The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars Travelling Wilbury's Review.......2007-07-17

CD of excellent quality -- additional tracks are a real value add. The DVD is very well done. It gives an excellent history of the Travelling Wilbury's and included a nice tribute to Roy Orbison

5 out of 5 stars Hard not to like.......2007-07-16

The boys should have stopped after Roy died. Still there is some excellent work put forth on the second disk and the video documentary was good to see (once). All things said; the first disk is masterful.

5 out of 5 stars Traveling Wilburys CD/DVD.......2007-07-16

My husband had wanted this CD for years, but I had been unable to find it since it had been out of print for so long. He was so surprised when I gave it to him, and absolutely loves it. The quality is excellant and of course so is the music! We shared it with friends and they were all going to go out and get themselves a copy as well.

5 out of 5 stars Relax and Enjoy - It IS about the Music!.......2007-07-16

Don't listen to the hype or to the critics. When you look at Rock's recorded history (sorry 'bout that) the names behind the Wilburys didn't produce a lot of bad music. What they produced was frequently the best of the moment and every once in a while, they gave us nearly timeless music. And both of the albums in this 3 disk set give us that gift: a place and images in time and something timeless. Watch the train riding video and imagine Roy in that rocking chair. Whatever other deficiencies there are on the DVD, and there are some: spotty sound, jumpy shots and cuts, and no few almost corny 80's touches, it is worth the journey to get on that train.

Yea, everyone says album 1 is the best with Roy Orbison and that may be true but number three (two) is so close I think it is a wash. I grew with three of these guys. They grew up with me. Two came along later and belonged to the group regardless of age. It was and is the music that binds them together. It is the music that was the heart of a friendship. It was never about fame or their names or what could have been and were in other places and times, colossal ego clashes. When the Wilburys gathered, it was all about the music. Thank God.

Listen. Watch. Enjoy. It's not perfect but that's a tough label to get. The Traveling Wilburys set is close enough for me.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sounds!!!!!.......2007-07-15

Can't get enough of this collaberation of music greats! Being that I'm from that "era", it's just wonderful to hear Roy & George again, along with the others -- Petty, Dylan, & Lynne. The music is so fun to listen to & timeless!!! You'll not be sorry buying this amazing CD set!

Few bands of the 1960s retained as much a sense of the roots of rock and roll as did Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their music is rife with country, rockabilly, and R&B influences, a combination that produced several hit singles--most of which are present on this collection. These include "I Heard It through the Grapevine," "Lodi," "Up Around the B ," "Who'll Stop the Rain," and of course "Bad Moon Rising." This is an excellent greatest-hits collection, and a perfect introduction to the music of a band that has been enduringly influential. --Genevieve Williams

listening to this CD makes you realize how great john fogerty was back in the day. great songs, great sound.

I've been listening to this CD for 2 weeks in my car on the way to work.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack of an era.......2007-06-15

This is an excellent compilation of CCR's tunes from the late 60s, early 70s. There's a reason why Credence tunes kept popping up in movies and commercials. It's great music and evocative of the era from which it comes. No need for me to review the individual tunes; anybody with a radio has head most of them. A must-have for any music fan.

Amazon.com essential recording

Proving yet again their willingness to dice 'n' slice their burgeoning legacy into new--if not exactly fresh--product, the Fab Four Minus One have released this single-disc compendium of their No. 1 hits. Though obviously superfluous to the faithful (who may also find themselves quibbling over the precise definition of "No. 1 hit" and the exclusion of seeming contenders like "Please Please Me" and "Strawberry Fields"), newly arrived visitors from the Pleiades star cluster and other neophytes will find it a concise and generous (nearly 80 minutes) single-disc introduction to the band's career-spanning, unparalleled dominance of pop music in the 1960s. But beyond being a mere trophy case of commercial success (and it won't be hard to find critics who'll argue that these singles aren't even the band's best work), it's also a Cliff's Notes take on a remarkable seven-year run of musical evolution, one that stretches from the neo-skiffle of "Love Me Do" through a remarkable synthesis of R&B, rockabilly, Tin Pan Alley, gospel, country, and classical that still defies efforts to effectively deconstruct it. This is the pop monument equivalent of the '27 Yankees and '90s Bulls; it's every bit as obvious and dominating--and just as essential. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars As good as you think it is.......2007-07-08

John, Paul, George, and Ringo. If this phrase does not move you then you should go back to your George Michael videos and prey he'll become heterosexual! This is everything that you remember from the Beatles.

5 out of 5 stars great collection.......2007-07-06

Beatles 1 is a good collection of the Beatles #1 hit singles. Perfect for the casual Beatles fan or for someone just being introduced to the Beatles music for the first time. If you are interested in hearing more Beatles music, collect their albums. Depending on your taste, you can get their early 60s stuff or their late 60s stuff or both time periods. Personally, I enjoy their early 60s stuff more than their late 60s stuff and have a collection of their early 60s albums.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of past music.......2007-06-27

I guess this is a CD of their best songs and is well worth buying. Now I have a tape and CD of their music and could not be happier.

5 out of 5 stars I'm in love with the Beatles, and I feel fine.......2007-06-18

"Beatles 1" is a great album. I could leave it at that, but I think I would just be stating the obvious, so I will give you a more in depth look.

You are probably aware, but just in case you don't know by now, "Beatles 1' is chronologically organized using songs that reached number one in the United States and/or the United Kingdom. Even though that means that some of your favorite songs won't be on here, and even some number ones will not make it (Strawberry Fields Forever, Please Please Me), it is still an exceptional collection of music that very few bands in history could ever dream of putting together. From "Love Me Do" to "The Long And Winding Road," this album is fantastic. While "Beatles 1" does have some weak spots, even those songs are far above the best of most other bands.

All in all, I have to say that If you are new to The Beatles, then you should get this album in a heartbeat. However, if you own a lot of Beatles music, then you probably shouldn't buy this album, unless you really want to here the digitally Remastered quality, because you probably will already know most of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-06-13

All of the classic tunes are here. What's even better is that they are in chronological order. You can listen to this album from start to finish and get a glimpse into how the Beatles evolved over the years they were together. A must have for any fan of classic music. The Beatles have truly stood the test of time and this album is proof.

5 out of 5 stars Their best in 20 years.......2007-07-13

The Scorpions have joined Iron Maiden as 2 of the old groups to put forth a great effort on their latest release. I haven't been this impressed with a Scorpions cd since the mid to late 80's. Klaus' voice sounds incredible, and the lyrics and music are top notch. There is a reason why people are still buying this music, because todays rock bands have forgotten about the guitar as a fundamental instrument. If you're a fan of the Scorpions, you won't be disappointed.

This is the best Scorpions Album since Love Drive. I have been listening to the Scorps since they were "THE" underground band when I was in high school. So I go back to Virgin Killers and before. This Album is GREAT. To those talking about the Scorps losing their "sting" you can't expect 55 + year olds to write an album of anger like their old stuff. This album shows a mature group of successful musicians doing what they do best. That is writing songs with great melody and believe me, when they need to get heavy they do. I cannot stop listening to this opus. One song is catchier than the next. Klaus sounds unreal and Mathias lets it rip when he needs too..... Buy this CD as you will not be sorry.... ALBUM OF THE YEAR HANDS DOWN...... Desmond Child is a RICH Man for a reason..... The songs, playing and production are all top shelf.

Amazon.com

In 1987, RCA released a one-disc Elvis compilation called The Number One Hits that featured 18 tracks. So how did the label come up with 12 additional number ones (13 if you count the sensational "A Little Less Conversation" remix that brings the King into the 21st century as a bona fide dance/electronica star)? Well, the '87 compilation featured only Billboard number ones. "In the Ghetto" and "Burning Love" never reached the top there, nor did "Way Down," despite every copy of that 45 selling out on both sides of the Atlantic following Presley's 1977 death. Instead, the new compilers have used the major pop charts in both the U.S. (including Cashbox) and U.K. to determine inclusions. The tracks have all been remixed from original masters, which proves awesome at best (some of the songs have never sounded crisper if, at times, slightly antiseptic) and problematic at worst. Purists will definitely quibble. "A Fool Such As I," for instance, sounds like Elvis rerecorded his vocals. Hank Garland's great guitar solo also sounds different. It might be an alternate take. That's definitely the case with "The Wonder of You." A few lyrics are even different, meaning this isn't the same version as the original 45. Of course, none of that should matter to the youngsters who've been singing along to "Hound Dog" on the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack, or to any other newcomers. Despite the complaints, this is arguably the best single disc Elvis primer to date. Real fans will want to explore much deeper for treasures to be found, but albums like this guarantee that this is one king who will deservedly live very long, if not forever. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars the elvis beat.......2007-06-15

I am very happy with this cd/it starts out early elvis and rocks all the way through as none other than Elvis could do...actually a good sound and certainly not a disappointment...I recommend this cd as a good purchase.

3 out of 5 stars elvis 30 #1 hits.......2007-06-12

I justdo not think that this cd was properly remastered. Unlike elvis 2nd to none, which sounded great, the sound quality is lacking on this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2007-05-28

What an incredible collection of music. I may even be in the minority, but I thought many of the songs on the Second to None CD were just as good, and in some case better, than many of the offerings here. To put both together provides some of the greatest sounding songs ever released. Elvis was more than just a singer and performer. He is truly an American Icon. His voice and music are timeless and the grea thing about this CD, is that it opened the door for a lot of listeners who may not have been familiar with the great songs that are classics now and will remain so. I think it may be about time for "Third Times a Charm" for those other gems that fell a little short of the other classics.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best !!!.......2007-04-11

This collection of Elvis' work is one of the BEST purchase values as far as content and cost go. We are part of the generation that grew up listening to him and were extremely pleased with this large selection of his hits. If you want most of the songs you are familiar with and ones that were his biggest hits, this album is the best bet for your money !!!

5 out of 5 stars Golden treasures from 1956 to 1977.......2007-03-11

Unlike a lot of Elvis fans, this reviewer was but a child yet to enter school when the "King" passed away. Growing up, I had varying musical tastes and did enjoy some reruns on television of the films Elvis starred in. After a while I moved on to yet other interests in music, but eventually came back around to the one they call "The King" of Rock and Roll.

I'm not an Elvis Aficionado or expert, so if you want some fanatical Rain Man type repeater of his life or what was on his mind during the recording of a specific song, you will have to look elsewhere. What I will say is that what you see with this album is what you get. Every song is a #1 hit single, and there are 30 of them in all. Considering that you usually are lucky to get 20 songs for a maximum list on any CD, that in itself makes it something of value. 30 songs on a single CD that are also digitally remastered from their original recordings. That said, the remastering I feel is still great because although increasing and improving the sound, the album does not lose any of the raw, beautiful tones that make this music so timeless. The CD booklet has over 18 pages of photographs and commentary and features a nice timeline showing each song and when it was recorded. Some of the hits I'm enjoying right now at a glance are Heartbreak Hotel, All shook up, She's not you, and the pop sensation "Suspicious minds". If you are new to the music of Elvis Presley or someone who grew up with his music, I don't feel you can go wrong with purchasing "30" at all. It's a sunny day outside and hearing these songs gives me that feeling of enjoying the sounds, message and persona that is Elvis Presley.

Beverly Sills hardly needs an introduction. She sang on the radio as a child and on the operatic stage as a teenager; her meteoric international career was launched by appearances in several virtually unknown bel canto operas at the New York City Opera. This compilation of arias and ensembles from some of her signature roles, recorded in the 1970s, with splendid partners like Nicolai Gedda, Alfredo Kraus, and Sherrill Milnes, displays her unique vocal and dramatic artistry at its peak. Her voice, effortlessly produced over an enormous range, is bright, pure, infinitely variable in color, inflection and intensity. Her intonation is impeccable even in huge leaps, and her breath is endless. The coloratura roulades are like strings of perfect, luminous pearls, clearly articulated in seamless legato. But this stunning technique (whose only flaw is a sometimes wide, wobbly vibrato) is never used for show; every note has life and expression, serving the music and the dramatic situation. Indeed, her characters are flesh-and-blood human beings, whose thoughts, emotions and interactions, from inwardness to ecstasy, from lamentation to overflowing joy, she projects with riveting concentration. Rosina in Rossini's The Barber of Seville is a charming, mischievous minx who succumbs to delighted tenderness; Pamira's great scene from his Siege of Corinth shows clearly why her Metropolitan Opera debut in that role was a sensation. In Verdi's Rigoletto, Gilda's hopeful innocence turns into hopeless despair: she dies, palpably, on a floating, celestial pianissimo. In his La traviata, Violetta's initial cool, hesitant restraint gradually melts as she opens herself (and her voice) to Alfredo's ardor and the bliss of love. The vocal balance in their final duet is uncanny; its tremulous tenderness in the shadow of death breaks the heart, as does her duet with Germont. Massenet's Thais is sensuous; Donizetti's Don Pasquale and Lehár's The Merry Widow provide comic relief. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Here's what the fuss was all about!.......2007-07-17

It would have been even better if they had included at least one Cleopatra aria and something from Baby Doe, but it doesn't really matter, because this collection will allow younger listeners especially to hear what the fuss was all about! There are moments listening to Sills, especially from Traviata or Manon, that are so beautifully sung and so genuine that they are heartbreaking. I feel so fortunate to have heard her Queen of the Night, Manon, Violetta, and Baby Doe. She was so generous as a performer and as a humanitarian, and she really brought opera into the American mainstream.

5 out of 5 stars Beverly Sills - The Best.......2007-04-01

What a voice. No coloratura can compare, and she makes it seem so easy.

5 out of 5 stars Beverly Sills' highs are breathtaking!.......2006-09-18

Adio del Passato is incredible! Beverly's high, floating coloratura is no less than ethereal which takes you to another world. Her voice has given me so much joy that it is hard to say one recording is better than another because I love her Mozart album equally with her Bellini/Donizetti. It is so wonderful to have these recordings captured on CD! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars THE 2005 OPERA CD OF THE YEAR.......2006-08-19

THIS CD WAS THE BEST OPERA CD ISSUED LAST YEAR, AND HAS CAUGHT THE WORLD'S EAR IN NO TIME. I WAS BUSY WRITING IN SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL, WHILE THE STATEOWNED FM RADIOSTATION, DEDICATED TO CULTURE, WAS SOFTLY PLAYING OPERA ARIAS IN THE BACKGROUND. SUDDENLY I HEARD THE MOST FANTASTIC RENDERING OF "SEMPRE LIBERA" FROM "LA TRAVIATA". I GOT UP, SAT BY THE RADIO AND WAITED TO KNOW WHO WAS SINGING... THEN GOT BACK TO THE COMPUTER TO ORDER THIS CD FROM AMAZON! INCREDIBLE: ONLY 17 BUCKS FOR THIS, WHILE QUITE A BIT OF TRASH IS SOLD FOR 30.40 AND MORE...
A LADY FRIEND ONCE TOLD ME SHE COULD NOT LISTEN TO THE DUET IN "MADAMA BUTTERFLY" WITH MIRELLA FRENI AND LUCIANO PAVAROTTI (RECORDED IN 1974, BY VON KARAJAN) WITHOUT CRYING. WELL, YOU CANNOT LISTEN TO SILLS IN "LA TRAVIATA" DRY-EYED, NO MATTER WHO THE TENOR IS. SHE PROJECTS THE SAME DRAMATIC FEELING OF "LA DIVINA" CALLAS WITHOUT THOSE SHRIEKED HIGHNOTES; SHE OFFERS THE SAME COLORATURA VOCAL GYMNASTICS AS "LA STUPENDA" SUTHERLAND BUT WITH WARMTH... WHEN BEVERLY SANG, AS IN EVERYTHING ELSE SHE DID, SHE ALWAYS GAVE HER UTMOST. SHE WAS "LA GENEROSA" TO BE SURE.
DON'T JUST SIT THERE READING WHAT OTHERS THINK.
ORDER THIS CD NOW AND MARVEL AT HOW THIS GREAT AMERICAN LADY, IN SO MANY OTHER WAYS, ALSO COULD SING!

5 out of 5 stars EMI Does It Again: Beverly Sills - A Tribute.......2005-07-22

EMI's "Very Best Of" series are perfect introductions to operatic singers of the 20th century. Once you hear these artist tribute albums (much like The Singers series) you will get hooked on the singer and seek out their full-length studio recordings. Beverly Sills was the first truly famous American opera star. One may argue that she was not, that she was merely a continued tradition of American divas such as Mary Garden and Lily Pons and which still continues today with Renee Fleming, Elizabeth Futral and Susan Graham. Beverly was raised in New York City, which is still her home, and which is the home of the New York City Opera and the Met, opera houses which rocketed her to fame. Her first success (not featured in this recording...UH WHY ?) was Cleopatra of Handel's Julius Caesar, a performance she sang opposite the illustrious baritone Norman Treigle. Those performances were legendary because coincidentally at the same time the Met was opening its new theatre and season with what became a disastrous Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra starring Leontyne Price in an overblown, big-budget, epic fiasco. The great roles that followed the 1965 Cleopatra were Manon, Queen Elizabeth I in Roberto Deveraux, Maria Stuarda and Anna Bolena in the Donizetti Tudor Queen operas, Pamira in The Siege of Corinth (which were Sill's La Scala and belated Met debut. None of the Queens are featured in this recording, though its supposedly the Very Best Of. An aria from Rossini's Siege of Corinth is featured here however. What we are treated to however are fine lyric roles- Beverly Sills shone brightly and acted convincingly as Gilda in Rigoletto (the final scene is featured here) as Violetta in La Traviata, Thais, The Merry Widow (the beautiful Vilja is featured here)and the ingenue role of Norina in Don Pasquale is also showcased here. To each of these roles, Beverly Sills delivered an authenticity and dramatic interpretation, not ot mention beautiful, sweet tone. I love her pianissimos, her high notes, her chest register. It was the voice of Beverly Sills who first hooked me into opera. For a recording that should showcase her best work, Manon is not featured nor any of her prized French heroines- Marie in The Daughter of the Regiment and the heroines in Tales of Hoffman. Also not in here is the role that was her first success- the Broadway opera Ballad of Baby Doe. Even as such, the arias here are gorgeous. The Barber of Seville is in here and as Rosina she is playful and charming. Sills was a modern singer, with a voice that was beautiful but willing to sacrifice beauty for the sake of dramatic content. When Sills was once asked what she thought of the supposed rivalry with Joan Sutherland (which was never real and only gossip from partisan fans) Beverly said something to this effect -Joan and I are apples and oranges in our take on opera, we are Picasso and Monet. She would do anything for the effect of beauty and tone, I'd sacrifice beauty for the sake of dramatic text. Even as such, I see no ugliness to any of the roles here. All of them are beautiful to hear, full of rich floating celestial tones. It would have been nice to hear the roles that did call for Sills to step up the tense drama - Norma, will her recording ever be reissued by EMI ? Also, few people know that Beverly Sills sung role most would consider dangerous for her voice (though she sang them long before her career even took off)- Aida and Carmen!!

As it turned out, Led Zeppelin's infamous 1969 debut album was indicative of the decade to come--one that, fittingly, this band helped define with its decadently exaggerated, bowdlerized blues-rock. In shrieker Robert Plant, ex-Yardbird Jimmy Page found a vocalist who could match his guitar pyrotechnics, and the band pounded out its music with swaggering ferocity and Richter-scale-worthy volume. Pumping up blues classics such as Otis Rush's "I Can't Quit You Baby" and Howlin' Wolf's "How Many More Times" into near-cartoon parodies, the band also hinted at things to come with the manic "Communication Breakdown" and the lumbering set stopper "Dazed and Confused." --Billy Altman

1 out of 5 stars Biggest ripoff in the history of music!.......2007-07-05

I understand I am about to anger many legions of Led Zeppelin fans. Unfortunately not all Zeppelin fans have done their homework as well as Page and Plant and company did for this album. Here they shamelessly steal from other artists' songs and put their names on them for songwriting credits!! Don't believe me? Well, here goes.

1) Good Times Bad Times-A great Zeppelin tune, hands down! Unfortunately it is the only one they truly wrote for this album.

2) Babe I'm Gonna leave You-Another great Zeppelin tune? Not quite. This is a dead ripoff of Joan Baez's version of an Ann Breden song of the same title. Check it out...same lyrics and music. How Zeppelin originally credited themselves for writing this song is despicable.

3) You Shook Me-A Credited Willie Dixon tune. However, if you listen to Jeff Beck's version on Truth, you will find shocking similarities.

4) Dazed and Confused- A Zeppelin warhorse if there ever was one. Too bad the song is a dead ripoff of Jake Holmes' song titled, of course, Dazed and Confused. Oh, it's just a title you say? Listen to Holmes' version and you will hear the same exact riff! When Page was with The Yardbirds, Holmes was an opening act and hence, Page's introduction to a song he would selfishly give himself credit for writing.

5) Your Time Is Gonna Come-Listen to the intro to this song and then listen to Traffic's Dear Mr. Fantasy and tell me if you don't see a similarity, or in fact, a carbon copy!

6) Black Mountain Side-This is laughable!! Bert Jansch wrote and performed a song titled..HAHA, Black Water Side. Interesting to note that the riffs are shockingly similar..And it makes me wonder...

7) Communication Breakdown-A rewrite of Eddie Cochran's Nervous Breakdown.

8) I Can't Quit You Baby-Another Willie Dixon cover which they appropriately give him credit for. A rarity on this release.

9) How Many More Times-What do you get when you combine a Howlin' Wolf cover of How Many More Years and Albert King's The Hunter? You get THIS song credited to Zeppelin as writers.

Don't believe me? If you can find the above mentioned songs I DARE you to play them back to back with the Zeppelin versions. Zeppelin proves, on this release anyway, that they were the greatest cover band in the history of music. I am sickened and disappointed. How sad that such great musicians can so obviously rip off other artists and not give them credit for these songs. Pathetic, actually.

Sadly, these are not the only songs in Zeppelin's catalogue that are partially or fully taken from other artists that Zeppelin shamelessy wears as their own. I also have references for Stairway to Heaven, Custard Pie, Whole Lotta Love, The Lemon Song, In My time Of Dying, When the Levee Breaks..etc..Yes, eventually Zep DID give SOME artists their just due...after being sued. You can argue and say Who Cares? These versions are great, and that may very well be. But the truth should be known and if you ARE going to listen to Zeppelin at least be aware of what has taken place. It's ok to cover someone else's song...IF YOU GIVE THEM PROPER CREDIT WITHOUT PASSING IT OFF AS YOUR OWN AND DECEIVING THE PUBLIC. As a music fan, I am insulted. Why do you think Zep sold all the rights to their songs to Atlantic Records? One word: Lawsuits!

These 'Gods' of rock are thieves and if you're serious about music and care anything about artistic integrity you should be at least a little bit angry at this deceitfulness. If you're not then either integrity means nothing to you OR you are as big a thief as Page and comp. were.

5 out of 5 stars Zeppelin's First.......2007-06-22

And in my opinion it is still the best.
Led Zeppelin I began the start of the world's most famous and most influential heavy bluesy folk rock band ever. Also Led Zep are cited as pioneers of heavy metal (although 1/3 of I's music was acoustic) just before Black Sabbath hit.
Advancing the sound of Cream, Led Zeppelin created a sound that was unique and one that was all their own back in 1969. Heck, Led Zeppelin advanced the boundaries of Rock 'n' Roll and inspired millions of others in their wake.
Besides The Beatles, Led Zeppelin was the first Rock band that I have ever heard and got into.
My Father used to shake the whole house while playing "Dazed and Confused" late at night, almost every night downstairs in our basement at that time. Slowly the song crept into my thoughts and introduced me to a whole "new" sound being only 9 or 10 years old.
I can still feel the vibrations under my feet from listening to that deep descending bassline that begans "Dazed and Confused". Still my favorite song on this, their debut.
"Good Times Bad Times" kicks this album off and early on in my childhood this was one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs. It's just really catchy and upbeat & contains a swirling guitar effect set by Jimmy Page(one of the greatest guitarists ever).
"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is still one of the most beautiful and most memeorable acoustic tracks that I have ever heard - "I Can hear it Calling me..." - The song was inspired by Joan Baez's song from 1962.
Other favorites of mine include : "Communication Breakdown" and "How Many More Times" - which in the early days was also Led Zep's (The Hammer Of the Gods) closing number during concert tours.
Led Zeppelin's First will always be one of my All-Time Favorite albums and it also holds one of my fondest childhood memories.

5 out of 5 stars classic blues rock.......2007-06-17

You know, I think by this point, Zeppelin's first album is now my favorite. The following four albums have been played quite frequently through the years (yes, even Zeppelin III). The original has been played just as much (I won't deny that) but there's something about the first album that just stays with me through the years.

Maybe it's the fact that the production is amazing for 1969 standards. Seriously, how many albums back then were this loud? Maybe Tommy from the Who. I can't think of many others. Black Sabbath's debut was released a year later, so that doesn't count.

Anyway, I really like what Zeppelin was doing here. You have fairly lengthy and successful attempts at blues rock, with extraordinary jamming skills scattered throughout the album. Zeppelin was just not the same after this one. I especially love the drumming and the creepy bass work. Great album.

4 out of 5 stars It's a bird! It's a plane! It's... Led Zeppelin.......2007-05-12

Led Zeppelin I (1969) Led Zeppelin's first studio album.

Out of the ashes of the Yardbird's came rock's most skilled - if not most important - guitarist of all time. Jimmy Page, joining forces with Plant, Jones, and Bonham, formed what would become the definitive hard rock band. Not only did Led Zeppelin help define a new genre of rock, they explored every possible point. This album was the jumping point.

Let's cut to the chase; it don't matter how these four geniuses came together, the important thing is that they did. The music here is very good, several of which are classic rock radio staples. The opener "Good Times, Bad Times" is a relatively soft introduction to what the rest of the album had in store. The slow blues of "Dazed and Confused" and manic rush of "Communication Breakdown" as well as the great instrumental "Black Mountain Side" help to create with a single stroke Zeppelin's distinctive sound.

I own the original vinyl from 1969, and this transfer is wonderful. But it's expected; Page is so darn protective of his (or their) music that he wouldn't settle for a remaster that didn't sound excellent. This is one of the greater albums of all time, yet is not the finest in the Zeppelin catalog. Anyone who is looking to get into Zeppelin should not start here, though; "IV" is the best place to go first, followed by "II" and "Physical Graffiti".

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars-- a powerful debut........2007-05-08

One of the most well-realized debut albums of rock history, Led Zeppelin's self titled debut record must have ruffled some feathers when it was released. Certainly, nothing in rock music has quite been the same since-- the band's reinfusing rock with its blues roots and embracing distortion pretty much rewrote the course of rock music. Moreso than being the right band at the right time, Led Zeppelin was the right set of musicians with the right set of influences at the right time, combining a willingness and desire to try new things by borrowing from the old with the musicianship to pull it off. Session guitarist and brief member of the Yardbirds Jimmy Page possessed of seemingly endless arranging skills and a great, natural feeling for a blues solo. Providing perhaps the best foil for him was John Paul Jones-- bassist, organist and a musician who has proven over the years that he can fit anything naturally. The two London session hacks were joined by a pair of younger musicians, vocalist Robert Plant and drummer John Bonham, both of whom possessed a fierce power and energy that showed their youth but were no less virtuosos than the Page and Jones.

All of this is pretty much evident from the start-- opener "Good Times Bad Times" features a galloping, excitable riff and an unusually confident and relaxed vocal for such a young vocalist in Robert Plant, especially at the bridge, before turning proceeding over to a fierce guitar solo. It wraps up in less than three minutes and in many ways ends up being a summary of everything the band is. The remainder of the album is a nice mix of standards, adaptations and originals that, nearly 40 years later, are still FM radio staples, from the delicate, fingerplucked steel-string guitars interspersing chugging riffs of "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" to the manic "Dazed and Confused" and the frantic, explosive "Communication Breakdown". Along the way, the band hits droning guitars ("You Shook Me"), agile organ-driven pop ("Your Time is Gonna Come"), folky instrumentals ("Black Mountain Side") and Willie Dixon ("I Can't Quit You Baby").

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about "Led Zeppelin" is that even if you haven't heard the record before, it's all somehow familiar. The band has worked their way into the collective consciousness. They'd go on to many better records, but this isn't to take away from their debut, it's a great album. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Children's CD.......2007-07-12

I grew up listening to these songs on an old record that my parents had. We lost the record and I searched for these songs for my new little baby girl. I am so happy that I found it on Amazon and that my baby girl gets to grow up with the same classics that I did when I was a kid. The CD is wonderful and the price was even better.

5 out of 5 stars Aww the good old times!.......2007-06-18

I grew up with this music!! My dad bought the records when I was little, YES records! Im 25yrs old so this was the late the 80's when he purchased it. Now I have the opportunity to introduce this to my children! I'm so glad they are continuing to sell this music because I loved it as a child. I still remember taking the records out and asking my parents to play it.

3 out of 5 stars Walt Disney CD: Characters Do Not Sing.......2007-06-06

I'm a little disappointed. I purchased this CD thinking The Disney Characters would be singing the songs. My son was all excited when I showed him the CD and asked me to play it. When he heard it he said "this is not Mickey Mouse". He was very sad. The songs on this CD are sung by children. The CD is ok.

1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2007-05-13

Really very boring and campy - I can't bear to listen and wish I could return it. In fact all of the Disney Lullabuys and children's songs were downright horrible. Stick with Baby Einstein, Rock a Bye Baby and Just for Kids - Curious George is great too

Much better than all of those other randon baby CD's where all of the songs sound exactly the same and sound like they are sung by chipmunks!!

1 out of 5 stars Sounds like a cheap plastic toy.......2007-06-20

I have these DVD's and I can tell you that they will not be a huge part of my baby's development. I received them as a gift from someone that thinks that all you need to do is plunk your child in front of a TV all day without giving the baby any attention. You can see why these DVD's are popular at Day Care Centers or what I like to call, "Concentration camps for baby's with lazy parents", because they know that they can sit their kid/baby in front of the TV and let them turn into a thoughtless zombie while they listen to Baby Einstein totally ruin classics by Bach and DeBussy by playing the music with very cheap midi keyboards. I can get better quality music by whistling Dixie with a mouth-full of saltine crackers.

Also, it has been proven that classical music has nothing to do with the cognitive development of young people. Now, teach them how to play piano or violin and you have yourself an actual YOUNG EINSTEIN, but listening to this kind of music does nothing for the development of the brain. It is just for lazy parents that can't sit down with their kids and play with them or read them a book.

4 out of 5 stars would make you sleepy.........2007-06-15

its a good product with very fine music and my toddler realizes that it is sleep time, if I play it. he goes to bed and sleeps after a couple songs. I have trouble in some songs are some months.. dont know why.

4 out of 5 stars Kid's Music.......2007-06-08

I bought this CD for my grandniece, but after listening to it, I determined that no one would ever play this for her except me. I would have kept it for myself but I have the grown-up versions of each of the classical masterpieces on this CD. So, I ended up returning it for a full refund. If you want your kids to be exposed to classicl music, it's a great buy. But if you don't think they will get to listen to it, don't waste your time.

Baby Einstein: Lullaby Classics

1 out of 5 stars Not soothing.......2007-06-07

These synthesizer versions of classical songs get really old, really fast. Worse yet, the songs are sometimes not soothing at all, especially the very first song. The song seems to get particularly loud and uptempo, which is precisely what you don't expect in a lullaby. Please listen to the sample of the first song at least before you buy.

4 out of 5 stars Great for bedtime, but wish it were a real piano.......2007-06-01

This CD worked great to put my daughter to sleep while I rocked her in my arms, and I enjoyed the choices of songs and the arrangements. However, I would have preferred that real instruments were used.

Amazon.com essential recording

Queen brought a whole new meaning to the phrase over the top. While rock & roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the music's growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the band's singles hold up extremely well, later tracks such as "Hammer to Fall" as much as prime-era numbers such as "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Killer Queen," and "You're My Best Friend." The quartet's canny sense of melody and sophisticated vocal harmonies--not to mention Mercury's raised eyebrow--have traveled well through the years. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Queen Greatest Hits.......2007-07-16

I really started to like Queen recently. Bohemian rhapsody is such a great song and really gets you moving. My husband likes running to this music. I am still getting used to some of the other songs, but I really like this CD. Whenever I listen to We Are the Champions, I think of the episode of Cheers when all of the bar boys pounded on the bar to this song. It's fun. As always, Amazon seems to have the best prices. I don't have to pay shipping or tax and save an additional dollar or two on top of that.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Moleee Canoli! Camooosh this is a piece of GOLD.......2007-05-23

This creation is one remarkable piece of history! I'm so thankful I got it, and for such a nice price you get almost 40 songs! With their incorporation of piano and Freddie Mercury's voice, and their guitarist- this thing just blows out your ears in amazement. I had heard so many of these songs on the radio, but who knew they did all of them? Bicycle Race first annoyed me with so much repitition, but with my love for bike-riding, it's become a motto for me to. Killer Queen is just WOWZERs... so sexy and loaded. And there's tons more, but I'll save those as super surpise you'll be glad you got!

5 out of 5 stars Best Double Box Set Ever.......2007-05-09

What can I say?!!?
Queen was the best - the songs are brilliant and theatrical.
Freddy M. will be forever one of the best performers - EVER.

Thanks for the greatest box set at the greatest price, Amazon!
