More comedy monologue than musical performance, Bea Arthur's one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends collects memories from the silver-haired star's life on Broadway (Fiddler on the Roof, Mame, The Threepenny Opera) and television (Maude, The Golden Girls).
"I wanted to see if I had the guts to just come and be myself," Arthur says in this performance recorded in front of a live audience in December 2001. Alongside co-creator and pianist Billy Goldenberg, she offers wry and often funny anecdotes about her career and the people she's worked with (Angela Lansbury, Pia Zadora). When she does sing ... well, even decades ago Arthur didn't have a beautiful voice, but she's well-suited to the comedy songs. And her versions of Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny" and Goldenberg's own "Fifty Percent"--while they won't make anyone forget Lotte Lenya or Dorothy Loudon--are effective in their own right. Bea Arthur on Broadway is definitely more Bea than Broadway, but it's a career well worth remembering. --David Horiuchi

And Then There's BEA!.......2007-01-20
Thank goodness this is available on CD. I saw the show twice in Manhattan and once in P-town MA. She is an American treasure. What's nice is that you don't need to have had seen the live performance to enjoy this CD. (Though I'd love to have it on DVD.) Just Bea, Billy, a piano and yet so much more!!!!!
Golden Girl Shines Brightly.......2005-10-21
For anyone who has ever laughed as Bea Arthur deftly put people in their place with her lightning quick wit as Dorothy on the "Golden Girls", they will not be disappointed with this CD. Arthur, some 9 years after leaving the small screen, returns triumphantly to her professional roots, the stage, and does not disappoint. Mixing antedotal stories with classic songs, all to the accompianment of Billy Goldenburg, Arthur weaves her life in a brillant 90 minute tapestry so that the listener regrets ever reaching the end. Anyone who has ever seen Arthur perform on stage, or as Maude or Dorothy, they will not regret purchasing this CD. For that rare minority of people who have not have the privilage of seeing Arthur previously should find out what they have been missing of this American icon.
Alive and Unforgettable.......2004-11-21
Bea Arthur. Nearing 80. And yet, her continuing vitality is blatantly obvious in this live recording. I will tell you this--I bought this disc with no expectations whatsoever. I like Golden Girls as much as the next chap, and I was slightly curious about what Bea had become.
The simple truth was that I was stunned. Completely stunned. Again, this sounds as the same, alive, malicious woman who portrayed those "affirmative women" on TV (per her own words). She mocks her own voice, recalling the humiliation of being mistaken for the man of the house through the phone ... and some--who buy this disk with the intent of getting a faultless musical performance--might agree (and according to some reviews her, HAVE agreed) that her voice is perhaps too deep, too cutting, not pure enough. But this is NOT (and I stress it) a musical performance per se, it is not a perfectly rounded voice singing perfect standards.
What this disc is? A drama performance. The songs are intermissed with speech interludes, during which Bea narrates anecdotes from her past experience as an actress--and that's is PRECISELY what is MAGIC. You feel as though she's inviting you to witness the high points of her life, and it's a very nice place. The songs, seem alive as rarely before, because they are performed. She renders them with life, and make the most of her abilities.
I really appreciated some of the smaller things. You get to recognize her trademark, slightly embarassed, `You know' ... She'll make you laugh with good natured reminiscence ("A Mother's Ingenuity"!); some of the songs are delightfully imperfect, (I learned to love the half-sung/half-spoken "What Do You Start" ...), some others are wonderfully dynamic ("What Can You Get a Nudist For Her Birthday?", "Threepenny Opera/Pirate Jenny" ...), but all are very enjoyable ...
Be it "Isn't He Adorable?" or "If I Can't Sell It, I'll Keep Sittin' on It" ... every track on this disc will have you fondly reminisce or curiously discover the career of one helluva woman.
You really can't be disappointed. I promise.
If only we could have a visual as well!
A trip down memory lane..........2003-10-19
Bea Arthur, one of the finest performers of her time.
Bea is most known for her role on the sitcoms Golden Girls and Maude, but she's done so much theater work as well.
She was in the cast of the original U.S production of "Threepenny Opera" starring Lotta Lenya, and in the original cast of "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Mame". But Bea started her theater career in a show called "The Shoestring Revue".
Bea stoled the scene every night when she performed as yente the Matcmaker on "Fiddler On The Roof" and she also got a hole lot of response as Vera Charles on "Mame", starring Angela Lansbury. In this live performence Bea performs a collection of songs chosen by herself, such as, "Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Isn't He Adorable", "Fifty Percent" and her theme song from Mame "The Man In The Moon". Bea is absolutely one of our time finest performers, with her witty sence of knowledge and her indefiable voice she has establised herself as a broadway legend, alongside Judy Garland, Elaine Stritch, Mary Martin. She is one of the last broadway female legends alive. And still going strong, Bea is rounding 80, but you wouldn't notice.
Do yourself a favour and take a trip down down memory lane, it's your chance to hang out with the last female broadway legend around.
A Truly Remarkable Accomplishment.......2003-06-16
As a huge fan of Bea Arthur's, I was very excited when I heard she would return to Broadway to do a one-woman show. Not since winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "Mame" has Bea Arthur been on stage. Well, what a way to follow up! This cd (which was recorded during a live performance) Bea gives fans an intimate look into her show business life. The stories are very funny and touching, and the songs (which Bea picked out herself) are fun, beautiful, and magical. A favorite part of this cd for me, is when Bea talks about her days on TV. She was the star of two very successful and groundbreaking sitcoms, "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" I am a huge fan of "The Golden Girls" and Bea's character Dorothy was always my favorite. This cd is a must for any Bea Arthur fan, but the appeal of this amazing show goes beyond her hardcore fans. Any fan of classic Broadway and cabaret songs will love this cd. This is one of the favorite cds I own, and should be treasured by more people. And finally, as a sidenote, Bea's one-woman show was nominated for a Tony Award in 2001 in the category of Best Special Theatrical Event.

Album Description
Out of print in the U.S.! Grace Jones' flamboyant outfits and statuesque looks made her one of the most unforgettable characters to emerge from New York in the late '70s. Teaming the singer/model with Chic mainman Nile Rodgers was a musical marriage made in heaven. Rodgers' sleek and funky production wrapped around Jones' deadpan and powerful delivery created some of the most memorable music of her career. With former Camera Club leader Bruce Woolley on keyboards and songwriting chores, this was a perfect blend of New York sass and New Wave sauce. 10 tracks including 'I'm Not Perfect (But I'm Perfect For You)'. EMI.

AMAZING.......2007-06-25
IMO This is one if Graces' Best albums. She for once on all her CD's sings every song with no chanting, talking (Except for Beverly Hills) or yelling! It has some great music to go with it and provide many life anthems like Scary but Fun.
Recommended tracks:
I'm not perfect
Hollywood Liar
Scary But Fun
Barefoot in beverly hills
Victor should have been a Jazz musician
Not her best work.......2006-08-16
I have tried to like this album but it just doesn't work for me. It simply does not compare to Warm Leatherette and Nightclubbing. It lacks the funk element of Sly and Robbie and the songs themselves are just too ordinary for Grace Jones. The artwork is very creative, like all of the GJ albums. 'I'm Not Perfect' is probably the best song on the album. Information is speculating on the internet that something new is in the works for 2007. Let's hope so.
A HIDDEN GEM.......2005-10-02
From its striking cover to the content this really is a great album. with songs such as "victor was a jazz musician", which evokes a feeling of a smokey jazz club, with grace dimly lit on stage to "still walking barefoot" where one can almost see grace doing whats shes singing about. Nile Rodgers has really given the listener a multifaceted album with grace going all directions. this album gives us another view into the enigma that is grace jones, its just a shame that shes not singing anymore

Customer Reviews:
Has some nice moments........2007-03-27
I wish people would get their facts straight.Actually it was Robben Ford's explosive soloing on Joni Mitchells song "In France They Kiss On Main Street" (from "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns") that turned heads in his direction NOT this album.
I first heard this record by means of Alexis Korners superb UK radio programme in the 1970s.
It has some great moments ("Tee Time For Eric" & "Magic Sam") but as is the case for 70s jazz fusion albums some of the songs tend to wander aimlessly and are just an excuse to egotrip.
Robben's a great musician but he isn't an original. He comes distinctly from the Mike Bloomfield school of Blues guitar via a stint with Miles Davis (from whom he picked up alot of his free form ideas).
"Talk To Your Daughter" was a far more consistant album than this one.
Beware of haters!!.......2007-03-07
I've read some pretty narrow minded reviews of Robben Ford's official debut LP (this has been reissued on CD finally). Don't be fooled by the haters. GET THIS CD IF YOU LIKE ROBBEN FORD PERIOD!!! Not owning "The Inside Story" is like calling yourself a Van Halen fan and not owning Van Halen I & II!
Ever since Siskel & Ebert, everyone thinks they are a critic. In 1979, all records sounded like this (or tried to). Sure there are elements that scream 80s like the Dyno-My-Piano Rhodes played by Russ Ferrante on this record, but nothing makes it sound dated. Any review that you read which suggests this LP sounds dated is bull. Any such remark would be overly critical and useless because it doesn't take into account what technology was available at the time. The production by the great Steve Cropper is tasteful and very palatable. So what is wrong with that?
The best compositions on this CD are "Magic Sam," "Far Away," "Tee Time For Eric," and "There's No One Else." Robben's playing is very soulful and unexpected. This is a very good CD that won Robben Ford legions of fans world wide.
Warning: great guitar but overly slick production.......2006-09-28
Don't get me wrong, Robben Ford is one of my favorite players, but to my ears, his playing on this is boxed in by the dated, slickly produced "LA" sound that, like a straightjacket, never lets the guitar parts breathe. Organic and soulful it ain't. If your taste runs to mainstream rather than fusion jazz-- that is, you prefer the sound of acoustic piano and Hammond B3 over synths and plastic -sounding "keyboards", you may prefer to smaple some other title such as "Handfull of Blues". If you like Yellowjackets, mid to late Steely Dan,Weather Report, etc., you'll probably love this. Call me a purist, but I don't connect emotionally with this at all, and the guitar playing sure ain't to blame!!!!!!
buy it while it's still available at any price..........2005-01-11
this album is unbelieveably great. i love every song which is a rare occurence. even the two tracks with vocals are very well done. i bought this about the same time i bought "jungle fever" by neil larson and they remain 2 of my very favorite albums.
It doesn't get any better than this........2004-09-13
More so even than Larry Carlton, Robben Ford blazed the guitar trail with a unique style in the late 1970's which became known as the "LA" sound. It was true jazz fusion: Really complex and innovative harmonic ideas fused with rock and blues power. If you want to know where it started, listen to this album. Robben plays so well, that if you're a guitar player, you'll be heading to the woodshed, fast! And to top it off, you get some great blues ("North Carolina") as well. This album is so good, I'd give it ten stars!

Customer Reviews:
Great album!!!.......2006-06-19
Although I consider that the albums made is her island period (more precisely with Sly and Robbie) is the best of Grace Jones, her two last albums were something really different and something quite good too. On this album it's made quite clear from he start that Grace is no more mumbling. The sounds is a lot more 80`s than her others album and a lot more personal which make it quite appealing. The production is top notch... It's different all right but not a total departure from her island period; her extravagant personality is still around, it's pop and dance all the way... So it should please every fans of her and even attrack some new listeners.
I`M NOT PERFECT: One of the very best tracks on the album... It's a perfect pop number and Grace Vocals are amazing! You need to dance, sing or shout along Jones for sure.
HOLLYWOOD LIAR: Great track, get stuck in my mind for sure each time I listen to it... The tune is ordinary at the start but she the French lyrics make their entrance it became something else. And it's quite good, one of my favorite.
CHAN HITCHHIKES TO SHANGHAI: Sounds 80`s but has a upright beat which make it a nice piece of pop but somehow gets repetitive.
VICTOR: Great, simply stunning... You get stuck in some kind of trance when you listen to victor; it's actually one of the best tracks she ever recorded in her entire career. The vocals of Grace are once again amazing, a more jazzy, late night style which work quite well.
PARTY GIRL: Danceable track, quite personal for Jones. But really nothing shine in the song. I can't understand why this track was chosen for a single.
CRUSH: Imaginative and daring. It has a special feel that Grace never tried before. It's a great song in a more rock style.
BAREFOOT IN BEVERLY HILLS: Unoriginal, stands out as the only bad track of the album. Really nothing interesting in the track; the vocals are flat, the musical unimaginative and the sound is 80.
SCARY BUT FUN: Great, great... So original and it delivers a beautiful message thru this song; taking chances on the life you've won.
WHITE COLLAR CRIME: Wow, the stand out of this album must be the last two tracks... This one is absolutely amazingly gorgeous... Grace sings like she never sings before. Seriously she get that note at the end of the song, it's incredible.
INSIDE STORY: This one is a gem. Although it's not the style that Grace is used to it became one of the great tracks on Inside Story. I love the lyrics...
Altought I considered it not her best album, inside story is still above today's music and by far. Grace is emotional, direct, sure and strange... That what's makes this album work so well... Have a try if you find it somewhere, you won`t regret it!!!
IMO her worst album.......2005-06-07
A couple of years ago I purchased this at an online auction because after having all of her Island albums which are classics, I had to get all of the others.
This one stuck out as the only bad album she did, in my opinion.
The sound is very thin, very 80s, but mostly the tracks are annoying, very repetitive and what's worst, the sound pretty much the same. The choruses are the parts that stick out as just plain bad, kinda like they started to write the music for the songs by trying to make the melody for them, but they are just bad.
Bulletproof heart on the other hand, her other Manhattan album, done 3 years after this one, is a jem of an album, with much more texture, more melody, tunes that sound very different from the others.
If you need to get this, don't pay too much.
1986 Studio Album.......2005-02-04
This 1986 studio effort from the outrageous Diva, Grace Jones, marked her debut on the Manhatten label and saw her immediately teamed with hot R&B master, Nile Rodgers, one half of the 1970's disco group, Chic, and who had produced classics for the likes of Soul music legend Diana Ross and the Queen of Pop, Madonna. Allegedly Nile Rodgers and Grace Jones did not get on at all well and the recording sessions for Inside Story were a little intense.
Following on from her Reggae/Funk/Rock/New Wave infused albums such as the excellent Warm Leatherette (1980) and the critically-acclaimed Nightclubbing (1981), Inside Story (1986) divulged Jones into a far more commercial sound. Inside Story was a mixed concoction of Pop/Dance/Funk/R&B with subtle hints of jazz on one particularly awful track, Victor Should Have Been A Jazz Muscian.
I'm Not Perfect (But I'm Perfect For You)was the premiere single. Fairly infectious, the track showcased Jones raw (and rather narrow) vocal style than most of her previous singles had where she seemingly scowled through the lyrics as opposed to actually singing. I'm Not Perfect went onto become one of her biggest hits in the States whilst crawling quietly into the lower reaches of the U.K Top 75.
Hollywood Liar continues the already tried and tested formula of I'm Not Perfect. The limitations of her thin vocals do show up on this particular track but somehow it manages to redeem itself and becomes quite infectious after a couple of listens.
The atmospheric and driving Chan Hitchikes To Shanghai is far better. Jones inserts herself effectivley into the sparse production and this scores as one of the more favourable album tracks.
The painfully dated Victor Should Have Been A Jazz Muscian, contains a rather flat vocal performance that simply lacks the spark to ignite this ponderous effort. Curiously this was another track to be swiped from the album and lifted as a single though unsurprisingly sank without trace.
More upbeat was Party Girl, a song that was undoubtedly written especially for and about Grace Jones. Nile Rodgers thoughts and perceptions of Grace Jones are reflected on recordings such as Party Girl which with its breezy, inventive musical arrangements, emerges as another catchy number. Party Girl was also released as a single though it too rapidly slid into the dumper.
The Pop/Light Rock tone of Crush swerves into more commercial terriotry though more bland and forgetable is the unimaginative Barefoof In Beverley Hills.
Jones delivers a nice, breathy and surprisingly seamless performance on the mellow, late night Pop/R&B track, Scary But Fun, another song that was something of a personal reflection. After all Grace Jones image was all about being scary but through her music she got occasional chances to show off her more fun side albeit in the most weird, off-the-wall manner - you have to view her extraordinary A One Man Show (1982) to know what I mean!
White Collar Crime continues the bubbling formula of commercial flavoured Pop/R&B where Jones delivers a rich and compelling performance. Incidentally White Collar Crime sounds vaguely similar to her 1985 Trevor Horn produced classic, Slave To The Rhythm.
The title track, Inside Story, closes the album on a high. With a spiritual and poignant edge, this track does emerge as another of the projects highlights.
Not one of her best albums, nor was it a great commercial success though this remains one of her most commercially visible albums.
Ian Phillips
She could get away with murder! .......2004-12-12
I actually find it a little amusing that Grace's Island records are considered the best, when my two favorite records are "Inside Story" and "Bulletproof Heart." Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore "Warm Leatherette", "Nightclubbing" and "Living My Life" but I also consider "Inside Story" and "Bulletproof Heart" to be her most personal to date, the reason is simple, on the two aforementioned albums Grace had a lot more room to develop and space to find her own sound through song writing and eventually co-producing the albums.
Inside Story followed after her powerhouse single "Slave to the Rhythm" and it was something new, the first single is the infectious "I'm Not Perfect (But I'm Perfect For You)" which is a very catchy tune, "Victor Should Have Been a Jazz Musician" is the second single and it was something completely new for Grace... the theme: Jazz. The song is extremely good, the sound, the vocal and the production; I really consider this a Grace Jones classic. Besides the two main singles "Inside Story" has many shining moments like the electro-dance tune of "Party Girl" and "Crush" to the mind-blowing struggle of "White Collar Crime." A great example the personal influence is the song "Scary But Fun" in which Grace shares her near-death experience while water-skiing; the song is about life, taking chances and living without any regrets, most personal indeed.
Even the most pessimistic reviewer can't deny a fate of pasture when it comes to songs like "Barefoot in Beverly Hills" which is a lush almost new-age like tune, or even the cheesy story-line of Chan's journey to Shanghai in "Chan Hitchhikes to Shanghai" most likely to be ignored? I think not.
When it all comes down to it "Inside Story" just might be her most appealing piece of work; while "Portfolio" created the basic rhythm of Jones' structure "Inside Story" evolved the fast rhythm of Grace's demonic charge, stunning; more than anything and most unlikely to ever be matched. EMI issued two of Grace's finest work in 2004, Besides this one they reissued Bulletproof Heart as well.
So now there's no excuse for not getting Inside Story.
Cool sounds, hot emotions!.......2004-01-27
The original press pack for this album included a fake-biography playing with all the myths Grace Jones was surrounded by at that time. It's an ironical dismantling of her larger-than-life persona, preparing the fans to experience the "real" Grace Jones. It's only consequent that the first, phantastic single from this album was called "I'm not perfect - but I'm perfect for you".
"Inside Story" probably is the most personal and most beautiful album Grace has ever recorded. Sit back, relax and enjoy a trip from the church service in Spanishtown, Jamaica to Rodeo Drive Pedicure!

Album Description
When you think of Grobschnitt, you think of stage shows lasting up to four hours and of Solar Music, a happening that went on for sometimes upwards of 60 minutes. Grobschnitt was founded in 1970 and was one of the first acts on the legendary German `Brain' label. They existed for 19 years, played 1,356 shows and released 14 albums. From records like Rockpommels Land (´77), Solar Music (´78) and Illegal (´81), they sold more than 100,000 units each - a figure that was very impressive for a German band of that time. All of these records are considered Krautrock classics today. The double, remastered CD, The International Story, gives an overview from 1971 to 1981, including a complete live recording of Solar Music and other tracks from the previously mentioned releases, as well as other Grobschnitt classics, most of which are rare live recordings.
Customer Reviews:
A live "best of" that satisfies even those that are not big Krautrock lovers..........2007-01-19
...and that would be me. Oh, I've listened to some Eloy (good Grobschnitt comparison) and others, but I'm not a big fan...so keep that in mind while reading along here. I like this album, though, for a few good reasons: The vocals (mostly English lyrics) are sung well with a slight accent, the dual guitarists are very good, and there are plenty of lush symphonic prog passages (and close to 160 minutes of music!). There is a theatrical, clownish side to some of their songs at times (think Nektar's "Down to Earth" cd), but those tend to be more the exception than the norm. Nice overview of early 70's thru early 80's output - earlier stuff probably appealing more to seasoned prog lovers, while later stuff more for prog-pop enthusiasts. The first disc includes the 57-minute version of "Solar Music", along with two other epics that are equally enjoyable. The second disc starts out with 27 minutes of some excellent samples from the wonderful "Rockpommel's Land" cd, but the 1980's stuff that completes that disc is pretty good too. These cds come in an attractive digipack with an informational 16-page booklet about this band (who's name literally means "rough cut"). Worthy.
I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8.6/10; Performance = 9/10; Production = 9/10; CD length = 10/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.9 ("4-1/2 stars")

Album Description
First released in the United States in 1999 but with insufficient mastering quality, Good Morning Story was the first time Czukay used an ordinary sampler for his compositions. Joined by vocalist U-She, Czukay's compositions and sounds became more sharp and succinct, resulting in an avant-garde album that stands up to many of today's releases.
As a co-founder of German experimental outfit Can, Czukay helped pave the way for avant-garde and electronic music. Czukay's innovations, as heard on Good Morning Story, are the foundation for the still blossoming electronic scene. This definitive Revisited reissue contains the original recording digitally remastered from the original tapes, including bonus track, new liner notes by Holger and is housed in deluxe digipak format with the original artwork.
