4 out of 5 stars Remixes of the band's late 1990s material.......2003-02-09

In the late 1990s the Creatures came back to life in a huge way. They released the ep Eraser Cuts and the album Anima Animus and this was among some of the best material ever. This is an album of remixes approved by the Creatures. A bunch of their dance music DJ fans decided to remix a lot of songs from this period and the Creatures picked the best of the lot. Its a really fun and interesting album yet should play second fiddle to the Creatures original material. Not an essential release but an excellent one indeed.

5 out of 5 stars The next level (!).......2002-10-26

I gotta give this 5 stars because the stuff that works here is incredible. There are some fantastic mixmaster wizards on board to cut things up. The first track, "Prettiest Star" is so commanding and sexy it blows me away. The original really needed revamping, and it gets it here in spades. "Slipping Away," loaded with atmosphere, feels like wandering through a dreamhouse maze. "Guillotine" is the kind of experimental groove I really get into - very disconcerting. Only the Radio Friendly "Say" remix is somewhat less than compelling, everything else is out of this world!

4 out of 5 stars "i'll have a siouxsie/budgie tossed salad, please.".......1999-10-22

HYBRIDS is very interesting...it takes a few listens to get over the fact that this is just another "remix" album. once you do, you begin to pick out the subtle little sluicings of genius mixing - because it's all in the details when it comes to scratching and mixing and morphing and deconstructing....one unexpected benefit of hearing all the songs reiterated and regurgitated is that the original versions seem that much better. some mixes work better than others: "slipping away" is brilliant. "2nd floor" is intoxicating, i love it. the spirit of the original is not only present, it is enhanced with strawberry bliss. "turn it on" touches on something, but never quite attacks it, especially given the fact that budgie's fierce percussions are all but removed from the remix. which is sad. still, it's good...but when a remix is devoid of any of the songs original elements, it gets lost in the machine, so to speak. "exterminating angel" could have been a bit more powerful. the original version is so raw, so pure and grinding...the remix is a bit fluffy. "guillotine" feels like a mess - it's all jumbly and jumpy and siouxsie is nowhere to be found in it. but all in all, this is a tremendouis effort by all involved. it is apparent that the magic mixers are artists who have been inspired by siouxsie and budgie and who are having fun "babysitting" their incarnations. it's like when the parent comes home to find that the sitter has had a party - friends and food and chaos strewn about the house and the kids sitting in the middle of it all sipping a beer....

Album Description

With 50 years of drumming behind him, innovative jazz pioneer Jack DeJohnette introduces "Hybrids," the debut album by The Ripple Effect, his latest collaborative project to be released on his own Golden Beams Productions on October 4, 2005. Featuring seven interpretations of previously recorded material (three of which have never been released) and one brand new track, Hybrids is a continuation of what DeJohnette has been accomplishing for a half-century: inspiring and creating music without boundaries. Produced and remixed by sound engineer Ben Surman, with guidance by DeJohnette himself, Hybrids launches jazz into the 21st century.

Blending shades of African jazz, reggae and dance music into DeJohnette's already groove-heavy rhythmic patterns, The Ripple Effect's Hybrids is an eclectic foray into numerous disciplines that works as a whole. Borrowing heavily from "Music from the Hearts of the Masters," his 2005 release alongside Gambian kora master Foday Musa Suso, the African influence is tempered by the gorgeous vocals of Marlui Miranda, the most acclaimed and recognized performer and researcher of Brazilian Indian music. Multi-instrumentalist John Surman adds lilting strains of clarinet, saxophone and recorder, while Big Al polishes the project with effervescent guitar riffs. The ingenuity of each song lends itself to a broad audience.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic album!.......2006-08-24

Hybrids is an amazing electronic album. Jack DeJohnette is brilliant on this CD. The songs are intriguing from each individual sound mixed together. Each track has its own groove. There are some songs that even have a specific type of cultural feel to them. Hybrids has an unmistakable sound that can not be imitated quite the same. It is a truly fantastic album with a genuine sense of sound. A masterpiece!

      Album Description

Not many artists debut with a "greatest hits" album. Then again, Wendy Ip doesn't like to do anything the conventional way.

Her first official release, Fan Favorites So Far (2001), is a compilation that draws from recording sessions in New York, Los Angeles as well as from her first sessions in Canada.

Ip gained her first studio recording experience in Vancouver, B.C., resulting in her first fan favorite, "So This Is My Life". But feeling like she had been a little bullied, she swore she'd do everything herself the next time. Her next string of songs was recorded partly in Vancouver and partly in her hometown of Winnipeg. Sure enough, Ip sang and played everything on it. She had just finished a prolific period of songwriting and wanted to "put it all down and get it all out". To this day, many people's favorite Wendy Ip songs are from this collection, entitled What's Normal Anyway? (1998).

Although colleagues and fans convinced her that the fresh- sounding recordings of "Just Wendy", "Our Little Room" and "Elaine" were delicious as they were, Ip wanted to present herself as more than just a songwriter. She was also a performer and wanted to reflect her strong and eccentric personality through the production of her songs. In experimenting with different producers, Ip learned much about how to create certain sounds and moods, as well as how to articulate what she expected.

She worked with New York producer Joseph Briggs who brought out her New York attitude in "All The Pain". In producing her Los Angeles tracks "At The Seams", "Too Heavy" and "Can't Get Mad", Joe Berardi let Ip's piano playing shine. As well, he recruited friend ex-Pixie Joey Santiago to play guitar.

The album concludes with one of Ip's personal favorites, the chilling "Most Of The Time".

5 out of 5 stars A personal Top Ten pick for 2001!!.......2002-01-11

Imagine the talents of Elton John & Bernie Taupin tossed together in one individual. Now sprinkle a dash of Elvis Costello & Ben Folds into the mix. Oh yeah, and for good measure, make that lucky individual a very attractive woman and you'd be looking directly at clever & quirky songstress Wendy Ip.

I listen to new artists and new CDs every week. I purchased Wendy's CD after witnessing one of her live performaces, late last summer. Her music has dominated my CD player ever since! I love pop music. Not the teen based genre. I'm talkin' the pop music that the Beatles imported our way nearly 40 years ago. I'm a sucker for a catchy hook. Wendy Ip's "Fan Favorites So Far" succeeds at all of the above! Her lyrics, her melodies, her voice and her supporting musicians are all top notch. Ip writes with wonderful sensitivity while never losing her sense of humor. What's more, she can catch your ear with such uptempo numbers as "At The Seams" and "So This Is My Life", while tuggin on your heart with ballads "All The Pain" and "Our Little Room" (this one took me right back to my post college days of economic/emotional struggle). Ip does it all & does it well.

If you prefer pure pop for adult people, do yourself a favor and allow Wendy Ip into your life. I did and now anxiously await her future releases. "Just Wendy" is Just Great!!

3 out of 5 stars Decent remixes, but might not appeal to Creatures fans.......2001-07-16

Following the success of the electronic infused Anima Animus album, The Creatures released a plethora of remixes on singles, eventually leading to this album of electronic remixes, largely of the electronica, drum and bass, and trance varieties. While there are a few standout remixes here, most of them dissolve into substandard, repetitive mixes that have little to do with the original tracks other than sampling one or two lines of vocals...

Basically, fans of electronica might find this album worthwhile. However, most of the long-time Creatures fans I know dislike this album and consider it to be the band's worst release.
