This amazing CD is one of those rare occasions where everything falls into place perfectly. Firstly, the program is very well chosen, spanning just over 3 decades of Hanson's creative career. The opening track, the Fanfare, is not only a terrific way to start, but it finally let's us hear for ourselves one of those "other" fanfares commissioned by Eugene Goosens and the Cincinnati Symphony during World War 2, from which we got Copland's "Fanfare For The Common Man" and the remaining 17 seemed to have gotton lost. Many thanks to Kunzel and Telarc for letting us hear it again at long last.
The other gem here is the "Bold Island Suite," a beautiful musical portrait of a Maine Island, and the feelings one gets from nature, here recorded for the first time, and long overdue. This is a mature Hanson, in total command not only of form, but orchestration as well.
The remaining two works, The "Merry Mount Suite" and "Symphony #2" have been available on LP or CD since Hanson recorded these 2 works himself for Mercury Living Presence, with other offerings from Gerard Schwartz, Leonard Slatkin, and Keith Lockhart, fine recordings and performances all.
But there is something extra about this disc: Erich Kunzel, The Cincinnati Pops, and Telarc's recording team, in an effort that just gels perfectly. Hanson is "America" - pure, simple, straightforward, honest, able to get misty-eyed, or just stand up and cheer. His second Symphony, and "Merry Mount" were already establishing 'the American sound" we've come to associate with Copland 5 years before Copland himself abandonned his early "modern" sound for the "popular" style we known him best for. Kunzel is totally at home with this music, and it is evident right from the start. His sense of form and motion is unmatched here, letting Hanson be Hanson without any added fussing or imposed "interpretations." So the music sings, broods, explodes, muzes, or soars just as Hanson intended. Cincinatti is a virtuoso orchestra, and they toss off Hanson's trickiest passages with ease, while reveling in the sound and emotion.
More than ever before, Telarc has captured an extremely smooth sound while retaining precise image and spacial definition. This is one of the most natural sounding CDs I have ever heard! Buy this album... you won't be disappointed. If you have friends who don't really care for "classical" music, get this for them and I'm sure they'll still enjoy it. Maestro Kunzel has been the head of the Cincinnati Pops for 40 years now... a tenure equal to that of Ormandy with Philadelphia, and the results show it: Orchstra and conductor playing like a chamber ensemble, all of one mind and intent, and Telarc has captured the moment for posterity. Yes, audiophiles and music lovers, the good old days of Mercury Living Presence and RCA Living Stereo are back in the digital age. We long for the team of Mohr-Layton-Reiner-Chicago and Cozart-Fine-Dorati-Minneapolis. Well, here they are: Woods-Bishop-Kunzel-Cincinnati!
I hope Maestro Kunzel isn't even thinking of retiring any time soon!

For several months, it seemed, on my unending quest for enjoyable music, I had been stuck. The newer bands I'd found were unimaginative, scarcely going beyond power chords and one puny vocal line, and though I'll never want to go without my classics, I just wasn't in the mood for them. After a while, I figured the music world was either in desperate want for talent, or I'd lost my sense of taste. Enter Park. I'd heard bits and pieces of songs from this band and liked it, but since it was always far-off in the background, I hadn't tried very hard to learn more about them. I just happened to remember the name one day(in my near-desperation), and ordered their cd. When it finally graced my mailbox, I brought it inside, popped it in and pressed 'play.' Immediately, my ears perk up. "The Ghost You Are" is the opening track, and one of my favorites, on this very consistent album. Starting with a single guitar track, then exploding with full instrumentals, the first few measures of the song had me hooked, having not yet even heard Ladd's vocals. Then, I get farther into the song and *gasp* more than one vocal track! And they aren't even masked by mass-editing! The song comes to a close with a nice little syncopated guitar riff... which seems to be a bit of a signature sound for this group. There isn't a bad song on "No Signal." Personal favorites would be "The Ghost You Are,"mainly for the closing guitar riffs, "S is For Susan" for the vocal harmonies, and "Clue Me In" for the cool time signature and tempo changes. Bottom line- good vocals, good guitars, good bass, good drums. I would recommend this cd to anyone, but if you're even taking the time to read this review, then I'd say it's a must. I know I was refreshingly impressed.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and performed........2003-02-21

First of all, I have to confess my bias: I'm from the same home town as these guys, Springfield, IL. But I really don't know any of them, so it shouldn't count all that much. This is one of the best written CD's I have ever heard in my life. The guitar work is amazing. The lyrics are great. Ladd's voice is awesome. Miles is one of the best drummers I have ever heard . . . I hope these guys really go places. I hope so because A: they deserve it . . . being this good and all; and B: because I can say I'm from the same town as them. Get this CD! Seriously!

5 out of 5 stars In the vein of Midtown and Junction 18.......2002-01-04

I first discovered Park on a compilation with Junction 18 and Midtown. The heavy driving emo guitars and emotional vocals sounded great. I liked their sound because it sounded very familiar. i realized that the vocal and some of the guitars sounded eerily similiar to the aforementioned bands. Park takes the best elements of these two groups while possesing none of their flaws. While Midtown can sound too whiney of write extremely weak lyrics, Park's vocals always sound strong and sincere. Park writes thoughtful, meaning ful lyrics that ooze sincerity. The lyrics show very mature song writing and contain great metaphors for relationships and situations. The instumentation follows in the footsteps of such great emo bands of SDRE and Samiam with changes in tempo and intensity. Guitars rise furiously as the anguished vocals pour out my speakers. Park also avoids Junction 18's penchant for overly sentimental, slower paced songs. While none of them approach Pennywise like speed, they all move along fast enough to keep the listener interested. Park just sounds good, hopefully they'll get the exposure they deserve.

Well people that is what im doing. Im cluing into a great CD. A band that i didnt even know of. I got this CD for free from the Radio Station i work at and let me tell you freaking amazing. This CD just blew me away. I laughed i cried i got all emotional from it. My favorite song off of the CD has gotta be "Clue Me In." It is amazing. If MTV dont pick these guys up then i dont who will. These guys rock. And they have the potential to be up their with Blink-182 or Jimmy Eat World. One of t he best Emo CD's I own. For fans of Mid-Town, Juliana Theory, Yellow Card, and Jimmy Eat World. A must have CD for any Punk or Emo lover!

I got this CD for free a little skeptical cause i didnt know what it was. Well i get it home put it in my CD player and i hear this Emo/Punk band coming out of my speakers. Im like wow. I got this for free! It is so amazing. The songs are just full of great lyrics. The CD doesnt slow down either. It keeps the same pace throughout it. If you like Mid-town, Nerf Herder or Jimmy Eat World I suggest you get these guys. they just rock. I am now a fan and have to have every single one of their CD's. Talk about awesome music. I fell in love. The best tracks off of it are "S is For Susan," "Breakneck Speed," and "Clue Me In." I suggest everyone buy this CD!

What an unsung hero Hanson is. I have his recording of the 3rd with the Rochester group on the Mercury lable. Though it is conducted by Hanson, himself, the Telarc has the advantage of superior sound and surround. This is great classical music for a novice or a long time listener. You will not be dissapointed in this disc!

    I can't get past the reverb on Southern Harmony. I've played Southern Harmony several times, and even in the best of concert halls it has never sounded like that. It sounded like they were playing in a high school gym. It drove me nuts! Other than that, it's a good group. Way to go on recording good material!

    It is not easy to have a wind performance recording and it is one of them. I myself played the 'Festive Overture' and I recognised its technical difficulties but the band has obviously overcome it.

    I can also feel the surround sound from the CD when I was playing it in my Hi-fi. Nice performance & recording

    Album Description

    What you get with Dennis Jay is a troubadour of quiet conviction and a clear vision from years traveling in the American west. Memories pour out of the bottle and wanderlust sends him on the road in the song Tupelo Flash, where he is "blinded by west Texas sand, Jett Rink's ghost walking this land [and hears] the Tupelo Flash raising hell."

    Absorbing the influences of classic honky tonk, cowboy ballads, folk and flamenco, Dennis Jay has a driving rhythm guitar style to power his songs and a rich voice to sing them, which can swing from plaintive to joyful with a hint of a yodel. His songs offer reflections on travel and love, going from a lament of lost romance and time (Letters from Mexico), to a bar stool where "Yesterday's dreams, a home, and a wife, are moving out with the cold, hard facts of life" (What You See). Out of drifting and reflection, Dennis Jay's characters seem to find empathy and courage - "courage to love, courage to fear," where "each kiss is the magic of this"(Betrayal).

And he holds it with that hard guitar strum, and the accompanying single-string Telecaster and Precision Bass lines of his band. Their sound recalls the rhythmic syncopation of Johnny Cash's Tennessee Two, while fiddles, castanets, and marimba flavor the mix.
