Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars takatakati.......2006-02-05

i love this cd, i hear that the past is rooted, and you keep on "finding pieces everywhere", but it is strong, good voice an powerfull words and notes.

4 out of 5 stars Unique.......2005-04-08

It's tough being the son of one of the greatest composers, bandleaders and bassists of the 20th Century; who could live up to that legacy? Confronted with that background, you might expect Eric Mingus to either try to go right up against his father's legacy, or to distence himself from it as much as he could.

In fact, he does neither. He plays bass- certainly not as forcefully as Charles, but he plays it well, in support of his music. And he's a very good singer (check him out on Karen Mantler's "Pet Project"), with a resonant voice that also serves him well in communicating his poetry. (I'm not a huge fan of his poetry, which comes across as a bit too forced, but I do like the delivery). And he does pay slight homage to his father in the album's title, "Um...Er...Uh" being a very witty take on "Mingus Ah Um" that refers to it while conveying a sense of tentitiveness in the reference.

The album is a mixed bag, but if you like Gill-Scott Heron or Leon Thomas you'll probably enjoy Eric Mingus' work as well.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Eric Mingus is a master!.......2000-07-29

Um..Er..Uh is a fantastic blend of jazzy, bluesy music behind Eric Mingus's cool voice. He speaks of many issues which have clearly been emotional points in his life and his feelings are brought out wonderfully. Eric Mingus is unique in his style and this album is not to be missed.
