Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24
For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.
We really enjoyed hearing all of the old movie themes.......2005-09-30
we put this CD in on a long road trip. We played a guessing game as to which one knew the movie. The music was excellent.
Outstanding Film Music.......2005-09-10
This is an outstanding collection of film music. The sound is qulity is very good. The selections cover a good range from various film genres and time periods. I like this CD.
An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 1.......2005-08-22
Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' interpretation of film scores on this first tribute to Hollywood is somewhat a mixed bag. A SUMMER PLACE was beautifully executed and true to the nature of this sensitive film that was made during a time of innocence. The BEN HUR, CAPTAIN BLOOD and OUT OF AFRICA selections were good. The interpretation of GOLDFINGER was a rather bizarre and blatantly bombastic exercise in overkill. This is a good CD for me because of the A SUMMER PLACE selection.
Fantastic collection of movie music.......2001-02-13
Erich Kunzel and The Cincinnati Pops never fail to disappoint. This is a rousing stirring collection of overtures and themes from some of Hollywood's biggest films. And what better piece to start off the album than the "20th Century Fox Fanfare". A lot, if not all, of these pieces will be familiar to movie lovers. Who can resist the beautiful "Love Theme from Romeo & Juliet" or the "Theme from Love Story". Then there's the heart pumping "Theme from Jaws" and the "Theme from Rocky". This is a terrific album, and belongs, not just in a music fans collection, but also a movie lovers.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Customer Reviews:
A Masterpiece.......2007-06-20
Clear and crisp and played with vigor and heart. Mass call is of course Mess Call that someone spelled wrong. What worked for me is that I review four or five calls each night before bed. I hum them first and then listen to the call on the CD. The next day, I work out on the bugle until lip fatigue sets in.
Clear and simple.......2006-08-04
Single bugle calls, clear and simple-recognizable to this Navy/Marine Corps veteran. Also some army stuff if you desire that sort of thing. Quite a lot of quality stuff.

Get out your parachute pants........2006-08-21
I did not listen to this with the expectation that it would sound like Kansas. I simply expected to enjoy it on some level.
NOT SO! I found myself rather embarrassed by the childish lyrics and the overwhelming cheesy 80's sound. It's just silly.
If I had a time machine, and could go back to an earlier decade to hear some good music, I would skip the 80's. Of course if your sporting a mullet and enjoy Budweiser and like Winger, you can't go wrong here. Sorry Billy, nothing personal.
BILLY DON'T BE A HERO !.......2005-04-25
RAGING 80'S REHASH.....GET BACK WITH KANSAS AND WRITE SOME NEW MUSIC....PLEASE MAKE IT BE GREAT LIKE POWER, SPIRIT OF THINGS, AND FREAKS OF NATURE AND WHILE YOUR AT IT THROW IN A LITTLE OF SOMEWHERE TO ELSEWHERE SPIRIT....FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT TO DANGLE WITH THE HAIR BAND INFLUENCED MUSIC THIS ALBUM IS IT...THOSE WHO EXPECT PROGRESSIVE MIGHT CRY AFTER HEARING THESE HAIRY TUNES.
Higher expectation than I thought...........2004-07-03
Well, when an artist releases a debut album, he wants to introduce his "Sound", then, the second one is to set what he has been done and make it better, not in this case, I felt a little disappointed (just a little...)in this The Raging Fire, less "rest-songs", less invited guests, less inspired melodies, the best ones are The Sun Will Rise and the hit Always From the Heart, the first one is still a "Classic", if you like it, you can also get "Power from Kansas", which is costing a budget around, if you wanna have this Raging Fire, go for US edition, which comes with an extra song, I bought the imported and missed it....(but I'll buy the US Ed. later, when the price falls down down down...eh-eh-eh...)
FINALLY, GREAT 80'S STYLE HARD ROCK.......2004-06-10
I listen to alot of music, new and old, and there are very few newer releases that I really get excited about and love. I LOVE this cd. This is what melodic hard rock is all about!! Sure, there a few less than brilliant songs here, but the majority of the songs are very well written, well played, well sung, and rock hard! Man, I love this cd. Forget that Billy played for Kansas. This is not Kansas (although I love Kansas). This is great rock and roll with a good mix of guitar, keys and great musicianship. Get it!!
The Raging Fire is Raging Hot!.......2004-05-20
Since the first cd was so good,(4.5 stars), and after reading some negative reviews, I thought I might be dissapointed in this one. Hardly the case. This is a good cd. Contrary to other opinions, I think it gets better as it goes. The first two songs seem to be transitions from the first cd, then it really gets interesting, with taste of Ozzie, Def Leppard, and White Snake. The songs, It Should Have Been You and Winds of War are classic. Winds of War sounds like it could be a Kansas song. The bonus track, though a good song, is just that, as it does not mix well with the other songs. Overall, the songs on this cd are better than the first cd minus the all-star musicians, though the musicians here are great especially Mike Slammer. 4.5 stars

One of the BEST LIVE albums for about 5 years!.......2006-01-12
This album's simply amazing. RPWL started as a Pink Floyd coverband. It's not difficult to hear that, but the band has managed to make their own style.
Sure - it sounds a bit like a clone between Pink Floyd, Genesis & Porcupine tree, but anyway: CHECK THIS OUT!
Their 4 studio albums are also of very high quality, and well worth listening to. 5 STARS, no doubt! :-)
Woefully Bland.......2005-12-06
In my review of "Trying To Kiss The Sun," also by RPWL, I said that this is a very average band. I was hoping they would be better live, but I was disappointed. The music is good. They even show signs of some instrumental prowess in songs like "The Gentle Art of Swimming," but they are held back from being a good band by their singer. Yogi Lang can be described in one word: "blah." He just doesn't have whatever it is that makes front men riveting, interesting, or even curious. His voice is often buried beneath the music, and, when you can hear it, just plain weak. He's always struggling to stay on pitch, and is just plain flat in many place on this album. Besides that, the vocal lines he writes are boring. You think there might be a hook coming soon, be he then lets you down with some awkwardly-phrased lyric that makes you wonder how the man can have absolutely no sense of rhythm. It's pretty sad that, by far, RPWL's best song is "Roses," and it's sung by a guy, Ray Wilson, who's not even in the band. Ray Wilson is a singer. Yogi Lang is, at best, a "vocalist." Stick to real prog and real singers: Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Spock's Beard.
GET-R-DUN.......2005-11-15
ONCE AGAIN THESE GUYS ARE GETN-R-DUN.JUST GO OUT AND BUY THE CD.ITS RPWL,WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?..........
Outstanding Live Performance.......2005-10-30
I am happy to be the first to say that no RPWL fan will be disappointed with this double live CD and the Bonus Track of New Stars Are Born ( full studio version )......I am now giving my first listen and I am half way through Disc 2 and I can't say enough of the precise crisp and extremely well mixed live performances by lead singer Yogi Lang. His vocals sound as good or better than on studio albums.......You can't go wrong by buying this.......you too will soon be spreading the word.....

Album Description
Boy Sets Fire's first full-length was an instant hardcore classic and has since gone on to become a genre-defining record that helped pave the way for the popularity of bands like Poison The Well and Thursday. Emotionally charged, heartfelt and honest, Boy Sets Fire mix aggression and thought-provoking ideas into a positive blend of melody and abrasive music. 2003 release from Initial Records.

One shining moment for 90's hardcore........2004-08-30
This Album along with Falling Forward's "Hand Me Down" and Endpoint's "Catharsis" helped define just what midwestern emotional hardcore was. These bands all helped introduce hardcore kids to "emo" and "emo" kids to hardcore. They crossed barriers and struck a new level of intensity never before reached in hardcore. I remember in 1998 when I first heard these bands. Before I had only listened to youth of today, minor threat, chain of strength, etc. and when I heard these bands I knew they were the real deal. Don't evenm consider calling yourself a fan of 90's hardcore (or even hardcore in general) unless you own these albums!!!
Pure Intensity.......2003-10-26
I first heard about BSF when my friend told me about them. Something about this band just struck a chord with me, it was the pure intensity in Nathan's voice. BSF is one of those bands that when you hear them you know they mean it. One of my favorite songs off this cd are "Another Badge of Courage" and "The Fine Art of Falling". These tracks are a great example of the passionate songwriting that BSF became known for. I know BSF is a politically-charged band, and i dont really agree with some of their lyrics, but its the near ballad songs that get me. This is the best BSF cd by far. I'm not dissing their other albums, but The Day the Sun Went Out is a true and honest effort.

Album Description
Electronic music is selling more than ever with new releases by the Chemical Brothers, Boards Of Canada, Clinic & a recent release by Crystal Method- Asphalt Jungle's debut release "Electro Ave." could not have come at a better time. It combines the writing & producing talents of Brian Tarquin (3 solo albums on Instinct Records) & Chris Ingram and incorporates funky big beats with metallic percussive guitar riffs. "Electro Ave." features
MTV's "Road Rules" hit track "Witchcraft" and a re-mixed bonus version by DJ Soul Slinger & DJ Wally. It also includes "Tinsel Town" which has been heard by millions of
"Making The Band" viewers. With their own unique style, Asphalt Jungle has blended live raw guitar tones with fast paced bottomless grooves.
Long time partners, Tarquin & Ingram have written the music for MTV's 1998/1999 television show "Road Rules," as well as producing music for many other TV shows including the "X-Files" and ABC's "Making The Band". The duo also has a long history in recording and producing albums together. Inspired by the early 90's London Acid Jazz & British Electronica Revolution, Tarquin & Ingram scored a top 20 hit (Billboard) with, "This Is Acid Jazz; The Best Of Acid Jazz Vol. 2" on Instinct Records. Asphalt Jungle's first ! release is a culmination of experience & desire; both Chris & Brian relish the opportunity to have `their' music finally heard- so listen up!

Asphalt Jungle Kicks Booty.......2002-07-24
Loved the album from start to finish. The mixer of rock guitar with electronica dance grooves kicks ass!! I especially liked the dreamly electronica tune, Distant Heart, the quirky dance track, Wha Da Ding and high energy sultry track, Foxxy. A great CD to ROCK OUT with!! A CD that has won a place in my car cd changer. Hope you guys keep making music!!!!!
Over the top!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-07-12
This album should have been the soudtrack to that armwrestling movie called "over the top" because it gets you PUMPED UP! Arm- breaking beats mixed with tendon-rippin' metal guitar riffs. It's hot I tell you. If you ever liked anything Crystal Method did or the Chemical Bros. buy this and prepare to be impressed, because it's more intense than anything those guys ever did.
