4 out of 5 stars Like It, Don't Love It.......2006-07-26

There have been many really bad tributes to Depeche Mode and this is not one of them. This is different since it is with a string quartet. The result is astounding, if you like string quartets that sound like Depeche Mode. The song selection was done rather well. Although, it seems to sound nothing like the orginal tracks. Despite that, it confirms what is often believed that Depeche Mode are much better muisicians then what they have been given credit as being.

I wonder though, do they (the string artists here) even like or listen to Depeche Mode or similar artists like New Order or even Duran Duran. This may have been mostly a marketing ploy. Either way, this falls a little flat. There are moments of altered-brilliance, but it mostly seems to inacuratly display the subtleties and true emotion of Depeche Mode.

Mostly though, this is just an album, not a Depeche Mode album, because it's not them, so don't think of it that way.

5 out of 5 stars The String Quartet Tribute to Depeche Mode ~ Buzzy LeBeau.......2005-04-17

There have been many really bad tributes to Depeche Mode and many that sound like they have been made in a basement with cheap toy keyboards and even worst vocals. Like the worst karaoke versions possible. This is a very good and different tribute album which is a string quartet that has taken Depeche Modes tracks and remade them to fit a string quartet and the result is astounding. They have picked som excellent songs to work with, i.e., In your room, people are people and many others. Yes it sounds nothing like the orginal tracks however it confirms what I have always believed that Depeche Mode are much better muisicians then what they have been given credit as being. Their songs are not simply keyboard jingles but just as complex as bands such as U2 and many other rock acts. The cover is obvious tribute to the 1990 release violator and the book-let is sparse but effective.

3 out of 5 stars Sounded rushed.......2004-07-06

Of course, it cannot be expected that String Quartet organizers actually appreciate the various artists they make "tributes" to. Its more a marketing effort or a novel approach. In any event, the DM tribute falls a little flat. There are moments of achievement, but generally the artists seem to miss the emotions and subtleties of DM.

I bought it and spun it a few times. You may want to pass.

5 out of 5 stars purely enjoyable!.......2002-03-25

the Master and Servant Maxi Single is great, (Set Me Free) Remotivate Me is an incredible B-side, and the other two remixes of Master and Servant are awesome, they are really incredible remixes and make this single extremely worthwhile, Pump your volume up and put on Master and Servant - Slavery Whip Mix, and you'll find yourself tapping, clapping and singing along.

4 out of 5 stars A decent CD single.......2001-07-17

You've probably already heard "Master and Servant" if you're thinking about picking up this single, so I won't really go into that. What you've got here are that track with 2 remixes: one fairly standard early 80s Depeche Mode remix and an instrumental mix (for you karaoke lovers out there :^)

The b-side, "set me free (remotivate me)", is a pretty cool upbeat track that is fairly consistent with Depeche Mode's early pop material. Checking out the audio samples will give you a pretty good indication of whether or not you like the track.

Overall, there's not a whole lot of material here that would be overly appealing to someone who doesn't already own all of the full-length albums. It's basically a standard Depeche Mode single. Fans, however, will probably want to pick it up for the decent b-side and somewhat less notable remixes.

    5 out of 5 stars Opinions.......2005-04-15

are like ......... everybody has one. This one is a rider for sure. Made me wanna take a drive somewhere. This along with Julie Dexter's Conscious are two def must haves. If you love this sound, then you must have Eric Roberson's The Vault 1.5 and Esoteric bka The Esoteric Movement. There are still some great artists out there, you just probably won't find them on the radio mainstream or video mainstream..This is a must for music fans...I dig it..Peace

2 out of 5 stars Bland electric musings.........2005-03-22

I really wanted to like this album. I guess I want to like all albums I buy, considering that I've spent my money on them, but I just could not feel this album. I think what it is mainly is that all the tracks sound the same. When will artists come to understand that you cannot do a whole album based off of drum machine syth beats and expect it to fly? It is especially clear on this album where after the 3rd or 4th track, you begin to see a definite pattern forming. Also, his voice sounds reserved, like he's not letting go, being too wispy with it. Because of that, his sound doesn't come through clear, and it affects the delivery of his lyrics, which by the way are not that bad. The lyrics are probably the only redeeming quality of this album. He talks a lot about love and life, sharing the insights of a grown man, a man who has loved and learned along the way. I just wish he would have learned to love the simple quality that adding a true drum snare or piano riff can add to your track. And its not that I really dislike electronic music, I love House, I can get with Jungle, and D&B, but those are supposed to sound electronic. The R&B, soul croonings of Mr. Michael Johnson are not.

5 out of 5 stars XXXual vibrations !!!.......2005-03-08

A mixture of past and present experiences. Dissected, amalgamated and fused together to form a decadent ambience, that is almost seamless and thought invoking.
Anyone who knows real music will know that you do not require real instruments to make exemplary music. There are a number of conscientious musicians today who use this technology, (computers and drum machines) to enhance and compliment their sound. It is most evident in House and Electro Jazz to create the desired effect, as an artist would say.
I sense a true romantic here in the making, capable of manipulating this technology to create something that is quite stimulating.

If you are a true Sade lover, have bought Julie Dexter' new album "Conscious" and own a copy of Santessa "Delirium", then you will definitely appreciate this album.
It would be interesting to hear some "Osunlade" remixes of some tracks.

3 stars ??? I give it the full five marks for being abstract and consistent. Definitely one of the "The bedroom Beats" as its the perfect backdrop for a passionate encounter.

    Compliments to the Chef!

3 out of 5 stars Something Fresh and New.......2005-03-03

I first heard of Michael Johnson on the jazz station WCLK in Atlanta. This station is different from the norm and will play artist that are not the norm. His music has a "drum machine" sound to it. No real instruments but, nothing over techical. His voice and music together kind of reminds me of Maxwell's last attempt with Embrya. Each track is long enough for you to get a good feel for his production talents although by using computers and drum machines to make his music, it starts to sound the same after the 6th track. This is one of those albums that you may or may not like at first. It took me a few spins in the CD deck to start to feel it. But if you want to hear something other than the junk being passed off as music then check this out. If you like this you also may like Remy Shand.
