5 out of 5 stars JEFF BALL'S NEW CD COMBINES NATIVE FLUTE AND THE NEW SPACE-AGE HANG INSTRUMENT.......2007-03-29

Over the course of ten albums, Jeff Ball has come to be recognized as one of the premier players of wooden American Indian flutes. Jeff has always been one of the most progressive and innovative wood flutists, both melodically and with his arrangements. This album is no exception because instead of using a traditional drum kit as before, his band's drummer plays space-age dome-metal instrument called a hang (pronounced like gong) which was only invented in 2001. The hang is played like a hand-drum, but combines rhythm and melodies (notes and chords can be played on it).

On THE SHAPE OF LIGHT Ball brings modern sounds together with those from an American Indian culture thousands of years old, he also draws musical inspiration from the world around him (the tunes "Tranquility," "Finding Promise," "Never Alone") as well as from ancient native images and traditions ("Escape Of The Medicine Man," "In Buffalo Skin," "Drawing In Embers").

THE SHAPE OF LIGHT is more acoustic, improvisational and meditative than previous Jeff Ball albums. Two of the tunes are in the ten-minute jam-band range. If you enjoy cutting-edge new music mixing traditional native flute with more modern European-invented instruments, this CD will probably appeal to you.

4 out of 5 stars Trippy Hippy Prog-Rock Fave.......2007-04-18

I first heard this album in the summer of '73 when my best friend's older brother played it for us. We were only six at the time and our musical tastes were being shaped by our older siblings' record collections, as well as Top 40 radio of the day. Rare Bird's 8 track provided a lot to listen to and one track, Hey Man, was played over and over again. After about a week or so, we had moved on to other stuff and didn't listen to the tape anymore.

This past weekend, I was visiting St. Louis with my wife and daughter and stopped in to a small independent music store. Lo and behold, there was a used import copy of Epic Forest. As we drove, I popped it into my car's player and hit track 2, Hey Man. To my surprise, I not only remembered all the words, but recalled the riffs and instrumentation as well. After 34 years, mind you! The disc holds up and is great stuff.

"Here I'm standing alone, on my island, watching as the world and people pass and things go by..."

Cool Stuff.

5 out of 5 stars New, expanded Rare Bird with a mellower, more acoustic sound.......2006-06-18

After As Your Mind Flies By, the original Rare Bird broke up, with organist Graham Field teaming up with ex-King Crimson and future Greenslade drummer Andy McCulloch to form Fields, who released a self-entitled album in 1971. As for drummer Mark Ashton, well, he knocked around the music business, nothing apparently of interest to prog rock fans. That left the two remaining Rare Bird members, vocalist Steve Gould, and keyboardist David Kaffinetti to resurrect Rare Bird. This time they decided to include guitarists, and even Steve Gould decided to switch from bass to guitar. Andy "Ced" Curtis also helped on guitar as well as Paul Holland, with Fred Kelly on drums and Paul Karas on bass. They switched from Charisma to Polydor, and 1972's Epic Forest was the results.

OK, this out of the way, the music is less progressive than what the original guitarless lineup on Charisma has done, but they still managed to create some excellent music. The band was now going for a more West Coast-influenced rock, with some Crosby, Stills & Nash influences, but with generally more progressive arrangements than CSN. Steve Gould's vocals really seemed to be downplayed here, I suspect the other guys were handling most of the vocals. I really wished there was more of Steve Gould, since he was an excellent vocalist, and I really appreciated his vocal presence on those first two albums. This pretty much sounds like a whole new band who happened to be calling themselves Rare Bird (although as mentioned, Gould and Kaffinetti are the two in common with the original 1969-70 version). "Hey Man" shows that this isn't the old Rare Bird, although it's a catchy song and could have been a potential hit. The title track is the "epic" of the album showing the band can still make great prog rock. It might not be "Flight" (from As Your Mind Flies By) because of the guitars, but they sure put some great jams, before ending more in the soft rock vein. "Turning the Lights Out" is another great high point for me. Much of the music on this album ends up reminding me of their former Charisma labelmates Capability Brown (who happened to cover a couple of Rare Bird songs off their 1972 debut, From Scratch, "Beautiful Scarlet" and "Redman", Rare Bird's version of the latter would not appear until their final album, Born Again in 1974, while the former appeared on their 1969 self-entitled debut, of course). "Her Darkest Hour" is a stunning acoustic ballad, while "Title No. 1 Again (Birdman)" is a rather intense piece showing a bit of that Crosby, Stills & Nash influence.

I figured why Rare Bird went for a totally different approach after two albums was they were certain they could not continue on the same route as their debut and As Your Mind Flies By, and they probably could not top what they done on those albums, so instead they chaged their sound. And admittedly, it did not hurt the band. Don't buy this expecting another As Your Mind Flies By, but it's still a great album.

5 out of 5 stars A bit dated, but still timeless.......2005-12-28

The production values are a bit dated, but the songs hold up so well. CD quality is good--you may wish it was brighter and bigger, but really this is faithful to the vinyl.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic album...sound quality could have been better.......2005-06-11

I just purchased this along with the 2CD set of their other 4 albums....which were remastered...this selection wasn't.

You'll be pleasantly surprised when you hear the 2CD set....the sound quality is rich and full....this selection is clean...it just falls short in output and fullness of sound.

This album was in fact the "epic" of Rare Bird.....their finest moment...incorporating keys and guitars for a very progressive balance of ideas. Whereas the first 2 albums were comprised of vocals, 2 keys, bass and drums....This set takes the band to a higher level.

A remastered version would be a great improvement.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Bird pure class.......2002-08-29

Epic Forest is a fantastic cd from a superb band. This band can rock with the best, but also has a melodic side, and with the fine vocals of Steve Gould and the sublime keyboards of David Kaffinetti the quality of the music is sustained throughout.
This Album was first released in 1973, but such is the quality of the music and the musicians ,it easily stands the test of time. This CD is highly recommended!!

4 out of 5 stars Like a good bottle of wine, Heather improves with time.......2007-05-21

With her unmistakable voice, Heather Nova shares with us another part of her universe filled with different emotions. The song "I miss my sky" is particularly powerful with a chorus that gives you a nice chill through your spine. I've been following Heather Nova since her album Oyster and even though this album doesn't have the raw energy of Oyster or Siren, it still has the Heather Nova trademark stamped on it. She has grown in maturity being now a mother and all this reflects on this album and shows us how a great artist Heather Nova is.

5 out of 5 stars A Return to Excellence.......2007-03-23

I fell in love with the Oyster album of Heather Nova 10 years ago. Then I bought Siren with high expectations and was let down. It was too mellowed down. I still hoped for more from Heather Nova but reviews of her albums implied that those after Siren were even more tame, so I didn't buy them. Finally I gave her most recent album 'Redbird' a chance and I'm so glad I did. I still like Oyster the best due to a few songs I feel to be outright rock masterpieces. However Redbird is solid from start to finish and has 5 or 6 songs that are near the masterpiece level. The energy of the music is back up again and her songwriting is fantastic as ever. That incredibly beautiful voice that is so unique is as great as ever. I'm so happy I have another Heather Nova cd to put in my rotation with Oyster. I enjoy playing this one over and over. Check Heather Nova's music out if you don't know her! P.S. Her cover of Wicked Games is right on, a beautiful, splendid use of her singing talent.

5 out of 5 stars Magic.......2006-06-22

I came across this album on a transatlantic flight where the rest of the audio program didn't seem too great so I thought, give this one a try (I remembered the name Heather Nova from one of my daughter's birthday wish list - which I guess dates me - but had never consciously listened to her). I wound up listening to "Redbird" for five hours, again and again. Back in Europe I bought the CD (too bad it's available in the US as an expensive import only) and have become completely entranced by it. Unlike so many other popular albums that you can listen to a dozen times with pleasure and then get bored by, this one gets better and better. Every time I put it on I discover something new, some nuance or phrase that just grabs me. "I Miss My Sky" and "The Sun Will Always Rise" are my favorite tracks. This is magic, a true work of art. Thanks, Heather. Thanks, Lufthansa. Thanks, daughter.

3 out of 5 stars First, let me start off by saying that I love, love, love.......2006-03-20

Heather Nova. This CD, however, did not reel me in as her previous works, notably Oyster and Siren. Yes, she is a new mother and has gotten older (mellower?), yes people change and try new things, blah, blah, blah. This CD, in my humble opinion, just lacks umph and is quite boring. I hate to say that because some songs are for her child (I think), but that isn't a reason to give a CD more stars than it deserves.

I am and will always be a huge fan of Heather, but this effort just didn't do it for me.

4 out of 5 stars Return to Form .......2006-03-18

After the disappointing 2003 album 'Storm', 'Redbird' is a welcome return to form for Heather. Once again enlisting the production services of Felix Tod, Heather has armed herself with a judicious cover (Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game'), a catchy opening track ('Welcome' co-written with Dido Armstrong). The album also contains some strong originals, some of them tributes to her son, most notably the touching 'Sing you Through'. This album's quality is in the class of 'South' but not quite up to the standard of 'Oyster and 'Glow Stars.' Well worth a listen nonetheless.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Feel the excitement and enjoy the exceptional fidelity of these memorable Red Bird recordings! .......2005-12-06

In April 1964 veteran R&B impresarios George Goldner, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller teamed up with the multi-talented producer/songwriting team of Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich and launched Red Bird Records in New York City. This was a match made in heaven. Over the next several years the Red Bird label would release some of the most exciting pop records ever recorded. And while it wasn't really planned that way nearly 90% of the labels successful releases were by female groups or solo artists. "The Girl Group Sound" features 25 of these single releases from the Red Bird catalog. This is one hot disc!
When I think of 1960's girl groups my thoughts immediately turn to the Shangri-Las. These gals were something special. You could hear the edge and the urgency in their voices. Who will ever forget their #1 hit from 1964 "Leader of the Pack". The fact that this song has been played to death by oldies stations over the years certainly does not diminish the quality of this recording. "The Girl Group Sound" also includes three other hits by the Shangri-Las including "Remember(Walking In The Sand)", "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" and my all time favorite "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" from 1965. Hailing from New Orleans, the Dixie Cups rivaled the Shangri-Las in popularity during the mid 60's. There are a total of 5 Dixie Cups tunes on this disc including "Iko Iko", "People Say" and "Chapel of Love". I am quite confident that you will enjoy each and every one of them. One of the best loved hits from Red Bird was 1965's "The Boy From New York City" by the one-hit wonder group The Ad-Libs. And who can forget the Jelly Beans hit recording of "I Wanna Love Him So Bad". As I mentioned, there are a total of 25 tracks in this collection. Not all of these singles made it to the Billboard Hot 100. But I found a number of gems to recommend. Moody Blues fans will recall that their very first hit record in the U.S. was a tune called "Go Now". You can hear the original version of that song by Bessie Banks on "The Girl Group Sound". And who among you has ever heard of Evie Sands? Give a listen to her versions of "I Can't Let Go" and "Take Me For A Little While" and see if you don't agree that this is one talented young lady. The fact of the matter is that I enjoyed each and every one of the songs in this collection.
"The Girl Group Sound" comes with an interesting 8 page booklet chronicling the history of Red Bird records. And hats off to the folks at Varese Sarabande for a superb remastering job. It is among the best I have heard to date. All in all, this one is a winner in every respect. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Fix the track list!!.......2005-09-24

C'mon Amazon! Only the first four tracks have the artists credited properly. Everything from that point on is FUBAR. How about fixing it?

4 out of 5 stars Excellent comp, but back to mono!.......2002-05-29

Both the well-known and little-heard efforts of the Greenwich-Barry collaborations are here and it's a must-own for 60s girl group collectors. Unlike the other reviewers, I didn't at all care for the stereo mixes; most of these tracks were never meant to be heard in this fashion. The immediacy and impact of the mono mixes is far superior to my ears, so I've docked the review one star for messing with perfection!

5 out of 5 stars Best Red Bird/Blue Cat comp.......2001-11-12

Varese Vintage has put together an outstanding compilation of girl group sounds garnered from the vaults of George Golner's Red Bird/Blue Cat/Daisy/Tiger family of labels. With the songwriting and producing strength of the Brill Building team of Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich behind many of the Red Bird tunes, mid-60s playlists were full of stuff coming out of this indie label. Several of these tracks have become signature songs of the era - read "Chapel Of Love" and "Remember Walking In The Sand" among others. This compilation gathers up many of the biggest hits from Red Bird and throws in several rarities and b-sides to keep the mix interesting. Among these are Roddie Joy's "Come Back Baby" and Bessie Banks' pre-Moody Blues "Go Now". Best of all, many of these tracks appear in true stereo whereas most of them have only been previously available in muffled mono. The sonic improvement is astounding in many cases. Tracks 1,2,4,5,7,11,13,15,17,18,21 and 25 are in stereo with the remainder in mono. An eight-page booklet featuring a backround history of the label with several pics accompanies the disc. While many of the songs on this disc have appeared previously on a multi-disc set from Charly records of the U.K., the sound quality there was marginal. This production gives all new life to many of these songs and is well worth purchasing for the sonic experience alone. Taragon Records also has a disc of Red Bird/Blue Cat recordings and since there is a lot of duplication, that CD is a worthwhile purchase if you are not interested in the lesser hits of Red Bird. The sound quality is likewise, superb and it contains a few non-girl group sides not on the Varese piece. Also, on the Varese disc are two bonus tracks, and if you like these kinds of surprises, read no further. For those who want to know, these tracks are the Jelly Beans' version of "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" and the Raindrops' (Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich) "Another Boy Like Mine".

5 out of 5 stars Essential mid-60s girl-group pop superbly remastered.......2001-07-19

Leiber and Stoller's mid-60s record label (actually labels, including Red Bird, Blue Cat, and others), fueled by the writing, producing and A&R of Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, was one of the most vital sources of original girl-group music. Though it wasn't first (the Chantels and Shirelles had earlier hits), and contemporaries like Phil Spector pushed more boundries, Red Bird's stable did as much as anyone to define the girl-group sound and etch it into history.

Throughout 1964 and 1965, Red Bird hit again and again, almost entirely with their girl-groups. The Dixie Cups and Shangri-Las each topped the charts, as well as scoring top-10s and top-40s, while other Red Bird artists filled the vaults (occasionally making the charts, as well) with tremendously heartfelt and keenly crafted pop. From the New Orleans inflections of "Iko Iko" to the deep soul of Evie Sands' pre-Hollies "I Can't Let Go," to the Shangri-Las street operas, Red Bird produced tracks that, much like Spector's wall-of-sound magnum opuses, served as contemporary teenage confections, and have subsequently revealed deeper artistry as they've aged.

Varese's generous 27-track collection (including two unlisted bonus cuts) features many new true stereo mixes produced directly from the original 4-track masters. The unpeeling of the instruments and vocals into a stereo plane is nothing short of breathtaking - and a bit unnerving. The instrumental and vocal delicacies to be found underneath the stories of torrid motorcycle romances, cool New York style, and the ever-present longing for love are truly astonishing.

At a time when the Beatles were set to obliterate the concept of producers, songwriters and singers collaborating to bring a record to fruition, Red Bird showed just how powerful and fulfilling such an arrangement could be. Varese's spotlight on the label's girl-groups may shortchange the breadth of Red Bird's offerings, but it highlights the label's brilliant, on-going legacy. For the rest of the story, see Charly Records' 4-disc "The Red Bird Story." Just don't expect the consistent level of fidelity heard on this disc!

This album is as good as gold. Of course China is the hit but Good as gold is also a catchy tune. The Red Rockers define a style all there own. This is a must have for any fan of 80's Music.

5 out of 5 stars first major label release to an american clash.......2006-10-10

anyone who has ever heard the first red rockers lp "condition red" would not be lying if they were to tell you that the band put out a solid punk rock album that could only be upstaged by the clashes debut lp out of the u.k..it was full of teen angst and rebelion, songs like guns of revolution ,teenage undergrounnd and the johnny cash classic folsum county blues made this underated groups first lp a classic however it was overlooked by many and became hard to find as a collecter it took me 20+ years to get ahold of it andit was everything i ever thought it would be and more.
good as gold was the bands first major label release.there sound differed from the pure punk sound of condition red but yet still plowed away with ferocity with a western sound that was very refreshing in the very heavy synthetic early 80's.
there is not one track on this lp that is not outstanding in its own right and the band even scored a minor hit due to heavy airplay by the fledgling new music channel mtv,the song was china and whether you liked punk, new wave, rock n roll you could not deny that the band had a well crafted pop song on there hands.unfortunately they were thrown in too the one hit wonders catalog and forgotten.
when U2 broke big in the usa on the unforgettable fire tour the red rockers opened up for U2 on the first or second leg of the tour,im not sure wich but as i watched them intensly two consecutive nites in a row i relized how unappreciated this band was, they played with passion and there leader john griffith came out for a encore, not that the crowd demanded one as the band practically went unoticed as the happening thing was U2 at the moment and he gets on stage alone and does an accoustic version of john lennons "imagine" that broght tears to my eyes.i knew right there this band is special and now over 20+ years later there three lps condition red, good as gold and schitzophenic circus are all in my top ten to twenty lps of all time.i also noted on that night my passion for U2 diminished as they were so special for boy, october and war,on that tour they lost something,at that time U2 was may top band and i traveled to see them over 12 timmes on that tour and the spontanuity was a act, they were never the same to this day.
the red rockers any one of there 3 lps pick any and youll pick a winner.well crafted songs from punk to pop to rock to new wave this band was magic and even though china is a one hit wonder its still wonderfull, pull up the video for it on [...]under keyword red rockers, scroll down and you can see the boys in action back in 83,its a blast, good as gold is as good as gold and you cant miss with the red rockers, solid through and through!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SET!!!!!!.......2005-06-11

I was lucky enough to find a seller who had the 2CD set of this...which contained RARE BIRD 1969...AS YOUR MIND FLIES BY 1970..SOMEBODY'S WATCHING 1973...and BORN AGAIN 1974...all tracks are present and remastered (very consistent sound thoughout) by the Italian company VHRCD...

If you can find this version....GET IT!!! I paid the same price as the 2on1 cd.

I waited a very long time for these to finally be remastered....and was worth the wait

3 out of 5 stars solid debut from largely forgotten progressive rock band.......2005-05-18

i haven't heard the somebody's watching album, and know relatively little music from the latter incarnation of rare bird. rare bird were a talented outfit that emerged at the end of the 1960's. stylistically, they are an early progressive rock band somewhat reminiscent of yes or early genesis, and unlike most bands in that they lacked a guitar player...most fans seem to believe that their greatest moment was their 2nd lp, as your mind flies by. steve gould's vocals can occasionally be heavy handed, but at the same time, he does possess a powerful voice... the outstanding tracks on this good but not outstanding debut are sympathy and beautiful scarlet. sympathy was a minor hit in the u.k., but apparently a big hit in continental europe, and the song did receive some airplay here in the u.s.a., where the rare bird album reached a modestly successful 117 on the billboard charts. sympathy is a rather simple, brief, and haunting ballad that is essentially a plea for peace and compassion with pertinent and relevant lyrics, it is surprising that it wasn't an even bigger hit. beautiful scarlet is a minor masterpiece that belongs in a progressive rock canon of sorts, with nice tempo changes, thrilling (if to some listeners somewhat pompous/ cliched keyboard runs that kind of sounds like the type of music where the silent movie villain is tying the hero's girlfriend to the train tracks!) and fine vocals. god of war is another fine track, and while there are some other decent tunes, there is indeed some filler that precludes this album from being a true classic of the genre. however, the album should appeal to prog fans and enthusiasts of 60's rock, as the two cuts i've mentioned are superb.

5 out of 5 stars Rare white soul from Prog' Dinosaurs..........2004-06-15

It's funny reading the other reviews on this page, as they all seem to concentrate on the first LP in this collection.Personally I think it's dysmal. At a time when rock music was being over taken by self important and serious 'musicians' and wonderful youthful psychedelic punk kids like the Small Faces and Syd Barrett were getting knocked out of the way, this first Rare Bird recording shows why the intellectualisation of pop music had to be erradicated by 1976.
Over blown self indugent boredom......

Now as for 'Somebody's Watching'..that's a whole different kettle of hippies! I LOVE this LP.I've had it on vinyl for about 30 years and was delighted to find it on CD.As previously mentioned, the sound of this is so totally different from the 1st LP, that it's hard to imagine why they kept the same band name! It's akin to Led Zeppelin turning into Bucks Fizz! But there are some truely wonderful songs on this recording, from upbeat pop - Somebody's Watching- to meloncholic sadness of High in the Morming (which sounds like a plea to a drug addicted friend to clean up). There is hard rock/pop in the likes of Third time around and Dollars. But the creme de la creme is without a doubt the genius of 'More and more'.White soul at it's best, harmonies that would have put the O'jays to shame.Right up there with the Average White Band at the time.Magnificent.

The 5 stars in my review are aimed at 'Somebody's watching' as I'd give the first LP a whacking great ZERO. But for the latter recordings, worth the price of purchase alone.Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Bird no frills just great music........2002-12-21

This Rare Bird debut Album is a unique example of keyboard driven rock which was recorded in London in late 1969.The music has a unique sound with the use of keyboards instead of guitars with Graham Field on Hammond Organ and David Kaffinetti on Electric Piano.
The sublime keyboard playing of Kaffinetti and Field comes to the fore on the compositions 'Times' and 'God of War' the latter being a precursor for progressive rock.Steve Goulds vocals are excellent on the powerful track 'Beautiful Scarlet ,Mark Ashton also does a great job on drums and backing vocals .

The lyrics of the track 'Sympathy'seem more relevant today than when they were first written 35 years ago.

Rare Bird were simply the best. Why they never made it big in the UK is a mystery,on this CD you also get the Somebody's Watching album which has a different sound than the original band had, but also has some fine tracks on it.
This Rare Bird CD is full of quality music and is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great debut and a good fourth album.......2002-05-29

Rare Bird started off as one of the earliest rock bands to feature keyboards but no guitar (Lee Michaels took that concept even further by including only organ and drums in his setup). The truly amazing thing about Rare Bird was the band was formed in October 1969, and their debut was released in December 3, 1969, just two months after their formation. It's amazing how they were able to pull that off. After all, it usually takes a band a year or two after formation to get an album out. Their debut was a historic album for it marked the very first album ever released on the Famous Charisma Label (what it was called then), this is the same label that also gave us the likes of Van der Graaf Generator/Peter Hammill, Genesis, Lindisfarne, Monty Python, etc. The album also received a US release on the ABC/Probe label, but it featured a totally different cover. As this album came out not too long after In the Court of the Crimson King and Colosseum's Valentyne Suite, you can tell that, with the longer numbers on this album, that the prog rock scene has finally arrived with full force. Rare Bird's music featured the powerful vocals of Steve Gould, future Spinal Tap guy David Kaffinetti on electric piano, Graham Field on organ, and Mark Ashton on drums. "Sympathy" was the hit on the album (at least a hit on Continental Europe) with lyrics that are perhaps even more relevant now than it was in 1969. There are several great progressive numbers including "Beautiful Scarlet", "Iceberg" and "God of War". "God of War" seems a little untypical for Rare Bird, with a more dark and sinister atmosphere than I'm accustomed to from these guys. I liked the whispered spoken dialog. These progressive songs are nothing short of masterpieces, some of the greatest prog I have ever heard. My complaint with them is they sound too short. Songs like "God of War" could me much longer and still be killer. The album also includes several great, shorter pieces like "Bird on a Wing", "Melanie", "Times", etc. "Times" sounds a little out of place, for the first half of the song, the band was trying to have a more 1950s vibe going on. Then the second half is much more progressive territory with great organ work. I find this album a bit underrated in light of their followup, As Your Mind Flies By, but it's a great album and a great way to start the Charisma label.

As for Somebody's Watching, that one was their fourth album, from 1973, their second for Polydor. Apparently by the time they came to Polydor, they temporarily broke up previously, with Graham Field teaming up with ex-King Crimson and future Greenslade drummer Andy McCulloch to form Fields (who had an album released in 1971 on CBS), and Mark Ashton playing with tons of other artists (that I'm not familiar with). When they came back together, the band now consisted of just Steve Gould and David Kaffinetti, with brand new musicians, this time with guitarists. Their first Polydor album, Epic Forest might as well be another band calling themselves Rare Bird. Steve Gould's vocals seemed to be greatly reduced, and they went for a more mellow, West Coast-influenced sound, influenced by the likes of Crosby, Stills & Nash (even some of the vocals sound like Graham Nash), with a stronger acoustic bent, sound little like the two albums they did for Charisma. Still it's a great album. With Somebody's Watching, they added ex-Van der Graaf Generator bassist Nic Potter, and the band went for a slightly funkier sound, such as the title track and "Third Time Around", with David Kaffinetti including some clavinet on some of the pieces, especially "Turn Your Head". "Who is the Hero" and "High in the Morning" are another one of those examples of this new version of Rare Bird having a more West Coast-influenced sound, while "Turn Your Head" is a nice piece despite much of the song simple repeats "Turn your head around" over and over. Then there's "Dollars", where they do Ennio Morricone's theme to Sergio Leone's well-known Spaghetti Western, For a Few Dollars More (w/Clint Eastwood), and then do an extended and wonderful jam afterwards. While I feel Somebody's Watching is not quite as strong as Epic Forest, it's still quite good. I'd give four stars to Somebody's Watching, but a full five for their debut, and since I can't do four and a half here for the 2 for 1 CD set, I'd have to give it the full five. Regardless, this is a great way to hear the original and second version of Rare Bird.

4 out of 5 stars A Star Shone all too briefly..........2005-10-09

April Lawton, whoever she was, was simply fantastic. I'm not going to sully her reputation by a gratuitous comparison of her with Fanny's June Millington, but I will say that they were easily the equal of any of their male counterparts in the early seventies. And if you can do the almost-impossible and just tune out (giggle) "multi-instrumentalist" Sullivan's "contributions" to "Red Sun" and just fixate on April Lawton here - wow. She was a wonder. And her "Bounty On My Table" is as great a secular song about her faith as was/is David Gate's "Do You Believe He's Coming" (which was released in Gates' first solo album). No, no flashy "wee-wee-diddly-SQUEECH" "lead guitar" histrionics here, just one very talented Woman's musical statement. Like I said, though, to get the full effect of Ms. Lawton's talent, you HAVE to tune out Tommy Sullivan on this thing - honestly, his stuff sounds like a demo tape for Lynyrd Skynyrd or worse...

Green On Red were a new wave rock band from the 1980's led by Dan Stuart & Chris Cacavas. They released numerous albums over the years, but one of them has eluded the CD format. This reissue of Gravity Talks features the track 'Alice' which only appeared on the cassette version of the original release on Slash Records in 1983. Wounded Bird. 2003.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Long awaited CD issue of Paisley Underground landmark.......2003-01-31

Though Green on Red is more often lauded for their later work with Chuck Prophet (e.g., the country-influenced roots-rock "Gas Food Lodging"), this first full-length LP is a true gem of LA's early-80s "paisley underground." The album's slate of twelve originals (plus a bonus original previously available only on the original cassette release) measures up nicely to the scene's other high-water marks, including Rain Parade's "Emergency 3rd Rail Power Trip," Dream Syndicate's "The Days of Wine & Roses," and The Three O'Clock's "Baroque Hoedown."

Though not as edgy as The Dream Syndicate or as punky as The Salvation Army (nor as poppy as their follow-on, The Three O'Clock), Green on Red's "Gravity Talks" integrated many of the same flavors, but resulting in a sound unlike their contemporaries. The mood takes in the bleakness and desperation of Dream Syndicate, the dreamy (or nightmarish) psychedelia of Rain Parade (whose guitarist, Matthew Piucci plays lead on "Snake Beat"), and the darker edges of True West. This is very much a rock record, but with a weariness that belies its youth-oriented genre. Vocalist and lyricist Dan Stuart surveys childhood's end, and finds himself standing at the abyss of adulthood ("Brave Generation"), assaying the failure and resignation that might lay ahead ("Old Chief"), and contemplating final departure ("Blue Parade").

The band smooths down the harder guitar sound that sparked their previous EP, taking a more contemplative approach, with longer instrumental passages dominated by organ lines that bring to mind The Doors. The purposeful nostalgia of the EP gives way to more fully digested influences, with Stuart's vocals straddling the chasm of innocence, despair and abandon that once served Roky Erickson so effectively.

Given the album's superb quality and musical uniqueness, it's surprising that it took 19 years to find CD release (especially considering that the bulk of the band's catalog made it to CD many years ago). Wounded Bird's reissue includes the track "Alice," previously available only on the original release's cassette edition. Though not essential, the track clearly fits musically and thematically with the rest of the album. The audio transfer is excellent, and the cover art, though necessarily reduced in dimension from the original LP, is sharply reproduced. It would have been nice to find some nearly penned liner notes (discussing the band, the album, the scene), but, in the end, the music speaks for itself.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Western Psychedelia.......2003-01-22

This disc never should have taken so long to come out. A true classic of Western Psychedelia with Hammond organ not found on their later music. Old Chief, a song of the downtrodden but still had a friend to lift him up. All songs with a story and good instrumentation to back it up. Gravity talks, Deliverance, Alice, Cheap Wine, all songs I would have been poorer for having missed. Now with the final discs coming out I can RIP. Green On Red, Long Ryders, Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, True West. True Friends, in music. I thank them all.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Finest Recordings of Gibbon's Music.......2006-02-19

The music of Orlando Gibbons represents the English response to radical changes that stemmed largely from Italy in the age of the birth of opera and a move away from the contrapunctal complexities of previous centuries. Whereas the Italian tended to write gradiose and radical works such of those by Monteverdi, the English tended to write music that was stylistically old-fashioned by the standards of the times, unostentatious with its preference for the sounds of the viol consort that helped make it so intimately poetic and evocative. The madrigal The Silver Swan is one of the most famous examples of English music of its time.

We really should rejoice over the fact that Naxos has this superb recording in its catalog. The music making here is first rate in every possible way. Of course Tesser Bonner is a regular with none other than the Tallis Scholars, testifying to the fact that Naxos is above all a quality label. In particular I really do love the way Bonner uses period pronounciation of the texts whereas Emma Kirky sadly modernises the pronounciation in music of this period. Thus the word 'bird' is pronounced more like 'beard'. I feel this helps to evoke the sense of the recreation of a lost world. The instrumental pieces too are unfailingly fine with excellent ensemble work by Red Byrd.

A superb recording recommendable in every possible way.

5 out of 5 stars Behold, thou hast made my day.......2004-01-26

to misquote slightly the first vocal number on this disc. This is a really superlative production in every respect except that the words are not provided for the vocal items (the words of the anonymous The Silver Swan are worth knowing!). Even the liner note, by John Bryan, is excellent, which proves what I had never doubted, namely that the thing can be done on a budget label.

There are nearly 70 minutes of music here, and the plan seems to have been to give as broad a representation as possible of the output of this notable composer. There are 23 items in total, featuring music for accompanied solo voice and 5-part ensemble, keyboard compositions played on three different types of instrument, and items for viol ensembles of 2,3,4,and 6 instruments. Thought and care has obviously gone into the sequencing of the pieces, and the recital ends powerfully with a 5-part anthem `Glorious and Powerful God' led off by a gent with a truly terrific bass voice. One notable inclusion is an In Nomine for 4 viols. An In Nomine is actually a musical form, and a specifically English one, consisting of a free fantasia on a canto fermo deriving originally from plainsong via a mass by John Taverner. Solo status is accorded to Timothy Roberts who performs the three keyboard numbers, and to Tessa Bonner the soprano soloist in the seven pieces of that nature. I had the opportunity to compare her in The Silver Swan with Rachel Elliott on another outstanding Gibbons disc, by a group calling themselves Concordia (director Mark Levy), and you may actually prefer, as I do, the way Concordia do it. The piece benefits from Concordia's slower tempo, and my personal preference is for Elliott's voice, although she does use a modicum of vibrato, so this preference will not be shared by everyone. Their disc goes under the title Go From My Window, which is not a song but a set of 10 variations on a `ditty' by that title. In this piece I have to give my vote to Concordia again, as they give it with colossal panache and virtuosity - I'm not surprised they elected to call the disc after it. In fact the two recitals have another 4 pieces in common, and in these I can find nothing to choose between the two groups, so fine do both seem to me.

Enthusiasts for music of this period, and anyone even curious about it, are also recommended a keyboard recital , by John Kitchen, of works by the Scottish composer Kinloch, music that surprised even me (Scottish myself) by its outstanding quality. Long may enterprises like these continue.

5 out of 5 stars More than a bargain.......2002-12-18

This is a handsomely played and beautifully recorded disc. The Rose Consort of Viols aptly catches the inherent melancholy of Gibbons style while Tessa Bonner sings ethereally as usual. With singing of Bonner's purity, as in "Silver Swanne", who needs texts? This is more than a bargain; it is a wonderful introduction to the deeply touching music of Orlando Gibbons.

3 out of 5 stars Okay but no texts.......1999-01-24

As the title says mainly viol consort and keyboard music, but the highlights are the two english anthems for 5 voices, and three solo pieces with Tessa Bonner - including the famous "The Silver Swan". So why no texts? Playing time 68'24".
