Imagine Frank Zappa composing the soundtrack for Ed Wood's Plan Nine from Outer Space, or the Residents unleashing a techno-dance project: that should give you some idea of Mr. Bungle's Disco Volante, an album of cheesy synthesizers, mangled disco beats, virtuosic playing, and juvenile noises. Like the Residents, Mr. Bungle is a Northern California band that obscures its true identity (it shares members with Faith No More) by prohibiting photos of its members and by using such funny names as I Quit (the drummer) and Uncooked Meat Prior to State Vector Collapse (the keyboardist). Like Zappa, the Mr. Bungle musicians like to show off their classical, jazz, and worldbeat influences in fast, difficult passages that are technically impressive but never seem to go anywhere. All but three of the album's dozen pieces feature lyrics, but the vocals are so deeply buried in the mix that the words are virtually indecipherable. The pieces are more accurately described as aural montages than songs, for short sections erupt and suddenly disappear, replaced by another passage just as well played and just as clever but with little connection to what preceded it. For listeners who enjoy the constant surprise of such arbitrary musical detours, Mr. Bungle provides much better musicianship than the Residents but less coherence than Zappa. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Even more demented than the first.......2007-06-29

Disco Volante isn't as much of a classic as the first, but it's more weird, and weird in the best way possible. So much, it makes Trout Mask Replica look sane. It's even more harder to describe, not to re-hash what Lord Chimp said.

It's not really a fun cd, it;s got some fun but it dosen't seem like hearted like the first (which was freaky at times). Violenza Domestica is freaky, especially if you listen to it at one A.M. Desert Search For Techno Allah is a freakin' sweet mix of techno and arabian music. The Bends will make you question music, and Everyone I Went To HIgh SChool With IS Dead is creepy. I can't reccomend sound samples enough, but it you like weird music, I can't reccomend a garuntee you will like this. 30 second sound clips don't do Mr. Bungle Justice.

Don't expect songs like Squeeze Me Macaroni, Love Is A fist, or the Girls Of Porn, believe me, this is one of the darkest albums I have ever heard, even most death metal albums aren't as dark, not even Morbid Angel's Altars Of Madness. I can't really give much except my heartfelt reccomendation. Reccomend if you like cool music.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Crime!!!!.......2007-06-13

This album, like tequila, makes me feel felonious...

Track one - Song for going postal and shooting up your office
Track two - Song to be played whilst commiting arson at night
Track three - Song for doing massive amounts of heroin & cocaine
Track four - Song for engaging in a high speed chase with the cops

I could go further but you get the picture. Only the strong minded can derive strength from Disco Volante. The rest drive minivans and go to PTA meetings...

5 out of 5 stars Can i marry this album?.......2007-05-05

its pretty to describe the music of this album, except to say its just freaking insane. you cant really jump into this album. i couldnt. i had to get used to faith no more, and the equally as strange fantomas. I actually didnt even know this album existed untill one day stumbling upon it in the record store. I was like, "what is this?" it looked like something i would like, and at that time i had recently got into fantomas, suspended animation album. I loved this album right off, because it was un-like any other album i've heard. and it was so unique. crazy time sigitures, weird crap, metal, electronic, lots of organ, cool instrumental sections. its great in its own way. i'm peticulry partial to the closing track, " merry go bye-bye." i just love the melody and the way they arranged it. " carry stress in the jaw," is pretty unique, and what follows, "Spy."( secret song) One of the only, "real" traditional songs on here is, "after school special." its kinda short, until bouncing off into sound effect land. of course the instrumental " backstorkin'" by mike patton is pretty great. more organ. some songs are hard to get into at first, like, " violenza domestica," and "the bends." which has about 10 instumentals in one. overall cool album, great production and cool liner art. a must listen.

4 out of 5 stars Weirdest album I own...well, maybe fantomas.......2007-04-05

I love Bungle, and have tons of their live stuff. But this album is still hard for me to get into. While it is interesting, it's almost a little to weird for weirdness. The trouble is every once and a while we get a little more brillance. Recomended after you try Mr. Bungle and California first...and maybe a few of their underground albums too.

5 out of 5 stars Had to grow on me.......2006-03-16

It took a while but eventually this album grew on me but it did and now i listen to it alot. The best songs are carry stress in the jaw, after school special, ma meeshka mow skwoz, platypus and merry go bye bye. actually this is a great album i was going to give it four stars but i'll give it five now.

Former Wedding Present front man David Gedge has definitively left his former band behind with his new outfit, Cinerama. The guitar-driven lower-case pop of the Wedding Present has been upgraded to Pop with a capital P. Lush, adventurous, and beautifully melodic, Cinerama's second release (following 1998's Va Va Voom) is a veritable feast for the senses. From the opening track's spaghetti Western styled guitar, it's obvious that the band name is no fluke, and the songs on Disco Volante not only draw their sonic inspiration from such classic soundtrack composers as John Barry and Ennio Morricone, but play like mini-films or perhaps short stories put to film. This goes as far as the band's naming one song "Superman" and another "Lollobrigida" (the last name of a premier Italian cinema sex goddess). But, thankfully, "Disco Volante" is completely free of kitsch and irony, and it achieves a kind of timeless glamour that is positively romantic. Stretching beyond the usual pop-rock instrumentation to include accordion, vibes, xylophone, horns, and blankets of swoony strings on most of the tracks, "Disco Volante" manages to sound big but not bombastic, familiar but completely fresh. The key that holds it all together is Gedge's lovely tenor voice and unerring sense of melody, all infused with sort of upbeat good cheer that is a perfect antidote to the legions of nihilistic whiners who have come to dominate popular music in the last few years. Admirably aided by coproducer Steve Albini, the clear-eyed Pop of Cinerama is joy incarnate and sexy to boot. --Carl Hanni

I love thier first Va Va Voom, and this album continues with the same style. This album (like all thier albums)could possibly be considered a little repetitive, but I can put it on repeat and listen to it over and over without getting bored of it.
Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars It's really not as bad as some people are saying..........2002-01-18

I'm really surprised to see some of the negative reviews here and thought I'd add my two-cents worth. At least half the songs here are really well-constructed tunes with sparkling instrumentation and swoony melodies. If the album as a whole gets a tad repetitive, at least it's stuck in a good groove. "145 Degrees" and "Your Charms" are particularly irresistible. People need to get used to the idea that Cinerama is _not_ the Wedding Present.

1 out of 5 stars Ugh.......2001-11-06

What a terrible CD. I'm truly fortunate that I stumbled across this on the Internet, because that means nobody I know listens to it.

1 out of 5 stars The Heart is the Rarest Thing........2001-05-26

Not thrilled with Cinerama's first full-length, I patiently waited for the follow-up, reserving judgement until Gedge settled into his new project. Having digested Disco Volante, I feel that I can safely declare myself wholeheartedly let down by the new direction the former Wedding Present leader has taken.

When I think of the mess TWP gradually got into with their final three releases, it reminds me of the mess Belle and Sebastian had quickly gotten into with the release of "Arab Strap." In both cases a brilliant frontman, adept at tying interesting influences together to form a fresh sounding group, writes a bunch of brilliant and moving songs. Over time the band the frontman has assembled, feeling empowered by a strong cult following I guess, mistakes their frontman's talent for their own, and begins to have a larger hand in the songwriting. The songwriting then, inevitably, weakens. Who knows what B&S's Stuart will do, but Gedge has taken his stab at freedom and abandoned all of the qualities that once made his writing and performance great. Barry-Whitean production (shame on you for playing along, Albini!), lush orchestration that serves no more purpose than to create a feeling of cold plasticity and generic kitsch, trite lyrics, smoove vocals and half-baked composition all serve to make me doubt whether the man behind these songs bears any stronger resemblence to the Weddoe's leader than Eminem. Will the real David Gedge please stand up???!!!???

The kicker is, The Wedding Present had the kind of fluttery, shimmery urgency, that could make you feel like your heart had stopped. Gedge's jackhammer guitar style, far from ham-handed rock'n'roll pounding, created a unique atmosphere that encapsulated the adrenaline kick of love, lust and loss. All of that is gone, and what is left is the sort of wry distance best carried out by Pulp, Momus, Black Box Recorder or Go-Kart Mozart. Those artists have an incredible talent for taking the sound of emotional distance, artificiality and emptiness, and turning it into art. That takes unbelievable wit and cleverness. What Gedge used to do, however, takes heart. That's something one can't fake or learn. I just hope it's something one can regain.

4 out of 5 stars don't listen to those people.......2001-01-29

Stop reviewing the song and album titles. Who cares? Apparently Mr. Bungle doesn't. So, if Mr. Bungle doesn't, are you going to ask David Gedge to compromise his vision for the sake of the consumer. And am I going to mistake Cinerama's Superman for the Flaming Lips', no. Is anybody? No, not ever. Not in a million years. So buy the record if you are a big fan of the Wedding Present and Cinerama. Its not as produced as Va Va Voom, but there aren't many records out there that are. Thats all for today, class.

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20

this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.

Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.

Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-02-24

Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.

3 out of 5 stars Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10

I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.

4 out of 5 stars The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28

Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.

3 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08

This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.
