From the way people talk, you'd think Steve Albini was an extraterrestrial dropped in our midst or an unpredictable chemical agent introduced into an experiment that has grown depressingly stable. Terraform, the latest record from Shellac, takes this notion and blasts off, adding new, albeit alien, growth to a sterile environment (rock music). The seemingly endless first song, "Didn't We Deserve a Look at You the Way You Really Are," features a numbingly repetitive bass and drums figure with a few fluctuations. After a while (don't ask me how long; time doesn't exist here) Albini's guitar makes tentative scratches, like a timid cat wanting to be let in, before the inevitable eruption. Then the whole process begins again. Futuristic? Or maybe just a bizarro world version of "Stranglehold"? Other pieces conceal (in plain sight) references to Iggy, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and The Yardbirds. It's classic rock, all right. But not as we know it. --John Chandler
Customer Reviews:
Brief album of ugly-intellegent ideas moreso then songs.......2007-02-14
3 1/2
Producer powerhouse Steve Albini always knew how to sustain tension through atmosphere, but when it came to his own musical outings there were either distorted assaults of artfully constructed noise....or pretentious ramblings on half-baked musical noodling. The full bass sound any modern alternative lover has come to enjoy via such classics as Nirvana's In Utero bearing his trademark is in full effect, no matter how repetitive some of the songwriting actually is. Some of this repetition benefits from their explosive, non-conformist outbursts which heightens the minimalism and nastiness, but more of it tends to chug on, concerned with nothing but expressing itself in a musical cynicism that echoes this jaded frontman's warped genius.
Another solid Shellac record.......2004-08-27
First off, this album is not as good as "At Action Park", but not many albums are. With that said, this album still ventures into new territory and brings a lot of new sounds to the table. "Didn't we deserve....,etc.", the first track, clocks in at around 15 minutes I think, I never payed attention, I am just guessing. The song is an invention that first lulls you to sleep with the repetitive bass and drum lines, then pulls you back with changing drum lines and comes crashing in at the end with Steve's grinding, metallic guitar sound. The rest of the songs on the album are also great tracks, although there are no standouts on this one like on "At Action Park". If they would have used the original version of "Copper" instead of the sped-up, hurried sounding version found on this album, I would have definitely given this album 5 stars. Why they chose this weaker version is beyond me, but then again, so are a lot of things going on in a Shellac record. Well worth picking up.
Shellac beats your ears senseless, but you know you want it........2003-04-11
There's something about Shellac that makes you feel whichever of their three lp's you are listening too is the best thing next to crack rocks and puppy dogs. Therefore, it's hard to accurately say which Shellac album is my favorite. However, the one i've listened to the most and for the longest time would be Terraform. There's something about that first song that just weeds out all the pop fans, leaving just us noise addicts in their wake. From there, the album branches into all sorts of distorted disjointed guitar slabs, bass lines that push you up to the edge, and drums that pummel you but leave you begging for one more crash cymbal. Pick this baby up, then get Action Park, then 1000 Hurts, and all on vinyl, because it's Steve's music, what he says goes...
Didn't we deserve such an album?.......2003-03-03
I first heard Albini's newest band live at Greece (Southern Europe, not NY) when this album was their latest work, and there were about 400 people in that little An Club. "Hey Steve, have you guys brought any CDs of the band with you that people here can buy?" was asked by the lead singer of the support band that night ("Bokomolech"-a local band). "No, we haven't", Steve plainly replied. Well, either he's not much of a buziness genious, or he just doesn't care (I 'll go for the latter).
I remember them playing the first song of this album. It went on and on. Haunting; neverending. The bass player had his eyes closed, and just played, played, played... Steve was looking at times into the empty space somewhere on the wall at the other end of the club; and at times at the puzzled crowd. Yeah, they 're here to listen to you, Steve, but how many understand what's going on here? How many would write a song like DWDALAYTWYRA if they had a band?
So, you think this song lasts too long? No, not long enough. I 'm not being sarcastic. I wish it went on for hours. I usually use the "repeat" button when I listen to it. This is the kind of music I 've been looking for, even without knowing.
I think that "Copper" and "Canada" are the next best moments here. Both for music and lyrics. "Copper" is sth like a pop(!)-punk song, short but exciting. "Copper, let us take you, to a furnace where we 'll break you". "Canada" actually has sth-close-to-a-solo in it, which is the best part of the song.
"House full of Garbage" also features a minimalistic going-on-and-on bassline, but it's not as good as the opening track (not as long, either). It's quite interesting, though, and it's quite close to the days of Big Black's "Songs About F......".
A lot(?!) of people also seem to like "This is a picture". Yes, the lyrics are beautiful, but the guitar doesn't quite cut the mustard for me.
In my opinion, these are the most interesting moments of this album. I 'm not rating it 5 stars, just because there are some songs in it I could live without. But most of the songs I mentioned are certainly 5-star songs. If you like bands like Fugazi or, especially, The Jesus Lizard, Shellac are for you. Even if "copper will never be gold".
Let me add that there's one more similarity between Shellac and Jesus Lizard. Their albums don't just feel like just-another-bunch-of-good-songs. While listening to them, I feel that there's nothing more important in the world than these songs. "We 're not talking about escaping life, here. We 're talking about life itself".
Nice.......2002-02-27
Certainly, Shellac's prettiest record. This is not to say it lacks oomph at all. The long opener "Didn't We..." makes you wait about halfway through the song for variations on its 4 note bass riff and simple drum accompaniment. Albini eventually enters with some good guitar hurt. Many of you may skip this one, but you'll be rapt by the remaining half hour or so "This is a Picture" is certainly one of Shellac's finest moments, where Albini meditates on death and love rather innocently(for him,at any rate-his cynicism usually glosses over any real human emotions he may have), singing, "There are angels there...you know where they make angels...heaven, that's where...I can't wait to die/I can find me some/its where Ill find my wife/when Im through with my present one". Another fine moment is "Mouthpiece"... Overall, this record is laden with Shellac's best riffing and you may actually be able, as you can see above, divine the meaning of the song!

Aural Enjoyment.......2002-01-10
Amazingly, this CD contains 10 tracks and they are all good.
I'm glad I was introduced to pH10- I am now a true believer.
Highly recommend it, very entertaining. Bubbly breaks, bass that makes your heart ache for bigger speakers...these guys are pioneers, and I bet they will continue to raise the bar in the future. NICE JOB!
I'm no particle physicist, but.......2002-01-09
pH10 investigates the inner structures of beats using
both phenomenological models and field-theoretic
approaches. This CD takes me on a colorful journey to the depths
of pure imagination. Along with fractional electric charge,
the cd also has flava in 6 varieties. It banishes the
classical idea of action at a distance. It can be said
that the breaks bounce between the drums and the bass
in such a manner as to draw the two together, making it
a force to be reckoned with. I envision this to bring the
world together on a subatomic level.
...Take that, space coyote...(i.e. this cd kicks butt)
can't help but shake it...!.......2001-12-20
lots of beefy bass... ffffat beats... samples that make me smile wide:)... arrangements for thinking people... ph10 is yummmmy d&b!
Spy Hunter.......2001-12-19
I guarantee you that this will be a single. It's tracks like this that will propel this CD and this genre of music to the main stream.
Keep up the good work.
Essential disc.......2001-12-11
This disc has something for everyone: edgy-but-catchy melody, deep rolling bass, groovy beats, and sneaky-cool samples. "2600 Funkus" is as fun as it is infectious, as is "Spy Hunter" with its shuffling funkified drums and retro melody. "Maize on" gets a bit more serious, but with tasty results. "Corpuscle" has that old-skool flava, but holds up well in todays D&B sets, a dancefloor kicker to be sure.
Quarks and Gluons is tightly produced and energy packed, I cant wait to hear what these guys do next.

Customer Reviews:
Looking forward for more to come!.......2003-05-30
Vitamin D is a really talented DJ. I've seen him spin all over Colorado countless times in the last 10 years. It used to be he was opening up for DJs we were going to see...but in the end, we were always looking forward to the next night out in Denver that he'd be headlining. In addition to being a great DJ, he's a also a great guy who was fundamental in helping develop the underground music scene in Boulder and Denver.
As for this cd, I like it alot. There are definitely high and low points for me, but overall it's just a really good, bangin' house mix that keeps my head nodding non-stop. The mix of the Pound Boys' "Betty" is the single best pick I heard last year...everyone I play if for just flips. Definitely my favorite overall.
Like many DJ discs I have, this one doesn't fully do justice to Vitamin D's talents as a DJ. I've seen him spin tech house sets that have no equal, anywhere! Still, it's a great "debut" release (so-quoted because of all of the other stuff he put out prviously on his own label 'Daisy Age' and who knows what else). I'm really looking forward to more realeases from Vitamin D in the years to come. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.
Performance Comment.......2002-05-28
I saw Derick in Toronto when I went up there late april. His set was amazing. I was totally glued to the tables to catch a glimps of any unseen tricks. I'm a local dj myself, therefore I know what I'm looking for in a set. Vitamin D sure knows his stuff. Well anyhow, I would just like to comment that he is a great performer. As for the cd, I haven't heard it yet, but I just purchased it myself. Peace:
Dj Vitamin D is Amazing.......2002-04-19
One word..........Amazing.
One of the US's best Dj and producer. His natural talents shine all over this mix. His selection of tunes is a strong indication of his musical depth. One ear to the ground and the other to the stars. World Class. Supreme talent. Keeping the future coming fast and around the corner.

Product Description
"Terraform" is the first full collaborative album for longtime friends Steve Roach and Loren Nerell. The two composers met in LA in 1981, back in the early days of the electronic music scene. It was a time when like-minded musicians who understood the importance of emerging technology were coming together in local clubs and performance venues to share what they knew and learn from one another. After years of friendship and occasional musical collaboration the two decided to convene in a relaxed setting to see what they could distill from a blending of their collective talents and individual styles to accomplish common aims. Terraform emerged from their mutual desire to create an organic, surreal and deeply ambient environment of langorous humid soundscape enviroments. Through a labyrinth of studio techniques, a kind of audio terraforming was developed. Heavily textured and mood altering, the long uninterrupted flow seemingly slows time down by way of the surreal dark ambient soundforms found in much of Roach's work. Nerell brings the steamy, evanescent blend of his mutated Indonesian sources, a signature sound that defines his previous releases for Amplexus, Side Effects and Soleilmoon.

Customer Reviews:
keepin tha UK junglist sound massive.......2002-01-16
this album is pure breaks, no 4/4 brainless stomping here. Very much keeping the UK sound of drum n bass, whilst bringing in influences from much further afield, Variations... brings a melodic and dark present to the party.
Steeped in twisting breaks and very low bass, the vocals and melodies push on through, adding a direction and drive to the tunes.
This is not a cutting edge album, but who needs to be on the edge all of the time, you just get bloody feet...but it is forward thinking and new, whilst using older influences, and to be honest it was a breath of fresh air to hear some good tunes mixed and produced well, rather than to have someone trying to fry my brain with unintelligible breaks for 45 minutes.
all in all, a good album if you like your drum n bass intelligent, dark and groovy.

Man... for two kids from Denver, these guys have really taken Drum 'n Bass to a whole new level. Whether it's in mix CD's such as this one or their own track production, they have done more for American Jungle than most other American DJs or Producers. Buy this CD! You won't be disappointed!

For those not in the know, D.Ecco & Sabotage (along with Fury) are the hosts of the perpetually #1 rated D&B night in N. America. While other "big name" D&B DJ's are seeming to play it safe, these guys are a consistent breath of fresh air. From start to finish, this mix CD does not disappoint.

Album Description
Terraform Records originated in Denver and has made a big impression on the electronic music world in just a few short years. Jeremy Golden, John Chaime, and Eric Gerd are the prime motivators behind this shaping of sonic structures. Seeking to harness and broadcast the myriad audio frequencies permeating the planet, Terraform Records has quickly spanned the gap between the local and global sounds of dance music. The label first burst into the world as a series of fine singles for dance floors and DJs, beginning with the Systems EP 1 in 1995. The music's quality and strength ensured that Terraform would become a success. Beat visionaries the Vandal have been there all along, popping up on compilations alongside such acts as Josh Wink, Rabbit in the Moon, Agent Babylon, and Le Pimp. New hybrid forms arise when the funk-electro-tech rhythms are allowed to commingle. Terraform Records is now a part of the aural ecosystem: keep your ears open as the 21st century will see very good things from the realm of Terraform Records!

Album Description
Michael Anthony - Aesthetic Theories (DJ Mixed CD) San Francisco Spundae resident Michael Anthony takes you on a tech-house journey featuring tracks by Meat Katie, General Midi, Hakan Lidbo and DropCulture.
Customer Reviews:
An original mixture of tech-trance, breaks, and house.......2002-01-23
Michael Anthony has developed a reputation as a kind of creative, eclectic *wunderkindt* among west coast dj's, and this mix on the Terraform label shows why. Anthony serves up a delicious nonstop set here that starts out in a kind of tech-breaks vein, then in Atty Mezcal's "Attymatic" slides into a sound that has affinities with dark, percussive, progressive trance. In the middle portion of the mix there emerges an hypnotic, tech-trance groove that becomes perhaps a bit repetitive in lengthy tracks like Zero Zero's "Paradisco." The mood shifts, however, partway through Issi Noho's "First Snow," which bursts into trancey breaks halfway through. From here, the surprises continue: Zero Zero's "Eastwards" has a delightfully eastern psytrance texture; Tom Chasteen's airy, jazzy "Salom" features a guitar line that is reminiscent of that old San Francisco rocker Carlos Santana; Michael Anthony contributes his own dose of heavy, funky breakbeat in "Come Alive"; Hakan Lidbo's "Bulldozer Funk" has an eighties disco feel; and to wrap things up, Head Affect offers up a final dose of funky dancefloor breaks in "Fakin."
Overall, this is a set that stands out for its mixture of styles and its originality; for most listeners, there is virtually nothing included here they will have heard before on other dj mixes. There is flow and movement and beat and texture, and the set inspires the listener to get up and dance. That makes this a pretty darned good mix, in my book.
