Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for wedding planners.......2007-04-05
I work regularly with people planning church weddings who want the service to be dignified, traditional and formal. Often they have "ear memory" of music they've heard in other weddings, but no idea about its composer or title. This CD is the best compilation I've found of music that fits those requirements. Selections include great music and performances make it easy to imagine how they would sound in a particular church or other setting. Includes works by Protestant, Catholic and secular composers.
Great item!.......2007-03-29
Great CD! Perfect when planning your wedding music. There are a variety of songs from various composers.
Preview your wedding day.......2006-08-14
This CD was inexpensive, and provided a great way to preview songs for my wedding. The CD had a good song selection. My fiance and I were able to get a better idea of how the songs would be at our wedding. Definitely an inexpensive tool that is worthwhile.

My daughter had to move her wedding 3 weeks before the event and the music she had arranged could not be there. I purchased this CD and we were thrilled with the price, the selections on the cd and how quickly it arrived. Thanks for providing the music for a beautiful wedding.

This is an excellent CD for a formal wedding, so-so for a casual one.

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2007-06-15
I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.
Awesome.......2007-06-12
This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.
Excellent Music tracks from Movie.......2007-05-03
Brings the movie back as you listen to the full version of the track.
Complete?.......2007-04-07
This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.
Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03
I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

For a band with such an overarching legacy, the official record of Led Zeppelin's legendary--and unpredictable--live act has heretofore been poorly represented by the disappointing, scattershot soundtrack to The Song Remains the Same. But this triple-disc live set (culled from 1972 Long Beach/LA shows in advance of Houses of the Holy) addresses history with a vengeance, if a few decades late. These shows have rightfully assumed cult status in the bootleg market, showcasing a band at the peak of its creative and performing powers. Zep faithful will welcome the belated release as evidence for enduring loyalty, but younger fans may find its diversity and dynamics even more enlightening--indeed, whole careers have since been built on the musical ideas Jimmy Page and company toss off here as decorative filler. Crucially rooted in the amped-and-hammered American blues of the guitarist's former band, the Yardbirds, the marathon workouts of "Dazed and Confused" and "Whole Lotta Love" (which consume nearly an hour all by themselves) somehow encompass Ricky Nelson, Morocco, James Brown, Holst, Elvis Presley, and Muddy Waters amidst their trademark sturm und drang, while the acoustic set that closes out disc one showcases the band's--and particularly Robert Plant's--good-natured, crypto-Celtic folk appeal with energetic aplomb. Bigger and brasher than just about any rock act that followed in its historic wake, yet ever fan-loyal to its myriad influences, Led Zeppelin's live juggernaut finally gets the monument it deserves. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
This is THE Live Led Zep experience you must have!.......2007-07-13
I've always really loved the studio-recorded Zeppelin hits that everyone knows, but until now I hadn't heard a live performance that really knocked me out. This release is absolutely fantastic and amazing. Truly better live than the studio sound. The music is timeless and doesn't sound the least bit old or dated. You need to get this 3 disc set to understand the importance of the musical legacy of Jimmy Page and the boys.
1972 was a good year. A very very good year........2007-07-07
Do we really need another review of what is quickly becoming the definitive live album of Zepplin? Probably not. But is that gonna stop me from saying what an immensely satisfying live album this is? Heck no!
1972 was the year we saw Pink Floyd's Obscured by Clouds, the Grateful Dead's Europe '72, Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, and Lou Reed's Transformer. Could there be any more room for brilliance? You bet!
By this stage of their career, Zepplin was functioning on another plane of existence, but fortunately they'd gate in from time to time and share the majesty of their creations. Prepare to fail those will saves.
Rock and Roll.......2007-06-29
This was made at Rock's peak and Zeppelin's Peak it has all the essentials except for When the Levee Break's.
As for all of those studiophile's who are afraid of Live music take a chance this has been produced with the utmost care and Zepp outside of the Dead, The Who, Pink Floyd and Blue Note had the best of everything. The sound quality is great except for a few songs that they rush through but that was how they performed back then like every performance was going to be thier last. For the icing on the cake John Bonham is on FIRE. I have been wanting this for years after I heard it at a buddy's house don't hesitate any longer this is a must for the summer and for your ears.
Best Live Album Ever.......2007-06-23
This is without a doubt a mind-blowing collection, from the first to the third CD, clear and refined recordings of Led Zeppelin's California concerts from 1972. You will not be able to sit still, I guarantee you that, and if you are not up on your feet stomping along with Robert's vocals and Jimmy's guitar and John Bonam's driving drums, with the groovy bass of John Paul Jones from the very start, then you are not a rocker!
The first CD is my favorite one, starting with the good old hard rock we love Zeppelin for, and no one could do like them, songs like ""Immigrant Song", and of course, "Heartbreaker", the wailing bluesy "Since I've been loving you", then the brilliant,"Stairway to Heaven", with Robert Plant's comments adding a touch of familiarity and charm ("You remember laughter?"), continuing with the finest acoustic version of "California", and "That's the Way", ending with "Bron-Yr-Aur-Stomp", Robert Plant's song for Strider, his dog.
The third disc has a spectacular version of "The Ocean", so fine!
Do I recommend this album? Yes!!! Most definitely, and it will most likely become the most prized CD in your rock collection as soon as you hear it.
Why Rock and Roll is supposed to be played live.......2007-04-07
I will leave the track by track analysis to others. I just simply want to say that this serves as a stunning reminder of what Rock was all about. The energy and passion pouring out of these performance will leave you dumbfounded. And remind you that no over dubbed studio recording can ever match this peerless band in full flight.

Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
pure genius.......2007-05-21
No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection
Another great Yo-Yo Disc.......2007-05-15
The set-up with the classical pieces on the first disc and the other on the second is excellent.
first disc great- second a flop.......2007-04-12
the first disc is awesome. the second disc is weird and boring.
Encore.......2007-03-31
Incredible. My young cellist (son) loves it. Beautiful music. The album is well organized and each song transitions nicely.
The Versatile Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-03-29
I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

Album Description
New Orleans-based blues singer & guitarist
Bryan Lee has been honing his craft for several decades, standing tall as a powerful force on the blues scene. He's an awesome guitarist, a passionate singer and a noted mentor to many younger players, most notably
Kenny Wayne Shepherd, on whose new Reprise/WEA CD+DVD set Bryan guests, along with B. B. King, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins, Double Trouble and others. This Justin Time set, produced by
Duke Robillard, is his sixth studio recording and shows he's at the top of his game.
As Duke says, "Let Bryan Lee grab your soul and squeeze it till you scream in blues ecstasy!"

Harvard-educated mathematician by trade and sociopolitical humorist and satirist by avocation, ivory tickler Tom Lehrer sang irreverent ditties that both outraged and delighted listeners during his on-again, off-again heyday of public performance in the late 1950s through the 1970s. Perhaps best known for his "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park," Lehrer combined razor-sharp wit with dry delivery inspired by everything from vaudeville and ragtime to whimsical show tunes and faux folk. Though a tad dated, Lehrer's wickedly pointed That Was the Year That Was is as good a representation of the mid-'60s American social and political climate as any. Recorded live in 1965 and composed largely of songs from the contemporaneous NBC series That Was the Week That Was, the album takes on boho Americana ("The Folk Song Army"), censorship ("Smut"), and the atomic bomb ("Who's Next"). Devilishly funny as well are the outstanding "Vatican Rag" and the puzzle that is "New Math." --Paige La Grone
Customer Reviews:
Great fun.......2007-05-20
Recently our youngest son told us he was teaching his daughter So long Mom, I'm Off to Drop the Bomb. He remembered the words from playing our old records when he was a teen ager. Now the words and melodies keep popping into my head. Throughly enjoyed this CD-much better quality than the old records.
TW3 Lives!.......2007-03-30
1965 is looking better every year when one can go back and enjoy Tom Lehrer. Some songs are specific to the date but others (like "Alma") can be enjoyed forever. The concert version (at the "hungry i" in San Francisco) adds so much to this album, huh, CD. Lehrer chips in his funny introductions and the audience laughs heartily. He knows how to pause for the laugh at just the right moment. If only we had Tom Lehrer nowadays to poke fun at our foibles and politics.
That Was the Year That Was.......2007-03-24
This is a superb collection of Tom Lehrer's most memorable songs: funny and smart, sparing none and satirizing all.
This CD never goes out of style!.......2007-02-21
I first heard this album in the late sixties and purchased it for the sake of nostalgia. Hard to believe how timely his satire continues to be today. From "Who's Got the Bomb" to "Send in the Marines" to "Pollution" and throughout, almost all of the songs on the CD are still relevant. Tom Lehrer was one of the all-time great satirical songwriters and I still laugh out loud when I listen to his stuff.
It's people like this who make you wonder what you've really accomplished........2007-02-10
It's a sobering thought to realize that, when Tom Lehrer was my age, he had been retired for ten years.

Hundreds of compilation recordings have been thrust on the market in recent years on the theory that classical music makes a nice, non-threatening accompaniment to everything from working out to making love. And here we have one compilation promising to make your baby smarter. It's offensive enough that the music featured on these compilations is spliced up so that the most you hear of any work is a single movement; what's really annoying is the poor quality of so many of the featured performances. So it is some consolation that the artists here include such 20th-century legends as the Cleveland Orchestra under Szell and the Budapest String Quartet with Mieczyslaw Horszowski. Of course if these folks were alive, one can imagine their violent objection to this presentation of their work. --Gwendolyn Freed
Customer Reviews:
Build Baby's Brain through Classics Vol 1.......2006-07-25
I am a true fan of Classical music and this was purchased as a gift for a co-worker who is adopting a child from China. Therefore I did not open it nor listen to it. The recipient is now overseas picking up their daughter so I know they haven't had the opportunity to listen to it. I think it's a great idea, though, and purchased a used set for my Grandson.
Wonderful stimulating music for baby.......2006-06-23
I am sorry for the previous review who said that intelligence is hereditary. If that is true, all mankind would have been doomed from the start.
Intelligence is not hereditary, but rather a result of stimulation during infancy and birth. Sure, it isn't a guarantee that your child *will* become a genius if you attempt to educate them from birth, but there is no doubt that real educational stimulation of a young mind is a powerful indicator that the child will be more advanced than the average child.
Music is not just notes played. Music--real music--is everything. Though the music of today will fade, classical music will always be around because it is classic. It fits no matter what era you place it in. There is always a home for it. The artists are timeless just as the beautiful melodies are.
I certainly believe that babies who listen to music will become more familiar with and more easily understand music and instruments. Therefore, they will be quicker of mind. It is just a fact that people who play instruments are usually of higher intelligence.
I don't think that people are destined to be stupid or geniuses. I believe it is a question of environment. I feel I'm a great mother but I haven't done everything I could have been doing to help my son's mind expand as an infant. Now that he is a toddler (18 months) I am teaching him to read and exposing him to the magic of classical music in hopes that it will help mold him and set him apart from the rest.
Minds are trainable. You just have to work at it. This CD compiled of beautiful pieces composed by instrumental geniuses will help you do just that.
The greatest CD!!.......2006-01-17
I received this CD free when I had my first baby and it instantly became my fav cd of all time. I have it on my computer and I had another copy made because I just can not imagine not having it.
And as for the comment that the music has nothing to do with intellingence, you stand alone on that front. Besides, what does it hurt? It's great, soothing music and the babies enjoy it.
Forget baby, it's mine?.......2005-09-01
I love my child, but the first time I heard this CD, It immediately went from her recorder to mine. I take it practically everywhere I go. I know it's technically "Her" CD, but the selections are so soothing; and you need that type of comfort when stuck in traffic. Honestly, we both enjoy it - and I'm glad someone thought enough to give it as a gift.
Love this CD--why all the complaints?.......2004-08-30
I'm not sure what people were expecting when they purchased this. For one thing it tells you exactly what is on the CD. Its not a mystery!! If you buy it on amazon it has listed every title on it so I"m not sure about the people who said they were dissapointed because they already own those titles. Obviously you should glance at the list of titles on this CD if you have a large classical collection already. However if you don't already have a classical collection this is by far excellent .I'll be honest and admit I listen to one of the volumes daily regardless of who is in the room. It's marketed for babies but it is really for anyone. There are SO many classical pieces out there. What they have done is to take the best of the best and also the ones that are known to appeal to babies. For some reason many reviewers thing they just took a random sampling of classical music. In reality they have put together those that appeal most to children. I can tell you that my 1 year old daughter actually dances to these. She really likes them a lot. I consider the whole collection a must have for any household.

Chronicling The Replacements' gloriously tempestuous decade on a single disc ostensibly seems akin to reading Cliff's Notes for the New Testament: No sooner do you grow fond of the protagonist than they've nailed him up. And if that comparison sounds a tad sacrilegious, perhaps you underestimate the Mats' hallowed place in modern rock history--and the hearts of their ardent fans. Yet somehow even this condensed format focuses the songs of Paul Westerberg and playing of bandmates Bob and Tommy Stinson and drummer Chris Mars into a dramatic arc that can't be denied. The initial tracks of this 20-track collection display a band joyously besotted by nascent punk thrash, yet one not so different from the scores of similar bands tearing up local clubs in the '80s.
But by the time of Hootenanny's "Color Me Impressed" and "Within Your Reach," something magical was clearly happening within Westerberg's songwriting and the band at large, even if it was largely inspired by terminal boredom, perpetual discontent, no small amount of alcohol--and an indifference to success that was one of their greatest charms. Within two years they'd produce one of the decade's--and perhaps rock history's--most compelling albums with Let It Be and the indie movement's first grassroots anthem in "Unsatisfied." They followed it up with Tim, a collection where Westerberg seemed able to conjure similar generational marching orders ("Here Comes a Regular," "Bastards of Young," "Left of the Dial") with preternatural ease; enraptured rock critics probably thought harder about his music than he ever did. Though highlighted by such gems as "Alex Chilton," "Skyway" and such pop-smart swan songs as "I'll Be You" and "Merry Go Round," the Mats' third act dissolved into the expected, if equally star-crossed solo career for Westerberg and the tragic death of Bob Stinson, events which can't help but cast a melancholy shadow over the unexpectedly gritty new old stock recordings "Message to the Boys" and "Pool & Dive." --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
The ragged and glorious alt-rock of The Replacements made them one of the greatest and most iconic American bands of the 1980s, and inspired countless groups to come. Fronted by lead singer, pianist/guitarist, and principal songwriter Paul Westerberg, these heroes of post-punk/pre-grunge rock `n' roll fused garage band greatness with powerful pop beauty. Fueled by both thrashing energy and a lyrical and emotive sonic flow, The Replacements' kamikaze live shows and richly textured albums made them music legends.
Customer Reviews:
Love from Minneapolis.......2007-03-25
How can anyone who lives in the muck of a society that prizes commerce, populism, media savvy, and dumbed-down entertainment above all else be surprised how little popular success or money or fame the Replacements achieved in their career? But our same American culture of mass-produced cr*p-by-committee fertilized their existence, out of which sprang this wondrous musical art, an art that is nevertheless woefully underrepresented in this single CD.
Not to bleat too much, but how does Rhino justify the omission of Androgynous and Swingin' Party, which, in all of their weird, surreal, organic, raw, sloppy beauty, epitomized the immediacy that helped make Let It Be and Tim the greatest back-to-back albums by any artist in the 1980s? These songs only get better with repeated listening, unlike the Mats' pre-Let It Be punk efforts that sound like the kind of speed metal that gives skateboarding fanboys hard-ons but grows increasingly tiresome with age.
It is funny to me that as their music matured and became more melodic and interesting, many of these same fanboys accused the Mats of selling out. That instinct to keep bands stuck in perpetual adolescence always drags down great music, but thankfully, Westerberg and Co. resisted, although at the unfortunate loss of a bandmate.
Despite missing some vital tunes, I still give this album five stars for Rhino's good sense to include Answering Machine and Here Comes a Regular, and because it is still the Replacements, who even at their worst could puke out better music than the soulless, high-polish, overproduced dreck that wins Grammy awards. If there is any justice, the Mats will be fast-tracked into the RnR Hall, thus affording them the opportunity to give the middle finger to industry tastemakers who overlooked them in their prime.
What, yet another Mats compilation album?.......2007-01-16
Yeah, Yeah, this has the Twin Tone recordings that All For Nothing did not have. Sure, that makes this a better compilation of hits (what hits?) album. However, where All For Nothing had a disc of rairities, this one hopes to entice Mats fans with two new recordings. Uhh, correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Paul released like four (at least) solo albums since leaving the Mats (one could argue that the last Mats album was a Paul solo album)? I guess, Paul's solo works are different when he attaches the Mats name to it? So, uhhh, why exactly should you buy this CD? Well, if you are a fan and already have all of their stuff, there is no reason to buy this CD. I mean, come on. Chris was so indifferent about this project that he did not even bother playing drums on the two new cuts and Bob is dead. What, did you really miss hearing Tommy's bass-playing that much? Listen to some GnR for crying out loud. LOL
A Great Best-of.......2007-01-11
I'm going to keep this short and sweet: The Replacements are a "glorious footnote" in the history of rock music, a band that didn't sell enough to make an impact when they were together (at least on the superficial charts of the Eighties), but I guarentee every indie band that followed had a record or two and practiced "Can't Hardly Wait" or "Kiss Me on The Bus" to learn their instruments.
So if you're wondering what all the fuss is about, pick up this disc. I owned Hootenanny for a while back in the day, but foolishly let it slip out of my hands. So when I saw this disc, I had to get it. You can't understand alternative rock without the Replacements, REM, Joy Division, and Mission of Burma.
Do yourself a favor and get this, you won't regret it.
One Historic CD.......2006-12-19
For a compilation, this CD is awesome. It follows the Replacements from their punk rock roots to their more polished sound (lyrics and music). One of the best aspects of the Replacements was their refusal to apologize for not being famous rock stars. Sure, the critics loved them, and LET IT BE is on many top spots of top rock and roll albums of all time (as well it should be). Still, they never found the ultra-glamorous rock star lifestyle that so many seek. And their music is better for it.
The best way to listen to this is on a long, autumn drive on backroads, with the windows down and the volume loud. If you still have one of those archaic tape recorders, record a compilation tape and throw in some greats from this album. It only gets better with age.
And to address my own review title, I wish this had been two CDs. Or three.
Great one disc Best of, Excellent with 2 new songs, but so short........2006-12-05
This ablum is the cream of the Replacements catalog, but its hard not to want all of their music on this. It does not hit their twintone years, which I am suprised has not been done yet (the did it for soul asylum). But, this covers their sire years well, and is greatly complimented by the best of Paul Westerberg CD. A good starter CD, but also check out the "all for nothing/nothing for all" greatest hits released years ago, 2 cds of music with the second disc being B sides and rare recordings. You'll want all the replacements Albums after you get this one anyway, their addicting.

Album matches content hype.......2007-05-31
I intially bought this album for a few selections I had heard from Classical 102.1 (KDFC-FM). I was pleasantly surprised that the entire album has a very satisfying collection of the greatest marches. I am very pleased with this album, and would recommend it for anyone who likes a broad range of famous marches.
Fun.......2007-01-21
This CD would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys marches. Some of the marches are popular, others are not. All are well-performed and can be enjoyed - LOUDLY!
invigorating!.......2006-12-05
Great recordings of stirring music. I like to play it loud while my kids and I clean house. It makes it go by fast.
Totally awesome!.......2005-03-27
My father was a Marine in the ETC, he told me stories about how they went floor to floor checking for bad guys humming this music. I think it is great music to listen to, I really like track 3, it says so much in the title alone. I hope everybody like this music as much as I do!

Take a Chance.......2007-06-29
Some excellent things in life take a little getting used to. This album might be one. The first time I heard it I thought it was pretentious at best, and quite possibly insufferable. But the album wouldn't let me reject it. I listened again. Bit by bit, it grew on me. And then I tumbled all the way. There was a period when this was the only CD I wanted to play, over and over.
People have made connections between Siberry and Kate Bush and other artists. You might as well throw Laurie Anderson in there. Like Anderson, Siberry can be extremely likable while taking you to some spooky places.
If you want an entry point to the album, use the one that worked for me. The duet with K D Lang, "Calling All Angels," is just stunning. The lyrics are poetry. The melody will haunt your dreams. The performance will almost surely leave you a changed person.
Quirky? God yes! And that can be a good thing.
Haunting and amazing spirit...........2007-05-25
Whenever I feel sad about someone passing......2 or 3 times in the last few years, all I need is "Calling All Angels" to make me feel supported and in touch with human spirit....
Unique.......2005-08-24
Soul-full emotions from the core of hurt and success. Most likely hurt first and then success. If you're in a mood to listen to words and let them touch you, this is a CD for you. Some of the music accompanying the lyrics is good but does require an open mind to appreciate Siberry's expression of the art and her interpretation of it.
Reflective, different, and a bit depressing, but still unique.
In the Words of Kate Bush: Wow, Wow, Wow, Unbelievable!.......2005-03-14
The eternal feminine drives us on...
Well, it does seem that women artists do often manage to go places inaccessible to their male counterparts. I've been hearing about Jane Siberry for years and have (inexcusably) put off listening to her work until just recently. Like Kate Bush and Laura Nyro, she creates an entire poetic universe that you enter into willingly but not without some risk.
Interesting how this album builds. On first hearing, I found the first couple of songs ("Temple" and "Calling All Angels") instantly captivating but found much of the rest of the album, challenging. The songs seem to become a bit more amorphous as the album progressed, with some of the later tracks sounding more like aural collages than true songs.
But with each additional hearing, the album gels more. The more "difficult" songs don't seem quite so formidable as one gets accustomed to their subtleties. "Angel Stepped Down," "Vigil" and "At the Beginning of Time" are darn near brilliant in fact. After several listenings, I find the album is a near perfect whole, with each track leading into the next almost seamlessly.
I'd rate this Siberry effort right up there with such classics at Kate Bush's THE DREAMING, Nico's THE MARBLE INDEX and Laura Nyro's ELI AND THE 13TH CONFESSION. Which is to say, Jane Siberry rates pretty high in my own personal pantheon. Now on to the rest of the Siberry oeuvre.
A Musical Journey That Captures Much of Life.......2005-03-10
Many of these reviews sound over done, but this is the real thing - an musical journey that is so intimate about love, death, spirtuality, with the joy of music thrown in, that it makes me happy to be alive.
Not for everyone, but neither is introspection!
