Creed burst out of Florida with 1997's My Own Prison, a dark but commercial debut reminiscent of the early-'90s Seattle sound. Creed's moody guitar grunge and ardent lyrics, coupled with singer Scott Stapp's passionate vocals, helped My Own Prison sell millions. Human Clay demonstrates that this likable quartet hasn't messed with success; they turn in a sophomore outing rife with evocative moodiness, soaring guitars, and a dark, roiling, intense vibe. "Beautiful" is but one of the winners on this strong 11-song CD. Haunting and indeed beautiful, the track is more delicate and seductive than most heard here, as is another lilting and mysterious entry, "Never Die," which boasts some Middle Eastern accents. "Higher" is typical Creed--safe, emotive guitar rock for the masses, but with a slight edge. Memorable hooks, Soundgarden-like guitars, and Vedder-like vocals make Human Clay at once compelling and effectively redundant. --Katherine Turman
Customer Reviews:
Formulised Abomination.......2007-07-14
After their previous CD, which was not too bad on one or two tracks, "Human Clay" came out. More the same stuff, just on a different CD. This CD was truly a step backwards for Creed, if that were ever possible.
It seems like Creed tried to add some grunge elements to their music, and it just didn't come off. Abominable tracks like "Wrong Way", with occassional ventures into real rock, "Say I", that borders on the dismal, and more that truly defy the senses.
The pity is that the lyrical content is actually pretty good and has some substance to it. Sadly, the overall execution just didn't cut it and match that.
Even for fans of hard rock, this would be a CD to avoid. Don't waste your money.
Good, solid rock performance.......2007-07-08
I was not familiar with the band before giving this a listen and I like what I heard. Willlook to add more Creed to library.
I had to come and review this dreck.......2007-06-23
Scott Stapp is already said and done, Creed no longer is alive and Scott Stapp is already going the way of Brittany Spears. SO reviewing this is pretty much a waste of time. Im late? _______ that _________!
First Scott Stapp is a total moron. Insulting Fred Durst? To be honest, I hate Scott Stapp more than Fred Durst. He's one of the worst "singers" ever, and only people like Lame Gallagher from _____ band Oasis surpass this hack. Attacking 311 is even worse. 311 will do a lot more than Scott Stapp will ever be.
Anyway, _____ scott, Creed itself is so _________ boring, it's lame, and the music will put you to sleep. IT's like staring at a _________ wall for hours, or something of that nature. Long story short-it's generic, stupid, boring, generic music that sounds like something the cat dragged in. It's not music, plain and simple. It's noise, well there is noise music, and they are worthy, so what is Creed? Calling it noise is a disgrace to respectful noise musicians (which yes, I like). I have no clue, but it's not music, plain and simple.
Pearl Jam owns Creed's sorry little @$$, but that news is way too old. Let this record rot on the shelves. Creed are done for, and Eddie Vedder still lives on. Glad your dead, Kurt. Glad he's burning. Then again, he took his life.
Honestly people, they were sued by their own fans..........2007-03-29
Everyone has heard about that right? Creed was sued by their own fans for playing crappy live shows ahahaha! It would be really difficult to find a rock album that sucks more than this. Seriously, if you ever feel the desire to buy this piece of garbage, please rethink it and buy the albums that these guys are ripping off and pilfering from. Anything by Pearl Jam or other early nineties rock act would be great. Collectively, we can make America a place where talentless losers like Creed don't become stars with their awful music!
"What if your words could be judged like a crime?".......2006-10-26
Creed is(or was) one of the most loathed mainstream rock bands in recent memory, and I never truly figured out why that was. Granted I only own Human Clay, and have only heard the singles from My Own Prison and Weathered. My brother bought Human Clay around the time it came out, and we almost listened the disc into little plastic particles! Of course, I was only about 12 at the time, so I couldn't fully appreciate the album as much as others could, lyrically speaking. Well, about 6 months ago, I was getting ready to move, and I found a "weathered" jewel case sitting somewhere in a dusty old box. I popped it in, and all the memories came flooding back to me, I felt like I was twelve again. I swear I've listened to it another 50 times since I rediscovered it.
Human Clay is one of the better rock records of the last 10 years. Mark Tremonti's awesome lead guitar coupled with Scott Stapp's Vedderesc agressiveness are the two most immediate aspects of the record. These guys are definitely a step up from most of the mainstream crop, and the record hasn't aged one bit, it sounds like it could've come out just yesterday. There aren't any weak songs on Human Clay, per se, although to get the weakest out of the way: "Wrong Way"...............And that's about it. Other than that the only thing that bothers me about Human Clay is the fact that there are two versions of "With Arms Wide Open", which I find sort of needless. Now that the negatives are out of the way, we'll get to where Human Clay Excels. The Opening track, "Are You Ready", definitley sets the tone for what's to come. Notable are the agressive vocal thrashes accompied by melodic guitar riffs, though neither seem to dominate eachother. The production quality on Human Clay is fantastic, though I'd have liked it if there were a few more songs on the album. It kinda ends before you'd hoped it would, with barely over an hour of music(including the "With Arms Wide Open" repeat). This is the average as I understand it, but maybe more and more bands are putting more than 10 songs on their records these days, and maybe that's spoiled me.
The best songs on Human Clay are definitely: "What If", "Higher", and "Faceless Man". Those are by far the ones I listen to the most, although I rarely if ever skip by any songs on the record, other than "Wrong Way".
There is a theory that different people hear the same music differently from eachother, and I think because of this band's popularity, it's created this massive debate. Don't debate, just enjoy this or something else. But please, if you haven't given Creed a shot yet, I can definitely recommend Human Clay to you.

creed- only improved.......2005-11-16
While shopping online, I came across this CD and wondered, "What's the difference between this one and the regular 'Human Clay' CD?" Well, a good bit.
For example, the clarity on this CD is a lot better than the original and there is one surprise: a bonus track called "Young Grow Old", an absolutely awesome offering from Creed.
However, there isn't much else original about the CD- and that's fine. The original "Human Clay" CD is here, with its showcase offerings like "With Arms Wide Open", "Higher", and "What If", and nothing is missing that made "Human Clay" great. Still, there's just something missing that prevents me from giving it the full 5 stars. Also, the second CD contains acoustic versions of "What's This Life For" and "With Arms Wide Open", plus three other songs.
Overall rating: classic Creed, with a brand new single- what more can you ask for? 4.5 stars
Awesome!.......2003-08-13
This CD is perhaps my favorite out of all the ones I own. The 2nd CD is particularly great. "Is This The End?" is probably my favorite Creed song, if not my favorite song, period. It's so powerful, even moreso than "Higher", "With Arms Wide Open", and the multitude of other singles Creed has put out. It's a shame these types of CDs aren't issued in the US, but that they must be imported from around the world. A must-have for ANY Creed fan (especially if you don't own "Human Clay" already!).
Creed at their best!.......2003-01-09
I got this set from a guy in Singapore on E-Bay, along with the asian ones for MOP and Weathered, MOP has an extra song on it, Bound and Tied, and Weathered has an extra CD with WAWO, Higher and What If (on of my favorites), but the best extra was this one. To Whom It May Concern is a GREAT song, as is Is This The End?, that one is sooooo totally wonderful!!!!! My only complant is that it's TO good and I never take my Creed CD's out of my player! It's gotten to the point where I never seem to be able to turn off my boom box, and it's driving my parents insane. "So, is this the end for us my friend?", yes it is, that's all I have to say (right now at least). Peace! \m/
The bonus tracks are great.......2002-04-09
i Listened to the CD and I love it. I have the United States Release also. Not that It matters to me the Editorial says that it is an Asian Territory Release, But around the outside to the disc it says Australian limited. Is the Disc Australian or Asian. Is it really limited to 5000 copies. The Disc is great. I would recommend it to anyone that likes good spirited, positive, Rock music
Creed's quality just keeps getting Higher :).......2001-08-01
Before reviewing this CD, I'd like to tell you a little story. My name's Dan, and I've been a Creed fan ever since I heard "My Own Prison" on a local radio station. As soon as My Own Prison was released, I bought the album, and enjoyed it thoroughly. Not only were they a great solid rock band, but the lyrics and singing were incredible. You rarely hear inspirational and poetic lyrics in a rock song. Not so with Creed. When I heard that Creed was releasing another album, Human Clay, I knew I had to get it. So as soon as I had the chance I went out and bought it. I never thought that they could get any better than what I've heard on My Own Prison. They did. It was my absolute favorite CD ever. I took it everywhere I went, even school. I had been listening to it in my Computer Programming class, but forgot to take it out. I realized this on the trip home. The next day early in the morning I ran to the computer before my first period class, hoping to find the CD in the drive, only to realize it was gone. Nowhere to be found. I can't explain how upset I was. So I logged on the Amazon.com a few months later (I had borrowed a friend's CD, but it was about time to return it!) to see buy a new CD, when I found the double CD European import. It had Human Clay AND a bonus disc with some other unreleased songs. I ordered it and received it the other day. It's the best set of CDs ever! I love Human Clay, but on the bonus disc there's a the acoustic version of "What's This Life For?" I had to fall in love with it because it was my favorite Creed song on My Own Prison. It sounds just as great played with an acoustic guitar as it does with the electric. I also love to Whom it May Concern. It's Creed, after all! Well, to make a long story short, I think it's an excellent CD set and no Creed fan will be disappointed. Sorry I wasn't so articulate, but I'm tired! :)

Must have for any Talisman Fan.......2005-08-18
The more I listen to this cd the more I like it. Don't short change yourself if you are a Talisman fan or if you even just like them. This is one of the best that Jeff and Marcel did together. Every song is great and well written. Usually when part of a band(a great band) does a side project, it usually is just ok or not so good, not this one. It is excellent!
SOLID CD.......2001-04-30
The cd features Jeff Scott Soto & Marcel Jacob of Talisman & Yngwie fame...
The CD mixes elemets of Rainbow & early Whitesnake... JSS & Jacob wrote & played all of the music on the CD... xecept on the song "jealousy" in which they are joined by Yngwie..
The song "Heaven on Earth" is without a doubt the best song this duo ever wrote...
This CD is just a solid CD from the first song until the last song on the CD....
a strong CD and I hope you but this CD!!!

Rough and Ripping Rock.......2002-05-10
This is a great CD. Eventhough Creed is widely known for their (perhaps) hardrock tendencies and ripping guitar riffs, I also like the fact that their music is melodic as well. Stapp's (lead vocalist) voice is truly a gem and so personifies the Creed sound. They know ways to reach you, that I've seldomly come across. Their lyrics are deep and heartfelt. This is one CD I would recommend across the board, basically because it's just good music.
The bonus track is a great addition and it also features an hidden track at the end, namely a string version of 'With arms wide open'. Other favorites of mine are the opening song 'Are you ready' but also 'Beautiful' and 'Faceless Man'. Ofcourse the hitsingle 'With arms wide open' and 'Higher' are special too.
All in all a great addition to every collection. If you haven't already gotten yourself this copy, go out and buy one SOON.
garbage that the US shamefully has to import.......2002-02-28
1 bonus track = added garbage in an era of bad music. To claim this is rock music is a shame on rock itself. This is pop. It's sad that this in a import to countries where music still has integrity and taste. Radiohead, U2, Led Zeppelin, Stone Temple Pilots, Travis, Oasis. This is what rock is about. Creed misses on all accounts with formulaic, repetive melodies of safe commerical pop with rehashed lite-metal riffs straight from the stolen bin. The US is gullible, but I didn't think it would come this far....
Creed - Human Clay - IMPORT CD + Bonus Track!.......2001-10-25
I bought this album for "With Arms Wide Open". Before I even knew the words to this song, I was deeply touched by the emotion expressed in this song. Then I bought it, and I saw the lyrics, and I realized that WAWO communicated with me on a feeling level first, then on an intellectual level (after I saw the words). The first album by Creed I bought was "My Own Prison" for "Torn". It didn't take me long to fall in love with the whole album. I was interested in "Human Clay", but I didn't think that I would like "Human Clay" better than "My Own Prison", but I do! "Human Clay" is a terrific album -- and I would definately recommend getting the Import, for the bonus track "Young Grow Old". It is worth the extra money!
Wow, much better than My Own Prison.......2001-05-09
I had listened to Human Clay and I loved it! I had wanted to buy this cd for so long, and finally I saw it in a store. I live in Kenya so the CD stores here don't get many good CD's. At first, I didn't realize that it had a bonus track on it, I just wanted Human Clay. Luckily, neither did anyone at the store. They were selling it for the same price that they would have sold the normal version for. I didn't know that it was a bonus track until very recently. I had wondered why I didn't remember the song "Young Grow Old" from the other times that I listened to Human Clay. This song is up with "What If", "Beautiful", and "Higher" as one of my favorites. It is well worth the extra money.
If you're willing to plunk down the extra money............2001-04-03
this is the version of Human Clay to get. The "extra track" was a part of the Human Clay sessions that in my (not so) humble opinion is the best song they recorded. Don't get me wrong all the songs are great, but I am seriously disappointed that the US version didn't have "young grow old" on it, although Creed did offer it as a downloadable track. Anyhow I'm just ranting now, but seriously, one way or another get a hold of "young grow old" and see if you don't agree with me.

Customer Reviews:
Beautifully understated drama.......2005-06-10
Despite a lack of big arias, Golem is a good opera. The singers in this production are very effective in conveying the inner tensions of their characters. Although there is little physical movement, the drama of Rabbi Judah Loeb confronting the monster he has created is intense.
The scenic cantata, Arald, is Bretan's masterpiece. It is a lyrical evocation of memory, despair, and resignation. Arald puts the listener through all of the emotional upheaval of Das Lied von der Erde in half of the time. This performance of Arald is as affecting as the best performances of Das Lied von der Erde that I have heard.
More beautiful music than we'd any right to expect........2001-01-25
The Transylvanian composer Bretan had one of the grimmer lives of any notable composer - his wife's family were murdered in Auschwitz; his refusal in post-war Romania to become a Communist led to his silencing - but you wouldn't know it from either of these operas.
They are serious and solemn enough. 'Golem' takes the old story of a rampaging Frankenstein-type monster and turns it into a melancholy dialogue about life, science, creation, family. 'Arald', with its hero supplicating the Seer of the Underworld to resuscitate his dead love, forswears doomy Gothic in favour of more metaphysical musings.
From a dramatic point of view, both works are static. Musically, however, they are gloriously reminiscent of mid-period Verdi - bountifully melodic, rapturously sad - with an Eastern European flavour. The fact that an opera composer in the mid-20th century dared even write a TUNE is reason enough to rejoice.
Two short beautiful, somber lyric operas........1999-05-07
"Golem" is a one-act opera about the legendary clay man created by the Rabbi of Prague. The poignant libretto is by the composer. The music is beautiful and lyric, but has no memorable tunes. Stylistically, it is a bit like Rimsky-Korsakoff's operatic writing. "Arald" is not really an opera but a scenic cantata. It tells of the despair of the khan of the Avars over the loss of his wife. The gloom of both text and music put me off at first. On second hearing, I loved it! It is more tuneful than "Das Lied von der Erde" and has none of the dissonance of Bartok's "Duke Bluebeard's Castle", but the mood is similar.
