Amazon.com essential recording

Released in 1981, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is a collaboration between ambient pioneer Brian Eno and Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. On Ghosts, the two strong-willed musicians manage to come to a meeting of the minds, blending Byrne's herky-jerky funk with Eno's atmospheric sound sculpting. More than anything, this is a large album, intent on pushing itself to the front of the listener's consciousness. Abundant percussion (everything from booming tribal drums to eerie electronics) reverberates in the background while Byrne and Eno toss all manner of found sounds, field recordings, and radio broadcasts into the mix. What results is a groundbreaking album that introduced a generation to the dazzling possibilities offered by electronic recording techniques. Highlights include "The Jezebel Spirit," an electro-funk workout that uses a recording of an exorcism as its focal point, and "Very, Very Hungry," a mysteriously ethereal display of electronic percussion and large-scale sonic architecture. --S. Duda

Album Description

Brian Eno and David Byrne's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts appears downright visionary. With its "found" vocals, cut-and-paste arrangements, funked-up rhythms and embrace of influences from all around the globe, the duo's controversial work anticipated the creative cross-pollination and technological innovation of contemporary dance music, world music, hip hop and alternative rock. You can hear echoes of My Life in the Bush of Ghosts in the anthems Moby built around vintage vocal samples, in the outrageously exotic beats of Missy Elliot and Timbaland, in the Middle Eastern accented chill-out tracks of Thievery Corporation or Bjork's otherworldly soundscapes.

5 out of 5 stars good rerelease of an amazing album.......2007-03-26

I'm not sure how much better the remasters are on this disc than the original recording. They are better, I think, but the change is subtle. (As opposed to, say, the Talking Heads remasters, which are instantly, recognizably, and indisputably superior to the original recordings.) Everything just sounds a little crisper, I guess.

You can compare and ponder the point for some time, but what this rerelease has done is made me go back and listen again to what was a truly remarkable record the first time around and remains so to this day. It has held up amazingly well over the years. Way ahead of its time. Imagine Remain in Light with random samples and looped noise and sampled vocals filling up the spaces that David Byrne voice would normally occupy and you have a sense of it. Incredible.

This version also comes with seven bonus tracks. These range from tracks that truly could have made the album to ones that are just out-and-out bizarre. I adore the final number, guitar with tin foil.

If you already have the original version, I recommend getting this. If you don't have any previous version, you should stop reading this right now and go get it. Now. In fact, I'm not going to type anymore, just so you can go do it.

5 out of 5 stars Jittery masterpiece.......2007-02-12

The one thing that struck me when first listening to the album was how jittery it sounded. The guitars sounded like they were going to explode at any minute....the samples were zooming in from all over the place....it almost sounded like total chaos was in progress. But the more you listen to this, the more you see how much effort went into it. It's also impossibly funky too. In the line between the magnificent Fear of Music and it's more successful follow up Remain in Light....this certainly feels like a jigsaw piece that fits in explaining the slight transition that occured during the making of the album. Having said that, it would be foolish to dismiss this as something that happened inbetween two Talking Heads albums. To do that would be to diminish its status. Really it's a collective, collaborative masterpiece. The amount of consideration that went into it and yet how spontaneous it all sounds is nothing short of amazing. It is the sort of album that everyone should own at least.

5 out of 5 stars A well-deserved 25th anniversary reissue for the groundbreaking album.......2007-01-21

Brian Eno, producer of the Talking Heads' early albums, and David Byrne, singer-songwriter of the Talking Heads, take a left turn and found further common ground in making this groundbreaking album. First released in 1981, the album receives a long deserved reissue for its 25th anniversary.

The 2006 release of "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" (18 tracks, 60 min.) is more than just a standard reissue. Personally supervised by David Byrne, this is a reworking of the original album, with 7 new tracks and a new tracklisting. The now 18 tracks are now divided up in "3 sides". It bears noting that much of the album was recorded before the Talking Heads' "Remain in Light", but released afterwards (for technical reasons). Listen again to "Remain in Light" and you'll see how much influence "My Life" had on that album. As to this reissue, everthing is done first class: the remastered sound is impeccable, the 28 page booklet is full of interesting information, starting with an excerpt from author Amos Tutuola's 1952 book "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts", from which the album takes its inspiration, to "The Making of" extensive liner notes by Byrne and Eno themselves.

In all, this is surely the definitive version of "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" (even with the regrettable omission of the "Qu'run" track). The album has proven over the years to be not merely enormously influential, but better yet thoroughly enjoyable and sounds as fresh today as it did when this came out 25 years ago. Essential for any music fan.

4 out of 5 stars Great experimental CD from the 80's.......2007-01-18

its a true shame the track quran was removed: it was one of the better tracks. Not all important musical works of art hold up over time. This is a significant album from that time period, granted. But mixing "found samples" and the technology to do that has progressed so far at this point, that to my ears, this great album sounds a bit dated. The new re-mastered CD sounds good but still a bit too muddy for my taste. Definately worth several listens. The live soudtrack of Stop Making Sense outshines this CD by a mile and Remain in Light is a far far better "experimental" work from the same time period and also from David Byrne. Byrne's The Catherine Wheel is also more memorable than My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.

5 out of 5 stars Zonky and Out of The Ordinary, Even Today.......2006-11-20

The first thing that struck me about this album was the absolutely unorthodox instrumentation. In many ways, it did feel like a document of erratic tribal exploits. Other tracks, like "America is Waiting" and "Mea Culpa," display an utterly weird approach that still defies explanation. Other songs are deeply atmospheric in nature and transport the listener to some unknown locale. The most conventional track, "Regiment," boasts a groove of the darkest and most macabre variety; it's a perversion of the funk, and only a lone Arabic voice can bring light to this danceable nightmare.

There's nothing on this album that says "this should work," and yet, it all coalesces surprisingly well. Given the state of technology in 1980 compared to today, its easy to see why there's a sort of organic vitality in these compositions that's lacking in today's music. Rarely does such a strange work please the pallate so well.

3 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Re-Creation of Over-Exposed Legrand Material.......2006-02-10

Michel Legrand is one the biggest artists of music entertainment, a sensitive composer and arranger.

Here you'll find a correct selection of Legrand's material with unnecessarily new arrangements though with an impeccable performance.

Many of the songs in the repertoire are still available in CDs you can find here @Amazon and the best Legrand is the original Legrand.

This album stands only for those who doesn't care about original takes and wishes just for a selection of the best Legrand.

5 out of 5 stars "one of the greatest film composers of the 20th Century ~ Michel Legrand".......2005-10-26

Silva Screen has released a collection that will set you on your ear "The Essential Michel Legrand Film Music Collection"...Legrand's score sets the tone and mood you experience a sense of power and freedom, so exhilarating...Legrand's genius in composition and orchestration, puts the listener smack dab in the middle of each film he scores as it serves up a generous helping of heaven for all "film-score-buff" collectors

Michel Legrand was born in Paris on February 24th, 1932...attended the Paris Conservatory Progressing...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s with "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG" (1964)..."THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR" (1968)..."THE GO-BETWEEN" (1970)..."SUMMER OF '42" (1971)..."THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1973)...and three Oscars from the Academy Awards for "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" for best music and original song in 1969 , "SUMMER OF '42" for best original song and original dramatic score in 1972... "YENTL for best music and original song score in 1984...then in 2003 nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards for Best Original Music Score for the Musical "Amour", there's no letting up for this hard working composer.

The Flemish Radio Orchestra featuring conductor composer Michel Legrand on piano and harpsichord, Philippe Chayeb on bass, Thierry Chauvet on drums and Bruno Caviglia on guitar...all in all did a magnificent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for a multitude of films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which is long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand.

This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Legrand's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is Reynold da Silva [executive producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

4 out of 5 stars The Best That I have Heard From Brian!!!.......2005-12-26

I own a few Brian Culbertson CD's. This is the best that I have heard from him. Most CD's are front-loaded with the best songs at the beginning of the CD. That isn't the case with this one. They are throughout it. My favorites are Come To Me, Modern Life, And Take Me Home To You. If you don't own anything from Brian...start with this one. You will be glad you did!

Modern Life is a breath of fresh air after a chili-bean eating contest. I give it 2 thumbs up... and a toenail!

5 out of 5 stars Modern Life is a timeless peice.......2005-06-16

It's perhaps most poignant when we consider how Modern Life began as a testbed for Culbertson, do we realize the magnitude of his genius. Modern Life, for all intents and purposes, personafies this young virtuoso.

Music is for a large part, an avenue to explore one's feelings and emotions; and Brian Culbertson is a master at that. His compositions never fail to evoke a sense escapism for me. It's both beautiful and tragic, within the context of the story being told by the music.

Modern Life will remain my favorite for personal reasons, and for anyone wanting to discover Culbertson as it was meant to be, there is no better way.

5 out of 5 stars you HAVE to have this CD!!.......2005-04-01

this is by far Brian Culbertson's best CD! There is no way of describing why until you hear it for yourself. Simple yet complex, funky yet smooth, Real, Honest, True, young, fun, ... I just can't say enough about the music on this CD! Track 2 is one of the sexiest tunes in contemporary jazz, he's got a urbany slick big city vibe/ Bluesy country all at the same time feel, on "Out of the Mist", "Modern Life" is one of my all time favorite pieces by a keyboard player, Its simplicity just blows me away because of the ability it has to make me feel good, like watching the end to the best love story ever! "Midnight Sun" has such a great groove, I just can't sit in my chair when it comes on!! Get this CD, you will be happy you did!

5 out of 5 stars Russell J. Schultz.......2001-07-09

OUTSTANDING! Of all the CD's this incredibly gifted artist has produced, 'MODERN LIFE' has to be the crown jewel! High in vitality and emotion! 'Tomorrow's World','Out of the Mist',and 'Take me home to You' WILL leave a very good impression in your memory! This guy sets the benchmark of top shelf, jet-set cool professionalism! Do yourself a big favor. Buy this CD, fire it up,turn out the lights and go on a musical vacation!

5 out of 5 stars Classic techno fun.......2007-05-06

This CD brings back so many memories. It is filled with techo/dance music from the late 80's early 90's. If you like techno/house/dance club music then this is the perfect CD for you.

4 out of 5 stars Real Cool Soundtrack.......2002-04-12

One of the first techno/electronica soundtracks to gain prominence was the soundtrack to Ralph Bakshi's Cool World, which garnered mixed reviews. I'm ambivalent about it myself today, but my love of the soundtrack has not diminished, but actually gained higher levels of appreciation.

David Bowie leads off with "Real Cool World" in yet another one of his chameleonic incarnations. Even though clocking in at over five minutes, its quick-beat techno rhythm is not prolonged agony. It's the next track, the Thompson Twins' "Play With Me," my favorite by the way, that is unlike anything Tom Bailey and Alannah Currie have ever done. Sure, they ruled with Here's To Future Days, but in terms of keeping with the thematic sound and feeling of the movie, this song succeeds admirably.

When are the Pet Shop Boys not the Pet Shop Boys? Answer: when Neil Tennant does lead vocals in "Disappointed," in his side project Electronic, also with Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr.

The hardest song is the Ministry's Psalm 69 song, "N.W.O." and that boosts the album as well. It's the next song, the Cult's "The Witch," which is unlike anything from the new-wavy Love or AC-DC crunch of Electric. There's an industrial buzzing punctuated by chords slightly reminiscent of Electric. Ian Astbury sounds muted by the fuzz and buzz of this song. Still worthwhile, though.

Moby contributes two songs here, "Ah Ah" and "Next Is The E." This is early Moby at his best, and his triple figure BPM and soul-tinged female vocalist is in its best in "Next Is The E."

"Do That Thang" out-kapow's "Next Is The E" in its energetic vivaciousness, hard guitar chords, funky vocals, electronic effects on overdrive chaos. I dare anyone to hear this song and not feel energized.

Sassy is the key with My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, especially with the guitar crunchy "Sex On Wheelz," with its hard-driving vocals. "Her Sassy Kiss" is different, with whirly synthesizers and brassy inclusions.

The last three songs belong to the ambient category, with Pure's "Greedy," Brian Eno's "Under" and Tom Bailey's sexy and seductive "Industry And Seduction," complete with grinding metal on rock, whizzing sounds, sirens, light whips, and panting. "Under" brings about the contemplative image of staring at the stars, with the neon lights aglitter below in the never sleeping city from a high floor apartment window.

A case where the soundtrack is leagues more superior than the movie, and where the techno/industrial/ambient unity is achieved.

4 out of 5 stars "Cool" Soundtrack........2002-03-06

I thought the movie was good, but this cd is great. It's pretty much a good sampler of early 90's electronica and industrial music. "David Bowie" starts with a song that's as good as anything he's done in the past 11 years. There's a couple early tracks from "Moby" that are sweet. The whole disc is suprisingly good, right to the last instrumental track, which jumps from speaker to speaker. But the real punch comes from "Ministry", "The Cult", and "My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult". Those three songs are awesome. If all soundtracks were this good, it really would be a "Cool World".

5 out of 5 stars Bad movie, great soundtrack.......2001-02-18

Too often, great movies produce soundtrack albums that don't reflect the quality of the movies they come from. Sometimes, though, lousy movies have wonderful soundtracks that deserve to exist separately from the dreck that spawned them, and "Songs from The Cool World" is one such album. The movie it comes from might be weak, but the CD represents a terrific sampler of early technodance songs from the likes of Thompson Twins, Mindless, The Future Sound of London and, of course, the acknowledged master of techno, Moby; a couple of his earliest hits can be found here. There are also tunes from David Bowie (who does the lead track), Ministry and Brian Eno. My fave track, though, and the reason I bought the album in the first place, is "Sex on Wheelz," a fun, rowdy, nasty song that plays hard from beginning to end.

In short, this is a fun, varied, thoroughly danceable soundtrack CD that far exceeds the quality of the movie it's attached to. Skip "Cool World," but buy the album and dial it up.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Ecstasty.......2000-04-15

This is a Must-Have soundtrack if you like New Wave, electronic/techno music - almost every song is outstanding. Especially cool tracks are Electronic's Disappointed (side project of New Order's Benard Sumner and Smith's Johnny Marr, guest vocals Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant), Moby's Ah-Ah, David Bowie's 'Real Cool World', & Future Sound of London's Papua New Guinea.

The term Irish tenor may be fraught with as many wrong-headed, anachronistic characterizations as any phrase in music. But Ronan Tynan not only returns here to the PBS airwaves that helped spread his fame as a member of the Irish Tenors trio, but he overturns a few clichés while delivering a live concert (recorded at the Royal Dublin Society in June 2002) that encompasses everything from Broadway and pop chestnuts to Italian operatic repertoire. Tynan rewards Irish traditions old and new (a medley of Brian Kennedy's and U2's "Life, Love & Happiness"/"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") and even makes left turns into folkie songstress territory (Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sarah McLachlan's "Angel"). Backed by RTE Orchestra, the unlikely international star invests himself completely in all of it, his strong, crystalline voice playing off the traditions, while forging strong new bonds with the contemporary. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2005-08-29

This CD is just as great as the more recent "Ronan" CD. I clicked on 3 stars in error. This is a 5++ star album! His voice is sheer perfection, and the songs are wonderful. I also highly recommend the DVD of "The Impossible Dream," even though I didn't care at all for the London Community Choir who sing four songs. Note: The American version of the DVD doesn't have the 25-minute "Dr. Courageous" extra on it that the Irish version does. I saw him in concert last month, and besides having a voice that soars to the rafters, he is warm, funny and endearing.

I've always been a rock and roll fan since back in the 60's. Listening to this cd could easily convert me into a classical music fan as well. Wow what a voice.

Having seen Ronan in person recently in the U.S., I was impressed first and foremost by his singing ability, and second by his stage presence and warmth. He is a special performer and human being. I am proud to be a Ronan Tynan fan.

I am not a fan of this kind of music, but I bought this after hearing a few sound snippets at amazon and WoW! what a find. Excellent song selection, powerful singing, fine music quality for a live recording. Expand your horizons and enjoy. (get this wayno)

ronan tynan is a great role model for adults and children alike. he was born with a deformity and made a decision he would make something of himself, he had a goal and he surpassed it. no one puts as much of their heart into as he. he puts the audience into his songs, he makes us feel he is singing to each one of us individually. HE IS THE GREATEST IRISH TENOR I HAVE EVER HEARD, INCLUDING JOHN MC CORMAC the great irish tenor of the 30's

If the American pop culture profile of French composer-jazz pianist Michel Legrand doesn't seem what it once was, don't be misled: his European indie film scores continue six decades on, now numbering nearly 200. But Legrand's most beloved work remains the lovely, evocative themes he created in the '60s and '70s, including "I Will Wait for You" from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Thomas Crown Affair's "Windmills of Your Mind," the theme from Summer of '42, and his work on Barbra Streisand's Yentl. This collection marks Legrand's first solo piano recordings, presenting those and other film score highlights in spontaneously improvised performances that offer a glimpse of Legrand's musical soul. If, as in "Windmills," his enthusiasm gets the best of him and he occasionally lapses into flights of melodramatic pianistic self-parody, there are more than enough sublime moments here to compensate, especially on lesser-known songs like Best Friends' "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" from The Happy Ending, and Brian's Song's "Hands of Time." --Jerry McCulley

This is a great CD! Sound is awesome. I highly recommend it.

Sunlight on his fingertips

The very bright talent of Michele Legrand you can feel especially when Maestro is playing piano himself.

I heard some orchestra performance of Legrand before, that was good, but I was still thinking about him just like about pop music composer.

Now I think different - he is Genius!

5 out of 5 stars all the stars you've got.......2005-01-29

Bill Evans once said that technique in jazz "is the ability to translate your ideas into sound through your instrument." If that's the case, Legrand possesses technique in spades.

Before commenting on this rewarding disc, a few words about Legrand himself:

Is there a better songwriter or a more versatile all-around musican alive today? I think you have to go back to people like Gershwin and Billy Strayhorn to find a rough parallel to Legrand's multifaceted, genre-crossing genius. A pupil of Nadia Boulanger (who studied with Faure and taught many important American composers, including Aaron Copland and Philip Glass), Legrand is an heir of the great French tradition of music--but one who has chosen to express himself through popular songs, film scores, and jazz. He possesses that rare combination of an absolutely rigorous theoretical knowledge of music and an intuitive, spontaneous instinct for both melody and improvisation. He combines exquisite refinement with a popular touch, a need to communicate directly with all who love music. To me, his work represents the most perfect expression of such typically French traits as lightness, insouciance, wit, melodic charm, and direct emotional expression since Poulenc.

Here you'll find many of Legrand's signature songs--"I Will Wait for You," "The Windmills of Your Mind," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?," "The Hands of Time," "You Must Believe in Spring," etc.--reharmonized and enriched in stunningly beautiful solo recreations. Those unfamiliar with Legrand's pianistic abilities will probably be surprised by what they hear, for he's no part-time piano tickler. He can easily hold his own in the company of the best modern jazz pianists. He has a wonderfully refined touch that is incapable of making a harsh sound and a profusive sense of fantasy that keeps you constantly guessing as to where the music will go next. Yet you always feel satisfied when you find out, because Legrand possesses a composer's comprehension of harmony and form. And his own style is in no way compromised by an occasional nod here and there toward Bill Evans, Erroll Garner, Rachmaninoff, and so on. (Please: disregard the Amazon reviewer's remark about "flights of melodramatic pianistic self-parody." It's called a stride chorus, and it's just one example of Legrand's surprising way of recasting these songs--and of his encyclopedic command of jazz styles.)

This disc represents the essence of Legrand. It really should have been recorded a long time ago, but the fact that it has captured his undiminished abilities as he enters his twilight years lends it an added poignance--a sense of "just in time!"--that makes it all the sweeter. If you're already a Legrand fan, it should be a self-recommending treasure, and if you're a fan of great piano playing or of sophisticated jazz treatments of great songs, odds are you'll find this a very rewarding disc indeed. For me, the highlight is this version of "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" in which every note seems inevitable--not at all an easy thing to make happen in an improvisation.

Miles Davis once said of a Duke Ellington recording, "Give that one all the stars you've got." That's the way I feel about this disc, and I thought that phrase "all the stars you've got" was appropriate because it almost sounds like the title of a Legrand song.

5 out of 5 stars Maestro Legrand , at last !.......2004-10-10

Legrand has recorded at last one of his more intimate renditions to himself with his most remarkable themes along his brilliant career .
From a summer of 42 , The windmills of your mind (The Thomas crown afair) , what are you doing the rest of your life or the romantic Umbrellas of Cherbourg ; all those unforgettable themes are played in this album for piano solo in the real intimacy between him and the listener .
Legrand is the golden master of soundtracks in France and one of the top in the world . He owns that inner vision to catch the spirit of every movie he accompains . He composes music as he was a real director movie . The psychological concerns , the romantic efluvies and the precise and lyrical atmosphere , with that touch of class, artistic elegance and sublime eloquency .
Think also in the important recordings with Miles Davis . That issue will give you the size of that artist and anothe point to remark . In 1954 , Legrand made a golden jewel : I lvoe Paris (See my review) that has become through the years in the most famous and the best album of instrumental music ever recorded .
What other background do you need to acquire this gem ?

4 out of 5 stars For Jazz piano purest... Only!.......2002-09-07

I love the music of Michele Legrand! It is a rich mixture of
graceful tones and notes, that create memories of a certain
time and place in each of our own lives.
When accompaned with great orchestration Its wonderful. When done in a jazz piano style, its not as good. Not to take anyting away from the talents of Mr Legrand as a pianist. Its just that like hearing a lusher, grander version of his music. So if you like jazz piano music, and Michele Legrand.
Then this is the cd for you!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "We-Wewease Bwian!".......2007-05-07

And the Lord said, let there be re-issues...

Unfortunately, the word "NEW" is a major mis-nomer here. The liner notes are from 1999's "Monty Python Encyclopedia",and the artwork is someone's cut and past job of some "OLD" Terry Gilliam artwork.( And the film photos are not exactly revelations either.)

This album is amusing. Not their best soundtrack, but funny,as Eric Idle as "The Producer",and Graham Chapman as the "Dyslexic Voice Over",attempt to make sense of the film "Life Of Brian" and someone's badly scribbled notes. ( Brian apparently is chased by Lobsters! ). The Bonus Material is the real reason to repurchase this album, and that is your dilema!

"Otto Sketch" and "Otto Song" both appeared on the Critereon DVD version of the film. ( As did the radio ads.). "Otto Song Demo" is a funny alternate version that sounds like a German Barroom-lads around the old piano sing-a-long."Brian Song (Alternate Version)" is still sung by Sonia Jones, with alternate lyrics, and sounding slightly less Shirley Bassey/"Goldfinger". It's interesting to hear, but ultimately, the one finally used, was the wiser choice.

The Bonus tracks are a bit skimpy. So choose wisely!

5 out of 5 stars A fine collection, well recorded, & a bargain, to boot!.......2005-10-08

This collection of pieces is a real treat for RVW fans. The recordings of Flos campi (surely one of RVW's most unusual and mystical works, somehow managing to capture the elusive emotional/spiritual environment of the Song of Solomon) and the Suite for Viola and Orchestra (rarely recorded, but a delectable mixing of folk-song, Bach, Bartok-like passages, and rich, resonant melodies redolent of autumn) would be enough in themselves. Couple them with the Six Studies in English Folksong for clarinet & piano (a rare piece of Vaughn Williams chamber music) and the ravishing instrumental version of Serenade to Music, and you have a truly admirable set. This is an assemblage of a number of earlier recordings: in this case, I think, the cream has been skimmed and put into one convenient two-disc collection. The recorded sound is good throughout, and the notes well-written and interesting - an excellent Chandos release.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect and otherworldly.......2003-10-06

I am a rock musician but I must say that there is little other music on this green earth that is as gorgeous as that of Vaughan Williams. Some folk and country airs can touch the melancholy that VW can, some of Bach's or Ravel's pieces maybe. But when I hear music like Flos Campi 2nd and 6th movements, or the beautiful short pieces that comprise Six Studies in English Folk Song ... well, they leave me breathless. Parts of Flos Campi sounds like VW has distilled all the tinsel and magic, childlike wonder and true peace of something as hard to define as Christmas and made it into music. Serenade to Music in it's pure orchestral form still remains a glorius composition, even without the vocalists. My, when it hits that early theme in the latter part with full force and orchestra ... And the lovely Linden Lea and that wonderful Suite ... Almost too much. I sometimes program this and some of his major works, such as Tallis, Dives and Lazarus and The Lark Ascending (when I have some time to spare!): it's a big 'wow' factor. VW's music is unashamedly beautiful, capturing the sweetest folk elements and conjuring up the spirit of the wildest and most remote parts of Britain (in my head at least). This music is something else and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Some of broadway's best singers are on this album, including Brian Stokes Mitchell, Debbie Gravitte, Marin Mazzie, and Rebecca Luker. (The cd is worth buying for Rebecca Luker's song alone!) The songs are beautifully orchestrated and sung. Most are light hearted and fun, leaving me with a good feeling when listening.
If you're a fan of broadway showtunes, I believe you'll enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2003-02-15

Every possible CD that Brian has made is totally superb. Brian is totally awesome, I had the privelege of being at several of his concerts back in Northern Ireland and not only is he worth listening too his is a humble yet exceptionally talented man. Try to buy as many of his albums as you can, he is big back home!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent stuff.......2003-01-07

Brian's voice is just superb. I saw him live in Ireland last week and he just blew me away. The power of his voice, the sheer entertainer in him was just superb. And he stuck around the concert afterwards to talk with fans and take photos with them. Now that's someone who isn't full of himself. Not many entertainers would do that.

5 out of 5 stars VOICE OF AN ANGEL!!.......2002-12-27

I've had the pleasure of seeing Brian perform live three times when he came to NY for Riverdance. He's an amazing singer and performer. I get goosebumps just listening to him croon. This album really makes you feel as if each word is coming from his heart. Some of the songs are just so personal it's like he's sitting down talking to ya. Anywho, I highly recommend this CD.(And did I mention he's absolutely gorgeous !)

5 out of 5 stars Another UK singer who deserves more recogniton in the States.......2002-07-19

I was first introduced to Brian Kennedy because I am a huge fan of British singer/actor Michael Ball... with whom Brian has co-written a number of songs. (Brian also appears on Michael's "Christmas" cd dueting "Silent Night.") His voice I can only describe as beautiful... Try this album and see for yourself!

The tracks are mainly soft pop/rock with some Celtic influence on some (though maybe I just think that because Kennedy has an adorable Irish accent!) :) I know that Kennedy is a great fan of Joni Mitchell's and their styles are not altogether distant. Most of the songs on this album Brian wrote or co-wrote, and I love his lyrics! My favourite is probably the cover track, "Get on With Your Short Life" which is definitely a feel-good song. Many of the other lyrics and medleys are great as well... I'd highly recommend this cd to anyone that has heard Brian and would like to hear more.

One final note, this is the UK release of the album, which features several more tracks (including a remix of "Get on With Your Short Life") than the original Irish release. I'd recommend either CD!
