Ae's first computer album. Has an industrial tinge to it. Cipater is one of their best songs. There are no misses on this album.

5 out of 5 stars MORE PULE PLEASE.......2007-05-20

RHYTHMICLY BEAUTIFUL. PULE IS MY FAVORITE AUTECHRE TRACK BY FAR.WHO SAYS ELECTRONIC MUSIC HAS NO SPIRIT ? LISTEN TO THIS TRACK AND LEARN.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely the sound of Machinery Gone Wrong.......2006-07-20

Chiastic Slide is probably my favorite CD by Autechre. From the synchronized mechanical lunacy of "Cipater" to the "machinery breaking down" sound of the closing track called "Nuane." I believe that this is Autechre at the peak of their creativity and I believe this is where they've achieved their main intention of what the wanted to contribute to IDM. A few really good CD singles followed this album but some of the following albums started to show some "less-than-harmonic" noise passages that, only because they were so long, those sound passages were kinda weak. But, to this day, I still can't get enough of Autechre. And they are long overdue for their next album.

I have about 15 CD's of Autechre shuffling in my 200 CD carrousel. All these tracks by Autechre are being mixed up with tracks by Aphex Twin, Higher Intelligence Agency, Squarepusher, Pete Namlook, Biosphere, The Orb, Phutureprimitive, Sounds From the Ground, Plaid, Gescom, Electric Skychurch, Boards of Canada, Mira Calx, and various other similar artists of which Autechre truly belongs with.

So, are you addicted to Autechre yet? Many of us are. I think there should be a club. Here's a list of the releases so to make sure that you have all that is available:

Incunabula (1993), Amber (1994), Tri Repatae (1995), Chaistic Slide (1997), LP5 (1998), EP7 (1999), Confield (2001), Draft 7.30 (2003), and Untilted (2005).

Now that you have all those, you will probably want to start collecting their various EP's, which are:

Cavity Job (1991), Basscadet (1994), Anti- (1994), We R Are Why/ Are Y Are We? (1995), Garbage (1995), Anvil Vapre (1995), Envane (1997), Cichlisuite (1997), Peel Session 1 (1999), Splitrmx12 (1999), Peel Session 2 (2001), and Gantz Graf (2002).

The EP's of Garbage and Anvil Vapre are actually added to the American release of Tri Repatae which is why that album is a double CD.

There may be a few others, but they have become very rare. Very hard to find. I've discovered more tracks by Autechre and various other "remixed by Autechre" releases all over the IDM sound genre. Plus, some artists like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Boards of Canada and the such have released similar recording as that of Autechre, but Autechre will always be the leader of this sound.

And here's another little secret for you. Autechre has released recordings under another pseudonym, Gescom. There is nothing on CD available from Gescom, (except "MiniDisc" which is nothing very interesting at all), but that doesn't mean you can't find their better recordings through various person to person music swap sites.

Look for these Gescom albums (I think they are only available on vinyl, and maybe only in the UK and Europe):

EP1 (1994), EP2 (1995), Motor (1994), The Sounds of Machines our Parents Used (1995), Keynell (1996), MiniDisc (1998), This (1998), That (1998), and Iss:sa (1999)

There are various takes and re-developed versions of Keynell. Just knowing that Gescom is so scarce, especially in America, it only makes it all the more totally cool to be Proudly Unhipp, and to actually have these recordings.

I find a sense of comfort in the lunacy that is Autechre's music. I have to listen to Autechre every day. It's gotten harder to listen to regular music any more and it is certainly difficult to revert back to regular music immediately after switching off Autechre. Autechre is like a drug, a stimulant, a natural high. It's a sound that inspires motivation in what ever you are doing. And yes, I can get mildly depressed if I don't have some Autechre at my immediate avail. If I've got a lot of work to do, then I know I'll get it done (and fast), if I've got Autechre playing in my background.

So, you other Autechre addicts out there, please share your story. Let us all know what Autechre has done for you, too. Has Autechre changed your life, in a positive or negative way? We need to let other people know how Autechre has an indirectly strange way of promoting better psychological health and a more positive vision about life.

5 out of 5 stars A turning point.......2006-03-21

I'm suprised there are so few reviews for this album, since it contains some of Autechre's most stunning moments. This is where Autechre really began to change, a great example are the shifting rhythm's, detail and minutaie that make up and seperate every beat in the song tewe. They're starting to explore new territory with this release, yet it's especially interesting since they maintain the lush fat textures of earlier works. This is one of the few examples of Autechre combining their early signatures with their latter signatures. Cipater is one of the sickest songs I've ever heard, it's kind of like machine hip-hop with an asiatic vibe. Cichli I feel is an electronic masterpiece, it's very vertical in nature, with the chilling harmonies of it's string section, that fuse beautifully with the dissonant nature of it's rhythm. It's like a fluctuating wave of tones and melody, coming at you in varying shades, beautiful. Even with all of this I can see the critics point of view on some aspects, there are tracks that carry on repetitavely for too long, and the album seems to peak somewhere around the middle. Nonetheless this is the Autechre album that I find myself returning to the most, being moved by the most, and it's essential in understanding their musical evolution.

5 out of 5 stars Their best expiremental album.......2005-10-25

When Autechre began changing their style, and expirementing with sound, it turned a lot of fans off. Not me though, i enjoy all their albums. and while i do prefer their more ambient side shown with Amber, I love this CD to death. Chiastic Slide may seem like the same beat over and over again with each track at first.. a few listens and you start to see the big picture. I wouldn't trade this album for anything

5 out of 5 stars This stuff is awesome!.......2001-12-30

I got this album, along with Aphex Twin's SAWII for Christmas, and this is the one I've listened to the most... I love it... sure it's inaccessible at first (not half as inaccessable as SAWII I might add), but give it time... it is very rewarding after a while i've getting used to it... At first I thought it was ok, but really repetative... now I think each and every song is amazing... this is only my second Autechre purchase, although I have heard Amber, and parts of LP5, and Tri Repetae, and already I think it's the best out of those... It's just so beautiful, and noisy, and desolate, and lonely all at the same time... it starts with Cipater, which is a very cool song which starts one way, and morphs into something totally different before it ends... track 2, although considered just noise by many, is beautiful... I liked it right from the start... Tewe is another good one... the percussion is really cool, softer then some of the other songs, and it has a beautiful subtle melody that really comes into view after a few listens... Cichli however is the highlight for me... it's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard... and the ending where the percussion falls away and the melody is left alone is simply perfect... the rest of the songs are each amazing, and the last song is another highpoint, which I only realized earlier today... it's a great great ending to a beautiful album... track 8 is the only song I haven't totally gotten into yet, but even that one is very appealing to me... look, if you like electronic music, are sick of the state of popular music today, and are interested in exploring different types of music, then definately check this out... it is absolutely brilliant!

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorites, but beware..........2001-08-08

I love Chiastic Slide myself. It's probably Autechre's most musical album to date. Almost every base has been covered in a 9 track span. But, it's hard to get into, and most people will probably listen to it once and be put off by it. This CD, probably more than any other Autechre, rewards deeper listening. I've listened to every Autechre CD I own constantly, and know every little quirk by heart, but not with Chiastic Slide. I hear new things every time, no matter how subtle they are. "Cipater" is probably my favorite off the CD, reminiscent of driving through the bad part of the city at 3am in the morning. The sitar that floats over the last 5 minutes is one of the most beautiful moments in electronic music history. "Rettic AC" is the track that takes the most time to get used it. To the untrained ear, it's just a bunch of random noise, but what lies under the noise is something you have to hear to understand. "Cichli" is a schizophrenic robot, with it's constant clicks and bloops covering up it's cries for help. "Hub" is something like what I used to create with my drum machine and Yamaha keyboard. I'd record the track, then slow it down and reverse it. It's completely alien, and almost disturbing at point. "Recury" launches itself forward with one of the fattest and largest breaks I've ever heard, twisting and spewing through nearly 10 minutes. "Pule" is probably the most musical and pleasant Autechre track of all time. It's got a Carribean feel to it, and I assume the melody is composed of steel drums. It's the kind of music you'd want playing while in Heaven or the afterworld of your choice.
I'd say, paying the extra money is well worth owning this. Even though Autechre constantly evolves, this is nothing like they've ever touched before. It's just incredible.

5 out of 5 stars IMPORTANT.......2001-07-10

Approach every autechre CD as you would an ambient CD (does that explain why some think this album is repetitive). To understand their music you must first understand the underlying emotion of each song. Some people say its just a bunch of noise (especially the Confield album) but really they just can't get in contact with the needed emotion. But once in contact you become fused with the music!

I just got this CD in the mail and I'm on the 7th track. It is definately worth the purchase so far. The music is complex but that doesn't necessarily make it difficult. LIke I said, maybe that's because I've listened to so much ambient music (ENO, Tangerine Dream...). What I'm trying to say, though Im not good at writing stuff, is that if your an intellectual, romanticist, or industrialist THAN THIS CD IS FOR YOU!
