, this CD sucks.......2007-01-18

I was excited to receive this CD because of its great reviews. Once I received it however, I found it barely listenable. My toddler daughter looked and me and said "Off!Off!" and we took it off the CD player after only 10 minutes.

People can make of Raffi all they want, but at least his music is tolerable!

Don't waste your money on this lemon of a CD.

My 2 year old and 1 year old think this CD ROCKS! My son will point to the CD player and cry and whine until I turn it on. From song one they both wiggle, giggle and dance all over. The songs are very folksy, upbeat, and easy to groove too. Get this CD and watch your kids get jiggy wit' it!

rocket ship beach review.......2006-11-10

Rocket Ship Beach was my introduction to Dan Zanes. I have a new son and I was searching for some music we could both enjoy. I found this and thought I would give it a shot. The cd is wonderful. The music is addicting and I find myself driving down the road singing to myself....without my son in the car! Polly Wolly Doodle, the first track, is one of my favorites (and not because I am a Sheryl Crow fan). Another beautiful song is "Hello". This cd is upbeat, fun and yet different from some more typical childrens music. My son really enjoys the different sounds and rhythms on the cd. The cd has a few little introductions where you can hear children, a phone ringing, ect. This cd is sure to put you in a good mood. I highly recommend it! I am actually waiting for another Dan Zanes cd to arrive I liked it so much.

People in the Maryland/DC area, and those around the world lucky enough to get into the area's "best kept secret" have long known who and what Chuck Brown is... and his influence on not only an entire genre of music, but countless other artists who've followed in his footsteps - - knowingly and unknowingly. And now, finally a retrospective that covers his entire career, from his ultra funky "Kool and The Gang"ish disco/hard core funk roots in the mid-70s (when as far as the rest of the world is concerned he had his "one hit wonder" Bustin' Loose even though the best was yet to come) - - all the way up to current times, where as "The Godfather of Go Go" he comfortably holds court, guitar in hand - - and even rappin' and out rappin' fans and follows barely a third of his age - - often backed by the P-Funk horns, and a who's who of Jazz, funk, go go players... the truth is Chuck Brown is a style, genre and persona all unto himself - - "good people" yet "wickedly funky"...

Though DC's go go music (which Chuck Brown created) never caught on like it should have, the truth is that if you listen to this CD and don't come out convinced that Chuck Brown epitomized the words "legend", "style" and "funkyness" -- you ain't nothing...

As an added bonus, to fans of Chuck's more "musical elements", this CD is proabably his most consistantly engineered and best packaged representation to date... you really get to hear his various bands over the years work out, and have to be amazed how he's always at the helm gushing with his distinct trademarks - - the non-stop beats, those slick and funky guitar lines, the ever popping bass and congas and his funky emcee-ing and stage bands that are always funner than fun and tighter than tight.

Though Chuck can and does travel the year, it is true that he's under-appreciated... and its ashame because I truly believe that if everyone in the world knew more about him music worldwide would be 100 times as good !

I am a Chuck Brown Fan and have been one for years. I was not happy with the older songs that were included on thi sparticular album. I thought that there could have been other songs, from other venues, that could have been included on this particular CD. I still enjoy his music and am happy with the purchase.

..the Godfather of Go-Go!!! My husband bought this for me for my birthday (been a big fan of Chuck since high school). This is a wonderful walk down memory lane with some of the original classics and some new ones added for extra flava. No one does it like Chuck.
This CD stays in constant rotation in my car...it's often needed on those long rides home and especially in the summertime with the sunroof open blasting Go-Go Swing, Day-o, We Need Some Money and my new favorite - Misty!!!

Iggy And The Stooges-Raw Power *****

If you were to make a list of the one hundred greatest albums of all time Raw Power by Iggy And The Stooges would easily be in teh top ten, maybe even in the top five. No other album in the history of rock n' roll has captured a moment in time so perfectly, and brutaly. 1973, music was changing, things were not so happy an more, the 1960's were long gone, and rebellion was begining to rear its head once again as it did in 1953. A new nature was coming, a new style, a new attitude. Punk took the thoughts of the 1960's and gave them actions. Iggy And The Stooges put that on display for the entire world to see with Raw Power.

'Search And Destroy,' one of the single greatest moments in music history opens this historic album. With guitar from another planet and a swagger to match Ron Asheton and Iggy Pop created one of the most anialating songs in history. 'Search And Destroy' has been cited by many punk legends as the moment they changed the way they thought about music. 'Gimme Danger' which is another killer song. Some Iggy Pops best vocals can be heard here. Part acoustic, part electric 'Gimme Danger' is one of the best songs Iggy ever lent his name to. Its so dark and dangerous, no pun intended. This is one of those rare songs that is just so good it cant be described in words because it must be heard to fully appreciate. 'Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell' which was originaly called 'Hard To Beat' is another yet killer song. Only Iggy would have the nerve to rename a song thirty some years after it was first released to the world. One of the best guitar riffs I have ever heard is in this song. Superb. Fast, loud, unapologetic, and ferocious. All the makings of a excellent song. 'Penetration' has the coolest piano work ever. Simply Amazing. A very sexy song, which Im sure was what Iggy was going for. The lyrics are the most unattractive thing ever but the bands overall performance makes the song very sexy. Very slow, and slimy. This song is reminicent of 'Loose' from the Fun House album. Once again guitar, guitar, guitar. Asheton is one of the most underrated and overlooked guitar players in history. The title track 'Raw Power' may be the best song on the album, maybe thats why they decided to name the album after it. Great lyrics, and very catchy. Once again the piano is great. Not very complicated or fancy or anything but it fits the song perfectly. The Stooges are known for using instruments in songs that you wouldnt normaly expect to hear them in. But when they do it works somehow. 'I Need Somebody' is a personal favorite. Nice and slow blues number with mostly acoustic guitars. Very cool, very Velvet Underground/Lou Reed esq. Easily one of the top three songs the band ever recorded. Okay, 'Shake Appeal' is without a doubt the best song the band ever made in my opinion. Phenominal. Amazing guitar riff, lyrics, delivery, the entire package is great. This song best describes The Stooges and what they stood for. If you were to only hear one Iggy Pop And The Stooges song in your life, 'Shake Appeal' would be the one to hear. Fantastic is all you can say about it. 'Death Trip' is a lot like the title track 'Raw Power.' It is a great way to end the album because it is a great song but nothing about really sets it apart from the rest of the album other then the extended guitar solo and that it is the last song on the album.

If you were to own one punk album in your life or even just hear one, I must say this is the one to hear or own. It is the best, and the one that inspired almost every punk band ever. Don't let the shoddy production shy you away, the music overcomes that, and now the remastered version despite what purists may say it does sound better and really inhances the albums overall quality. Raw Power is one of those rare moments in rock n' roll history that shouldn't be missed or past up by anyone. This was the last Stooges album for almost thirty years and boy did they go out with a bang. Brilliant!

RAW POWER to the people .......2007-02-16

The title says it all. This is the way Rock n' Roll was meant to be: fast, sexy, hot, a little scary, fun, catchy, challenging, and a** scorching. RAW POWER is one of the best records for Rock lovers, but it's not for the weak kneed, lily-livered, or Punk pretenders. RAW POWER was Kurt Cobain's favorite record and is certainly THE STOOGES most musical effort. Despite RAW POWER's thin and not-so-greatly recorded sound, this is one of the most powerful and influential records in Rock. Re-mastered by Iggy Pop himself, this release has suffered a lot of criticism. I don't really care; it's what we've got to listen to, and the band was great and these performances monumental. I just want to listen to the music and I love it, imperfect as it may be. To the casual listener, the record's equal parts accessible and off-putting. RAW POWER might be my own personal favorite STOOGES album (check out FUN HOUSE, though, if at all interested in this band). But of their three albums, there is not a less than superb one. Iggy Pop brings a finesse to this record and production value that is not apparent on the first two STOOGES albums, even if THE STOOGES had to dissolve, reform under Columbia (and be promptly dropped by that label) to make it happen. I love the celeste on "Penetration," the sure fire delivery of "Search and Destroy," the uncompromising sexiness of "Shake Appeal," and Iggy himself has specified that the epic "Death Trip" was about his expectation that this record would fail, yet once again the record has that ironic insight into the future influence of THE STOOGES few, but extremely important, recordings, as he sings "...we're going down in history..."

Why the Hype?.......2007-01-10

I heard "I Need Somebody" and gave this a try. I don't dig the "in the red" sound they were going for. To be honest, I don't like most of the songs either. We can all appreciate their influence on what we jam too now, but I just couldn't get into this one. Much respect, no rotation.

This is garbage because of one thing ... the production and mix are truly awful. It sounds like you are listening to this through a transister radio, underwater and 100 yards away. It was purposely recorded that way.

This is 3 chord rock and there is nothing special about them. With other punk/garage bands, you heard the same chord progressions and time signatures infinite times but with better recordings.

I like some of Iggy Pop's material but I do not get it with this one. I know that this is regarded as a classic by a lot of critics I just don't get it.

You should stay away because I cannot imagine anybody having repeated listenings of this.

important stuff.......2006-12-16

This album has to be one of the singlemost important albums in rock history. I mean, who else played like this in the '70's? I saved my allowance for a month to buy this in 73 because I thought the cover looked so cool, and when I put it on, I never heard anything like it. I thought Iggy must have been some kind of freak to be screaming and shouting like that, but at the same time, I was fascinated with this beautiful noise coming from my speakers. Then I heard the Grand Funk Live album and it was all over. I was a confused teenager, but I found true love in rock and roll.

With The Raw & the Cooked, the Fine Young Cannibals broke into the mainstream with their particular soul-injected sound. They were seemingly infatuated with late-'50s and early-'60s Motown, and the musical influences on this album range from boogie ("Good Thing," on which Squeeze keyboardist Jools Holland goes to town with a foot-stompin' piano solo) to poodle-skirted slow dance ("As Hard As It Is," "Tell Me What"), then stretch as far as Prince-like funk ("Don't Let It Get You Down"). Possessing one of the most unusual voices in all of pop music, lead singer Roland Gift gives this album its distinction and the Fine Young Cannibals their identity. The CD liner notes have an interesting series of symbols following the names of each song, then a symbol that looks like a car for all tracks. After a page with a picture, there are four pages of names and symbols. Then there are two pages of pictures, followed by three pages explaining what each symbol represents. The first one I figured out was that Jools Holland plays a piano solo. The other symbol after his name indicates that the piano solo is for the song `Good Thing.' Now I can watch the CONCERT FOR GEORGE DVD again and figure that the guy playing piano for the song `Horse to the Water' is Jools, so the person singing must be Sam Brown. When there are so many people on stage at the same time, it can take me years to figure out where I have heard any of these people before. Roland Gift does the singing on all tracks for `The Raw & The Cooked' CD from Fine Young Cannibals. David Steele and Roland Gift wrote most of the songs, except the final song, `Ever Fallen in Love' by Peter Shelley, and `It's OK (It's Alright)' by David Steele-Roland Gift-Andrew Cox.

The symbol for `She Drives Me Crazy' might be a man hitting himself in the head with a book. "Everything I do is wrong" summarizes the obsessed man who can't help himself. The same symbol follows the name of David Z after four other symbols. He gets a credit for co-production and engineer for a total of three songs. Steele/Cox/Gift get credit for production on seven other songs, but the symbols are not in the same order as the list of the ten songs on the album. Gavin Wright gets credit for strings and Dave Anderson for remix on `As Hard as it Is.' Music is a complicated business for groups that get to be this good, and somebody has to keep track of who does what. I probably never noticed before. If I didn't have my own computer now, I might not even be interested in what an icon is for. Live and learn.

Fine Young Cannibals, a.k.a. the two-hit wonders of 1988.......2003-07-18

The minor complaints would be that "The Raw & the cooked" has only ten songs and about 35 minutes worth of music. The bigger complain would be that the Fine Young Cannibals never put out another album as good as this 1988 effort which had its first two tracks, "She Drives Me Crazy" and "Good Thing," hit #1 on the Billboard Pop chart. FYC consisted of sing Roland Gift with a pair of former Beat members, guitarist Andy Cox and David Steele on keyboards/bass. Pegging the songs on this album into even a couple of niches is difficult because you will hear bits of everything from Motown and R&B from the past to punk and disco from the "present" in these ten songs, all fused together in a distinctive and enjoyable sound. Credit must be given to producer David Z, who had worked with Prince, Billy Idol, and others out of Minneapolis. Most of the songs were released as singles in the U.K.

Besides the first two cuts, the torch song "I'm Not the Man I Used to Be" keeps the party going on this album. But the most memorable track remains "She Drives Me Crazy," which has one of the most instantly identifiable openings of the decade and which was used to great effect in an episode of "thirtysomething" when Elliott fantasizes about what Nancy is doing after their divorce. I understand that the snare drum bit from that song is one of the most frequently sampled sounds in music history. Makes sense to me.

"The Raw & the Cooked" sold over 2 million copies and made it to the top of the album charts as well. When people talk about one hit wonders they are talking about artists where you want to have their big song but not their album. That is most certainly not the case with the Fine Young Cannibals. The only reason not to pick up this album would be because you also like some of FYC's earlier work (they only put out two albums) and you end up going with their hits collection "Finest," which has the six singles from this album.

Eat It Up!.......2002-02-28

One of the most talented groups of the eighties, FYC made only a few albums. This 1988 effort is a must, with highly original compositions similar in feeling to the great Arthur Lee and Love. Almost every song is great (although the first half is better), both for listening or dancing, particularly "She Drives Me Crazy," "Good Thing," "I'm Not the Man I Used to Be," and "Tell Me What." The emotional vocals, tight playing, and R&B/reggae beat make these completely infectious. Roland Gift has the restrained vocal passion of a Sam Cooke. Andy Cox's plucking guitar notes, superbly comped by David Steele on keyboards and some great percussive sounds, adds a unique sound to Gift's emotional vocal on "I'm Not the Man I Used To Be." On the best songs, the production is richly textured yet sparse (e.g. Al Green). For example, Steele adds some keyboard accents on "I'm Not Satisfied" then pulls off a cooking organ solo. The song, like much of the album, is imbued with R & B, reggae, funky church sounds, and James Brown passion.

"Tell Me Why" is a more mellow ska, with some nice 50's style harmonies. Track 6, "Don't Look Back," somewhat misses... it lacks the soulful hooks of the other songs but has an early 60's vocal sound and breaks into a good power guitar solo for about 10 seconds at the 2-minute mark). Overall, it's strangely likeable, as if Arthur Lee did country/Western.

"It's OK (It's Alright)" breaks into a great chorus despite it's somewhat cloying disco groove. Still, the tight work and rhythm section are impeccable and elevate the song...and again, this is great dance music! "Don't Let It Get You Down" has some annoying sound-effects over a great Prince-like falsetto by Gift. There's also a fine trumpet sound that gets into a good groove. Track 9 has a deep churchy sound (due largely to the organ), a great guitar twangling hook. Like many of their songs, it has the deep feeling of a prayer, and the yearning emotion of the best Rhythm and blues. Excellent vocals, but, towards the end of the song the overly dramatic horns and the singing veer towards self-parody (but I can imagine Elvis doing something fun with this). The last song has more strumming guitar and a big drum sound on the beat: It's a little like Talking Heads in its approach and sound, and has a taste of funk guitar.

The album fades just a bit after it's initial blast, but this is not enough to dampen my enthusiasm. Not many groups can match FYC for musical and emotional power, originality, and synthesis of R &B and reggae. It's probably one of the top 25 albums of the 1980's. Very highly recommended!

I love them........2002-01-26

Their music is so good. I have so many memories of them from my childhood. I used to love the video "She Drives Me Crazy" every time it came on MTV in the late 80's/early 90's. I remember VH1 used to play "She Drives Me Crazy" and "Good Thing" for years. They wouldn't let up and I loved that. This music is so nostaglic for me. They don't make it like this anymore. I'm so glad they put these songs out!

I'm a huge Girl Talk fan and own everything he has put out. This record is my favorite. It is glitchier than Night Ripper and far poppier than Secret Diary. If you like Night Ripper, it is a pretty safe bet you will like this.

This is a great album.I own an original vinyl of this bought brand new.The songs are a great mixture of blues and ballads,guitars and brass which was popular in the 60'sSongs also carry a message and a few deal with drug use.Kim Simmonds and Lonesome Dave went on later to form the band Foghat.

Good, But Could Be Better.......2006-02-28

If you are a Savoy Brown fan, this early configuration of the group probably suits you. The English version of Blues discovered so famously in the 60' and 70's. However, the quality of the recording mix is somewhat lacking. There are available remastered CD's with dual album titles from this group that cover this early and blues oriented Savoy Brown that is better to listen to and more adept for listening, recording and dubbing. Your money is better spent there than with these sub par vinyl copies.

Oh yeah, I feel all right with my Youlden and Simmonds!.......2004-11-10

This 1970 album represents one of the greatest triumphs in British blues history. And by triumph, I mean musical as opposed to commercial.

When this album was recorded, Savoy Brown had just finished campaigning in the States, in support of the moderately successful 'A Step Further' (# 71 on Billboard's Top 200). Their previous albums were essentially a mix of standards and various band member's compositions. However, 'Raw Sienna' features only the blues scripture of Simmonds and Youlden. And though it was hoped all prior success would be eclipsed - it was not.

For despite the opportunity to expand artistically, Youlden was not happy with the situation, feeling that the band had peaked. So, this would be his final hurrah with Savoy Brown, and arguably his greatest artistic achievement. Youlden's subsequent work with the likes of Danny Kirwan (i.e. 'You're Just a Little Cog In a Big Wheel'), though excellent, also lacked any big commercial success.

Meanwhile, Simmonds was competing with the likes of Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, along with all the other axe slingers of the day, who were in fierce competition for the dollars of guitar mad music fans. And Kim certainly delivers the goods here, while expanding upon his artistic depth and vision, by featuring an array of bravura styles and monumental tones. One listen to 'Raw Sienna' and you'll agree that Simmonds stands in peerage among Britain's elite - Marvin, Green, Clapton, Beck, Townshend, Page, Blackmore, Frampton, Richards, Taylor, and Moore, to name a few.

The prime cuts start with 'A Hard Way To Go', with Youlden's gritty vocals and Simmonds jazzy fretwork.

Next, 'That Same Feelin' starts with a horn intro supplemented by Simmonds strong riffing. Youlden careens about seemingly crazed, to be followed by Simmonds hard edged yanking over a haunting pedaled piano tone. Then Youlden scats in dementia, until Simmonds mows everyone down with shards of massive steely tones.

'Master Hare' is one of Simmonds greatest fret board achievements. With its angular scalar runs and psychedelic tones, it doesn't sound at all dated, but rather illustrates the work of a virtuoso.

The drug tome 'Needle and Spoon' comes across like an epitaph, as Youlden practically begs to be committed into the Betty Ford Clinic. And all the while, Simmonds' call-and-response fretwork is astounding, like all very Otis Rush with fish 'n chips. This tune should've been rolled out for that whole "Just Say No To Drugs" campaign. No wait, if that'd happened the whole country would still be strung out. I mean, Savoy Brown makes it all sound very cool, so pass me those works!

Say, didn't Diamond Dave cut 'A Little More Wine' for the Vegas crowd? I'm not sure. Although, you'd think that any association whatsoever with this album would help boost Roth's ailing career, all I think it did was increase this album's sales. You know, because people want to hear how it's really done. (Yes Dave, I do want fries with that. And no, I will not apologize to Eddie for you.)

On 'I'm Cryin', Youlden elicits in the listener, thoughts of deep depression and ultimately suicide. Only Simmonds' upbeat jangling finger gymnastics can get one's karma back in focus. Thanks Kim, I'll ditch the Prozac and take sixteen more bars of that funky music, white boy.

The next tune can be put on when you're with that bit'o'honey, because 'Stay While The Night Is Young' will relay your intent, while leaving nothing left open to interpretation. Get down Brown! (Ac'shully Diamond Dave covered this one, so hopefully no young love is getting spoiled out there.)

The track 'Is That So' features Simmonds jazzing it up ala T-Bone Walker, while 'When I was A Young Boy' allows us to hear Youlden at his most pensive and tender.

Now, buy this thing already and help Kim Simmonds in his declining years. Right!

Oh yeah, go see Savoy Brown soon at a concert hall near you!

The guys at the loading dock downtown have been urging me to listen to this cd since I was ten. Finally I did and I was not disappointed. I didn't even know what "blues" were. I kept thinking "Blues Clues". Imagine dark, soft, your lover, fine wine, good cough syrup, great smoke; imagine forever. No recording will take you there like this one will. John 10:16. This cd is 16 years older than me, and though clearly ancient, it's immeasurably urgent. The cd you would take with you if "Lost". This stuff will walk with you forever. I almost can't believe it. Thanks you guys at the loading dock. Really thanks.

Another Step Furthur!.......2003-09-20

With the release of their fifth album, Savoy Brown starts hitting their stride. Raw Sienna is the first of three masterpieces in a row for Kim Simmonds and company, as well as Chris Youlden's finest hour with the band. (So fine, in fact, that he would leave the band soon after for his own solo career.) He and Kim would continue their experiments, begun on the previous album A Step Furthur, with horns and orchestration, and thus continue to expand the vocabulary of blues/rock. Some tracks, such as "Needle and Spoon," swing as well as any produced by jazzman Dave Brubeck, with intense lyrics that undercut the nonstop groove with pain. (Does anyone out there really think this is a prodrug song? Listen again: "You married to H, you know you married for life!") "Hard Way to Go" and "A Little More Wine" would deservedly become concert staples, while "Stay While the Night is Young" finds Youlden at his most romantic and tender. Kim was also beginning to compose some of the most eloquent instrumentals in rock: "That Same Feelin'" continues the 1960's-adventure-movie-soundtrack feel of "Waiting in the Bamboo Grove" from A Step Furthur, while "Is That So" foreshadows the deep introspection of Savoy's next masterpiece, Looking In. Most bands would be lucky to have one album half as good as Raw Sienna; the fact that Savoy Brown climbed so many peaks in their illustrious career shows the desire and the determination of leader Kim Simmonds to constantly reinvent and challange both himself and his fellow musicians.

On Sea Music, former Del Fuegos frontman turned kid's music songster Dan Zanes performs a set of old sea shanties in a rough-hewn but charming manner. He takes songs that have been worn smooth from constant use, artfully scuffs them up, and restores them to their former "ragged but right" glory. His performance of "Shenandoah," for example, features some fine Leadbelly-style 12-string guitar picking and an anguished vocal that almost erases the memory of the polite, formal choral arrangements that usually smother the song. And his "Sloop John B" sails along on jaunty banjos and mandolins rather than the slick harmonies of the Beach Boys' version. These shanties were originally created by sailors as work songs, and consequently they have choruses that are perfect for singing along. Zanes is joined on many tracks by an enthusiastic chorus of kids who are obviously having a wonderful time belting out the sometimes salty lyrics. As with all of Zanes's recordings for children, adults are likely to find themselves listening to this wonderful music even when the kids aren't underfoot. --Michael John Simmons

My personal favorite of DZ's "kids" records.

This one *is* great for sing-alongs with the kids, but is a fine old timey record of sea songs that can be enjoyed by anyone. Loose-limbed versions of "Shenendoah", "Sloop John B" and "Cape Cod Girls" are fine and fun.

"Strike The Bell", "Blow Ye Winds", "Leaving of Liverpool" and others are fun sing-alongs as well as good history lessons. My 3.5 year-old and I enjoy this record equally.

It's particularly nice that Zanes' website has the lyrics AND chords -- really helps extend the listening and playing pleasure. I also appreciate that DZ doesn't dumb down the music for kids at all -- you get a real feel of the folk tradition of handmade music here.

for a fun cd of classic sea shanties, and a kids' cd that you won't get sick of, this is the one. we've given this to many kids (2 and up) and all parents have been very thankful! we've had it for 2 yrs. and we listen to it all the time.

I like anything to do with the sea and I bought this CD on the strength of the glowing reviews. Having lived in a port city in England that hosts an annual Sea Shanty festival, I was fortunate to hear some of the best shanty singers around. I had high expectations for Dan Zales and was sorely let down. The music is basic and unpolished, which should be a good thing. Shanties are supposed to be raw, gutsy. But the quality of the music here is downright amateurish -- merely a sing-a-long with the children in the kitchen. I wanted more for my money.

Great CD for kids and adults.......2006-03-29

I played this CD in the car while taking my great granddaughter (8 mos) to work yesterday. The songs were so irresitable I found myself singing along, even with chanties I'd not heard before. Then, from the back seat, I heard loud cooing and chortling noises in a little voice. Morgan was singing along too. Guess this CD is a hit with everyone.

Ignore the low fidelity of this 26-track compendium, and you have one of the most interesting gospel compilations ever released. Most of these songs were recorded among a variety of "race" labels between 1926 and 1936, mostly for Paramount and Vocalion. Copious liner notes provide the needed details for each track, along with an essay by label chief/folk legend John Fahey. Soundwise, some of these tunes are indeed primitive--there are more hisses and pops than a Mongolian BBQ. But underneath the surface noises, in tracks by Elder J.J. Hadley (a.k.a. Charley Patton), Washington White (a.k.a. Bukka White), and Blind Roosevelt Graves, there's something magical. Apparently, '26 to '36 saw a newfound interest in sacred street singers that, in turn, inspired record labels to hire blues artists to work under aliases. Whatever the motivation, these tracks are testimonies to a nearly lost era of great musicianship. --Jason Verlinde

Albums like this make me feel great and really bummed out at the same time. Great because this music is as pure, raw and unpop as you can get, just amazingly real, but bummed because real music like this is gone and dead. At least we have these records of a time before proffesionalism and corporations destroyed music (and everyother art form).
I don't beleive in god or religion, but this is still one of my fave cds, heck if there was music like this in churches nowadays, i'd be going to church all the time. So don't let the term Gospel turn you off, this doesn't sound like Gospel, it's only gospel cause they mention jesus once and a while.

The music's great, find better copies of the 78s to transfer.......2002-03-28

Obviously the music presented here is really great. My only beef is the really poor condition of some of the 78s used. I know this stuff is really rare, but I bet there are cleaner copies of these records out there. Is it supposed to be important that these are John Fahey's 78s? It's not to me. I don't have much music of this type, but I found a much cleaner copy of the Jaybird Coleman track on an old Biograph LP called "This Old World's In A Hell Of A Fix." Even dubbing the version off this LP would have been better that the severely damaged copy of the 78 used for this CD. I wonder if their Charley Patton CD box set was also produced with poor condition 78s like these?

Another Outstanding Revenant Compilation.......2001-08-18

Revenant has issued some of the best old music compilations: Dock Boggs' "Country Blues," the Stanley Brothers' first recordings, the Anthology of American Folk Music Vol. 4 (not to mention the upcoming super-definitive collection of Charley Patton recordings: "Screamin' and Hollerin' the Blues). Great, obscure music, and inventive, eye-catching packaging.

This compilation is no exception. This is the most astounding collection of old-time gospel and sacred music ever compiled. From the bone-shattering sacred songs of Charley Patton (as the Elder J.J. Hadley) to the sublime Blind Roosevelt Graves to the strange Rev. I. B. Ware.....there is simply no weak tune here. The title isn't misleading: this is as raw as you can get. Sanctified and rockin' and spine-tingling, this is simply one great album!

I did. If this one might be better than "The Half Ain't Never Been Told" then it must be essential. It is. This disc will snap your head back. Powerful no nonsense music. American roots music, oh baby that's one thing we did absolutely right.

Slim's debut is his best album - R.I.P.......2007-05-12

The years is 1998 and No Limit is the sound of the south pumping out 2-3 cd's a month and Soulja Slim's time came. As far as quality, like most of the No Limit albums I have (about 20), its a 4 star album, probably in the upper half of the labels albums that I own. Packed with songs and label mates as guests,(like all No Limit albums of the time), Slim delivers 20 songs for you. Guests are on 15 of the 20 songs so you don't get a ton of Slim. 3 songs I skip, 4-7 are ok, the rest are good - a few being real good. Production is nice like most of the No Limit albums that the Beats By the Pound Crew do. Carlos Stephens and KLC each do 6 songs, Craig B does 4 songs, Mo B Dick & O'Dell each do 2 songs and DJ Darryl does 1 song.

A few notches above the average for No Limit.......2007-01-16

No Limit albums are like baseball cards. They're mostly interchangeable, but once you buy your first, a funny urge to collect them all wells up in the back of your skull. Of course, music as pure product has it's own issues. I wouldn't bother reviewing most of the No Limit output from the late nineties, simply because I doubt I could string enough words together to make it worthwhile. "Give It To 'Em Raw" stands a bit above it's peers. Sure, Beats By The Pound handles full album production, and yes, the booklet is filled with advertisements for upcoming discs. It has a standard Pen & Pixel cover, and the usual filler that clogged all rap albums at the time is present. The difference is Soulja Slim buried some gems here amongst the rubble, and even if Southern rap doesn't appeal to you, this is one record from below the Mason-Dixon Line that might be worth a spin or two.

"You Got It (II)" has those really whiny synths that Dr. Dre used to great effect on "Efil4Zaggin". Now, BBTP isn't Dre by any stretch, but they manage to conjure the same hazy menace. In fact, the thickness of Slim's accent, the fact that most of us Yanks won't be able to catch every word he says, makes it all the more unsettling. Another standout is "Anything", with Slim and Mia X trading sex rhymes over a dark bass-and-synth driven beat. "Law Brekaz" is downright claustrophobic, and Slim's paranoia about being robbed or killed is so palpable it could ride shogtun with "My Mind's Playing Tricks on Me". Sadly, paranoia is occasionally justified, as Slim was murdered just a few years after "Give It To 'Em Raw" dropped. It's hard to keep that out of your mind even on the lighter tracks, like the Parliament derivative "No Limit Party". No less than sixteen emcees (and that's being kind to some of these cats) tear through eight bars apiece in about five minutes. Works perfect as a closer.

There is a lot of midi-sounding junk. Most of the lyrics outside the highlighted tracks tend toward the "streets are dangerous/stay strapped/dealing/using/I'm negative because of my screwed up childhood" variety. Public Enemy or Main Source this isn't. However, I'd gladly take negative mental baggage over mindless boasting of material goods (Baby, I'm looking atchoo) any day. $20 bucks for a used disc is ridiculous, so try rooting around at your friendly neighborhood flea markets. RIP Soulja Slim. Thanks for the music.

one of the tighter no limit cds from its era, soulja slim was one of the best rappers master p ever signed up there with c murder,silkk,mac,and mr.serv on,this cd is one to pick up, check out the following songs, after you listen to these i think you either will agree, or buy the album. 1.from what i was told, 2.street life,7.head buster,8.me and my cousin,12.imagine,14.wootay,18.hustlin is a habit,20. n.l. party, street life is the best song on the cd though

Master P didn't know who he had at the time until it was to late for P to sign him to the label in 01'. I knew of Soulja before this album came out and so naturally I had to get this album. Soulja's songs were different from the No Limit roster it wasn't the same i'm a soulja line, he translated the streets in real time talk and didn't hold nothing back. When C-Murder and Mac appeared on this album it was bananas. You could have had an instant group.
