Rosie Thomas has a delicate, weird little voice and it's never really been the forefront of her music until now. The preteen Joni Mitchell/ choirgirl strains of her vocal tones are something to be played up, not down; thankfully she's finally realized that on her Nettwerk debut and fourth solo album. The album also includes studio patter tacked onto the beginning or ending of the songs, awesome little snippets of Rosie's famous comedic wit. Such material works in the album's favor, grounding the material by showing that Thomas is not some precious freak-folker. It also gives a glimpse of her live performances, where Rosie sometimes performs as a neurotic woman in a neck brace hopelessly in love with Leo DiCaprio named Sheila (really). The record's title likely refers to the batch of famous friends who act as accompanying musicians throughout. Thomas's core of musical compatriots in vaguely Christian dreamy emo folk-rock is here expanded from Pacific Northwesterners Damien Jurado, David Bazan, and Jeremy Enigk to include New Yorker Sufjan Stevens. Sufjan and Rosie duet beautifully and breathlessly on their cover of R.E.M.'s "The One I Love." This sparse and Beatle-length album (ten songs, just over half an hour) is her strongest by far. Huzzah! --Mike McGonigal

This is one of my favorite cds. I LOVE Rosie Thomas! The Kite Song is wonderful - the lyrics are touching and the music beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful ..........2007-05-25

Bought on a whim, this CD has turned out to be a real treasure. Soft, lyrical and really comforting music. I'm lovin' it. The infectious giggling with her pals on one song has you enjoying it almost as much as they obviously enjoyed making it.

4 out of 5 stars Rosie.......2007-05-07

Rosie Thomas is one of my favorite singers. I found her by "accident" over a year ago and have all her music. While this CD is great, it is not my favorite. It lacks some of the wistfulness that has made her music so unique. However, having said that, it is still sweet, silly, and magical and still at times, wistful. I would recommend this to any of her fans.

5 out of 5 stars love it...love her.......2007-04-10

I bought this cd as a surprise to myself, as I had never heard of Rosie Thomas... AND I love her! The cd is beautiful, relaxing and even humorous at times. Super creative and FUN!

I walked into a record store in Oslo, Norway on Monday and the guy behind the counter had just put "These Friends of Mine" on. My Norwegian husband, my teenaged son and I were all dumbstruck - what was this magic floating out of the speakers? We hung around the shop and listened to the first three songs - each one better than the last - before buying the CD. Our only multi-generational regret: "These Friends of Mine" lasts only 33 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Donnie Darko.......2007-07-03

I was drawn to buy this CD because of hearing Michael's arrangement and Gary Jules rendition of "Mad World" which was originally recorded by Tears for Fears way back when. I glad I did. The music was written as the underscore for a Science Fiction movie by the same name and now I really want to see this film. The music is other worldly, ethereal and strange in a good way!

2 out of 5 stars just wanted "mad world".......2007-01-09

loved the mad world track from the Gears of War video game. was hoping the rest of the album was as cool, but it is all instrumentals. a little disappointing, i must admit.

Gary Jules' remake of this great past favorite (Mad World) is superb! The accompanying tracks on this album are not my style, but I didn't buy this for the other tracks. For that I feel this score is quite impressive.

2 out of 5 stars Liked only one cut.......2007-01-04

I bought this CD for the song "Mad World". Unfortunately it was the only one I liked, but I've spent more money on dumber things.

4 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and all-around cool........2006-06-05

Michael Andrews is one of today's best composers. His score for the little-known sci-fi flick "Cypher" was brilliant, and although his music in Donnie Darko is never quite as good (after all, DD was one of his first real scoring jobs), it is a somber, weird, sometimes beautiful album.
Andrews uses many bizarre non-musical instruments and female vocals to great effect, and creates an ambient, sad world that works regardless of your having seen the film.
His song "Mad World" is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
The disk isn't very long--just a little over thirty-seven minutes as I recall. But definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars So much fun!.......2007-06-13

This is still such a classic and so much fun!

5 out of 5 stars BYE BYE BIRDIE.......2007-03-03

I always enjoyed the film version of "Birdie" as well as the soundtrack and now this reissue includes "The Sultans Ballet" where Janet Leigh bites off more than she can chew when she invites a group of Sultans(Shriners) to dance. There are a couple of minor inclusions including "We Love You Conrad" and the rehearsal of "One Last Kiss" My only question is why didnt they use the complete version of "A Lot of Livin To Do" Even with the additional tracks the CD clocks in at 46 minutes so space wasn't a problem. It's quite understandable why the Russian Ballet was not included since it would be out of place on an otherwise perky and bright score.

While "Bye Bye Birdie" may not be one of the best scores it is zesty and cheerful to listen to on a gloomy day and as one of the numbers suggests it helps you to "Put On A Happy Face"

4 out of 5 stars Bye Bye Birdie soundtrack.......2006-07-01

The product itself is excellent, but: 1) it took about three weeks to arrive; and 2) we didn't realize the film cut out and added so music. What we needed was a soundtrack for the stage production.

4 out of 5 stars Love the movie...but the soundtrack?.......2006-05-04

I am a huge fan of the movie and the soundtrack is also amazing...the only thing I'm uspet about is that "One Last Kiss" on the cd is TOTALLY different!

4 out of 5 stars Bye Bye Birdie was a good Buy Buy.......2005-08-02

Solid cast recording brings back the light-hearted msuicals of the 50s and 60s. Used as the primer for an upcoming stage version of the show, we listened frequently, and haven't tired yet.

Only With Laughter Can You Win, Rosie's second full-length, elaborates on the quietly affecting intensity of her critically lauded debut. On it, she ads considerable emotional and instrumental depth with performances by family members and friends (including Iron & Wine's Sam Beam).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Relax and enjoy.......2007-04-15

After reading one of the reviews below and subsequently buying the CD, I set out to find those horribly offending religious verses. My conclusion? The music is not religiously offensive unless you truly want to find such offense. I am not 100% positive, but I think God was mentioned twice and Christ was mentioned once. Sadly, many people curse in average conversations using His name irreverently more than that, which is where the true offense exists. So anyway, what about this music?

Overall the CD was good but not spectacular. Rosie's voice is one of those throaty, intentionally breaking on certain notes, yet kind of wispy and wandering new-age type of voices that for some of the songs left me straining to listen so that I might catch more of the words. I personally prefer singers whose every word I can understand, unless it is someone like Emma Shapplin (Re. "Carmine Meo" CD...superb). I had a couple favorites on the "Only with Laughter" CD, and overall it is easy to listen to, but I had hoped for more songs like the couple that came pre-loaded on my new HP laptop (which is why I chased down the CD in the first place). I'll stretch it from 3 to 4 stars, realizing that some listeners will really like her style and music.

However, unless you are fairly sure that you will like her music I would avoid buying the companion CD that is offered: "When We Were Small." In spite of some distracting additions of irrelevant chatter to try to give you the feeling that you are sitting in her living room with friends, I did like the first song on it (this one song had just a little light country western flavor and was very well done), but the other songs all started to sound the same, which in some ways is the same criticism that I could offer for the first album. Nevertheless, if this is the flavor that you like in abundance, then you'll really like her music.

Just a suggestion, if you are leaning to Rosie's CDs, you also might want to give a listen to Eva Cassidy (Re. "Songbird"). I think Amazon allows you to listen to a sample. Eva is gone now--taken at an early age due to cancer, but her singing has something very special about it. I can say with full confidence that if you like Rosie Thomas that you will also like Eva Cassidy. I took four of Rosie's songs from two CDs and four of Eva's songs from one CD to put together a great CD for quality listening.

5 out of 5 stars Nice find!.......2007-01-11

I stumbled on this artist while playing around in iTunes and purchased the CD from Amazon. Rosie has a sound very similar to Sarah McGlaughlin, very soothing. Highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful record but...........2006-07-19

This is a beautiful sounding recording. But some of the content turns off those who don't believe in folklore and fairytales. Don't get me wrong, that has a place in "atmospheric music." But those who take it literally are viewed by rational people as a bit insane, at best.

To the Reggie Dobalina's of the reviewers who actually have the gall, and naivete to mention "Satan" to those who don't buy into superstition, I'm sorry, but leave the fairytales and mythology to those less talented, and insane.

Rosie Thomas has the talent to be a major talent. I hope she decides to use it.

4 out of 5 stars Rosie Thomas .......2005-09-07

This CD is absolutely beautiful. I only bought it because I heard one of the songs was played in the background of Alias, but it was definitely worth it. The music is relaxing, and she has a beautiful voice.

2 out of 5 stars talent but missing content.......2005-08-22

She has a great voice and her sound in general is amazing. But, there just isn't much going on here. She's very young and that probably has a lot to do with it. She is quite expressive about her religion in a way that is distancing. I like many other artists who write from a place of spirituality like Innocence Mission, Van Morrison, etc. This seems fundamentalist and loses me rather than inspiring me. Many of her themes strike me as adolescent and pretty much played out by so many other people. I have great hopes for her in about 10 years.

Rosie Thomas's voice is strong, with a folky quiver and, when not backed by a steady, resourceful band, she accompanies herself on acoustic guitar and a piano so deep and resonant it recalls the purposefully homespun work of Victoria Williams . Yet despite its nostalgic bent, When We Were Small is far from twee. "Farewell" opens with the family happily chatting back in 1980, chirpy little Rosie's voice ringing out, then slides into a pained lament about her parents' eventual divorce. "Wedding Day" sees Rosie seeking a life as joyful as the first day of a marriage turned sour. "I'm gonna be carefree," she ends, "and let nothing pass me by/ Never ever again." "I Run" comes across like a sorrowful yet angry Tori Amos. Heavily marked by fear of abandonment, yet romantic and hopeful still, this is an unexpectedly beautiful piece. --Dominic Wills

Album Description

This is Rosie's first long player. Ten songs, focused on vivid childhood memories and images from the perspective of a young girl in the process of growing up, dealing with complex emotions. Peppered with audio samples from her childhood, the record spotlights Rosie's striking voice, which rings out wonderfully in the spirit of Joni Mitchell. When We Were Small is Rosie Thomas' debut full-length and on it she sings, plays guitar and piano.

1 out of 5 stars Girl with a guitar, so what?.......2005-01-19

Is it art? Or is it art school?

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful.......2005-01-07

I came across this artist and this album when I was searching through the musical selections of other Amazon buyers who had purchased some of my other favorites. I'm so glad I did. This album is just hypnotic. I think it would appeal to diverse tastes ranging from fans of Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan to Alison Krauss, Chantal Kreviazuk and Jewel. Rosie has a pure and beautiful voice that can both uplift you and break your heart. My favorite song on this album is "Farewell", perhaps because I just went through a breakup and the simplicity of the song and emotion-laden lyrics take your breath away. My other favorite is "Bicycle Tricycle", a song that appeals to every woman who sometimes aches for the simpler times of childhood, particularly when you've just been hurt. The way that Rosie interjects faint recordings of childhood dialog into her music only add to the beauty of her songs. I would highly recommend this album to anyone looking for a serene escape that will make you smile and, yes, cry...but that's not always a bad thing.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-07-09

First CD that's brought tears to my eyes in quite some time. Simply raw with emotion, this is a beautiful album.

5 out of 5 stars Rosie rocks!.......2003-07-18

I bought this album immediately after seeing Rosie in concert. She was the support act for Jewel, and I was just blown away when I heard her voice. This album does not fail to disappoint - Rosie has an amazing voice. The album has an acoustic feel to it - it's simplicity is part of the reason it is so good. Her lyrics are soulful and melodious - ranging from the upbeat "Two dollar shoes", to the beautifully sung "October". I just love this album - I'm sure you will too!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Uplifting, Fullfilling.......2003-05-11

Rosie Thomas has exceptional talent for creating beautiful lyrics and melodies. She has a rare gift and her songs have universal appeal. Some of the pieces on this CD surely will become "Classics" covered by other performers, "Have You Seen My Love" for example. Rosie's own vocal interpretations are unique and lend so much enjoyable emotion to her songs. She slides beautifully in and out of falsetto on individual syllables of a single word in a way that is thrilling to hear, and her own instrumental accompaniments lend such depth of feeling. Listen for her unusual phrasing where she breaks a line of lyrics on an unexpected word as in "Farewell" where she sings "Farewell so long and..." . This adds interest and texture, and makes the song more a dialogue coming straight from her heart. "When We Were Small" has the thread of a story through it like the soundtrack from a appealing and long-running Broadway musical that leaves people singing the songs to themselves and feeling better about everything. Maybe that is where young Rosie's exceptional talent will take her. I love this recording, so what ever she does, let's hear more.

Album Description

On her third Sub Pop full-length, this Seattle songwriter/vocalist approaches the sometimes difficult but universal topics of introspection, identity, and love with bravery, honesty, and above all, stunning beauty. "If Songs..." marks the first time she's collaborated with musicians outside her circle of family and friends, this time working with Liz Phair guitarist Dino Meneghin, accomplished film soundtrack string arranger Josh Myers, and a duet with Ed Harcourt on the classic "Let It Be Me".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finding a gem!.......2007-05-12

This little known talent from Seattle needs to be heard. She has her own unique sound while reminding you at various points of other singers you know and love. There are Joni Mitchell moments, Bonnie Rait moments, and even Tracy Chapman moments. But more importanly, there are tons of Rosie Thomas moments. And if her sound is not enough, check out the fine lyrics she is able to pen. This solid type of song writting has been ingognito for far too long. With just the right production support, the sonics of this project are just spot on. I love music and this album reminds me way. Don't let this one pass you by. With just a few listens, you will become a fan just as I have!

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful.......2006-07-04

I first heard Rosie's music on Grey's Anatomy earlier this year. I was captured by her voice, which was soft and beautiful, but achingly sad. Every time I play the CD I am reminded why I bought it in the first place. The songs speak of relationships and heartache and joy. It's a peaceful album, with lyrics that will make you think. Enjoy it when you have time to reflect and listen to what she has to say. I'd rate it one of my top picks of the year and I look forward to more of her music.

3 out of 5 stars If albums could be held together better...........2006-05-27

On a road trip recently, a friend and I were listening to one of those music magazine compilations covering the best of that months new music. Most of it was pleasant, in a forgettable sort of way, until about track 9 when something altogether different and quite splendid suddenly burst forth from the car stereo speakers. Scrambling for the CD case I soon discovered that the artist was Rosie Thomas and the song 'Pretty Dress'. No sooner had I heard that, then I wanted to hear everything by this enchanting sounding singer-songwriter, and this curiosity led me to track down Rosie Thomas' latest release If Songs Could Be Held.

If you hadn't already guessed from the album title, Rosie Thomas is a sensitive soul, one who crafts literate, introspective songs of delicate beauty. These qualities are exemplified by album opener 'Since You've Been Around', a winsome ballad that captures well the flood of muddled emotions you get from being attracted to someone new on the scene. Next comes the aforementioned 'Pretty Dress' and not only was it immediately arresting 3 months ago, it remains captivating to me now. After the wonderful lead-in of 'Since You've Been Around' and then the melodic jolt of 'Pretty Dress' it's slightly dissappointing to find that nothing on the remainder of the record comes close to being as catchy or upbeat. It all becomes a bit one-paced, with one wistful ballad after another, leaving this particular listener yearning for something a little more rousing or left-field. Taken by themselves, each of these songs are actually quite pretty, but lumped in together they all seem to blend.

Focusing on the positives though, what tracks 1 and 2 clearly illustrate, is that Rosie Thomas has all the capabilities as a songwriter to be more than just a mid-pack player. Definitely an artist to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly beautiful.......2006-02-28

I first came across Rosie Thomas while watching an episode of Alias. I bought one of her CDs and fell completely in love. She captures so much inside song, and doesn't hold back. This new album is worth the buy.

5 out of 5 stars Let It Be.......2006-02-01

Svaka pesma sa ovog albuma je pesma za sebe, zato dozvolite ovom albumu prostor u vasoj kolekciji, If Songs Could Be Held to zasluzuje!

I loved the song "A New Day" after hearing it on the radio. I tracked it down and ordered the CD. All the songs are terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Along with the Good Vibrations are my favorites.......2007-05-15

Own it! It's all worth it!
"You are the new day" is my personal favorite song.

4 out of 5 stars My dad loves it.......2007-02-13

If he likes it then I am happy. Not my cup of tea. I like the idea that there where some Beatles tunes. Dad is 57 I am 36 might be the difference in age. NOt sure. Just not my cup of tea

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2006-04-22

I was very amazed when I first heard this album. Their sound is like no other. They are so unique that you can't compare them to other acapella groups.

I can say that their sound is better than a mixed choir because even though the King's Singers is only composed of 6 members. Their sound volume can beat a 30 member choir due to the quality of their voice.

My favorite is "It Was Almost Like A Song" because of the countertenor's very light voice. The baritone part was also awesome as he dominated the scene when he took the melody.

Overall, great album. This has to be one of the King's Singers best albums released. All songs are great that you can't resist missing a moment on listening it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful singing; clever arrangements.......2002-06-14

I have been a fan of The King's Singers since their debut recording thirty years ago. New Day is one of my favourite albums. It has the terrific optimistic song "New Day," but many other wonderful tracks.

"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."

The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.

Highly recommended.

As befits a release on a fledgling indie label, Dualtone's tribute to Johnny Cash celebrates the feistier fringes of the Man in Black's catalog, adding a few mainstream milestones. In what is plainly a labor of love for all concerned, highlights extend from the pop innocence of "Ballad of a Teenage Queen" by Rodney Crowell (formerly married to Johnny's daughter Rosanne) to the folkier strains and husband-and-wife harmonies of "Pack Up Your Sorrows" by Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis to the honky-tonk majesty of "I Still Miss Someone" by pianist Earl Poole Ball. Some of the more familiar touchstones don't fare quite as well, with Billy Burnette turning in a tepid "Ring of Fire" and Dale Watson singing in a lower than comfortable register on "I Walk the Line," though James Intveld rises to the challenge of "Folsom Prison Blues." The house band and the largely acoustic arrangements give the 18-cut album more unity than many such projects, as the collection shows why one of the most influential and commercially successful artists in country's history remains an icon of alt-country as well. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars dressed in black-j.cash tribute.......2007-05-27

not many tribute albums are worth a 2nd listen, not the case here however with the likes of hank III & rev.horton heat you can listen to this one over & over with out hearing a generic pop country artist murder a cash classic, most of the songs here are done quite well, some just stand out more than others,a must have for cash fans!

5 out of 5 stars The best tribute (so far).......2006-05-09

The whole spirit of this CD takes me back to my teenage years in the late '50s, when we listened to Johnny Cash's Sun singles (along with Jerry Lee Lewis and Bill Haley) on the juke box. In addition to the excellent renditions of Cash's music, this collection introduced me to a few excellent singers who had somehow managed to slip by under my radar. In particular, I love Robbie Fulks' version of "Cry, Cry, Cry"--what a fantastic singer/songwriter! Surprisingly, the singer who sounds most like a young Cash (without seeming to imitate him) is the very Reverend Horton Heat on "Get Rhythm." Another is Chuck Mead's "There You Go." Hank III gives his own unique take on "Wreck of the Old '97." Sounding more like his own grandfather, it's certainly not the way Johnny Cash did it, but he nevertheless captures the bare tragedy and heroic spirit of the song. "Pack up Your Sorrows" was a favorite during the '60s, but I barely remember Johnny Cash singing it. The most familiar version was by Richard & Mimi Farina, and Kelly Willis and Bruce Robinson faithfully capture the spirit of their version. The other song that stands out is "Straigh A's in Love" by Eddie Angel. It's often forgotten that Johnny Cash was not primarily a country singer. Beginning with his classic work at Sun Studio, he pretty much invented the rockabilly sound, and it is this spirit that is well represented here. Get this CD and keep it in your car to brighten up those pesky commutes.

4 out of 5 stars Straight A's 4 This Tribute Disc!.......2005-03-26

There is some excellent music on "Dressed In Black: A Tribute to Johnny Cash." Chris Knight is one of those musicians that always sparks my interest; his version of "Flesh & Blood" is such a plaintive laid back reading of this song that it gives an emotional mix of loneliness, hope & desire. It closes the set, but is one of the highlights for me. Eddie Angel's rockabilly "Straight A's In Love" is a naughty little tune that puts a smile on my face each time it comes on the changer. :) Austin songwriter Damon Bramblett's take on "I'm Gonna Sit on the Porch & Pick on My Old Guitar" may not seem polished, but it does exude a warmth that brings me into the music. Chuck Mead from BR5-49 produced this disc and plays on every track. His lead vocals on "There You Go" set your toe tapping, "You're gone again, I should'a known I couldn't win...He's by your side, you're gonna break another heart, you're gonna tell another lie." The Mavericks' Raul Malo sounds a bit like Chris Isaak to me on the slow shuffle of "I Guess Things Happen That Way." Rodney Crowell has been recording a series of great solo sets as well as with the Notorious Cherry Bombs. Here he turns a straightforward reading of "Ballad of a Teenage Queen." Robbie Fulks' "Cry, Cry, Cry" booms with great energy. No one will ever replace Johnny Cash, but these artists do a great job with songs that he previously polished. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Nice Tribute.......2004-02-24

Hank III's "Wreck of the Old '97" makes this disc worth owning. His daring to break out of the mold that so many other artists have poured this song into, while still respecting the original, is reason enough to add this CD to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Disc with one flaw.......2003-12-18

This disc is awesome! There's no beating Rodney Crowell, Redd Volkaert, and couple others. Now, I'm a Hank Fan also, and love what III does with his grandpa's music, but as for Wreck of the Old 97, he should be locked up. I wouldn't appear on anything rewriting a song that's been done for the past 75 years. Johnny, Hank Snow, all the ones I'd heard stuck very close to Vernon Dalhart's recording from the late '20s. III's almost made this disc a clay pigeon.
