I don't own this album but when I heard 4 Elements,come correct,
and jump to live I was amazed.These songs were awesome!

Chronic Furture, as a band seems to have matured immensely with their album 4 Elements. Singer Mike Busse in particular brings energy and extraordinary vocals to this cd. The lyrics are all positive, not violent and still cool, which is fairly revolutionary in today's musical world. You have to give ups to anyone that can write such excellent words, put it with music that spread good vibes and is also rocking hard core, all at the same time. These boys have done it. I recommend this to anyone who listens to Rage Against the Machine and Limp Bizkit, but urge everyone to give it a try as Chronic Future defines themselves seperately from any other band out there. I am even more excited to see what they come up with in the future. After hearing this album you know these guys are only going up.

The first time i heard "Come Correct" i was amazed! The band is freaking sweet. Every song on this CD simply rocks. If your are looking for a CD that you will never stop listening to buy this.

THey don't really sound like 311. There only one song on 4 Elements that sounds like 311. I loved the Chronic Future cd.

The New Life.......2004-03-04
Worth buying solely for the first two pieces, Incipit Vita Nova, a lovingly unfolded song - half tribute, half lullaby - for string trio and David James's exceptional voice, and Glorious Hill, for a quartet of voices, which showcases Bryars' ability to write vocal music which changes constantly but maintains an essential succinctness of expression. Bryars manages to personalise his source material and create music of depth, imagination and cunning.
ACHINGLY BEAUTIFUL.......2001-12-09
This would be a great album to give someone who thinks they don't like modern, contemporary composers. Gavin Bryars work is always fresh and challenging, but he never 'rubs it in the listener's face'. His compositions have form, structure, intelligence, emotion, and -- gasp! -- melody. This is not a study in dissonance challenging us to listen to it all the way through -- when it's over, we want more.
The Hilliard Ensemble is, of course, at the pinnacle of their field. Their voices inhabit that razor's edge between 'perfect' and 'human', with taste, ease and without pretention. They have reached the status that their name being attached to a recording is the musical eqivalent of the Good Housekeeping Seal -- there is quality to be found within. They are featured on only one track here as a group, 'Glorious hill' -- it was commissioned by them, and you can tell it was written with their talents in mind. This is one of the most singularly beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard.
David James, the Ensemble's countertenor, is also heard on the cd's opening track, 'Incipit vita nova', written by Bryars to celebrate the birth of a daughter to a couple of his friends. His voice is heard alongside violin, viola and cello here. Bryars' text -- rendered into Latin -- is one of the most eloquent expressions of the wonder -- and the promise -- of birth I've ever read.
'Four elements' also features the voice of David James, although it is largely instrumental. The composition is built in movements to represent water, earth, air and fire -- it was originally written as a dance piece. Bryars places this in the hands of his 'large chamber ensemble' -- 10 players (alto sax, bass clarinet, fluegelhorn, French horn, trombone, piano, electric keyboard, two percussionists, double-bass), plus James and a conductor -- but the arrangement and performance gives a real feeling of intimacy.
The album's final track, 'Sub Rosa', was written by Bryars as a tribute to Bill Frisell. He explains in the notes that he was particularly impressed with a track from Frisell's IN LINE album (also on ECM) -- in 'Sub Rosa', Bryars paraphrases and expands upon line from Frisell's composition 'Throughout', from IN LINE. This piece is performed by Bryars' smaller ensemble (6 players: recorder, clarinet, violin, vibraphone, piano, double-bass).
The music on this disc is, as I mentioned, intelligent and challenging -- but it's also extremely listenable. Bryars' work shows us that the work of 'contemorary composers' need not alienate potential listeners by extremism for its own sake. His work is both thoughtful and beautiful.

For those expecting the deep dub throb and surreal ambiences of previous albums in Bill Laswell's Sacred System series, the gentle strains of the opening track, "Ethiopia," will be a surprise. It's a serene lament from Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw. She calls out in pitch-bending eddies on a caressing wave of glassine synthesizer textures, with Laswell playing guitar in a koralike cycle. But by the next track, "The Lower Ground," the familiar sound of Laswell's dark dub bass and Karsh Kale's trancey tabla throb under a melody played into echoing space on a melodica (or sample thereof). It's an homage to Augustus Pablo, the Jamaican reggae artist who built his career around the wind-blown keyboard instrument. This is a smaller crew than usual for Laswell (just three instrumentalists), who doubles up on keyboards and some very snaky guitar. As with all Sacred System discs, there are moments of torpor and grooves without a guide. Laswell remains an avatar of ambient dub space, but he pushes it in unusual directions, as on Gigi's closing "Jerusalem," which gives the album an unlikely but welcome anthemic lift at the end. --John Diliberto

If you love DUB and drum & bass, etc., and prefer your dub
clean of vocals, you may have avoided buying this CD because
of the presence of a vocalist. But I am here to tell you,
3 of 6 tracks on this CD are not only vocal-free, but absolutely
up there with the best DUB Bill Laswell has ever done; and it
is on the brilliance of these dubs that I rate the CD 5 stars.
There's nothing wrong with Gigi, but for dub-heads only, if
you program this CD for tracks 2,3 and 5......you will be treated
to some of the best DUB of all time!
Going out in slow style.......2002-12-20
For the final installment of the Dub Chamber cycle, we are presented with Bill Laswell's "Book of Exit." Armed with bubbling, broiling, glooping sound effects, in addition to shadowy echoes and whispers, the overall sound is slow and mysterious. The closest thing to compare this sound with is the soundtrack to the computer games "Myst" and "Riven." It's creepy; washes of audio gurgling up and fading out suddenly. Something you'd want to meditate, fall asleep or read to.
Then there's the other side of the album. Laswell's self-proclaimed prodigy Ejigayehu Shibabaw. "Gigi" has sung on every one of Laswell's albums since her own debut (entitled "Gigi," a cd that i HIGHLY recommend) to varying degrees of success. But her wonderful raw voice seems out of place in this cd. Gigi must carry the cd with only her voice, as Laswell's sounds turn boring and slightly droning after a bit.As soon as you hear her for over 5 or so minutes, you want the track to wrap up, but as soon as a track without her comes burbling through the speakers, you want her back to alleviate the monotony.
This seems to be the contradiction: which would you rather listen to? Somewhat dull and uninspired audio washes, or a voice that (while beautiful) has to drag the rest of the track along behind her?
Overall, I enjoyed this cd to its fullest, which isn't that full at all. (And if the lyrics on the song "Jerusalem"-- the only English on the cd--were any more trite, i'd have to hit the skip button. repeating the words "blood reign" (or rain, who knows?) doesn't make a song poignant and refined.)
Laswell goes out not with a bounce in his step, but with a shuffle, a murmur, a gurgle, and an echo.

I feel this is Bill Laswell's best cd in the Dub Chamber series. If you are a Laswell fan this is definately one for the collection. I feel the best tracks are " The Lower Ground ", " Bati ", and " Jerusalem ". Gigi's vocals are quite pleasent to listen to. I hope this can be helpful to a future buyer.

Rock instruments amassed in orchestral-size forces. It wallows in that strange area where minimalism and classic rock music unconsciously make their closest approaches to each other. Definitely reminescent of Branca.
A couple of times, while listening to this CD, I would think to myself "That was a really interesting piece, but then it ended so abruptly. Why doesn't he ever develop any of his ideas?" Then I would remember that I'm listening to a CD of excerpts. I'll be buying the 3-CD set when it comes out.

...except for the snippets here, which sound great. But I just thought people might want to know that this disc is a sampler for an upcoming box set (three CDs, I think). On the box set, some or all of these songs will be available in versions of greater length.

Stick with the vocal music.......1999-07-13
The two vocal works, "Incipit Vita Nova" and "Glorious Hill", are captivating and beautiful, and I give them 5 stars. However, the two "jazz"-oriented instrumentals, "Four Elements" and "Sub Rosa", drone on excruciatingly (and I'm a Morton Feldman fan, not in principle opposed to slowly evolving patterns).
