Since I was born and raised in Brooklyn, I have followed Rev. Wright for a long time. This album has a few of his classics, along with some new songs.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD Timothy Wright has ever made.......2007-06-01

This is by far is the best CD that Timothy Wright has ever made. Starting with the theme song, the music is vibrant and diversified, a real change from the usual Timothy Wright CD's of the past. As always, the New York Fellowship adds its flair.

If you enjoy true praise, worship, and testimony this is the CD for you.

5 out of 5 stars mmm, mmm, good.......2007-05-22

Album Description

Digitally remastered reissue of this long-lost Psychedelic album from 1968 by this duo featuring Leon Russell. Poised between his past as a top Wrecking Crew session man (Phil Spector, The Byrds, Sonny And Cher) and assistant to Liberty A&R head Snuff Garret, and his future as a '70s Rock superstar, Russell teamed up with his Texas Psych buddy Marc Benno to work with Gene Clark, Harpers Bizarre and Gary Lewis in their new studio. In between sessions, they created this unusual and breathtaking album. Here once more is this amazing lost gem, intensified in Rev-Ola style, and ready to work it's magic! A great lost nugget by one of the major Rock superstars! 11 tracks. Rev-Ola. 2007.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-06-05

Folks, if you like Leon Russell/ASYLUM CHOIR/Marc Benno,
this is a real gem! The music is GREAT. I'm so glad they
finally released this entire album on it's own!

Some of the tracks were used as BONUS TRACKS for
ASYLUM CHOIR II but they didn't include some of the
better tracks. Now that it's all complete in one
package, it's wonderful!

"Look in...." has a completely different feel than
AQII but the musicianship, arrangements, and production
are all top notch too! A must have!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Is everybody ready?.......2006-02-26

Mitch Ryder was a great white R&B singer and the Detroit Wheels were a great white R&B band. They recorded a string of solid R&B songs, the biggest hits being "Jenny Take a Ride!", "Devil With a Blue Dress On & Good Golly Miss Molly" and "Sock It To Me-Baby!". But the group broke up at the height if their popularity when Mitch was convinced by his producer to pursue a solo career as a balladeer. This was a huge mistake, as Mitch had a rock and roll voice, not a big band voice. His career never recovered. But these 20 songs are fine examples of what Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels did best; make R&B influenced rock music.

5 out of 5 stars Pure, clean shot of industrial grade adrenalin........2006-02-15

This guy came and went so quick, even for the 60's, if you blinked you missed him. But, if you caught him, you were slammed into a vortex of raw, rough-edged energy that twisted you're head around and left you looking for you're momma. Man he was good. Just driving around, windows open, cigarette hanging out the window, cold beer nestled in the crotch and listening to Mitch.

Life was good.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Fun Rock & Roll.......2005-08-06

I remember toolin' around in my old Ford during my high school years listening to Mitch Ryder on my trusty ol' 8 track tape player. Recently I was reminiscing about that and decided I needed to hear Ryder's version of Little Latin Lupe Lu. So I logged on to Amazon and ordered "Rev-Up: The Best of Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels." Within three days, I received the CD and was transported back to those relative carefree days listening to great pieces such as Jenny Take a Ride, Little Latin Lupe Lu, Devil in the Blue Dress and many others. And what made it even better was the fact that it was a high quality digital recording as opposed to that "warbly" old worn out 8 track tape.

For anyone who likes good ol' time high energy Rock and Roll, I highly recommend this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Fine anthology.......2005-08-06

Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels specialized in R&B tinged frat rock and roll and this Rhino collection collects their best material in nice remastered sound. While this collection reveals there's a little more to them than just "Jenny Take a Ride!" and "Devil with a Blue Dress On and Good Golly Miss Molly", it also tends towards a "sameness" of sound. No real clunkers here, but you might find some of the tracks blending into each other.

BEST CUTS:
Besides the two aforementioned hits, "Too Many Fish in the Sea and Three Little Fishes" is a nice continuation of the "Devil with a Blue Dress..." formula. "I'd Rather Go to Jail" was buried on the B side of a Ryder solo single. It's a winner. "Rock and Roll" and "Long Neck Goose" come from the reunion of the band in the early 70s (as simply "Detroit").

BOTTOM LINE:
It won't change your life, but it may become the life of your oldies party.

3 1/2 stars

4 out of 5 stars Experience the urgency.......2005-06-21

In the December 2002 issue of Guitar Player, Ted Nugent said,

"In 1960, my band the Lourdes opened up for Billy Lee & the Rivieras, who eventually became Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. On guitar was a tall, lanky mother named Jim McCarty, who played a Gibson Byrdland through a Fender Twin Reverb. Man, I thought my balls were going to take off on the wings of an eagle! To this day, THAT'S the guiding light for every performance when I pick up a guitar.

"The stuff Jim played on songs like 'Jenny Take a Ride,' 'Good Golly Miss Molly,' 'Devil with a Blue Dress On,' and 'Sock It to Me' determined the very style that you hear on 'Stranglehold' and every other song I've ever played. THAT'S why I play a Byrdland. The depth of sound that he got, especially at the low volume levels they played at back then, was unprecedented. I'd never heard anything like it. If you want to celebrate the soul of electric guitar in its optimum delivery, listen to those early Mitch Ryder albums. They're still the benchmarks."

Those benchmarks are here. Solid bookends surround a collection of hits and near misses, along with a few questionable b-sides. As albums started becoming more dominant in 1967 with releases from Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and The Beatles, 1966 was arguably the last great year for hit singles. Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels recorded some of the year's most energetic tunes.

Something's missing, though: as strong as these songs are, they're even more intense on the original vinyl singles. For instance, the album version of Sock It To Me - Baby! appears here; it lacks the ascending sound effects near the start and end of the song. The radio edit of Rock 'N Roll is used, which lopped almost 2 minutes from the album cut. (By the way, Steve Hunter was Detroit's lead guitarist, not Jim McCarty.) Also missing are Ryder's 1969 single Sugar Bee and Detroit's 1972 cover of Gimme Shelter. The latter is on the CD version of Detroit with Mitch Ryder, but I've not heard Sugar Bee anywhere since it dropped from the Keener playlist.

Still, if you want to experience the musical urgency of that era, this CD is a great place to start.

This project from Bishop Bruce Parham is outstanding. I will be purchasing his next project as well. May God continue to bless him in the work of the Ministry.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful message and heartfelt music ministry.......2007-01-10

This is a project that allowed me to feel God's presence working through (in) Pastor Parham.

I was encouraged by "A Touch From You" and just the good music of "Gratitude" and of course "Hide Me" was the reason I purchased the CD. I must stay how pleasantly surprised I was to find so many treasures on this one project.

It is just wonderful Gospel music that tells the "good news". I believe there is a song on this CD for everyone. I also enjoyed the new arrangement of "God Is".

If you have never heard Jonathan Dubose on the base guitar then you are missing a treat! Get this CD...you won't regret it...to say the least you will be blessed.

5 out of 5 stars Soul was touched.......2006-05-19

After hearing Hide Me on my way to work one morning i had to call every record store around here where i live and I found it and i did not even eat lunch i had to have it. Rev Bruce parham is a true man of god with an anointing that you can feel through his songs. Praise God more praise and worship songs. PB

1 out of 5 stars poor service.......2006-03-20

You sent me a product that was not authentic, but had been used. It was not properly sealed as a brand new authentic CD should have been. When I downloaded on my computer, instead of the author and the names of the songs, I got unknown in my media windows player. I was very disappointed and will not use the service again.

5 out of 5 stars Hide Me.......2006-03-18

This song was such a blessing to me. Things that I had been going through in my life sometime ago. I began telling the Lord that I need him to hide me from my enemies. And amazingly I would go to sleep hearing the words Hide Me from my enemies even if the enemy is me. And I began to just cry. And finally one morning I had my tv on the XM radio channel with Direct tv and the song came on "Hide Me" by Pastor Bruce Parham and I just started screaming saying my God it is actually a song out about "Hide Me"and I called my Pastor to tell her because I had been telling her about how I had been hearing those words for days and nights.
If you haven't purchased this CD. Do so because it will bless you tremendous. Pastor Bruce Parham and Company keep up the good work!

4 out of 5 stars I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:
1. Complete symphonies
2. Complete symphonic poems
3. Cello concerto
4. Piano concerto
5. Violin concerto
6. Requiem
7. Stabat Mater
8. Slavonic Dances
9. Complete String quartets
10. Chamber music
11. Piano Works (solo and duet)
12. Rusalka

As far as I can tell, the only things missing are The Spectre's Bride and Jacobin. Seeing as it is 40 cds, i have not had an opportunity to listen to it, however what i have heard i have been quite satisfied with.

Album Description

Julie's first album from 1955 set out her stall for all time, soft eroticism and single entendre, with sparse accompaniment for a late night groove that has been hard for generations to resist...with Barney Kessel's muted guitar and Ray Leatherwood's subtle bass the only sound apart from Julie's own bedroom whisper...just try to resist. 13 tracks wonderfully packaged with pics of the sultry Miss London and full of notes. Revola. 2006.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Everyone a gem.......2007-05-07

This Album changed my appreciation of music for life. Rock & Roll with it's 3 chord 12 bar blues & 4 chord turnaround formats seemed boring when compared to the guitar playing of Barney Kessell accompanied by Ray Leatherwood on base and the superb vocals of Julie London. This is the epitome of this musical genre and nothing has surpassed it for me.
I love all 13 tracks and can see little point in reviewing each one individually. Off course "Cry Me a River" became Julie's trademark and has been immitated by many top female vocalists. Some how Julie's version remains the best.

5 out of 5 stars Magic.......2007-03-31

I owned this album in the 50's, and though I always hated the cover, the voice is pure magic.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Martini Mood Music!.......2007-01-10

An excellent genre-creating album from the '50s before rock n roll came crashing. Really takes me back. Back where? How should I know? I was born in 1966! I was listening to Rubber Soul and Revolver in the womb! What I mean is this record conjures a mood as well or better than any of the exotica, ez, space-pop or swinger hep-cat sounds of the era. Martin Denny was my gateway to finding this great stuff...

5 out of 5 stars Ground zero album for exotica along with wordless vocal masterpiece that makes Pink Floyd's "Great Gig In The Sky" seem tame.......2006-08-03

It is my hope that all of Les Baxter's exotica albums will soon have made it to CD, and this hope is becoming a bit more of a reality, thanks to the release of these two great pieces of impressionist mood music from the master himself.

Martin Denny may have had the minor Top 40 hit with 1959's "Quiet Village", but I still prefer the original, complete with lush orchestral strings and a myriad of percussion instruments, as is featured as easily the most famous and recognizable selection off of the first true exotica album, 1951's "Ritual of the Savages". Much of the album will remind anyone over 50 of the soundtracks of old movies set in tropical locales, such as "The African Queen", "Hurricane", "Drums of Tahiti", "King Solomon's Mines", or any number of Tarzan films.

The daughter of a wealthy and prominent Jewish family in Philadelphia, Beatrice Kurzman studied voice with the intent of honoring her family's wishes that she become a cantor. However, she veered off that course and into popular music, but adapted the stage name of Bas Sheva ("Bathsheba") to attempt to at least meet her family's wishes half-way. After performing in the Jewish resorts of the New York Catskill Mountain "Borscht Belt" in the early 1950's, in 1953, she recorded, in a brash, brassy and somewhat untraditional way, an album of traditional Jewish songs on Capitol Records, the long out-of-print "Soul Of A People".

Her powerful and unique voice caught the attention of fellow Capitol labelmate Baxter, who made her the voice of woman in his 1954 tone poem "The Passions". While I have always preferred Baxter's true exotica albums over this one, it still is a very interesting and unusual album. I love wordless vocals and this is something Les Baxter also uses to good effect on his mostly instrumental exotica releases. Sheva shows a true dynamic range on this album with "Lust" being an especially good cut, featuring Sheva at her most sensual, with sounds almost simulating orgasm. I would have liked to have seen the look on her parents' faces when they heard this album.

This and "Soul Of A People" are the only known recordings Bas Sheva ever made. She returned to live entertaining and died of diabetic shock while performing on a cruise ship off the coast of South Carolina in 1960. She was only 34.

5 out of 5 stars The very best of the Rev.......2006-03-19

I learned about Reverend Gary Davis's music by listening to a Hot Tuna concert DVD. Jorma and Jack mentioned him in their interviews. I quickly found this cd at Amazon.com and enjoyed hearing the real thing from the reverend in a very good recording.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the man's work.......2003-09-30

My local record store was doing a promotion on this series, so I took a chance on this collection, and I'm glad I did. I'm pretty familiar with Chicago electric blues, as typified by Chess Records, but I've been wanting to go beyond that. This collection of Rev. Gary Davis's work is really strong, and the notes indidate the original label each track was taken from, making it easy to follow up and get additional CDs by him. I went back the next day and got all the rest of the CDs in the series, and I will report back when I have had a chance to absorb them.

5 out of 5 stars "If heaven exists, he'll be playing at the gates...".......2006-03-09

If heaven really exixts, Reverend Gary Davis will be playing at the gates to welcome us all in. Man!! Only a blind man could finger a guitar the way this man did. At some point the material becomes secondary to the performance of this incredible gifted musician and singer. This is music from the very core of one's being. Though there isn't a bad cut on the album, my favorite's are "Let Us Get Together" and "I Belong To The Band," to mention a few.

This is the music that influenced some of the greats, I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars "Blues" finds its hope in "Faith" via blind guitarist..........2003-01-05

Gary Davis was born blind, black, and broke in South Carolina in 1896. Big obstacles, but he also was blessed with talent and got paid for his guitar-pickin' by the time he was a teen. Ordained as a minister at age 36, he changed his song inventory to Gospel and hymns exclusively. He ended up in NYC, performing at mostly Black churches and on the streets. In the late '50's, the "Folk Revival" of blessed memory provided him a brief celebrity beyond those venues. This album was recorded in 1960 at the Jersey jazz studio of the legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder. You get 44 minutes of soul survival stuff here, and any blues buff ought to own it. The more casual fan may have to listen a few times to really like Gary's vocals, but his guitar work is fun from the first chord. The recording quality is excellent. To me, the only flaw is that each song would have benefitted from one fewer sung verse, and one more instrumental passage. It's not that Gary's voice is any more rough than other bluesmen. The problem is that the lyrics of these church songs belabor the point and get a bit repetitious. Still, he was one of the best of his kind. Imagine him at 64, alone in the recording booth for three hours, doing 20 songs, of which these are supposedly the best takes of the best 12. He had not recorded anything in four years: in fact, he had only recorded in 1935, '54 and '56 prior to this August 24, 1960 session. On that day, Kennedy and Nixon were running for president, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Yankees were heading toward a classic World Series, and I was living about 40 miles south of the studio, getting ready to begin 11th grade. Rev. Davis was doing something more important: preserving the Black church songs of early 20th century for posterity.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Davis Introduction Available.......2001-07-21

My collection includes all of The Reverend's recorded works. If you are going to buy just one Davis disc -- or if you are looking for a good introduction to this Blues/Ragtime master, "Harlem Street Singer" is unquestionably the best choice. The recording captures Davis at his most passionate vocally and at this top of his game as a gutarist. A lot of his early work suffers from poor recording technology, however this disc sounds like it was cut in a 21st Century studio.

I'm not a religious person, but Davis' music is almost enough to send me running to church. The piercing conviction of the lyrics and sycopated guitar in Twelve Gates, Great Change and Samson and Deliah still send chills of guilt up my spine.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets........1999-09-06

If you enjoy both blues and gospel music, you will discover on this CD that for Reverend Davis there is no distinction between the two forms. Samson and Delilah and Death don't Have No Mercy were tunes that influenced The Grateful Dead and other Rock bands, but here you get the full, original impact of these songs.

Reverend Davis was without question one of the greatest blues guitar stylists ever, and this album captures some of his strongest recorded work. The importance and beauty of this recording cannot be overemphasized!

5 out of 5 stars Glad I got a good recording.......2005-03-14

Although I grew up listening to and playing classical music (in the amateur category), only recently have I started working on my own collection and expanding my exposure to different composers and performers. I was not previously familiar with these particular pieces, but I had all of Dvorak's symphonies, and loved them, so wanted to expose myself to his other works. However, I am a very recent graduate, which of course means very little money, so I was hesitant to purchase this recording because I knew I could get these pieces cheaper. I finally decided to get it through the prodding of my friend at the store, who said I couldn't go wrong with Itzhak. I have not been dissapointed with my purchase and would recommend this album to others.
