.
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.

4 out of 5 stars A justly famous first-generation "Der Rosenkavalier"........2003-01-20

As one who heard two of the principals in this famous old recording (Schumann and Olszewska at the end of their careers), I ought perhaps to lead off a discussion and review of this latest of its reissues.

By 1933 it was becoming clear that this most delectable and brilliantly scripted opera was likely to retain a permanent place in the international repertory. EMI's leading producer, Fred Gaisberg, had attended performances in London and Vienna given by a notable cast of singers usually conducted by Bruno Walter, and he commenced planning for a Vienna recording. As with most opera recording projects, however, there needed to be compromises. Firstly, the opera was too lengthy to record and issue on 78s. Secondly, the idea of having Strauss himself conduct it had to be abandoned because he demanded too high a fee. Lehmann's recording contracts allowed her to be included, but neither Bruno Walter as conductor nor Delia Reinhardt as the preferred Octavian could be engaged. Ultimately the project went ahead and an abridged version of the opera, reduced to about half its total duration, was recorded and released on thirteen 78s.

In 1951, on BBC radio, I heard Elisabeth Schumann play the recording of the final duet in this opera. She introduced it as follows: "I must let you into a little secret concerning this record. When we were making these records in Vienna Lotte Lehmann forgot two notes she had to sing. You may recall that just before the final duet Sophie's father remarks to the Marschallin how amazing young people are and the Marschallin replies, 'Ja, ja'. With the trio over, Lotte Lehmann thought her part in the recording was over and retired to her country house near Vienna. There were too many complications involved in getting Miss Lehmann back and so I sang the two words 'Ja, ja'. You must admit I did it very well." Subsequent research has revealed that the final duet was in fact the first item of the project to be recorded, on the first morning of the schedule, and that Lotte Lehmann had not yet arrived. Nevertheless Schumann did substitute for her great friend and colleague and the "take" was approved immediately.

Seventy years later, this splendid Mark Obert-Thorn reissue allows this recording to be heard with greater ease and clarity than ever before. Even so, listeners must bear in mind that recording techniques of the 1930s were barely adequate for capturing the richness of the orchestral score or the intricate vocal textures of the many trios and duets. Singing styles, moreover, differ from today's: both Richard Mayr and Elisabeth Schumann lay the portamento on very thickly. It is, nevertheless, a justly famous cast and one that became closely associated with the opera almost (but not quite) from the time of its 1911 premiere.

Lehmann's Marschallin meets all the requirements of the part. Womanly, wise, accepting of disappointment and generous in her nobility, this Marschallin commands attention throughout. Having exactly the kind of silvery voice and enchanting personality that match the role of Sophie, Elisabeth Schumann makes Sophie a more dominant character than is often the case. How well she depicts girlishness after acknowledging the presentation of the silver rose ("I am looking forward to being married? Are you looking forward too?", and how well she ticks off Baron Ochs in the final act ( "I've done and finished with you")! Happily, almost all Sophie's music was retained in this abridged recording. Maria Olszewska's Octavian is perhaps more impressive for purely vocal richness than for character insights. Richard Mayr, Viennese born and bred, created the part of Baron Ochs at the opera's Vienna premiere in 1911 and remained its most celebrated exponent until the time of his death not long after this recording was made. Much of his part of the opera is omitted in this recording but enough remains to show his fluency in the Viennese accent and some highly musical clowning.

Both Lehmann and Mayr are represented in individual extracts from this opera, which Naxos provide as an appendix to this recording.

Deutsche Grammophon is lucky in that World War II didn't slow classical recordings in Germany as it did in the United States but stimulated them: It was essential for wartime morale. Thus, if you can get past any repugnance related to these recordings' genesis, there's a huge amount to enjoy. There's a disc of lieder by all the prewar greats (Franz Volker, Tiana Lemnitz, Erna Berger, and Heinrich Schlusnus), a disc of Wagner featuring young Hans Hotter, opera and operetta performances by Berger and Helge Roswaenge, and a disc showing how the German singers gave Italian opera a distinctively Nordic but highly communicative edge. The set is crowned by a complete Winterreise that was recorded by Peter Anders in 1945 (and sounds it): the cultivated tenor's anguished performance embodies a Germany facing the abyss. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars The inimitable Tauber sings lieder.......2003-02-13

In Volume 1 of this series, Tauber sang from Viennese operetta primarily, the repertoire for which he was best known. In this issue he sings standard lieder recital fare, an area where he was just as talented. But his career as a purveyor of Viennese charm often co-opted his ability to sing 'serious' music, much as being an 'Irish tenor' took over the career of John McCormack. Here, though, he makes up for that, and in wonderful style. Just listen to Schumann's 'Im wunderschönen Monat Mai' or 'Ich grolle nicht' and you'll see what I mean. Or 'Träume' from Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder. I almost forget to breathe when he sings Richard Strauss's 'Morgen.' The only small quibble I'd have is that Tauber's strong Viennese accent sometimes intrudes in literature we generally hear with more standard hochdeutsch pronunciation.

These performances were originally published on the German Odeon label and had a great deal of surface noise. Wizard recording producer Ward Marston has cleaned up and burnished their sound inobtrusively. The performances themselves are, of course, self-recommending, and particularly at this bargain price.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful addition to the early Romantic Opera CDs.......2007-06-14

If you enjoy the music of the early Romantics, this two CD set is a wonderful buy. A hundred years ago in this country, vocal recitals flourished. The programs of singers often included arias from the operas of Weber, Spohr, and Beethoven's "Fidelio." These recitals are much less common now and today most opera companies struggle for funds and cannot "afford to take a chance" on rare gems; the standard fare for a four or five opera season being "Boheme," "Traviata," and "Barber," etc. But fortunately the age of the CD has brought many wonderful recordings of almost all of Weber's operas and even those of more obscure composers such as Marschner. Hopefully this recording of "Faust" will be followed by other Spohr operas. Amazon has wonderful recordings of the complete violin concertos and the symphonies and a good deal of Spohr's chamber music. Little outside of the "Violin Concerto #8" is ever heard in public, but you will enjoy this recording. The Overture would be a welcome opening for any symphony concert. There are beautiful arias and duets throughout that rival the melodies of Gounod's opera of the same title. Especially beautiful are the arias for Kunigunde "Ja ich fuhl es, treue Liebes" in Act 1 and Act Two's Recitative and Aria "Wie dich nennen," with a beautiful clarinet obligato not unlike Mozart's in "La Clemenza de Tito." Gorgeous music that only owners of this recording will enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Louis Spohrs great romantical Opera.......2001-01-09

This recording of Spohr's Faust is performed by very good singers (of the small Opera in Bielefeld/Germany). Diane Jennings is perfect in the role of Kunigunde and she lives the comlete character by her voice. The main character is sungen by Michael Vier, a warm and soft barritone. Bat the best performer is Eelco von Jordis, Mephisto himself... It is great to listen to Mephisto's words, which will Faust last kill. In this recording you are feeling the emotions of the acteurs, you become part of the opera. The "Rezitativ-Fassung" von 1852 shows, that Louis Spor (Amazom named him Ludwig) is much more than a simple violin-teacher. The Overture e.g. is a complex work.

    Amazon.com essential recording

Compared to Knappertsbusch's stodgy, lethargic Bayreuth Parsifals from the 50s, this 1964 performance, Knappertsbusch's last, is quite different. Textures have lightened, tempos are faster, and Wagner's long arcs soar instead of sag. These qualities characterize Knappertsbusch's "official" 1962 Philips Parsifal, but 1964 has a better cast. Hotter relishes Gurnemanz's long, inward monologues, while, by contrast, Vickers projects the title role with wound-up intensity. Thomas Stewart's Amfortas bears his tortured burden with more dignity than usual, and the unsung (no pun intended) Barbro Ericson is as complete, complex, and affecting a Kundry as one can get. If you've been hankering for a Knappertsbusch parsifal, this is the one. Fine mono broadcast sound, but no texts. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars The best live Parsifal from Bayreuth.......2005-10-02

The Amazon reviewer has made every crucial point about this live 1964 recording, including his less than starry-eyed view of the lackluster Knappertsbusch. I had long ignored Parsifal becasue of its seemingly endless drone, until Karajan brought out the incredible contrasts, orchestral colors, and surging pulse that Kna missed in every single performance we have of his--at least this 1964 version, although still quite slack at times, is faster than his usual.

As everyone else has commented, Vickers is an incomparable Parsifal. The role is fiendishly difficult and in some ways unrewarding, given how much standing around the tenor must do while Gurnemanz sings for ten or twenty minutes at a go. Vickers is the only true Heldentenor voice we have in this part, so it's a glorious opportunity to hear someone who isn't a surrogate for that kind of voice, as Windgassen, Jess Thomas, and domingo are (it must be said that on stage Parisfal is one of Domingo's most moving roles).

    5 out of 5 stars Superb Parsifal.......2004-09-05

Though from a live performance at Bayreuth in 1964, this is a superb recording of Parsifal. Jon Vickers (in my book, the greatest tenor of the 20th century) is outstanding in the title role and Hans Hotter is equally outstanding as Gurnemanz. The rest of the cast is very good and Knappertsbusch, conducting his last opera performance, does a superb job. The sound is much better than I have heard on many other "live" recordings--clear, even though monaural. The balance between the orchestra and singers is good. There is little or no audience noise--none at the end, whether it was because of audience respect for the performance or a re-recording of this bit, I cannot tell. (Only once have I experienced an entire audience remaining completely silent until the last note has died away--a Gotterdammerung in San Francisco in the 1970s. Perhaps this Bayreuth audience was equally respectful.) The only problem is the lack of a libretto--minor unless one has no other recording of Parsifal. This is an A+ performance, and I am absolutely delighted with it.

5 out of 5 stars An Apostate redeemed.......2003-05-30

For a long time, I had a lot of trouble with this opera-it always seemed long , drawn out. This performance changed the way I viewed Parsifal. This performance is involving, at times thrilling, and never, repeat, never dull. All the performers seem to be on an "on" night, from Knappertsbusch himself, right down to the last grail Knight. Being a live performance only seems to push everyone to do better. Vickers and Knappertsbusch seem to consistently breath as one, and the result is , well, just WOW. Maybe not a newcomers first choice because of the live performance in (outstanding) mono sound, but for the rest of us who are nutbars about Wagner, this is one to seriously consider

    5 out of 5 stars A good recording...GREAT performance!.......2000-07-15

This performance, Knappertbusch's last operatic performance, is a real treat! Kna conducts with his usual perfect pacing and grandeur, and the sound is very good...too bad it's in mono as opposed to the marvelous Philips recording two years earlier. Hotter sings well, although his voice is considerably darker and thicker than in '62. Thomas Stewart also sings well, although I couldn't get over the impression that this was a young singer near the beginning of his career. Barbro Ericson seems a bit heavy and unyielding as Kundry. Standing head and shoulders above all and placing himself on equal terms with Kna is Jon Vickers. His Parsifal is simply one of the most earth shattering portrayals of the role on record. His Act 2 transformation, from naïve and "pure fool" to Redeemer of the Holy Grail is amazing. Here, finally, is a Parsifal who suffers, agonizes and emerges in sublime triumph over temptation. His Act 3 narrative, "Zu ihm, des tiefe Klangen" is riveting. The 1962 Philips is the better recording...glorious sound, more consistent performances throughout the entire cast, but Kna and Vickers together are so profound, so authoritative that this recording is a definite "must-have".

4 out of 5 stars A MUST for Vickers fans.......1999-08-21

This is Vickers' night. I don't mean to knock the rest of the cast and yes, it was KNA's last performance at Bayreuth, but Vickers makes this a unique experience. Hotter, Neidlinger, KNA and his troupe of flowermaidens, are as usual--this recording sounds like several others as far as they are concerned. Thomas Stewart's performance was workman-like but unremarkable.

Vickers is, well, Vickers. The master of the gradual climax, gigantic and fully supported in all registers, recognizably free with his vibrato and glissando, a little grainy at times, passionate and introspective. I seem to recall reading somewhere that he objected to the role for religious reasons but I can't confirm this. (If you know anything about it, please write me.) In any case, he sounds as if he'd been thinking carefully about the role for a long time. Also thought-provoking, strong and well-centered in her role was Barbara Erikson.

There's some static in the printing. But I keep coming back to this performance.

4 out of 5 stars Great album except for the Title Track.......2000-05-02

The third man theme orchestration on the first track is simply awful (bad enough to be humorous)! The rest of the CD is delightful with just zither with accordian accompanyment. There might be other instruments, but I'm not sure. Karras used a zither that was especially built for him which produced a very full and rather aggressive sound. He also repeatedly plucked the strings in many songs to produce a sustaining tone. I find that style of playing very interesting. "The Third Man" is one of my favorite movies. The opening credit showing Karras' hands playing the zither is, in my opinion, one of the great graphic achievements of that era. Most of the album is made-up of various themes from Strauss and operetta strung together. Each track may contain 3-5 themes. My favorite theme is #2 on track 21. The good original analog recording is nicely transferred to digital with little noise and appropriate dynamic range. Listening to this recording is like taking a quick trip to one of my favorite cities--Vienna!

5 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs by a singer and pianist with encyclopedic knowledge of Schubert songs.......2005-10-25

I bought this collection from a mail order firm in 1993, and can only call it "an encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs by a singer and pianist with an encyclopedic knowledge of Schubert songs."

I don't listen to these discs track to track, but rather selected tracks and keep this 9 disc set in my collection as an encyclopedia, for reference, rather than to listen to for hours on end.

This collection doesn't contain any of the 3 great Schubert song cycles: "Schwanengesang", "Die Schone Mullerin", or "Winterreise." Most of these songs are less than 5 minutes in length, but some are as long as 20 minutes, with Recitative/Aria/Recit./Aria pattern. Each disc is 70 minutes or more, making for a lot of music. Going dollar for music, it's a good deal!

I am very thankful for this release. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (born 1925) seemed inexhaustable, making many lieder and opera recordings in the late 1960s/early 70s when these recordings were made for DG. His partnership with pianist Gerald Moore lasted many years, and they recorded many of these same lieder for EMI.

I won't attempt to go into detail describing different songs in this large collection, but if you love great singing and Schubert lieder, consider this as an investment in eternity. If you only want a disc of "Greatest hits" of this genre, consider the DG "Originals" release of Fischer-Dieskau with both Gerald Moore and Jorg Demus in different tracks.

You can tell I'm biased in favor of Herr Fischer-Dieskau and his singing, which is always beautiful here. I also love Schubert as sung by Hermann Prey (1929-1998): Philips Eloquence, and Decca (deleted); Janet Baker (Hyperion, with Graham Johnson); and Hans Hotter (EMI, with "Schwanengesang.")

5 out of 5 stars Make up your mind to this journey........2001-02-07

Since this set of Schubert lieder (3 boxes, 21 cds in all) has become a legedary classic, I don't think I should make any comment. But just a suggestion to those who want to embark on these discs.

Make up your mind on this journey. On facing such a tome record arranged and sung chronically, it's useless and wrong only to listen to some famous lieder or discs or just listen randomly. You should spare a long period of time, begin by listening from the very first disc to the last disc. And, during the period do not listen to any lied of other composers. Then gradually, lied by lied, disc by disc, you will forget this is Fischer-Diskau and Moore---This is a real life of a great soul! You are really touching and breathing with a great soul! Feel the sound of schubert, feel his struggle, his emotion, his feeling, his hate and love. Feel how those youthful spontaneous and raw lieder gradually developed into fully ripened masterpieces. Such wonderful experience belongs only to really patient listeners.

It took me about 2 full weeks to listen to the whole 21 discs. Fischer-Diskau and Moore chose the "Abschied(Farewell)" to be the last lieder read (this song happened to be the only lied of Schubert to be recite with piano accompaniment, and which was composed during his final years). Thus the whole hundreds of lieder, or the whole life of Schubert, ended on this lied, farewell to the earth. It began with "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde (Goodbye, you beautiful Earth)". I will forever remember when I finally came into this lied, on the first words of Diskau's "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde" I trembled and cried from the very first note to the last note. My god, it's untouchable granduer.
