melodic metal at it's best.......2006-01-20
This disc is for anyone that wants their melodic rock and now! The first track maggy is really great grabs a hold of you. Inside out has some very catchy guitar, but what keeps me loving you, and follow the night are top notch power ballads, with great guitar on them. Only way I can describe the sound is dokken like, which makes sense since don produced it. Pick this up yesterday and p.s. the 2nd album hungry is just as lethal!!
"I made it to the light to realize I'm too far gone".......2004-12-13
XYZ is the eponymous debut of the Hollywood-based metal band that was formed in 1985. Don Dokken produced this album and, like the band Dokken, XYZ plays straight forward, radio friendly 1980s metal, although their music is heavier than Dokken's. Released in 1989, XYZ is similar to briefly popular metal bands of the late 1980s like Winger, Hurricane, etc. Although the album is not spectacular, there is not anything weak on it either. Standout tracks include the single "Maggy" and the addictive "Tied Up." XYZ released a couple more albums after this one, but never achieved much fame. Their first album was released a little too late to capitalize on the 1980s hair metal scene which is unfortunate because they were better than a lot of bands that hit it big (however briefly) during that time. Still, XYZ is decent and solid and anyone who likes the aforementioned bands will like this album.
1 of the best u never heard.......2004-10-24
I bought this album to fill the empty x space in my alphabet of cd's. To my surprise, this was one of the best hair metal albums ever made. These guys are talented! Too bad nirvana killed the scene, or this band would have had several good albums. I own the 2nd one too (Stay Hungry), it's good, but not as good as this one. Great guitar works (bass and lead,) great singer, and a great drummer. When you see it used for over $20.00, you know it's gotta be somfin special.
THE BEST DOKKEN ALBUM EVER!.......2003-03-28
Between mid 1980's and early 1990's, Dokken released a few good albums. The albums "Tooth & Nail" and "Back For The Attack" had some killer riffs, excellent lead guitar playing and good song writing but neither nor any other Dokken album set my world on fire. But for some reason, I was pulled to listen to their music. I have no explanation other than to say it's possible I was hoping that one day they would deliver a knock out album. That never happened. However, I just happened to run across this album on the day it was released back in 1989 and saw that it was produced by Don Dokken so I made the purchase. I'll sum it up with this simple statement: This is the best album Dokken never made. George Lynch was an excellent guitarist (overrated in my opinion) but I found Marc Diglio's sound and style even more impressive. I could never really get used to Don Dokken's voice but Terry Ilous' lyrical renderings were more to my liking. The song writing is impressive which suggest that though this is their debut album, the band honed its chops writing and playing on the road. I still have this album after all of these years and it still floors me every time I take a listen. Every song has a different flavor. My personal favorites are "Maggie" for it's melodic simplicity and tasty guitar solo, the bluesy "Follow The Night", the sincerity of the ballad "What Keeps Me Loving You" and the surprisingly mean sounding "Take What You Can". Incidentally, I saw XYZ perform in a Washington DC club called The Bayou about 6 months after the release of this album and you talk about putting on a show! They were unbelievable. Vocalist Terry Ilous had great command both over his own voice and the crowd and Marc Diglio's guitar playing was even more impressive live. No ifs, ands or buts about it. The guy could flat out play. If melodic hard rock/metal is your forte, buy this album because it sit well along side of or may very well replace your favorite Dokken, Tora Tora or Danger Danger album.
Rock solid. Atrociously under-rated........2002-07-03
When I first heard this album, I thought, man this band rocks! Ballads or rockers, their music kickass! And the guitarist plays some mean guitar! Many said they sounded like Dokken (since Don Dokken was the producer) but to me, they sounded much better, they rock harder and their ballads are better too.
Too bad, they came out little too late, when the music scene is starting to be taken over by those 'grunge' bands ala nirvana. Thus, sadly, they never really got the recognition they deserved.

Customer Reviews:
XYZ rocks!!!.......2006-12-13
XYZ was a lesser known pop metal band that came along too late to cash in the 80's metal scene. This was XYZ's second album (1991) which is far better and more lethal than their first. There is no weak material on here and the production is great as well.It has some sizzling guitar riffs and great vocals. The best way to describe XYZ's sound is that it's just like Dokken, but in some ways better. If you like bands like Whitesnake,Slaughter,Skid Row,and of course,Dokken, then don't miss out on this one.Pick it up.You'll be glad you did.
XYZ should've made it big!!!!.......2006-03-01
XYZ delivers a classic metal ballad on this album with "When I Find Love" The harmonies, drums, and great guitar chops along with some brillant lyrics make this song a true metal classic in my opinion. I believe this song was very overlooked by radio and MTV at the time of the album's release; as XYZ comes along at the end of the 80s metal era just a bit too late to put them over the top.
This is an import disc, and I believe it was remastered by the import company. And I must say, they did a great job with the sound on this disc.
Xyz truly is hungry!.......2006-01-25
This is a terrific follow up to a first record! The guitars on this are lethal. Face down in the gutter comes on and kicks your ass, so does don't say no. My favorite one is When the night comes down. When I find love is a great ballad. HH boogie has a kind of blues thing going on in it. If you liked the first one, you will love this one, and this band after some time off has some new stuff out there now too, which I have heard some of it, and so far I think it's fairly decent. I tried to see this band about 3 times and it always got messed up can you believe it! But pick up hungry yesterday!
Outstanding, powerful hard rock.......2005-05-03
Man, I wish somebody still made this type of music! Yes, I agree with most reviewers that they have a heavy Dokken style, which is alright by me. Outstanding guitar! If you really dig Lynch Mob's "wicked sensation", then you would probably enjoy this disc as well. This is the stype of stuff that you just cannot listen to without pulling out the old air guitar.
Hungry for more from these guys!.......2002-01-31
These guys rock. Everything is covered here from the out and out rockers like Face Down In The Gutter and Sun Also Rises in Hell to the Bluesy sound of H.H. Boogie to the power ballad When I Find Love, this groups second album has it all. From awesome guitars to pounding drums and excellent vocals, this is a group that won't disappoint.

A Mainstream Record by Andy Summers.......2007-01-30
This is the one Andy Summers record that I have heard that it is not jazz. It is a fairly strong mainstream record, probably what we might have expected as a first endeavor after the Police.
While the record sounds great, Andy doesn't stretch himself vocally. He stays in a very limited range, which, I think, limits the attractiveness and effectiveness of this endeavor. His voice is not unpleasant and the listener is left with the impression that he could have created a much stronger recording by taking more chances.
Nice album .......2007-01-12
There isn't anything particularly phenomenal or adventurous about this album. However, it is quite good for pop music, and gives Summers a chance to show of his amazing fluency with "neutral" chords. Fans of the Police will recognize in this album a certain textural, minimalist philosophy that has been a hallmark of his since early on (no doubt greatly influenced by his work with Robert Fripp, e.g. "I Advance Masked"). While not the greatest singer, Summers' voice has an honest, real quality that is actually quite endearing.
As to the reviewer who states that the album could have been better had it not been for Summmers lack of enrolling a plethora of other musicians to contribute their instrumental skills because of his ego, this reviewer has completely missed the mark. The reason for some of the electronic accompaniment and so forth is was purely economical.
And Andy Summers is truly one of the most humble, self-effacing musicians I have ever had the pleasure to meet.
Andy sings!.......2006-10-26
I loved this CD for the simple reason that Andy sang. His only vocal solo effort. There are some very catchy tunes on here, and some excellent guitar work. I saw him tour to support this CD and most of the songs on XYZ translated quite well to a live setting. To compare this CD to The Police denies Andy an identity. The songs on XYZ could be Police tracks I suppose, but they're not. Part of The Police's power was the individual strengths each member brought to that group. This release showed the world, maybe for the first time, that Andy is a terrific song writer.
Perfect Marriage of Moody Music and Vocals.......2005-04-04
Sure, Andy Summers is no Sting when it comes to vocals. However for the songs he's written his voice fits well. If you're looking for the album to sound like a Police album you will be disappointed. With the exception of one track, "Nowhere", this doesn't resemble the Police. But what Summers has created here is some very intriging pop/rock music with an "artsy" flair. I wished he'd not abandoned vocals altogether after this album. This stands as his only vocal solo album.

Album Description
XYZ let's loose a power-driven rock record that bristles with genuine, raw emotions, on an unsuspecting public, with new their release "LETTER to GOD." This long-awaited album was produced by XYZ singer Terry Ilous, new XYZ guitar player, J.K. Northrup and mixed by Tom Fletcher (SCORPIONS, YES & TOTO). "It is great to be back, playing and writing," exclaims Terry Ilous. "The album will have 3 bonus tracks when purchased off our site." The album also features two remakes of previous XYZ hits "Inside Out" and "What Keeps Me Loving You."
Drawing from the past and present, Terry Ilous and original guitarist Mark Diglio co-write several of the songs. The inspiration of this album is partly attributed to singer Terry Ilous' son. The song "Letter to God" was the last one they wrote for the CD, after the tragedy of Terry's son dying late last year.
Album Description
U.S. edition of the L.A. 80s hair metal band's long awaited 2003 album includes three bonus tracks, 'Well', 'Never Too Late', & 'Tango' (Spanish Version). FYCO.

GREAT COMEBACK WITH A MATURE SOUND..........2004-10-26
Whoever that Bruce Forrest guy is who reviewed this needs to open his ears - he obviously is clueless about music (he must work for Rolling Stone or Allmusic). Since i did a few gigs as keyboardist for XYZ i was excited to be a part of this very mature album from my buddy Terry and friends. I really didn't know what to expect when i first got the cd , but i have to admit i was pleasantly surprised. Great hooks , top-notch musicianship and just a nice evolving mature sound. No grunge crap (butt-rock) or alternative elements here , but not full-on 80s glory either. It's a bit more Zeppelin-esque i'd say. Terry sounds great as always and the band is just smokin. A fine addition to your Melodic Hard Rock collection.
great cd.......2003-08-09
this is a great come back cd
i m glad i bought it
it still is 80 s rock but with a more mature sound
love that voice
please keep up the good work

GIVE XYZ A CHANCE!.......2003-07-11
This is the third release of XYZ. A very underrated band on the now defunct Enigma label, now featuring veteran JK Northrup (Paul Shortino, King Kobra, Cage) on guitars.
If you were into this guys before, do not expect the same sounds! These guys really play their hearts out in this one, giving the songs a melodic 80's sound but at the same time a modern dark feeling to the songs. Think Dokken's (underrated) Dysfunctional, but with gutsier vocals and harder drumming. They even include great new versions of the singles of their self titled debut: "Inside Out" and "What Keeps Me loving You".
If you are willing to give a couple of spins to the cd before critizicing, then give it a try. I did and I do not repent! If you expect to digest it immediately or if you are expecting a copy of the albums on Enigma, then forget it!!!
XYZ-"Letter to God" Review.......2003-07-08
XYZ/ "Letter to God" XYZ was one of a multitude of 80's bands that were basically handed a recording contract, in a mad signing frenzy by record execs attempting to find "The Next Big Thing." Some of these bands survived for a reasonable duration, while others, such as XYZ, fizzled faster than a firework dud. Fast forward to 2003. Now two of the former members, obviously tired of working fast food joints, decide to regroup, as if anyone even cares, and release, "Letter to God." With easily, one of the most irritating voices in rock, "singer" Terry Ilhous whails off some of the worst written lyrics, this side of Mr. Rogers. Warning: The cliches don't stop here. Backed by former Quiet Riot-bassist Sean McNabb's mundane bass lines, new guitarist JK Northrup demonstrates a barely-passable display of "Guitar Playing For Dummies," with riffs that were already played to death 20 years ago. Drummer Paul Monroe does little to appease the pain, whatsoever. There's not a single song on here I could recommend, without repeating myself: this collection of unlistenable songs would not have worked in the 80's, never mind today. Nice try guys, but there's a car awaiting you in the drive-thru.

I just bought this cd and what a big disapointment. Save your money & buy the first & second cd they put out. They are GREAT.This one does'nt sound nothing like the first two

Customer Reviews:
Great album and some comments to reviews below.......2005-01-22
First of all, the RELEASE of this album is French - that is what the album description above says. (This album is from Axe Killer, which is indeed a French company.) The album description above does not say that the band members are French. That said, if you read the liner notes included with CD, it clearly states the vocalist and the bassist are indeed French. The drummer and guitarist on the live portion of this CD are Americans.
On to the CD itself. If you enjoy polished American hard rock from the late '80's or early '90's, you should definitely check out XYZ. This live document seems to be a fair representation of them. The performance is quite good and the audio quality is also quite listenable. I get the feeling that only part of the set is presented, given that the rest of the disc is filled out with their original demo material. (Which, again, feature a different drummer and guitarist.) The demo material is a far cry in quality from what XYZ would produce on their two studio albums and this disc.
Overall, I really like the disc - it is what it is: a fun hard rock show. And I give a real "tip of the hat" to Marc Richard Diglio. He is really a great guitarist and I don't think he got enough credit for his musicianship.
L.A. Based, not Danish.......2003-03-31
I also met these guys several times, they do not have Danish accents. The singer had a French accent, the other three were American.
I love the XYZ studio albums, but I'm not a big fan of live CDs. This one is as good as can be expected.
Awesome.......2001-06-25
GREAT band. Fun live. CD captures this.
Album description is wrong - they are from Denmark. Met them a few times and they have THICK Danish accents. Not from L.A. (probably why they are so good)
Good Buy for an XYZ Fan.......1999-04-08
All around good CD. Too bad the other XYZ titles are not available
FUN.......1999-02-08
This CD took me back to when I saw XYZ live. There's no fancy stuff here, just straight-ahead rock and roll, feedback and mistakes included. Don't miss this one, especially if you're a fan of late 80s-early 90s hard rock/heavy metal. Good rockers, good power ballads (and for the XYZ collector, four bonus tracks that were the EP that made it into Don Dokken's hands--cheesy, but fun!)
Gotta love it.

simply fantastic.......2005-07-03
I have been a fan of rock music since 1988 when i first heard Def Leppard and since then i have got an extensive collection which includes both XYZ releases. The first cd which is self titled is a very good effort easily bettering some of todays bands but with the album Hungry they took it a step further and rocked it up some more kicking off with the hard hitting Face Down In The Gutter. The 3rd song Fire And Water is a cover version which i believe they really did justice to. The rest of the cd never lets up with song after song of pure 80's/90's feel good hard rock that pounds the senses, great vocals fantastic guitars and a rhythm section that delivers a sturdy base from start to finish. If you want something from the past to show you how it should be done then i highly recommend you buy this cd and you should also get their first aswell.
80's Metal At Its Best!!.......2004-09-08
These guys are by far a much better band than any of the other "popular" bands of the 80's/90's: Motley Crue, Slaughter, Kix, Tesla, et al, except for maybe Def Leppard and Dokken. These guys should have gotten way more popular than a lot of those other bands that did. Glad I "rediscovered" them.
