Album Description

Formed in Forest Hills, NY, in 1974, this quartet of quintessential punk forefathers blitzkrieged out of NYC's legendary CBGB scene and into world fame with three loud, lean, hard, and fast albums before the Sex Pistols even took their first shot. Besides basically inventing punk rock, Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, and Tommy outlasted almost every one of their legions of followers, delivering their signature pop and garage-flavored chainsaw sound for over 20 years, through a string of infamous albums and 2,263 concerts together. Spanning 1976-1995, this new collection features 20 classic tracks, including "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker," "Rockaway Beach," "Rock `N' Roll High School," "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Pet Sematary," and "Blitzkrieg Bop."

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to a Truly Revolutionary Band.......2007-06-27

OK, so most of the Ramones' songs are a lot alike and sound like they were recorded in somebody's garage (hence 4 stars instead of 5), their infectious energy makes them unforgettable. They detonated like a bomb amid the slick disco and overproduced pop music scene of the 1970's. Their music was profoundly influential, but more importantly it was fun ... And it still is, long after Sheena traded in her spiked hair and leather jacket for a mini-van and house in the suburbs. This CD is a great introduction for a musical dilettante like me. Although I'm sure the true Ramones' fans will complain that this song or that has been left off, for those of us among the great unwashed, it delivers the goods. So hey-ho let's go!

4 out of 5 stars The Ramones wrote hit songs.......2006-07-06

In a more perfect world the Ramones would have had a load of hit records. Their songs were written to be hits. Joey Ramone was always thinking that their next release was gonna be the one that would top the charts.

Recent collections handpicked by Johnny Ramone have concentrated on the rougher & tougher stuff but the Ramones are probably more loved for their "shoulda been a hit" material.

The reason why I like this collection is that it primarily highlights the songs that should have been blasting out of our radios for the past 30 years.

5 out of 5 stars Sorry But...........2006-06-25

Ramones are my favorite band ever i would have to say, hence the 5 stars.... but since I have virtually their entire collection, The two best of compilations to get I would have to say are "Loud, Fast Ramones" or "Ramones Mania". Basically if you have those two compilation and their first self titled album, you can consider yourself set for a while. Ramones "Anthology is also awesome. My two favorite Ramones albums of all time are RAMONES "Ramones" and "Mondo Bizarro", Of course I'm talking about getting a quick RAMONES fix here, or if you just wanna check out the band for the first time... you gotta start somewhere right? well i wouldn't start here, I would strongly suggest, for the price and a good starting place either "Loud, Fast" or "Mania", the two-disc "Anthology" is pretty damn good as well... But c'mon ,How bout a rarities disc already or something???

1 out of 5 stars NOOOOOOOOOOO.......2006-06-23

This is horrible. ok, 1. There are already like 3 greatest hits packages and an anthology. There's no need for more. 2. If you are a true Ramones fan(like me), you buy the albums, not greatest hits. Very disapponting.

4 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits???Which ones?.......2006-06-21

If I rate this with 4 stars and not 5 is for one simple reason: C'mon man, lets get serious for a sec, here: I am THE biggest "pinhead" ever (and by that, I mean, the biggest Ramones fan...), but I will always be the first to admit the truth: The Ramones NEVER had any "hits" to speak of. Cult following, over a dozen albums, over 20 years of career... yeah, all of that, but "hits"... I don't think so!

Mainstream success eluded the Ramones during all their career. That's not to say that they didn't have great songs, it simply means that their commercial success was very limited. Few bands have had (and will have) the impact and the influence of the Ramones, but the "Greatest Hits" label really doesn't apply here. Of course, record companies wouldn't know the first thing about common sense, so... clearly in this case they should have used the "Best Of" tag, but...anyway, who cares about semantics?

We're talking punk rock, here, and the Ramones were trailblazers. All the songs here are punk rock classics. As we all know, everyone has their own personal favorites, so everyone has the right to moan and complain about the omission of this song or that song but... the bottom line: if you are a pinhead, you don't need this. If you are looking for a first taste of the Ramones, then this could be the right place to start.

But personally, I would recommend either "Ramonesmania" or "Ramones: Loud and Fast" over this new compilation, simply because they have more songs... it's a little more dough, but it's well worth it. And obviously, "Anthology" is the superior choice...(not to mention the Box Set...)

It was only a matter of time before SpongeBob Squarepants became a star big enough to pull off a concept album. Where so many other megawatt celebrities, be they living and land-based or fictional and sea-dwelling, can get all high-minded and grand when cobbling together a theme for their music, though, our man Sponge proves he's as humble and porous as ever on The Best Day Ever, a 26-track bonanza that delivers us into WH2O studios for a "live broadcast" from Bikini Bottom. Under the phony programmatic direction of snazzy DJ Al Bacore (get it?), SpongeBob & the Hi-Seas--a motley assemblage of characters including Plankton, Squidward, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Pearl, and Sandy--trot out 13 songs between often gut-busting station-based interstitials (in one, hapless caller Patrick can't figure out he's supposed to turn down his radio to hear). The music and lyrics, if not the intentionally doofusy vocals, are inspired: Brian Wilson (how did they get him to agree to this?) sings backup on "Doin' the Krabby Patty," Flaco Jimenez lends Latin flair squeezebox-style on "Barnacles!," and Tommy Ramone of the Ramones hammers out a punkish percussive number on "Ridin' the Hook." Through it all, even when he's baring his soul in a heartwarming serenade to his tighty whiteys, SpongeBob's nice-guy persona sets a friendly, happy tone: the mood, loud and clear as a seal's bark, is pure best-day-ever celebration; the master of ceremonies works his yellowness, squareness and general dim-wittedness to masterful effect. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album Ever!.......2007-05-27

Get ready for an amazing experience that will change your listening habits....then put on this album. The first song is a mind-blower! "The Best Day Ever" seems like a cute little summer fun song but after you get into it you realize that musically it's really heavy! This is like a Beach Boys song that sucks you in with it's cute little beat and lyric and then knocks you out with it's musical sophistication.
The next song is "Employee Of The Month". This is pure power-pop. The Who circa 1966 meets The Turtles.WOW!!!
"Under My Rock" is sung by Patrick. This is classic garage-rock. Rave-up at the end reminds me of The Count Five.
"My Tighty Whiteys" is simply the best song and best production that has been released since the hey day of the Brill Building. Again...this seems simple but it's super sophisticated! My vote for best bridge since "Wouldn't It Be Nice?". Andy Paley and Tom Kenny are a great writing team! This is what's missing from pop music!
There is something for every pop music fan on this album. Guest stars include...Brian Wilson , Mandy Barnett, Nino Tempo , Tommy Ramone, Flaco Jimenez, James Burton , N.R.B.Q., Tommy Morgan , Jerry "The Geator" Blavett
etc..
I never get tired of this record. It's on in my car all the time. I've given it to all my hip friends and they all love it , as do their young kids and their stoner , college-age kids!
It's a HIT!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album Ever!!!.......2007-04-03

We went to a live performance by Tom Kenny, Mr. Lawrence and the guys who made this record down at Amoeba Records in Hollywood. It was fabulous!! The songs are WONDERFUL!!! If you want to get into a good mood, buy this album! The songs are like 60's beach music, which is a perfect fit for Spongebob. My favorite song is Employee of the month, but I also love Plankton's "You Will Obey!!" with it's explosion at the end. The whole album is done like a radio show. My daughter loves to say AAAAL Bacore!!! Who is the Tuneful Tuna, a dj. This CD is great for the entire family and I give it my highest recommendation.

The Ramones' April 1976 debut, recorded for little more than $6,000, long ago passed into legend. Its exalted status as the inspiration for thousands of punk bands worldwide, though, hasn't overshadowed its monolithic roar, the knowing hilarity of its lyrics ("Judy Is a Punk" crams the SLA, the Ice Capades, and a salute to Herman's Hermits into a 90-second frame), and the impulse to blast it for everyone within earshot: Hey, listen to this. Embracing and rewriting rock & roll history at once, Ramones speeded up heavy music, adding a pop patina to songs inspired by horror movies and glue sniffing, and claiming a great Chris Montez tune ("Let's Dance") from the supposedly fallow period that had fallen between Elvis and the Beatles. Absurdist, yeah (how could anything with Joey's super-affected Liverpool-via-Queens accent be otherwise?) and also smart: "Havana Affair" is the greatest song about the cold war this side of Dylan. This remastered edition complements the original LP with a slew of demos, including a Spectoresque "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," and the single version of "Blitzkrieg Bop," that, equally prophetically, puts Joey's vocal through a mixing trick that makes him sound like he's on the mic at a football game. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars When someone says "punk"..........2007-07-10

This is the first thing that pops in my head. Every ounce of praise this album receives is deserved. It's minimalistic, raw, fast, and perfect. Melodies and progressions that are painfully simple and hard to forget. Lyrics that fit perfectly delivered. With DeeDee pounding his bass in your left ear, and Johnny buzzing in the right, this is the punk sound and format that will be emulated forever.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS PUNK....... AND PUNK IS DEAD !!.......2007-06-18

I WAS BORN IN 74, SO I DID NOT GET THE CHANCE TO LIVE IN THE YEARS OF `REAL`PUNK.TODAY EVERY THING IS PUNK : AVRIL LAVIGNE IS PUNK - FALL OUT BOY IS PUNK - BLINK 182 IS PUNK - EVEN WALLMART HAS A PUNK SECTION !! BUT,
FOR THE REAL THING, YOU HAVE TO LOOK IN THE PAST... NOTHING COMPARES TO THE RAMONES - NOTHING COMPARES TO THEIR 1ST ALBUM. IM GLAD TO SAY THAT I SAW THEM IN 96 IN VERDUN (QC). IM GLAD TO SAY THAT I GOT A RAMONES TATTOO - IM GLAD TO SAY THAT THIS IS THE BEST PUNK ALBUM EVER....... R.I.P

5 out of 5 stars Punk Rock.......2007-05-12

Great CD. I wish I grew up when the Ramones were getting big, but I was about a generation too late. Today's music is total crap with a few exceptions. There are too many labels and genres. Feels like people are trying to pretend they've got everything figured out by now. Or maybe that's how it's always been in music. Lot's of crap with a few beautiful exceptions.

5 out of 5 stars The Start.......2007-04-24

The Ramones *****

Hey Ho Lets Go...and so it began that start of something so amazing nothing will ever come close again. The Ramones single handedly created one of the greatest albums ever, along with one of the greatest musical movements in the history of rock n' roll. The bands debut has gone down in history as one of the most criticly aclaimed albums of all time. It is teh album that gave the New York punk movement the notoriaty it desereved.

Joeys slurred lyrics and vocal delivery are classic and signature only to him. He sings with his Brooklyn accent. Dee Dee las down some killer bass lines, Tommy plays the original punk drum beat, and Johnny plays the prototypical punk guitar. While many of the songs do sound the same they are all excellent. The three chord format works just as good for The Ramones as it does for AC/DC. The thing about The Ramones that blows my mind is how they managed not to become the biggest band of all time. Their songs were a hell of a lot catchier then even The Beatles' and The Beachboys together. They dont sound bad or play bad so how they managed to stay under the radar for so long and never really truly make it big until after they broke up is beyond me.

The album is fantastic from the first guitar chug of the imortal 'Blitzkrieg Bop' to the ringing of the amps at the end of 'Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World.' Every song is catchy and easy to relate to for any teenager. 'Blitzkrieg Bop' 'Beat On The Brat' and 'Judy Is A Punk' all went on to become Ramones and punk music classics. Songs like 'Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue' went on to have countless polls, magazines, and lists named after it. 'Havana Affair' inspired many a band to get together and while it may not have done that for the Red Hot Chili Peppers the band did cover the song as a tribute to the late Joey Ramone, and I might add they did an amazing cover of the song.

The Ramones will not only go down in history as one of punks great bands but as one of all musics greatest bands ever, and this is one of if not the greatest debut albums ever, sure to be on any list of the 100 greatest albums of all time. 100 albums may not seem like that big of a deal to some but when you think of all the albums ever made in rock n' roll history that is a monsterous acheivement. This is recomended to everyone from Billy Joel and Beachboy fans to fans of hardcore punk like Bad Brains, and The Casualties.

5 out of 5 stars Ramones - self-titled (Rhino/WEA).......2007-01-31

Review no. 127. Essential 1976 body slammin' proto-punk debut record from Joey and crew. Blistering cuts that'll having you literally playing this CD over until you wear it out (possibly)are "Blitzkrieg Bop", "Judy Is A Punk", the in-your-face "I Don't Wanna Go Down To The Basement", the total *ss-kicking "Havana Affair" and "Let's Dance". Plus, you get six added bonus tracks of demos of the band's repertoire. One thing I'll give The Ramones is they DIDN'T just stay together for two or three lp's LIKE so many other punk bands did, like the Stooges, New York Dolls, Dead Boys, MC 5, etc. They remained intact for twenty years, plus they were active all if not most of that time. Too bad three out of four of them are no longer with us. Highly recommended.

"Our records have the bitterness of life in them," quoth Dee Dee Ramone, and Rocket to Russia brought the pain. Despite carrying on the celebratory tone of the Ramones' debut and Leave Home in the likes of "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," "Cretin Hop," a tribute to dirty "Rockaway Beach," and covers of the Trashmen and "Do You Wanna Dance?" their third LP displays a dark humor that's less jokey than the previous releases' goofs on bad mental health and dysfunctional relationships. The group's best-produced of its first three releases, Rocket achieves an almost smooth texture thanks to a clean mix and increased use of Beach Boys-inspired vocal harmonies. Still, the joyous grind of Johnny's guitar is front and center for much of this enduring album. Rhino's refurbished version offers five bonus tracks, including a rough early version of "It's a Long Way Back to Germany" and a demo, "Slug," which imagines (?) a world crawling with insects. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars The Ramones Rocket to Russia.......2007-01-10

I bought this album because I owned it approx 30 years ago and had a vague memory of it being good. I was not dissappointed, in fact it seems to have improved with age, or maybe my taste has. Whichever is the case Rocket to Russia is in my humble opinon the best ever Ramones album. Cretin Hop is an all time classic not to mention Teenage Lobotomy, Sheena is a Punk Rocker and the best ever version of Surfing Bird. there are also 5 ripper bonus tracks. Long live the Ramones.

5 out of 5 stars Does punk get any better than this? I think not..........2006-11-25

Unlike some reviewers here, I didn't exactly grown up in the punk era of the late 70s/early 80s. Yeah I was around, but the diaper rash kinda hampered my appreciation for the genre. I kind of backed into the Ramones in high school after wondering where Green Day got their ideas from (and I am happy to say that once I heard the real thing I dropped Green Day and started buying albums from the likes of the Ramones, Talking Heads, The Clash, Devo, etc. etc.). This music wasn't really THAT old when I first discovered it, and it has really stuck with me through all my phases.

Anyway, in this era of emo, mall-punk, sloppy pseudo-hardcore and the like, it's refreshing to throw this one on the player and remember that punk rock can be far from the cheesy and awkward "devolution" which has occurred. Perhaps this fact alone shows the limitations of the genre as well. I mean, there is by definition only so much you can really do with a few chords and a lot of nervous or angry energy. That potential was largely maxed-out by around 1986 (although you never know, some would have said the same about 50s rock n roll). The point is, nothing that has happened since the release of this album takes anything away from its superior quality and the absolute pop PERFECTION of these rock n roll nuggets. It's got an angry Beach Boys sound that was stunningly unique for its time, and it's just so much fun to listen to nearly anywhere. If you like punk rock, this should be the first stop you make.

5 out of 5 stars a new favorite band has graced my prescences!.......2006-11-19

i cannot believe i let the Ramones fall by the wayside all these years i was into anything punk rock/anything good. when i used to think "Ramones" i used to think Blitzkrieg bop and i wanna be sedated and how they were so overplayed, so i just kind of disregarded the band with naivety.

now recently, i had picked up this album just because i wanted a cd and luckily i couldnt afford anything else besides this moderately priced album and when i listened, i instantly knew i had to have them all! the whole album is great and gets plenty of listening time.

i really dont know what else to say besides the fact that we need them in today's music scene more than ever. even if they were just the wise rock n roll sages that stood for something. shame that the all of the main guys died within 4 years. RIP Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee

OK, I know I'm slow. Still updating my 'vinyl'. This CD is EXCELLENT; even better with the xtra tracks.
All Ramones are kickass; and yes, I think the Spector album is great too.

5 out of 5 stars the punk Beach Boys.......2006-08-20

The Ramones were the punk Beach Boys and sung about the same concerns: going to the beach, being alone in your room, wanting girls. This album is one of the seminal punk documents and is a necessary part of anyone's musical collection. Pure pleasure all the way through. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Like most true originals, the Ramones embodied a dizzying array of contradictions. As punk godfathers, they became the archetype for a rebellious musical ethos that could often confuse the baby for the bath water, yet at heart they were 1960s pop- and bubblegum-worshipping reactionaries. The seeming unity symbolized by their street-hood uniform (ripped jeans, deck shoes, and black leather jackets) and name (nicked from an early nom de plume of Beatle Paul) belied turmoil both personal and personnel. And the dumber-than-dumb stance of the likes of "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue," "Cretin Hop," and "Teenage Lobotomy" actually masked some of the shrewdest rock ever recorded. If Rhino/Warner Archive's two-disc anthology seems like hardly enough room to document a band with a quarter-century legacy, it's good to remember that the Ramones prided themselves on stripping every song they attempted to its elemental core, then halving it again with their patented buzzsaw, double-stop tempo. Journalist David Fricke's enclosed history is telling, if ironically packaged in a glossy hard-back edition that seems more befitting the likes of Fleetwood Mac. The nearly five dozen tracks here, reaching from the early '70s to the late '90s, stand remarkably outside of time--just like true originals. --Jerry McCulley

You know how I got into the Ramones? Well, from reading Green Day's biography 'The Story of Green Day', Billie-Joe said that at least half of what you hear on the radio these days has been influenced by the Ramones. So I decided to check them out, and I LOVED them! I now love them almost as much as I love Green Day. They have a colourful history and great music! You should so check out this anthology of their greatest hits of all time, and if you don't then you're a moron.

4 out of 5 stars It's a Sensation.......2007-02-11

(I'm no kid, but I'm a thinker)
I own all of there Studio albums pluse three live ones and to be honest I bought this for only two resons...
1. The tracks I Don't Wanna Live This Life (Anymore and the C.J. vocal verson of R.A.M.O.N.E.S.
2. I wanted something I could just grab to least to in the car and not have to drag all my CDs with me.
Now the songs themselfs I'd give 5 stars to but there are some songs on this CD collection I thought wern't imporatant to a collection like this and there are a few I would like to have seen.
What should not have been included...
I Remember you
Here Today, Gone Tommorrow
Surfin' Bird
Don't Come Close
I Can't Make It On Time
I'm Affected
She's a Sensation
I'm Not Afraid of Life
With that I was really upset to find the song "We're a Happy Family" (A Ramones Classic) Not on this collection. Johnny once said himself that the Ramones collection out there we're focusing too much on there softer stuff to get sales. This doesn't seem much differnt to me. But at the same time you can't put just there hits on because they never had one.
The song I wish would be one this collection...
Today Your Love, Tommorrow the World
We're a Happy Family
Do You Wanna Dance
I'm Aganist It
I Wanted Everything
Outsider
Warthog
Love Kills

I guess over all a alright collection. Real True-Blue fans might be a little upset but thats life, get over it!
If your looking for just a start to the band get "Loud, Fast: Their Toughest Hits"
Gabba Gabba Hey!

5 out of 5 stars Heads out of butts and fingers out of ears.......2006-12-29

I reading the reviews for this CD I have noticed that some are not reviews of the CD it self or sound quality but of the band itself. I love every thing the ramones have done. They are one of the few bands that didn't change for anyone. I don't give a flying rat what you think about the band. If you have a problem with the band the tell it to some one who cares. I wanna hear if it's got a good track listing or a good booklet, not if you like the band or not. What the heck are you doing spending $[...] on a band your just looking into anyway? As for you who say their not "punk" They started punk so wouldn't that mean stuff like Green Day and (barf!) Blink 182 are NOT? Yeah, get your heads out of your butts and cry a river to some one who cares. Review the CD not the Band.
If your a Ramones fan you will like the track listing and the booklet. If you just want a small look into the band then go for Loud, Fast The Ramones. For half the price it gives you a quick look into the band that changed the face of music.

the ramones are probably my favorite band. it is well known that their first 3 albums are considered classics. so if you don't want to buy the anthology you should pick up on of the first 3. ok but the problem with that is then you don't get anything from end of the century or the other great songs after those 3 (there weren't too many) with this anthology you get the basics "blitzkrieg bop" "judy is a punk" "california sun" "beat on the brat" you also get "rock 'n' roll highschool" "do you remember rock 'n' roll radio?" "danny says" and that's on disc one... on disc two you get their harder songs like "the kkk took my baby away" "my brain is hanging upside down" "pet semetery" the second disc is okay but there are a lot better songs that the ramones made that were kept out of this set. for instance there isn't any "oh oh i love her so" "you're gonna kill that girl" "today your love, tomorrow the world" and so on... the quality of the songs is great and despite a few good songs getting passed over i would recommend this to someone as an introduction into one of the greatest and most underappreciated bands ever. also if you really like the ramones you should check out "End of the Century" on DVD

4 out of 5 stars minus a star because i personally would recommend buying ALL of the albums.......2006-11-17

i, sadly used to be one of those stupid kids who shyed away from The Ramones(about a year ago...im young) because i wasn't really much of a hardcore fan of blitzkrieg bop or i wanna be sedated and thats all you heard when you heard the Ramones...maybe a rocket to russia track here and there, but mostly, it was one of those bands that i mistakenly clumped in with the sex pistols(a mediocre band)

i could slap myself then. The Ramones are one of the only punk bands to give me the "awe" goosebumps. I mean along with the Damned, i think the Ramones are the co-kings of the 77 punk thing as far as i can tell. this band itself is a really unique band ....joey is the rather unique cartoonish looking vocalist..johnny is the one who is kinda of like the father figure..silent in voice, but always showing how punk was supposed to be with his unique political views and killer guitar...dee dee was the most street punk of the group.

yeah to newcomers, id recommend this, but id really recommend you start with the early albums and then work your way up...please dont throw them by the wayside simply because "i wanna be sedated" and "blitzkrieg bop" are overplayed. dont worship bands that march like sheep towards every scene following dead kennedys wannabe band and listen to one of the the best. the innovaters!!

Slightly less primitive than the Ramones' debut, Leave Home is somehow more melodic, poppier, and heavier than its predecessor. "Glad to See You Go" name-drops "the passion" of Charles Manson, while the terrific "Commando" ("First rule is the laws of Germany / Second rule is be nice to mommy") brings to mind a funnier MC5. But "Oh, Oh, I Love Her So" is pure classic pop--metallic bubblegum and their first foray into the Beach Boys-inspired harmonies that would be used to greater effect on Rocket to Russia. The "bruddahs" even do a speeded-up version of "California Sun" to drive the point home. "Pinhead" gave birth to the "Gabba! Gabba! Hey!" rallying cry. This splendid remastered reissue includes the original artwork, superior sound, and excellent liner notes by heavy-metal Ph.D. Dr. Donna Gaines. Also included is the band's August 1976 L.A. debut show at the Roxy Theater. Leave Home is the album that clued in a lot of people that this band was more than a novelty. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars RAMONES AT THEIR BEST.......2006-12-01

This is the best album by the Ramones. Followed by Road to Ruin, Rocket to Russia, and then "Ramones". That's just my opinion."Swallow my Pride" is one of their greatest songs. Maybe it's just my ear. "Winter is here and it's going on two years" tells how Joey was so frustrated without success. Yah, I read their book. Anyway, get this album and say goodbye to the Beatles.

5 out of 5 stars 5th Rule is: This 1-2 punch will Knock You Out........2006-08-26

As years pass, it will only become more apparent that the Ramones produced some of our most beloved rock songs. Few lyrics and fewer chords somehow found a way to establish so much.

The 2nd in the great trio of Ramones titles from 1976-77, 'Leave Home' has been combined with a memorable 1976 west-coast gig. The 1-2 punch will simply knock you out.

*Glad to See You Go*, *Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment*, *Suzy Is a Headbanger*, *Pinhead* and *Commando* will all have you chanting and dancing along. *Oh Oh I Love Her So* succeeds where others have not dared to tread - and yes, some of us do remember similar moments in our young, Queens, New York lives.

After getting in the mood, what better way to wrap up this experience but with a thunderous 16-track live performance where we can hear a virtual greatest hits of their early material. I was floored by the [musical & historical] weight of this disc, and I have little doubt that you will as well.

Let's get it started ... 1-2-3-4 !!!

5 out of 5 stars The Bonus Material Alone!.......2006-07-15

This is the greatest reissue of a CD in music history. Not only was it a great Ramones album, but Rhino Records added practically an entire concert. 16 live tracks of some of the greatest Ramones songs ever. So you can listen to the great tracks on the original recording like "Commando" and "California Sun," and then hear "Judy is a Punk" and "Blitzkrieg Bop" live. Incredible! All Ramones fans should have this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Could they possibly improve over their debut?.......2006-01-30

The punk landscape is littered with bands who were capable of blowing one load and one load only. The Sex Pistols, The New York Dolls, Richard Hell, Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers come to mind quickly and I'm sure that if I give that notion any more thought I'll be able to double that number up in no time flat.

While these bands were busy dissapering from the scene, The Ramones were busy crafting their second masterpiece, one that wouldn't even crack the Billboard 100 in the U.S. but would prove to be part of rock's glorious pantheon.

This CD contains what is perhaps the single best romantic song ever written about American teenagers living in the city - "Oh Oh I Love Her So" and a nod to The Beatles "You're Gonna Kill That Girl". And that's only two great songs out of 15.

This particular reissue sound luscious and I'm especially thankful for the number of live cuts included. Rhino does it right again.

5 out of 5 stars Their best album and their best reissue.......2005-10-08

This is THE album to have by the Ramones. No, it doesn't have either of their biggest hits (Blitzkreig Bop - although there is a great live version on this CD - and I Wanna Be Sedated), but what Leave Home does have is the best all around collection of catchy, punchy, funny, heartfelt rockers that the Ramones ever released. And unlike their debut, this album has excellent production values - double tracked guitars and a bunch of well placed tamborine hits make such a difference!

There are many favorites on this one ... for example: Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment, I Remember You (recently played live in tribute by U2), What's Your Game, and my favorite Ramones song, Swallow My Pride. For completeness and historical accuracy, it also features the once-controversial (but also somewhat tepid) track, Carbona Not Glue.

What sets this CD apart from 99.999999% of all reissues out there is the inclusion of a FULL FREAKIN' LIVE SET FROM L.A.1976!!!!!!!!!!!! !!! Added to a first rate sophomore LP from the boys, we lucky CD-agers get to hear a phenomenal live recording of their show at the ROXY, 8/12/76. I was seven years old, and no, I was not there. In any case, this is top notch live rockin' from the masters in their early days.

This album would make an ideal stocking stuffer.

Okay, so maybe about thirty songs are left out. Who cares? This is the best compilation of the best Ramones tunes done EVER. They embodied the assault against early 70s hippiedom leftovers. They played as loudly as quickly as possible. They didn't mind "yeah, yeah, yeah," or "oh, baby," or "gabba gabba hey". They rocked. Most everyone else didn't. Forget the pretentious liner notes that come with this. Put it in your cd player and crank this baby up!

As good as this is, it is missing some stuff. First of all, it only has 3 songs from the S/T record. I wish they'd included Judy Is A Punk or Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue or 53rd and 3rd. That would've been great.
But all in all, this is a great CD.

RAMONES MANIA means well, but it's biggest flaw is that it's not ALL THE STUFF (AND MORE), VOL.'S 1 and 2. Granted, thirty selections on one disc that's 76 minutes long is nothin' to sneeze at, but too many late entry numbers lack the high energy and dumb fun lyrics of the first few indispensable elpees (of which STUFF 1 and 2 are entirely comprised). Next to expected bubble-rock class-sicks BLITZGRIEG BOP, TEENAGE LOBOTOMY, SHEENA IS A ROCKER, I WANNA BE SEDATED, and ROCKAWAY BEACH, latter day efforts HOWLIN' AT THE MOON (SHA-LA-LA) and ANIMAL BOY run outta gas fast. At least ROCK 'N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL and DO YOU REMEMBER ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO? are joyfully nostalgic excursions, and Joey Ramones' earnest take on the 1910 Fruitgum Company's INDIAN GIVER is a thing of rare beauty. But trust me: a quick trip on their ROCKET TO RUSSIA is much better than HOWLIN' AT THE MOON (SHA-LA-LA). So, Hey! Ho!! Let's Go!!! RATING: THREE GABBA GABBA HEYS

"They'll get better," said Keith Richards of punk musicians in 1977. "You can't help but get better." And Road to Ruin is the album that demonstrated the Ramones had gotten "better" at being musicians, if not at becoming stars. "I Just Want to Have Something to Do" is quite simply one of the greatest opening tracks on any rock album, ever. For the first time, Johnny actually throws in pyrotechnics that go beyond basic power chords. "I Don't Want You" is riff-driven punk rock, while "I Wanna Be Sedated" and "She's the One" are some of their best pop-punk. But Road to Ruin also breaks some stylistic barriers. "Don't Come Close" is almost country & western and "Questioningly" is a simple ballad. A cover of the Searchers' "Needles & Pins" is downright reverent, though it's sadder than the original. The superbly remastered Rhino reissue of what was arguably their last great album includes original artwork, liner notes by Punk! magazine's Legs McNeil, and the band's tracks from the Rock 'N' Roll High School soundtrack--meaning the title track as produced by Ed Stasium as opposed to Phil Spector. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars If you don't like the Ramones..........2007-05-02

If you don't like the Ramones, you don't like rock and roll. I don't know how else to say it. If you are tired, sad, or having trouble getting started in the morning, put this cd in and get going to a better, brighter, more blitzkreig-y kind of day. This was my introduction to the band and still my favorite, although the debut is fantastic as well. It's A Long Way Back, I Just Want To Have Something To Do, I Wanna Be Sedated, the list just goes on and on...all killer stuff. Even though some of the hardcore fans decried the 'ballads,' (let's face it, latter day Aerosmith drivel these ballads ain't - thank God), they are just being purists. Every single song on here is great and that's something very few bands can say about any one of their records.
The Ramones took the pop formula and crushed it with Johnny's down strokes and the sneering nasal charm of Joey's impassioned vocals. Honestly, if you don't like this band, I don't value your musical opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Road To Ruin.......2007-04-28

The Ramones-Road To Ruin *****

Road To Ruin was an album title that totaly reflected none of the music. It maybe the most irrelavent album title in all of history in once since and dead on in another. Road To Ruin is actually one of The Ramones very best albums. I hold it higher then the legendary debut, and think Rocket To Russia may be the only other album better then this. But at this point the boys had given up on themselves. They had realized they were never going to be mega stars at this point and were never going to be the next The Beatles like they had started out to be, so their metality was that they were ineveitably on the road to ruin if you will, and The Ramones were pissed off about it. Road To Ruin was a major step forward for the band as well as a massive change both metaly and phisicaly. Tommy had left the band to become a full time producer and enginer and the band recruted Marky which helped to make the sound more aggresive. The band grew musicaly and creativley. They were making more then just three chord songs here, and the songs were no longer "we're gonna find happiness amongst the choas." Oh no, The Ramones were angry and ready to let the world have it which is what makes this album so beautiful because Joey was really heated. This album also showed the experimental side The Ramones that the world had never ever seen before.

'I Just Want To Have Something To Do' opens the albums feriously and with sophistication. This song showed show much growth by the band from their previous album Rocket To Russia as far as musicianship, lyrics, and arrangement are concerned. One of the better songs the band ever wrote, and possible the best on Road To Ruin. 'I Wanted Everything' is an aggressive rant about wanting it all...fame, fourtune, millions of fans, and notatriety all things the band would atane after their retierment but at the time it seemed like it would never happen. 'I Wanted Everything' is unlike anything the band had previously released. 'Dont Come Close' caused a lot of contraversy upon release of this album. Many fans, critics, and supporters of the band wrote it and 'Questioningly' of as country western songs but anyone who listens to the songs can tell that it is just not the case. 'Dont Come Close' is so signature Ramones its not even funny. The song comes acrossed on first listen as a shock but upon inspection it is just like a million other 1960's pop songs which is what the band set out to make songs as, so it fits in perfect for the band. The acoustic guitars are a nice change of pace for an album that is so angry. 'I Dont Want You' is a cry for desperation in anger and pain. It is 'I Just Want To Have Something To Do' continued musicaly. The song hits you like bricks in the chest and doesnt appologise, it shows you the band means buisness here. It helps to make Road To Ruin the bands version of The Beatles album Help! 'Needles And Pins is an excellent cover that completly owns the original. Never has suicide sounded so....well not bad. The Searchers did the original and it was good but faulters in comparison to The Ramones cover. 'Im Against It' maybe the angriest song the band ever recorded. The verses to the songs are written light hartedly in humor as the band has been known for but then the chorus kicks in and anyone who has heard Joey sing the legendary "Im Against It" chorus knows the man is pissed about something. You can feel the conviction in the song and the emotion behind it. If you were to make a list of the three greatest Ramone songs ever recorded then 'I Wanna Be Sedated' would have to be included. The bands most popular song next to 'Blitzkrieg Bop' and is maybe the only Ramones song to ever get regular radio play, It is still played to this day. Rumor has it the song was written after Joey was burned before a show and had to be taken to the hospital but he knew the band had a whole leg left on their tour so he said "Put me in a wheel chair get me on a plain before I go insane" and the song was written right after that. Classic. 'Go Mental' is anthemic. The chorus is so believable and convincing. While it isnt the strongest song on the album you wanna sing with it every time it plays. Johnny also plays some of the best guitar of his career on this song as well. 'Questioningly' is the other country western song mentioned earlier. Its not country, sorry but its not. Because Whiskey is mentioned and slide guitar is played someone decided The Ramones went George Jones. This is a nice love song while not a 1960's pop song like 'Dont Come Close' it is still a really good love song amongst some much frustration. 'Shes The One' is just killer. It sounds as if the band finished recording and said "oh no we need a pop song," but it doesnt matter because it is one of the best songs on the album and totally ture blue Ramones. Classic, the song is just so killer. 'Bad Brain' is a return to the more punk sounding song. Yet another song about insanity which as well all know is a very popular subject in the Ramones cannon. It is rumoured that the hardcore/punk band Bad Brains actually got their name from this song, they were going by another name at the time this was released and decided to change. Even if that is not whole truth, the song is still great with out the legend. 'Its A Long Way Back' is a three line rant written by Dee Dee about Germany where he was born. It has really good production and sounds great but does not really offer much to the listener, Im a personal fan of the song but think 'Bad Brain' should have close the record. Still a decent finish to the album.

Depending on what version of the album you buy there are five bonus tracks at the end of the reissued version. 'I Want You Around' which is a nice pop song from the band and classic, but this is an alternate version. Also included is an alternate version of 'Rock N' Roll Radio' which is one of the bands all time best songs and this version is no different the only alteration is that it does not include the radio intro. A live medly of 'Blitzkrieg Bop/Teenage Labotomy/California Sun/Pinhead/Shes The One' is included here which was originaly on the Rock N' Roll Highschool album. 'Come Back, She Cried A.K.A. I Walk Out (Demo)' is also included and its really good. 'Yea, Yea' is another demo track and is really cool, sort of like 'Shes The One.'

With or without the bonus tracks Road To Ruin is an excellent album. Its one of The Ramones very best albums if not their best. One of the finest punk albums as well as rock n' roll albums of all time. Road To Ruin was a rare moment in Ramones history that no one should miss out on. It is an incredible album that should be included in everyones collection. I have never met a person to not like The Ramones, the punk label sometimes scares some away but with a chance and a listen you will see that The Ramones are just a tougher version of The Beatles.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best.......2006-10-22

This is a good album, but not their best. If you're new to the Ramones, start with an anthology or with one of their excellent first three albums: The Ramones, Leave Home, or Rocket to Russia. Sadly, the Ramones started going downhill with this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Ramones Best Album Ever!.......2005-12-31

When I'm elected President of the United States, my first act will be to provide every American with a copy of "Road To Ruin." Even an old aficionado of hippy music like me understands that the Ramones are one of America's great rock and roll treasures. In fact, they were the last truly great American rock band. This is the album to hear if you doubt my words. Put this one in your CD player and turn it way up. You'll soon forget about death metal, grunge, rap and all that other crap that kids listen to these days. You'll be taken back to the fun and innocence of the mid-sixties reinvented into slamming, rocking anthems for more modern times. Road to Ruin combines some of the Ramones very best rockers with three very well-done ballads, including an excellent remake of "Needles And Pins" by The Searchers. The sound quality of this album is superb and I believe there are some studio musicians at work in the background. My opinion of the Ramones recorded output is that there were a few great songs on every album, which added up to an impressive catalog overall, but Road To Ruin is the only one that kills it from beginning to end. It's hard to believe that three of the Ramones are gone already. They named a street in New York City for Joey Ramone. The least you can do is buy a copy of Road To Ruin in his honor. (Don't wait for me to be elected President.)

5 out of 5 stars The Ramones At Their Best.......2005-12-06

Much like The Clash's London Calling, Road To Ruin is The Ramones' standout album and boasts some of their biggest hits. Road To Ruin showcases the band at the peak of their 20-year career, way back in 1977. The Ramones' fourth release contains hits such as "She's The One" and the infamous "I Wanna Be Sedated", and I'm happy to report that there are absolutely no filler tracks on this record, which is rare for an album that has 17 songs on it.

It's probably a waste of time, but being the obsessive compulsive person that I am, I feel the need to pinpoint the band's talent. From Dee Dee's hypnotic basslines and poignant lyrics, to Joey Ramone's sour yet irresistable vocal delivery, to Tommy, the backbone of the band, Road To Ruin has no weak spots. (And don't even let me get started with the guitar...I swear, Johnny Ramone could do more with 3 or 4 chords than anyone of his time.)

The Ramones were one of the greatest and most influential bands ever, and although almost none of their tracks were over 2 and a half minutes long, every one of their songs were catchy, upbeat, well-structured, and most importantly, fun to listen to. Pick up Road To Ruin now!

When the Ramones left the confines of CBGB's in 1976--where they had developed their earmark three-chord speed delivery--and took the show on the road to England, they set the punk-rock juggernaut rolling. It can't be stressed enough how influential these boys from Forest Hills, Queens, were on Britain's emerging punk-rock scene, but a few seconds into It's Alive and it's easy to tell why. It's Alive captures the phenomena of the Ramones at their peak and in their element: live and sweaty.

You've barely blinked before you realize that the first half-dozen songs have already raced past, their backdraft sucking the oxygen out of your lungs. "Rockaway Beach," "Teenage Lobotomy," "Blitzkrieg Bop," and "I Wanna Be Well" practically melt together in a three-chord melange, Tommy never letting up on the frantic beat and Joey pausing barely long enough to breathlessly shout, "Onetwothreefour!" before launching into the next set. The longest song here clocks in well short of three minutes, and many are hardly longer than one. Twenty-eight songs clock in under 48 minutes. Talk about a land-speed record. No subtleties of production or tweaking are needed here to capture the Ramones' live sound. Plug 'em in, turn everything up to 10, and let it rip. The sound of the manic crowd is practically organic. It's Alive is not just the best Ramones album, it is easily the best live punk-rock album of all time, and perhaps one of the best live albums ever set to wax. --Tod Nelson

There was an old saying, "Before The Ramones,There Was Nothing" well, Im 43yrs. old now,and I have learned that there is nothing, AFTER, the Ramones either.GOD I miss these guys so much it hurts.Cant wait to see you guys on the other side. Till then...1,2,3,4!!!!HEY HO LETS GO!!!

5 out of 5 stars This Album Kicks Ass.......2007-02-01

The Ramones in England. They're tight, they're fast and as usual, they don't spend time talking..They just perform. Sound quality is good also.

5 out of 5 stars pure power.......2007-01-25

Many of the other reviews have been more succinct or full of the accurate glowing praise. I want to be careful with my use of platitudes. If you don't get the Ramones, this won't necessarily change your mind. BUT, if you like the Ramones or have ever been to one of their concerts, you know what I mean. The energy is palpable and intense. Listening to this set reminds me of the 3 concerts I was lucky to witness. If you are a fan of the band and never got to experience a show (you have my pity), this is as close as you can ever get. Growing up I heard that Grateful Dead shows were the live shows to experience. While I thoroughly appreciated my one and only dead experience, I would have to differ. Ramones concerts were like a combination of a religious experience and sex, all at the same time. The set, despite being around 30 years old has aged beautifully. Don't forget to turn your amplifier up. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Lively and energetic, makes you really happy!.......2007-01-07

This gotta be the best Ramones live album!!!! It opens with Johnny hit a code and Dee Dee already says "One, two...." but somehow Joey stopped everything and say, "Hey! We are the Ramones and this one's called Rockaway Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeach!!" and just makes you have a huge smile on your face. This album is so lively and energetic, it makes you forget about all the bad things happened that day. So I listen to this when coming back from work a lot becuase anything happened that day at work can be washed away and makes me happy!

5 out of 5 stars Gabba Gabba Hey!.......2007-01-05

Loved this album since day one. If you like the Ramones or never heard of them this is a must have. Will make you want to go out and have a blast. You will be a pinhead no more!

Given their irreverent sensibilities, it's almost ironic to lionize the comic deconstruction of ossified rock history that was the Ramones' stock in trade, or note the decades of punk and alt.rock that remain their legacy. Instead, this collection smartly recasts the punk pioneers as literal pulp culture icons via its EC Comics-inspired packaging and the brilliantly executed comic book history of the band that accompanies it. Musically, the set's first three discs offer up 85 highlights of the band's recording career, personally compiled by founder/guitarist Johnny Ramone and seasoned with rarities like the demo for "Slug," the UK B-side "I Don't Want to Live This Life," and the single mixes of "Sheena.." and others. Its accompanying Lifestyles of the Ramones documentary DVD intersperses 14 videos with the often bittersweet recollections of the band and key family members, as well as such notables as Sire's Seymour Stein, Talking Head Tina Weymouth and producer Ed Stasium; another bonus six clips (including covers of the Who's "Substitute" and the '60s' "Spiderman" theme) round out that history. But it's the dizzying visual eclecticism of the included graphic history (executed in color b&w and 3-D by 25 top comic artists including Matt Groening, Zippy creator Bill Griffith, Mad magazine vet Sergio Argones, bootleg cover legend William Stout and Love and Rockets' Xaime Hernandez) that becomes the set's unusual focal point, a loving visual evocation of both their infectious music and shrewd, if willfully low-brow public persona. -- Jerry McCulley

Album Description

The supreme godfathers of punk-face it, they were on their third album before the Sex Pistols even broke-are true American originals, and their sensational end-of-the-century juggernaut is chronicled as never before in this career-spanning collection. Reducing and scrambling multiple strains of early rock 'n' roll and pop into a signature chainsaw of sound, the Ramones' loud, fast, and hard legacy rocketed out of NYC's CBGB in the early '70s and changed the face of modern music. Johnny Ramone, before his 2004 passing, oversaw the compilation of this first-ever Ramones blitzkrieg box for Rhino.

4 out of 5 stars Don't buy it just for the DVD..........2007-06-16

...because it's not remastered. The picture and sound are both horrible. There's interview clips of Joey that are also in "End of The Century" that are crisp and clear in EOTC and fuzzy and washed out here. Not surprising since Johnny Ramone had a lot to do with this project. The packaging is top notch, though, and of course the music is wonderful.

Although there are many different and diverse re-packaging of the Ramones Catalogue and Greatest Hits, This one, assembled by the Late Johnny Ramone, is one of the most fun. In addition to the finest and fastest music on the planet , you get a DVD of videos and a 3D comix w/Glasses!
This is a great gift for anyone in the family. My family, which has very diverse musical tastes, from Rock to Rap, can always agree to listen to the Ramones. Great Car tunes to sing along with.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Boxed Sets Ever........2007-01-07

This boxed set is, in a word, incredible. Despite not being particularly impressive songwriters or instrumentalists, The Ramones are still one of the most important bands in the history of rock music. Along with British counterparts The Clash and The Sex Pistols, the Queens quintet spearheaded the punk movement of the late 1970s'. Though lineups changed and personal conflict ocassionally affected their artistic abilities, The Ramones' impact still rings true today.

The 85 song, three disc (and bonus dvd) boxed set "Weird Tales Of The Ramones" is ample proof of how important they were. Songs like "Blitzkreig Bop", "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" and "I Wanna Be Sedated" defined what punk rock music went. In addition to their biggest hits, there's some very underrated album cuts that deserve the attention of beginning fans. Hardcore fans will be attracted to sound quality, which makes these songs sound new again.

The comic book structured liner notes are a visual thrill. Very informative, quirky and very funny. This is a truly great compilation of a truly great band.

5 out of 5 stars Very excellent collection of the Ramones with a Comic twist.......2006-12-21

This is a must have for any fan of the ramones and punk in general. Sure, they have released these songs many of times in multiple greatest hits packages, but never together with a dvd and an excellent comic book drawn by some of the best artists in their genre (matt greoning, sergio aragnoes, ect...) There are 85 tracks and 18 videos over 3 cd's and 1 dvd. This also has a post card, and 3-d glasses to view a section done in 3-D art. Very cool. The DVD of "Lifestyles of the Ramones" is the first time this is available on DVD, plus they add the videos left off from original VHS release, very cool.
The price this is going for is almost a steel. This is well worth picking up for an stand alone greatest hits, one stop shop for a first time fan, or the pinicle of a collectors pile. Pick this up, you will not be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Hey Ho, Let's Go.......2006-06-23

One of my biggest regrets is that I never saw the Ramones live. That I didn't recognize their amazing work was not because I was too young--in fact I was in my 20's--but rather because I, like most everyone in the 70's, was rock-n-roll shanghai'd by the mellow sounds of Linda Ronstadt, the Doobie Brothers, the Eagles, and other lethargic slicksters. It wasn't that I wasn't exposed to them; it's just that I dismissed them hastily as another "oldies" band like Sha-Na-Na, albeit with a harder edge. How could I have been so blind? At their core, the Ramones brought fast-tempo back to rock-n-roll---rapid fire 1/16th notes not heard since At The Hop, Great Balls of Fire, or Lucille. To that, they married a Warhol-esque world view and a Beach Boys liturgy of adolescent fun. The result was a reinvention of everything that made rock and roll great, and it was only a matter of time before anyone who loves it would discover the best band since The Beatles, The Kinks and The Rolling Stones.
