Customer Reviews:
Finally a Messiah with fervor!.......2005-10-20
I've hunted a thrilling performance of The Messiah through 240 versions so far. This is the best I've found. Some are self-conscious, dutifully singing as instructed. Some are almost childish in their lilt. Some are overblown with so much bombast that you can barely hear the heart of the music. Some are concentrated on faithfulness to the original instruments. If you want a performance that will make you shiver with the power and joy of the music, this is the one. The singers are singing about GLORY. They sound as if they are ecstatic. The musicians are at one with the music and they create a virtual cathedral wherever this CD is played, just close your eyes. Or, let your own imagery, be it celestial, or of great oceans...carry you away.
Great recording!.......2003-09-22
There are so many performances of the Messiah out there that it is very difficult to point to a difinative one, but I'd put this in the catagory of the "very good" ones. As other reviewers have said, every performance is different and has its own character. Each has stronger and weaker points. Here the conductor and musicians have made good, solid musical choices. There is an amazing attention to detail which is not so obvious the first listen through but which makes the piece shine. The tempos seem to be right on, and there is no frivolous over-embellishment by the soloists. There is no attempt to be showey. The dramatic dynamics in the first section of the overture are interesting, but seem to work after you hear it a few times. This performance also includes sections which are often omitted (Second half of "He shall feed his flock," "Thou art gone up on high," "Great was the company of the preachers," and "Death where is thy sting"). I prefer the more intimate quality of a small ensemble of musicians to the mega-performances by the London Philharmonic, Vienna State Opera Orchestra, etc.. As with this performance, the smaller group lends a clarity to the music, where the larger ensembles can get a little "muddy" at times. Just my personal preference. Overall, this is a very good performance, and certainly the low price (being on the Naxos lable) makes this a clear choice.
Good and Bad.......2000-04-09
I was more interested in "The Messiah" for the religious content than as a music critic, but this was too much. The strings are tinny. The orchestra is plodding. The soloists and choir are thankfully very good and seem to understand the meaning of the words. It is a shame the sound mix is uneven. The male parts come across loud and clear, but the poor women. For instance, No. 9 Oh thou that tellest..., the soloist sounded like she was singing in an echo chamber far from the mike. This is one of the most disappointing versions of "The Messiah" I have heard in a long time.
This is a great recording!.......2000-02-11
I was really surprised with the new that the Messiah's New World premiere was held at Trinity Church in October 1770, twenty-eight years after it was written. This fact only will make one proud in having this CD among his collection.
Anyhow, this is nothing more than a historic detail and would not count if this recording had not an outstanding first-rate ensemble of singers. Without doubt there is no definitive version of Messiah. Each one has its own distinctive touch and feeling and exploring it is always a pleasant journey through imagination.
As stated by the conductor: "we must concede that performing Messiah with twenty singers and an appropriately balanced instrumental ensemble represents, at best, an imperfect comprimise", it will be easy to understand that this recording does not stand among the greatest and will probably carry some imperfections. I will mention two that kind of disppointed me a little bit. The Overture and the Chorus Worthy is the Lamb, for some reason misses the habitual vigor and strenght. Everything else is great and this is definitely a worth buying.

Greatest Punk Record Ever.......2004-01-25
I won't make this lengthy. I bought this in 1986 and after buying hundreds of other punk records, this is my favorite ever. Ever song is an anarchic anthem. The lyrics and music are great.
As someone else said, DO NOT BUY "It's Time to see Who's Who Now." That is a different record and doesn't not have the same power. Buy the original and enjoy!
...if I remember........2001-07-15
you guys sent me the wrong one. I wanted the original version, but instead i got "It's Time To See Who's Who NOW". If i remember correctly, "It's Time To See Who's Who" was the most awe inspiring album i ever heard. Too bad. I'll deal with Mortarhate direcly from now on.

Customer Reviews:
Urgently recommended despite some production missteps.......2007-01-07
This premiere recording makes some very beautiful music available for the first time. The opera was first performed in 1936, and Vaughan Williams continued to make revisions into the mid 1950s. The music is representative of the composer's mature style. In the opera's later version given here, Evelyn Sharp's original book was revised by Ursula Vaughan Williams.
The Poisoned Kiss is a romantic comedy, a fairy tale about the triumph of true love over revenge. The opera is not through-sung; rather, the dramatic action is carried forward by dialogue in a manner reminiscent of Gilbert and Sullivan or the West End. At times, the witty, good-naturedly sarcastic text and playful rhyme schemes are reminiscent of Noel Coward.
The musicians are just about ideal. Hickox leads a luscious performance, capturing by turn the music's pastoral beauty and (not very threatening) irony. The singers are of uniformly high quality, with the characterization and fresh voices of James Gilchrist and Janice Watson as the young lovers deserving special mention. Anne Collins's fruity, wide-vibratoed contralto at times seems to be a musical caricature, but it works nicely in the role.
The production has two major flaws. First, the sound image is placed rather distant from the listener. I felt as if I were sitting towards the back of the auditorium and wanted to move up closer to the stage. The SACD's surround mode did add compensatory perspective and body to the sound, as well as a little extra punch to the thunder, cat shrieks, and other fairy-tale sound effects. The two-channel version sounded significantly flatter and more distant. Second, almost all of the dialogue has been omitted. It would have been enjoyable to hear the music in its dramatic context. Indeed, the abrupt juxtaposition of musical numbers that in performance would be separated by dialogue and a shift of dramatic tone is sometimes jarring. With less than an hour on each disc (and with singers who display such fine diction and acting skills), this is a major missed opportunity. Fortunately, the dialogue is printed in the libretto.
Despite these quibbles, this set is still urgently recommended!

all i wanted to say about conflict was already covered by the other person that reviewed this cd. so wouldn't it be quite asinine for me to say what i think if it is almost exactly similar to someone else's review? for the sake of taking up space, this is one of the best products conflict has put out. but everything they put out is good. if you like good old anarcho punk and are sick of listening to obscure, meaningless, mundane punk, by all means, buy this.
ORIGINAL PUNK.......1999-01-07
Though the lyrics are a bit dificult to understand at times, the release is excellent. In the mid 1970's, very few bands cared enough about the state of human affairs in England to bring in justices and public boredom into the light. When CRASS ( check them out, too) and conflict came about, they tried like all th eother bands to get played and to gig around. When McLaren picked up the Sex Pistols and touted them about in the media as rock and roll's new bad boys, everyone took notice. It wasn't untill bands like Crass, Conflict, Flux of Pink Indians, UK Subs, et al started to use symbols found in an old Anarchist book did the punk scene in England start to use the familiar circle-A symbols found nearly everywhere in "alternative" music today. If you're looking for authentic punk and what it is doing today, then check out this cd by Conflict. Animal rights, human rights, and anti-government stances are all on this cd. Punk is dead- but independant subvert anarchist rebellion music is not.
