18 Years On..........2000-11-08
While not an essential purchase in the Crispy Ambulance catalogue (and thus the completely accurate title of the CD), AATF is a fun document of the 1999 reunion. The band sounds tight and Alan Hempsall's voice is as good as it ever was. However, the letdown of sorts is that after one hears the apocalyptic live blowout of FIN (recorded in 1981-82), AAFT is a bit of a limp letdown. Compared to some of the other reunion discs from bands of the same period (Bauhaus' GOTHAM, Wire's IT'S ALL IN THE BROCHURE), perhaps Crispy Ambulance weren't as good at re-generating same said energy 18 years onwards as some of their contemporaries were. Alan in particular sounds a lot calmer and happier than he did on FIN, and a good comparison to this is the track "Chroal": while the version on FIN sounds like he's frothing at the mouth and ready to jump off the stage in a frenzy, he practically croons the song on AATF, almost as if he's doing a punker Tony Bennett.
All in all the sound is crystal clear and the performances are superb, but for a first time sampling of what made Crispy Ambulance so great and a full view of just how powerful the band were live, check out FIN.
Wish I had been at this show!.......2000-10-19
Crispy Ambulance is perhaps one of the most consistently underrated bands. Although this quartet from Manchester only produced one album for Factory Benelux entitled the "Plateau Phase", and some great singles for Aural Assault and Factory Records, the sheer songwriting brilliance and musical prowess is perhaps only outdone by their live performance. Having already listened to "Fin", recorded in the early 1980s, this 1999 concert reunites this stellar band in a seamless and technologically enhanced way. From the opening riffs of classics "Are You Ready", "Deaf" and "The Presence" to a wonderful rendition of Throbbing Gristles "United", they put on a GRRRRRRRREAT show! I have followed lead singer Alan Hempsall's career through the years, (it was his incredible interview of Ian Curtis that convinced me of this man's talent). These guys sound as good - IF NOT BETTER than they did 18 years ago. This is a MUST BUY and a great opportunity for anyone who has never experienced an unknown BRILLIANT band doing what they did and still do best! I have listened to this cd at least 15 times since I purchased it and it gets better with each listen!
