4 out of 5 stars More Hits Than You Might Remember.......2007-06-05

My wife got this for me because when he'd come on the radio I would say "Do you remember this one?". Anyway, I was surprised how many songs on there I knew once I listened to it.

5 out of 5 stars CHRIS CROSS GREATNESS .......2007-05-14

What an awesome CD. The vintage songs that made him a hit so long ago, and a few new ones thrown in make an excellent ballance. if you're into great lyrics, and the supreem vocals of Christopher Cross, this provides it all.

5 out of 5 stars Good collection.......2007-03-11

This is a good collection of hits. They are in a nice order to listen to. Really glad I ordered it.

5 out of 5 stars "Sailing"-Nostalgia at it's Best!!!!.......2007-03-09

It was 1979, I was up at a cottage on the lake north of Toronto and it was sunset when I first heard "Sailing". Now everytime I hear that song I'm taken back to golden sunsets on the lake and this beautiful song playing.

Other great songs are "Arthur's Theme", "I Take You Forever", a great duet that came out in 1988 and I have fond memories of, "Think of Laura", a melancoly tune but a song that just take you back to the early 80's like "Arthur's Theme" and a modest hit from 1987 called "Swept Away", great song. I also first heard this song on a "Growing Pains" episode and loved it.

I'm all about the ballads on this CD. To me Christopher Cross' music takes me back to a wonderful nostalgic time in my life, as I'm sure so many of us can relate. His music puts a smile on your face. I agree with another reviewers comments about his looks-okay so he doesn't look like Brad Pitt-So What! He seems like a down to earth guy just singing from his heart and I think his fans wouldn't have it any other way.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Compilation of Christopher Cross!.......2007-02-12

I don't know why Christopher Cross' career took a nosedive because he's still one of the greats of easy listening even now. I love the song, Swept Away, which has always been my favorite. Maybe it's because it was used in the Growing Pains Hawaiian episodes. I love Sailing, Come to My Window, and of course, Arthur's theme. People will realize that Christopher Cross' music is still relevant, soothing, deeply relaxing, and classic because it holds up even in today's standards. Yes, I know it's not the 1980s anymore but when you hear Chris' singing, you can still remember it. At least with today, the internet and the computer age has allowed us to gain easier access to it. I remember searching every music store for this song. I'm not one of those people who burn their music off the internet. I'm old fashioned. I would rather buy it and listen to it on cds in my car or at the gym. When I hear him, I feel a little relaxed about life in general.

Hailed upon its arrival as a significant comeback for the Band, this 1975 collection hasn't aged as well as the likes of Stage Fright, Moondog Matinee, or even the outfit's post-Robbie Robertson output. The eight-song collection (augmented on the 2001 reissue with two agreeable extras--alternate versions of "Twilight" and "Christmas Must Be Tonight") isn't without its delights, foremost being Rick Danko's heavy-hearted reading of the devastating "It Makes No Difference." But for every "Forbidden Fruit" and "Ophelia"--worthy additions to Robertson's credits--there are the somewhat forced likes of "Jupiter Hollow" and "Rags and Bones." Also, Garth Hudson stocked up on the latest technology before heading into the studio, but the layers ARPs and mini-Moogs here contribute to a feeling of busyness. Northern Lights--Southern Cross is very much a '70s album--not a good thing from a quintet whose best music was tough to peg to any era. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars The final classic.......2007-01-10

The Band's sixth and final proper studio album (I don't really count Islands, the collection of half-hearted studio outtakes, as a real album), Northern Lights - Southern Cross is a surprisingly strong comeback in both writing and performance. The Band hadn't released an album of new material since the disappointing Cahoots, and the extracurricular substance-related activities of Richard Manuel and Rick Danko lessened their songwriting output considerably (completely in Manuel's case). However, despite their stumbles and a growing divergence of some members (guitarist/songwriter Robbie Robertson would be ready to leave the group not long after the album was released), the quintet pull off amazing comeback album, filled with what originally made The Band so classic--great writing, strong playing from Manuel, Danko and Levon Helm, and expert playing, especially from organist/multi-instrumentalist Garth Hudson.

The album kicks off with the rocking "Forbidden Fruit," a cautionary tale sung by Helm. One thing I actually like about Robertson's somewhat egotistical prominence in the later Band material is his up-front, gnarly guitar--he starts using the whammy bar on this album, and the results are wicked to say the least. He takes a few blistering solos in "Forbidden Fruit" that make you wonder if he sold his soul for his guitar skills. This song also marks Garth Hudson's introduction of (then) new synthesizers into his arsenal of keyboards. It might off-put you if you're a classic Americana Band fan, but give it a chance--it really grew on me. Regardless of the instrument, it's still being played by the bearded master, Garth Hudson. The second track is a "Hobo Jungle," a mid-tempo narrative that features some excellent acoustic guitar from Robbie and one of the finest vocal melodies on Band record, sung by Richard Manuel. Despite his heavy drinking, his voice still sounds great, though it's become quite weathered. "Ophelia" is one of the more well-known tracks on the album. The Band uses an almost Dixieland horn arrangement and Levon Helm, in addition to singing, pounds the skins with reckless abandon.

The other well-known track is "Acadian Driftwood," a song Robbie wrote about the Acadian Indians who were forced to move from Canada to Louisiana. It's a heartfelt tribute, sung by all three vocalists and featuring a piccolo part by Garth Hudson. "Ring Your Bell" is one of the group's funkiest songs, a pretty humorous outlaw tune and a all-out belter from Danko, who also sings "It Makes No Difference." One of Robbie Robertson's best love ballads, this track became a sort of signature torch tune for Rick, and it's buoyed by some of Robbie's revelatory guitar and Garth on saxophone. "Jupiter Hollow" is a long (for The Band) and experimental song--a great detour, with a lot of mythological and mystical imagery, and a whole lot of synth overdubs from Garth Hudson. It makes for a really cool listen and has a groovy vibe and some creative drumming from Levon. The album closes on a truly classic note with "Rags and Bones," another darkly funky romp through a night-time city with some of Robbie's most lively and creative guitar (check out that left channel--wow!).

Northern Lights - Southern Cross is The Band's shortest album, and it's always over too soon. The bonus tracks are OK, but as usual don't add anything (careful they don't spoil the vibe of the original album). This one definitely ranks pretty high up there for me as one of their top albums--worlds better than Cahoots and with moments that transcend a lot of their other material. It's such a pity they had to quit making music when their last album was this great. A lot of people will tell you they didn't make any good music after Stage Fright, but give Northern Lights - Southern Cross a try and I think you might agree with me that that's simply not true. I hope you enjoy The Band's final classic!

4 out of 5 stars One of the Band's Best -- An Elegant Swan Song.......2006-02-14

I disagree with the reviewers who find this album too "70s" -- yes, the production and Garth's use of the Moog and other synths peg the recording date of the record -- but why is that presumed to be a bad thing?

I love the way these songs flow seamlessly from one to another -- the songs all deal with loss, upheaval, movement, endurance, cycles of joy and sadness, all beautifully pieced together. The liner notes on the reissue really add to the significance and enjoyment of these songs; I love the way Robbie wrote "Ophelia" and "Forbidden Fruit" using older, discarded chord progressions. Danko knocks one of the park with his tortured, sensitive reading of "It Makes No Difference," and personally I enjoy Garth's enveloping and intricate synth work on "Jupiter Hollow." Of course Acadian Driftwood is a classic story of uprooting, perseverance, and survival, and even the unadorned and simple Christmas song tacked on to the end works for me.

One of the Band's best and a great way to go out (I prefer to ignore Islands....).

5 out of 5 stars I like the words; the singing is great, some songs outstanding.......2006-01-16

On Junior Day, 2006, I would like to seek lessons from the twentieth century that apply to the situation in the world. Things change, but our grasp of sentimentality can ebb or flow either way, particularly if it is informed by listening to The Band album from 1975, `Northern Lights, Southern Cross.' Someone in The Band might be from Canada, and the song `Acadian Driftwood' pictures a family with a broken-down car trying to get someplace where life was better, as some French Canadians made it all the way to New Orleans after France lost its hold on Quebec. Somehow the music seems a bit more cheerful for the song `Ophelia,' when The Band is singing:

Ashes of laughter, the ghost is clear,
Why do the best things always disappear,
like Ophelia? Please darken my door.

There are a number of songs about drifters. `Hobo Jungle,' `Jupiter Hollow,' and maybe `Rags And Bones.' In the first song, `Forbidden Fruit,' there is an admonition:

You got one life that you better not waste.

The Band had been playing together for years when `Northern Lights, Southern Cross' was recorded. Among the tales of woe that allowed music to explore the depths of the human situation, `It Makes No Difference' by J. R. Robertson took four or five chords to get through the first two lines, added a few more chords for the chorus, then managed to fit in a few more for the part in the middle that declares:

Now there's no love
As true as the love
That dies untold
But the clouds never hung so low before.

Civilization requires certain limits to love, which threatens to uproot the basic standards of stability, but music keeps morphing, as The Band throws in a few more chords near the end with the words:

Without your love I'm nothing at all
Like an empty hall it's a lonely fall
Since you've gone it's a losing battle
Stampeding cattle, they rattle the walls.

Well, I love you so much
It's all I can do
Just to keep myself from telling you
That I never felt so alone before.

The last four lines probably use the same chords as the lines ending with "But the clouds never hung so low before." The hurt of lost love seems to apply to love that never even happened yet, rain or shine, because "The shadow never seems to fade away." And as for songs:

These old love letters
Well, I just can't keep
'Cause like the gambler says
Read 'em and weep
And the dawn don't rescue me no more.

5 out of 5 stars 3rd Best Band Album, Still one of the Top 100 ever.......2005-06-19

It is well known that by 1975 when this album was recorded, The Band was much less a band than they used to be, not due to loss of talent, but loss of the easygoing friendships that had fueled the first two albums. What a showing they still make.

To me Richard Manuel sang some of the greatest performances of his life on this album, for instance check out: Hobo Jungle, Rags & Bones, Acadian Driftwood. Levon and Rick also hand in some fine performances, Levon particularly on Forbidden Fruit, Rick's Swan Song is most definately It Makes No Difference. Robbie provides some very good lyrics for the whole album. Garth is brilliant of course, "ain't it easy when you know how" .

My only complaint is it is just not long enough, 8 songs on the original, 10 on the remastered edition. I grew up in a house full of Classic Rock "N Roll. When I heard The Band, I was mesmerized by how each song can sound so different from each other but they never lose that tight ensemble sound. To me Richard Manuel is the greatest singer in the History of Popular Music.

A must purchase for any fan of The Band, or any fan of Truly Soulful, meaningful Roots Music.

4 out of 5 stars ****1/4. The Band's last great record.......2004-08-03

The strongest Band album since "Stage Fright", "Northern Lights, Southern Cross" was The Band's first studio album in four years. Better than "Cahoots" and "Moondog Matinee", it is really The Band's last hurrah, although the mediocre "Islands" did come out in 1977, after the Canadian-American outfit had stopped touring for good. (Robbie Robertson says about "Islands": "It wasn't even an album, we were just trying to get out of a contract!")

"Northern Lights, Southern Cross" features the same dense, muscular arrangements as previous albums, anchored by Levon Helm's supple, versatile drumming, and the role of lead vocalist is still passed around between Helm, Danko, and Manuel. The only notable difference is that Garth Hudson had partially abandoned his Lowrey organ in favour of synthesizers (that may sound ominous, but it really isn't).

Robbie Robertson is credited as the sole composer on all eight tracks on the original LP, as well as the newly added bonus cuts, and the many highlights include the rollicking "Ophelia", Rick Danko's excellent performance of the mournful ballad "It Makes No Difference", and the lyrical, acoustic folk-rock of "Hobo Jungle".
But the album's centrepiece has to be the epic "Acadian Driftwood", a nearly seven minute folkish narrative which chronicles the story of the Acadians, a people exiled from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in the 1750s. It is a superbly evocative masterpiece, one of Robbie Robertson's very best songs.

Not as highly touted as "Music From Big Pink" or "The Band", "Northern Lights, Southern Cross" is nevertheless one of The Band's classic albums. Being the Band's fourth best record really isn't half bad, you know.

CCR does it again. Soul Gravy is like Donnie and Marie - Its a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll, and everything in between. But Unlike Donnie and Marie, this album doesn't suck. Fans of the band or lovers of outlaw country will especially like this masterful CD.

5 out of 5 stars Next Generation Southern Rock.......2005-09-01

Cross Canadian Ragweed confirms the belief that the heart of Southern Rock is still beating. I wish mainstream country radio played this stuff more often. These guys ROCK!!

4 out of 5 stars Goofball name, terrific band.......2005-06-18

We picked up some CCR albums last year when they were listed as the warmup act for a ZZ Top concert we were going to. We liked the recordings and we loved their live show. CCR suffers from an identity problem, they think they're a rock band with a strong country influence but the music industry thinks they're alt.country. And let's face it, the name of the band doesn't help. Fortunately the music speaks for itself, this band has solid song-writing and they deliver a smoking live show, the ZZ Top audience had never heard of them but still gave them a standing ovation at the end of their set. This is a good album and there are several songs here that could be hits if radio stations would play them, but whether they make it big or remain a cult band, CCR is good stuff.

What can you say about CCR. Absolutly amazing. I own over 40,000 songs and this is one of my top 5 bands being that they are so original and you can tell they love their music. I love punk rock, grunge, and classic rock and these guys really are in their own genre. I love their remake of "Wanna rock'n'roll" This is really the CD you need to check out if you haven't heard these guys before... Its just to bad there is no "Boys from Oklahoma" ...

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection of My Favorites.......2007-02-15

This double disc live CD includes all my favorite CCR songs, and also pulls up some of their friends to sing with them. Unlike most live CD's there is not a lot of talking, just a lot of great music. This live compilation is a vital for all CCR fans.

4 out of 5 stars Cross Canadian Ragweed.......2007-01-10

If you like Cross Canadian Ragweed, buy this cd. It is a two disc set, with mostly previously recorded tracks, but also some new ones. We are really enjoying it!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2006-12-10

Finding out where some of the songs came from (inspiration) was great! I hope everyone read the thank yous...that was just as great as the cd itself. These guys and their families are some of the best people.

4 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll is alive and well.......2006-12-06

If you think the days of true rock and roll are dead and gone, check out this CD. As someone who can barely stand to listen to rock radio anymore, Ragweed is a welcome sign that good music is still being made, whether the mainstream wants us to hear it or not. Cody Canada has really turned into a shredder on the electric guitar, and this CD is worth buying just for the sake of listening to his solos. Canada's playing makes Robert Earl Keen's "Lonely Feeling" into one of the most powerful rock ballads I've heard. All of the tracks show off the skills of this band, and it's amazing how far they have come since "Live at the Wormy Dog" (which is another great CD if you want to hear the early days). The last few songs on the first CD are acoustic, which gives you a chance to hear a side of Ragweed that you maybe haven't heard before. Canada's cover of Neil Young's "Needle and the Damage Done" really shows off his voice and acoustic guitar skills.

If I have one complaint about this CD, it might be that the CD is a true live CD (no remixing), and sometimes it's hard to hear the awesome musicianship or Canada's vocals over the noise of the crowd. A lot of people will probably love it for the same reason though. All in all, anyone who loves good old fashioned rock and roll will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing peace to all that find them.......2007-06-24

I recently went to a mewithoutyou show in Detroit, not really knowing what to expect. There were three other opening bands, which I had never heard of before. The snake, the cross, the crown opened first with the beautiful "Cakewalk", and I was blown away. It's been a long time since I've gotten goosebumps from listening to a band play. I've never felt more at peace. The entire show that night was an incredible experience that I'll never forget. If you get the chance to see them in concert, I strongly suggest you do so. The album is amazing as well, full of upbeat tunes as well as beautiful melodies. Take a listen and I'm sure you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars I wanna live on the stage..........2007-05-25

I would argue with those who say this album is a maturation from the previous albums, or being more cohesive. I look at their 3 albums (Including the 'Like a Moth before a Flame'ep) as seperate and equally successful attempts in different sub-genres of rock. Their previous two albums hold their own in terms of musical composition, lyrics and overall congruity.

5 out of 5 stars new spin on folk rock.......2007-05-14

beautiful melodies..good followup to mander salis with a more cohesive sound..it is now clear what direct scs is going with their music..excited to see what they will come out with next..if you don't like this album, may your ears incessently bleed

4 out of 5 stars solid thrid album.......2007-04-06

this is a good album, with definite growth and maturity evident in the band. but this growth has been more towards a Folk influence, which although i like and am growing into, definitely dont enjoy as much as their prior stellar rock angle. preview the tracks and if it's your style, this is an amazing album. otherwise, if you havent already, pickup TSTCTC's second album: Mander Salis. it's amazing

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful indie rock to warm your little soul.......2007-03-20

This album has all of the trappings of The Snake The Cross The Crown's last album but it has fine tuned them and made them better. Everything they had in 'Mander Salis is in this fun, intense and masterfully produced album. A wonderful choice for anyone looking for simple, good, and as the band puts it "unassuming folk inspired rock."

2 out of 5 stars One Trick Pony.......2007-03-09

These guys could REALLY use a good , strong producer. They are basically running with just one thing, which is best represented by the song "Fighting For", a sort of 80's rock pop with attitude song that's really just "OK", not great.

You'll find listening to the other songs that they pretty much go right down that road, but that they lack even the mid level quality of songwriting that "Fighting For" has, leaving you feeling like you've been listening to a high school group, especially in the lyrics. Many of the songs are even in the same keys, making the CD kinda drone along without any dynamics from song to song.....

I was pretty disappointed, but from what I hear these guys are really a LIVE band more than anything, so seeing them live might be a lot more fun than wading through this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-11-05

This band is awesome. If you like classic rock give this a try.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CD's.......2006-10-23

This CD gets better everytime I listen to it. Just when I think I should be getting sick of it it pulls me back in. I have been looking to find some similar artists and am wondering if anyone has had any luck finding any that are nearly as good as Ragweed. Either way, buy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome live too .......2006-07-23

Hey i'm in Chicago; i just caught up with them at Joes on Weed ! To bad most people will never hear or see them because of corp crap ; but this CD (Garage) rocks ..... i'm not a fan of country music but if its only smells like Country but tastes like Rock i'm into it ...... Check out the samples and your be hooked !!! God bless the boys !!

4 out of 5 stars It gets better each time I listen..........2006-05-16

This is my third CCR album/CD. Started with "Live at Billy Bobs" (or whatever) and I was hooked. "Soul Gravy" had its moments (cuts) but this "Garage" CD is more consistent in its output for my tastes.

However, it took a few listening sessions to totally get the feel for it and into my head. It seems to get better each time I listen to it.

CCR is definitely a hard band to tag. There's rock, there's country, then add some blues and a throw back or two to bands I used to listen to "way back when".

Cody's lead guitar work is always a pleasure to listen to. Today's music, period, just doesn't match up to his crisp, edgey guitar playing. His guitar "hooks" are many and stay with you well past after turning the CD player off such as with Track #2. In addition, check out his guitar work on the closing moments of Track #11 on "Garage". His jammimg lasts darn near two minutes as the song winds down. Seems like every studio album contains a long jam someplace on the album in either a bridge between lyrics or at the end of the song.

If you are a guitar fan and grew up on rock music (whether it was Skynard's 3 guitars, Allman Bros. Eagles or whatever), I say take time to check this CD out.

I just wish more of today's rock or country sounded like this! I just don't like much of what is being marketed nowadays...

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2006-11-07

Recommend owning all these guys CD's -- even the live stuff is good!

3 out of 5 stars Its Okay.......2006-03-05

I just started listening to Cross after years of listening to Jack Ingram, Pat Green, REK, etc. I really like a lot of their stuff, but this album just didn't really do it for me. Don't get me wrong, there are some really good songs on here (17 being the best), but some of the songs just miss and as a result the album is not as strong as it should be. I would recommend you get another Cross album before getting this one - but if you are a fan then it is a must own.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-02-16

Another fantastic album from good ol' CCR. I got hooked on them at a show in Seattle, where this kind of music really should belong, but the Country label so often associated with Texas bands probably scares some. I managed to see them from 6 feet away, separated by only a 3 foot elevated stage and a microphone. Great in concert, even better on this CD. If you are considering getting into this band, this and all other CDs are worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars ALT-COUNTRY/ROCK + ROLL/POWERPOP, TEXAS STYLE!!.......2004-09-02

I'll tell ya, I LOVE this band!! PERIOD!! Only problem is, not easy finding their stuff in New York, let alone catching one of their supposedly AMAZING gigs!! I think Cody and the boys have MAYBE played NYC once, and I unfortunately missed em...sniff...thinking they'd be back soon enough...nope...

As everyone else had said, CCR are the real deal, I wholeheartedly agree!! Country?? No way in HELL, at least by Nashville-country standards!! That's a BIG part of their appeal for me...this band is NOT SLICK, all raw, punky, ELECTRIC guitars, killer songwriting, and true-to-life lyrics/stories, equally influenced by classic country, southern rock (as much Georgia Satellites as Skynyrd), LOUD rock + roll a la AC/DC, powerpop a la Cheap Trick, punk rock/grunge a la Nirvana...add their in-the-blood southern/Texas/Okie sensibilities, put it all in a blender and you have CCR...

AMAZING band, period!!

All the tunes on this "Purple" album are kickass, from the killer opener "Anywhere But Here" (pure Georgia Satellites, and Cody sounds like Dan Baird!!), to the moving, true-to-life "17", the Nirvana-ish "Don't Need You", the melodic, pure "Constantly", and a somewhat overlooked fave "Other Side". I really enjoy the two epic closers "Carry You Home" (not religious/gospel, but spiritual and honest in his somewhat conflicting/contradicting feelings and beliefs...not easy to put across, espesh in song), and "Freedom" (love the feedback-ridden opening bit, pure punk rock/grunge...)

If you LOVE CCR, like I do, do yourself a favour and check out AZ legends Roger Clyne + The Peacemakers (www.rogerclyne.net), NJ legend John Eddie, and sisters Alison Moorer + Shelby Lynne...I REALLY think CCR should tour with RCPM, John, and Alison + Shelby...it will expand their audience among likeminded fans and bands/artists...they would go over well...

I just have no one else to turn em on to here, except alt-country fans, and those few friends are already fans...I would attend every CCR gig I could, but there are none...

I love "Soul Gravy" too, and the live DVD rocks, makes me itch for the CCR live experience in the flesh all the more...they seem like fun and come across as genuine, good guys, and actual Democrats, not bogus Republicans that Nashville crappers seem to all be, and I don't relate...all the good alt-country artists like Steve Earle, they're all liberal Democrats...I can't imagine CCR not being that as well...

Now, I will struggle and find their 4 independent releases too, as those songs from them on the DVD kick ass!!

3 out of 5 stars A Couple of Winners on this CD -- But Painfully Lacking too.......2004-08-21

There are a couple of good songs on this CD. The group does in fact meld rock with country to some degree, but the problem is that the musicians lack the talent of other groups that have successfully done it in the past, such as the Eagles, and more recently the sound of Son Volt. A couple of the songs are catchy, but the lyrics are absolutely anemic.

If you want a good country/folk/rock blend of music, check out Son Volt. They put it together with lyrics and much more musical talent. Just my opinion.

Back in 1991, when the Cordes brothers released their beautiful debut, the notoriously prickly hip-hop community had a collective fit. How dare that fat kid, who spoke in parables, call himself a rapper? Sampling Spandau Ballet? Talking all that hippie crap? The hardcore fans filed PM Dawn in the alternative section, but the open-minded embraced the dreamy soundscape without questioning its origins. If De La Soul worked with Brain Wilson, you'd be halfway to figuring out the flowing melodies and stream-of-consciousness raps (OK, Prince Be never was much of a microphone fiend) that PM Dawn unleashed. Years later this CD stands up, if only because the rest of the world has caught up to the confusion that Be felt in his troubled soul and translated into music so well. Simply lovely stuff. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful!!!.......2006-07-31

I had been looking for this album for ages! It is the best for excercise, or just laying and chilling out. I highly recommend this album to everyone!!!!

5 out of 5 stars That's the way it goes...I guess........2005-08-20

I originally bought this album only hearing "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss". I also wanted to get the song which sampled Kraftwerk "If I Wuz U", being that I collect songs that sample Kraftwerk, so I went to Amazon.com and listened to the 30 second samples they had. I liked what I heard. So, I wait for the mail to arrive....

I got the album and it started off with "Reality Used to Be a Friend of Mine" and I was floored. This was REAL HIP HOP, it reminded me of De La Soul, except more poetic. "Amazing" is the only word to describe it.

Following was "Paper Doll", such a beautiful song. Just the way everything comes together is perfect. I actually had no clue until I bought this album that Be did all the vocals singing/rapping. What a versitile man.

Basically, every track following this IS perfect. Except "Shake"...I don't know about that one, but other than that I couldn't ask for anything more in an album. I want to say ONCE AGAIN, THIS ALBUM IS DAMN AMAZING!

I really needed something as beautiful as this album in my world at this time of my, and I thank P.M. Dawn for it.

5 out of 5 stars artistic masterpiece.......2005-05-17

lets say you take dream pop,and put spoken word type hip-hop vocals over the lush musical landscape and you get this masterpiece of an album.i was roughly 13 years old when i heard this album in 1991,and thought it was beautiful.it was a weird contrast to my N.W.A,GnR(guns-n-roses),public enemy, living color,ice-t,and geto boys album collection. eitherway its a great cd to have in my collection.

this album is just so smooth my fav tracks are paper doll, set a drift, and even after i die, this album is verry eclectic moody.when i was younger the album would just take me away.

the album isn't reallly ground breaking but it is verry well done enough to be considered a classic.i'm glad hip-hop didn't go in the direction of PM Dawn.because honestly that would make them obsolete in a world of simuler clones.besides theres enough room for all types of rap music.theres no neeed to follow one formula

5 out of 5 stars A masterpriece!.......2003-04-04

I purchased this CD years ago and still the vibe that the music conjures blows me away. The songs are sharp, poetic, and hungry for your attention. The real gem on the album is a great track called "Even After I die." Give this album a chance and you won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars The Debut Best.......2002-11-07

5 out of 5 stars SIN OZZY, SIN DIO Y SIN BUTLER, PERO UNO DE LOS MEJORES.......2007-04-22

5 out of 5 stars More Great Material From The Post-Ozzy Era.......2007-01-25

Before I review this album, there are two things I need to get off my chest: first, this is not a "Satanic" album by any stretch of the imagination. Just because the words "Satan," "Devil" and "Hell" are present in the lyrics does not make a song "Satanic" anymore than the words "God," "Jesus" or "Lord" makes a song "Christian." These songs are simply about classic good vs evil, from the perspective of "good." Second, stop saying this is not really Black Sabbath since Tony Iommi is the only original member present; look folks, that fact is Iommi has owned this band from day one. In addition, there are plenty of examples of high-profile bands that currently exist with only one original member (Megadeth, anyone?).

Now, with that said, this is probably my favorite album of the "Martin period." Musically, Headless Cross is a very unusual yet interesting mix of 80s-style, mainstream metal with a dark, gothic thematic content. Tony Martin's voice may ultimately have been a bit too sweet and polished for Black Sabbath, yet he is undoubtedly the most technically impressive singer the band has ever worked with. My only beef with the album is the mix, in which I feel Martin's voice is way too loud and Iommi's guitar is often too low. That is unfortunate, because Headless Cross features some of the most impressvie guitar work I've ever heard from Mr. Iommi.

If you are a Black Sabbath fan that enjoys or is at least open to experiencing 80s/90s period, I highly recommend Headless Cross. On the other hand, if you are the type that believes Ozzy is the be all, end all of Black Sabbath, then, well....no comment.

5 out of 5 stars Metal Magic.......2007-01-10

This is getting almost impossible to find. The BEST Black Sabbath recording EVER! Buy 2 so when you wear the first one out you will still have a primo one left. This IS for serious metal fans and headbangers.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Tony Martin Era Release.......2006-10-15

For many the only two eras of Black Sabbath that count are the years with either Ozzy or Dio at the helm. Personally I also liked a lot of the material that was produced with Tony Martin leading the band as well. "Headless Cross" was the second album to feature Martin on vocals with the only remaining original member being Tony Iommi. Drummer extraordinaire Cozy Powell is also along for the ride on this one. The music on this album is for the most part quite strong, with Martin's Dio like vocals and Iommi's patented guitar technique leading the way. Powell and bass player Lawrence Cottle emote a dark and foreboding rhythm section, and long time Sabbath keyboard collaborator Geoff Nicholls is up front more than usual on this one This lyrics get pretty dark here with Lucifer / the Devil / Satan being mentioned in just about every song. It almost comes across as if they were writing some of this stuff for shock values sake in order to possibly garner some controversy. Some of these lyrics could be a definite turn off for more religious oriented people. The title track managed to get some radio / MTV airplay (I remember seeing the video a couple of times on head bangers ball back in the day) and served as a bit of a comeback for the band following the lackluster sales of the previous two albums. Along with the title track highlights for me include "Devil and Daughter", "Kill In the Spirit World" and the album closer "Nightwing". I don't think that this is the best Tony Martin era release, but it is a solid album.

4 out of 5 stars One of the greatest with Martin........2006-04-16

Ok, first of all we can't make a comparation between the "Ozzy era" and the other singers periods because the music and mentality of both are not the same, they are like two different bands.
If we want to compare this album to any other, it would be the TYR album, because both are very similar in many aspects, and have Tony Martin as singer.
HEADLESS CROSS is good, but TYR is a lot better in music and lirics, These are the best two best albums with Martin. FORBIDDEN and CROSS PURPOSES suck!!!!!!!!!

Product Description

The Red Button is made up of Los Angeles-based singer-songwriters Seth Swirsky and Mike Ruekberg. Ruekberg's indie credentials are rock solid as writer and singer for beloved Minneapolis-based pop-rockers Rex Daisy and wrote the soundtrack for an underachieving but beloved indie film (Dummy, starring Adrien Brody). Swirsky's legitimate music credentials are impressive: He's written hit songs for dozens of artists, ranging from Al Green to Tina Turner to Taylor Dayne. (He's also written three hugely successful books about baseball!) The two met in 2004, when Seth was recording his first solo album, Instant Pleasure (which went on to win Best Pop Album at the 2005 Los Angeles Music Awards). They shared one passion above all: A love of concise, melodic pop songs. She's About to Cross My Mind is the result of that meeting: eleven pop songs created, says Goldmine Magazine, the way God and Paul McCartney must have intended. Amplifier Magazine and International Pop Overthrow Music Festival founder David Bash says Swirsky and Ruekberg can now wear their rightful crown as the Peter Holsapple/Chris Stamey of the New Millennium .

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pure pop perfection.......2007-07-06

I've always thought there are two kinds of songs that stick in your head: those that stick like chewing gum on the bottom of your shoe (Barry Manilow songs and the Leave it to Beaver theme song), and those that stick like the memory of your first kiss (early Beatles, Buddy Holly, Lovin' Spoonful). The ability to produce the second kind is one of the rarest and most valuable gifts in music, and one that has been in very short supply for the past 30 years. She's About to Cross My Mind Again is the happy exception. The whole CD is full of cheerful melodies and skipping beats of a kind not heard since Merseybeat was the big thing. But be warned: these songs are seriously addictive. If you listen to "Can't Stop Thinking About Her" just once, the song will take over your mind for the rest of the day. You will forget about your job and your children, and you won't know--or care--where you are. You'll find yourself walking to the rhythm, rocking back and forth and grinning like an idiot as the song runs on an endless loop through your head. You'll find it hard to have a conversation with anyone else because all you want to do is burst out singing the chorus. The one consolation is that you'll be as happy as a person can be. There's no way you listen to these songs and be anything but giddy.

The lyrics are as sunny and light as the melodies, exactly as they should be in this kind of music. It is blissfully free of attitude, too. No mid-tempo, monotone, mumbled slacker songs anywhere in sight, thank god. Just youthful joy and the miracle of a perfect three-minute single.

5 out of 5 stars modern-day version of a 60s band - for those of us who miss the 60s!.......2007-07-01

carefree & whimsical, she's about to cross my mind is reminiscent of the monkeys, the beatles and the beach boys. play this music to set your mood-ring to happy-go-lucky fun, on your way to work or while you cruise the streets of venice beach in your stylin' VW van.

4 out of 5 stars Original and familiar.......2007-05-29

This is a wonderful CD. The sound is familiar - it reminds me of many other groups that I have loved through the years, but at the same time, I feel it is entirely original. I look forward to more music from these wonderful musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Blast of 60's POP.......2007-04-08

Shades of the Lovin' Spoonful, Beatles, Knickerbockers, assorted 60's garage sounds and swingin' London sounds permeate this disc. If the samples are enough to pique your interest, then by all means make the purchase now! Most of the songs are between 2-3 minutes long, perfect for yesteryear's AM radio format. They would fit right into today's 'oldies' radio station playlists, and nobody would be the wiser. Standout tracks: all of them! The Red Button Rules!!

4 out of 5 stars What a "real" record is.......2007-04-06

Retro and clean. That is the immediate reaction upon hearing this record on a whole. Make no mistake, this is no special single or group of tracks, it is an ALBUM: 11 songs each with their own fingerprint and message, coming together to form one giant cornucopia of unique melodic mayhem. By accident, the first track I heard from this album was "Can't Stop Thinking About Her" because my CD player was having issues. The irony is that all of the songs blend together in sort of a dreamy almost happily defiant mission.

This is clearly a packaged deal, from the girl on the cover of the album to the tamborine that inhabits the disc itself. The Red Button is very self aware and knows what it is, a time machine offering a blueprint of lyrical sass and energy to future artists intent on tackling the 60's musical revolution.

Very impressed with the songwriting and drums on selected tracks by Monty DeCarlo, its a gathering of talent that is hard to ignore. I love these types of bands because you get the feeling that every decision made by the group was in response to the MUSIC and not the PEOPLE. Too often, songs these days are written for what is assumed people want, and not for the message itself. Calculated and rewarding, tracks like "Gonna Make You Mine" and "Free" are examples of singles you would be hard pressed not to smile at. I'm not much of a 'review' guy, but perhaps the best compliment I can give is that I wanted to talk about it. Its personal I'm sure for the artists, and an experience for listeners like me.
