Set the table, open the wine, light some candles. Slip on this disc. Let the gentle sounds of André Rieu's slippery fiddle and fur-tipped orchestra lull you with classical music's most memorable soothers, from "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Plasir D'Amour" to the largo from Dvorák's New World Symphony and Nino Rota's "A Time for Us," which opens and closes the collection. Lightweight stuff, yes, but ingenuously arranged and performed, and the ribbon of reverb that surrounds the orchestra will please erstwhile Mantovani fans. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars Romantic Moments.... Andre Rieu.......2007-02-24

Love this music & Andre Rieu is popular with not only my husband & myself but with our children & parents. It's fun & a wonderful way to introduce the classics to any & all lovers of music.

5 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu - Romantic Moments.......2006-08-31

Oh, So beautiful---- every track!!!!! My personal favorite has to be the soothing SERENATA. So, get comfy, put on the headphones so you won't miss a single note...... Andre Rieu's violin is magical!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Decent playing, lousy arrangements.......2005-11-11

Well, apparently I'm in the minority, but I found this CD disappointing. I bought it because I fell in love with "Song to the Moon" when I heard it on the radio, but this track and possibly the "Londonderry Air" are the only ones worth listening to. Although the melodies chosen for this album are indeed beautiful, the arrangements (Rieu's own) are poorly done. I would much more highly recommend Joshua Bell's Romance of the Violin, which has a similar theme, albeit restricted to classical tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the hype, this is great music.......2005-08-04

Try not to think about the cheesy "Andre Rieu in Tuscany" PBS special. This is a very pleasing program of selections of great romantic melodies, beautifully arranged. Few people are going to purchase a CD of Dvorak's Rusalka just to hear "Song to the Moon" so this is the place to hear it. And it's even better on Rieu's violin than in the original vocal version. Rieu plays perfectly in tune (not always easy in the higher registers of the violin) and has exquisite phrasing that brings out the musicality of even the most over-recorded selections.

Rhieu's arrangements (with Jo Huijts) have hints of "beautiful music" (think Ray Coniff) but only hints, and the result is very tasteful. For example, the piano obligato under the strings on "O mio babbino caro" makes you wish that Puccini had thought of that.

This is a wonderful album to listen to while relaxing and would make a great gift for someone who appreciates classical music but doesn't have specific preferences.

5 out of 5 stars Music That Will Touch Your Heart.......2004-12-05

This one is one of my favorites of Andre Rieu. It's very romantic. It reminded me of my honeymoon in Vienna. I like to play it at home a lot. It lifts the spirit and touches the heart. Made me cry one time.

3 out of 5 stars Judy Garland Please!.......2007-01-21

It was said that if Judy Garland had lived the role would have been hers - if you could gotten her on the set every day. But there was no doubt that she would have been the perfect age for the part and that her voice even while she was struggling in the late 60's would have been anything but better than Lucy's. If only....

2 out of 5 stars Bad Casting/Poor recording.......2006-11-03

The soundtrack to jerry Herman's Mame with Lucille Ball, Bea Arthur and Robert Preston is a recording for hard core Mame Fans only, and even they have to bite down hard to make it pallatable. Primarily due to the exceedingly poor soundtrack quality, this soundtrack is one of the poorest recordings I have ever heard! Lucille Ball is totally miscast as Mame, although she try's very hard. Beatrice Arthur is wonderful as on the B'way cast album w/ Angela Landsburry. Robert Preston is the one presence I actually had to have the disc for. I may copy them to another disc, so I don't have to put up with the rest of this dreadful recording, so full of noise you're looking for the noise reduction button!!!Not for the timid!

5 out of 5 stars Lucy you did a wonderful job !!!!!.......2006-01-22

Lucille Ball, gave it her best shot and I think she Sang, and Danced wonderful. Id rather hear Lucy !!! than that LOUD british singer Angela Lansbury, she seemend to screaming most of her songs in her OBC !! Lucy was more beliveble in her singing, So move out of the way Angela Lucille Ball is Mame !!!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing,but worth a listen.......2006-01-11

The main reason for buying this CD is to hear Jerry Herman's lovely score. It's always worth listening to,but this version is
like the movie itself-a major disappointment. There are a few
good things on the disc-the title track,Robert Preston,Beatrice
Arthur, and Jane Connell. But the rest of the cast simply can't
sing, and Fred Werner's musical direction is mediocre at best.
And the worst thing of all is Lucille Ball.Sure, she tries hard, but
let's face it-as "I Love Lucy" proved,she simply was not a musical comedy performer(and I'm a Lucy fan!)There is no doubt
that Angela Lansbury should have played Mame, but just as they
did with "My Fair Lady" and Julie Andrews,Warner Brothers didn't
consider her a big enough name for the box office.Overall, this is an acceptable soundtrack, but if you want the best "Mame"
album, get the Broadway cast recording instead.

3 out of 5 stars Three stars for third-rate.......2005-12-25

This 1974 disaster all but ended Auntie Mame's career -- and Lucille Ball's. Though to get a full scope of the bad you must see the movie if you dare this soundtrack gives broad hints. If Lucy was photographed through gauze some of her vocals (like the notorious solo duet leading off "If He Walked Into My Life") sound as though she was recorded through it. Compounding the travesty the arranger Ralph Burns turned the grande dame of Beekman Place into a singing tart, with keeyute shticks that suggest less a musical triumph than a musical sitcom. Not everyone suffers and dies; Robert Preston is the apex of mellow crooning the film's one new tune, "Loving You", which starts off hauntingly then swoons to Lucy's gauze; and there is no stopping the trouper in Bea Arthur. But casting Lucy was a mistake, a mistake compounded by a tone-deaf production. My Mame is still Angela Lansbury's, and Goddard Lieberson's.

P. S. The Warner Music folks must have laughed when they turned this album into a limited-edition price gouge. There is no difference between the current CD and the LP; the timings on Rhino Handmade's site are identical to the dust jacket's. Whoever said "A fool and his money are easily parted" was thinking record collectors.

A brief glance at the packaging for this recording might make you think New Age, and indeed this label normally offers recordings in that vein. The disc's cover tells nothing about the music inside--all we see are the ruins of an ancient abbey, the moon in the sky on the front, the sun on the back. But wait. If you get far enough to listen to the recording, you'll find one of the most beautiful and beautifully programmed choral recordings in the catalog. The compositions, organized into the categories "Music of the Morning Rite" and "Music of the Evening Rite," are mostly from 16th- century composers--Byrd, Taverner, Sheppard, White--with a few Gregorian chants and a gorgeous rendition of the 20th-century motet by Duruflé, "Ubi caritas." Conductor/choral music legend John Rutter has assembled a program that's both uplifting and restful; the performance is faultless. One could only complain about the short (39 and a half minutes) playing time. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Choral work at it's finest........2007-06-03

I really enjoyed this work. I was first introduced to this title through American Gramophone's website and was also my first introduction in the works of John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers. You do not have be religious to enjoy this work. I find the music uplifting and very sublime. I have listened to it many times, and I find that my favorite period to play it is in the morning hours. .

I have since purchased many other Rutter titles including "Images of Christ", and more recently "Lighten our Darkness"

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-05-02

13 years ago, I had the tape of brother sun, sister moon and as a teenager and I would play it every night as I slept, I loved it. I dont know what happened to it and I have ever sence been looking for it, and I just baught the CD and am so excited.

5 out of 5 stars Light and shadows.......2003-07-29

Recorded in the Great Hall of University College School, London, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a true masterpiece in 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' in 1988. The title derives from a famous prayer by St. Francis of Assisi, and is inspired by liturgical music from (or derivative of) the Middle Ages and Renaissance polyphony and Gregorian chant. The music is meditative, uplifting, and elegant in simplicity and stunning vocal quality.

--Brother Sun--
The first half of the disc is largely composed of pieces from the liturgical Morning Prayer cycle, concentrating on texts from Easter, the most important of Christian days. From the Alleluia to the Acclamations and Surrexit Christus Hodie (Christ is risen today), the flow from Gregorian Chant to compositions by Byrd, Taverner and Palestrina (giants of this type of music) in increasing energy and glory, as befits both a Morning service (time to wake up!) as well as a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Perhaps of particular note here is the cantoring of bass Gerald Finley in the Easter Acclamations.

--Sister Moon--
The second half of the disc concentrates on music of the evening; in particular, the Compline service, a service of unwinding and sombre meditation with which monastic communities conclude their days of work and worship. Many churches have reincorporated Compline into a regular cycle of services; some have even done so as a result of exposure to this recording. The music here is softer and less energetic than that of Morning prayer. This includes music from Whyte and Sheppard (also masters of the Medieval-to-Renaissance liturgical polyphony) as well as a brilliant motet by twentieth century composer Duruflé for the Ubi Caritas.

--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words, in both Latin and English, for each of the pieces recorded here. It has an excerpt from a prayer by St. Francis, and a basic introduction to the music relating it historically and liturgically. One thing conspicuously missing is any biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the basic listing of singers.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. For this particular recording, the choir consisted of eleven sopranos, six altos, six tenors, and six basses.

4 out of 5 stars Cambridge Singers = Quality.......2002-05-23

I do love this cd, but tend to play certain tracks as my first love is chant. I play the Victimae Paschali Laudes in the car and sing along - it is so very beautiful that this rendition of this Easter Chant is worth purchasing this cd alone. I love that one track so much, my only criticism of the cd is that I wish they'd centered the entire cd on chant - and I hope they will do one like that in the future because the quality of the voices is stunning.

5 out of 5 stars American Gramaphone, please reissue this title........2000-03-30

I originally obtained this CD through Minnesota Public Radio. The first time I listened to the Ubi Caritus, I was moved to tears. The CD became my favorite to play at Christmas and other times. I gave the CD to a friend who has moved to Oregon, deeply regret that it is no longer in production.

John Rutter trains his singers to sing without vibrato, and blends their voices with such balance that they come together as a single instrument. The selection on this CD is perfect to demonstrate the clarity and richness of this ensemble. If American Gramaphone does reissue this title, I will be first in line to purchase it.

Album Description

Romantic world-fusion music featuring Celtic harp and flutes. With influences and instruments from the middle east, India and Africa

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars quiet, beautiful, many moods.......2005-01-25

This disc is principally harp and flute playing the artists' own compositions. It features a variety of moods, which I find by turns entertaining and frustrating depending on what I'm doing when I listen. There's a new agey spacey piece, middle-eastern and oriental influences, celtic stuff, kinda what you'd expect. It's all well played and well recorded. I bought this disc directly from David Michael, who was playing solo harp for anybody who wanted to listen on a ferryboat crossing Puget Sound one day. I liked it well enough to find myself on Amazon checking to see if there was more.

5 out of 5 stars World Fusion Music showcasing the harp and flute........2004-06-23

I've received this as a gift from my thoughtful sister Mimi for a special occassion.. Delightful, upbeat, joyous sounds including (but not limited to)tabla, esraj, nylon and steel guitars and the main players of various world flutes and celtic harp. There is even the bouzouki! The liner notes remark: Romantic World Fusion Music.I'm enraptured as I love pan flute, tabla as well as various harp. I never thought I would find them on the same cd. If you like upbeat new age, not monotonous but lyrical, then this is Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2000-12-09

I first heard one of the tracks on this CD on a National Public Radio show called Echoes. From the first moment I was eager to buy a copy for my own music collection. -- Since that time, I have given several copies as gifts, and received accolades for my thoughtfulness each and every time. -- The music is just so gorgeous that it resonates with you. I found myself listening to it while I put my baby to sleep, while I cook, in the car, in the bath, after a long day...It always rejuvenates me. My husband AND my mother both love it, too. -- It is the best $15 I have spent on music in a long, long while. Get it. You won't regret it.

Enclosure 2, all four cds, is curated as a sprawling notebook filled with sounds and speech instead of sketches and words. Of any Partch recording extant, it gives the best picture of the man--as the curmudgeonly, extremely innovative misanthrope that he was, as the composer who was impossibly unlike anyone else before or since. The essence of Partch's music reflects the history of the world--from his particular perspective--the imaginings of ancient Greece to the influence of Chinese musical melodrama, all propelled by homemade instruments based on a 43-tone scale named things like the "Kithara" and the "Boo." These recordings also give the best sense of his philosophy of language in music. Lamenting the whole time how text in music had become detached from the language of everyday life, Partch ran music alongside newsboys' cries and hobos' diaries, following the forms, cadence, and dynamics of speech, rather than the other way around. From his juvenilia (a wonderful song he wrote at 18) to a 45-minute segment of his wake in 1974, the first steps towards exploring Partch's sparkling works fully are made here. --Robin Edgerton

    Album Description

It has been said that Philip Glass is the `Godfather of Trance' and evidence of that is found in the remixes that a number of young producers/musicians began sending to Orange Mountain Music as early as 2002. These unsolicitated mixes became the genesis for Glasscuts, Philip Glass Remixed (release date Sept 2005). This CD presents a very diverse program without any one dominant style. The artists are Androoval from Uruguay, Robert Bell from Australia, Brian Bender from the US, Hector Castillo from Venezuela, Taylor Dupree from the US, Sebastian Escofet from Argentina, impLOG, from the US, Woody McBride DJ ESP from the US, Marcos Romero from Uruguay, Kate Simko from the US, Dietrich Schoenemann from the US, Luciano Supervielle from Uruguay and Dave Wesley from the US.

We invite you to immerse yourself in Glasscuts, Philip Glass Remixed with open ears to experience a Glass that is reminiscent of the past, but with an adventurous contemporary twist.

1 out of 5 stars This is just awful - I was suckered by the excellence Reich Remixed.......2006-07-23

I just assumed that this would be as equally wonderful, and that Glass' music would be even more translatable into the "trance" genre, or whatever the kids are calling it nowadays.

Sadly, it seems that this was done by junior high kids with a computer and Acid Foundry or whatever that cheap software is.

No creativity, and, oddly enough, not even any real sense of Glass' music still being in the "remix".

I am a huge fan of Glass; I am not a fan of this kind of music, but since I am also a fan of Reich and since, to my total surprise, I am quite enthralled by the Reich Remixed CD, I figured I really needed to give this CD a shot.

What a waste. This is totally amateur, but without the occasional genius that some amateur can manage. Strictly, totally, and banal amateur yuckiness.

    1 out of 5 stars a huge letdown..........2005-12-21

Yeah, it's fun and easy to beat up on remix albums since there are so many mediocre and terrible ones out there... but, wait: here's a great idea... let's give the pioneering, repetitive, trance-like minimalist music of Philip Glass the remix treatment... after all, Reich: Remixed was fabulous... surely the same kind of creativity can be unleashed in this project... But alas, something went terribly wrong here... these are mostly unbearably monotonous, grating, overlong, amateurish productions by remixers who don't seem to even GET (or enjoy?) Glass' music. A real missed opportunity and a huge letdown... ick...

1 out of 5 stars The Ever Recyclable Glass .......2005-11-20

This is just another insipid release from the Orange Mountain label, which keeps putting out anything with the Philip Glass
name on it - even if it is flagrant garbage. Several releases have been issued which about 90% have the same old songs, just performed by different people. In fact, Philip Glass has become more banal and bovine in the last few years because he knows anything with his name on it will sell to the trendy modernistic music crowd. Overall, I believe it is time to stop
    recycling Glass.

1 out of 5 stars Pop music with only a hint of Philip Glass.......2005-10-28

This music should be categorized under the "popular music" category, not "classical". All the pieces have an incessant drum beat typical of popular music. This is unlike any other Philip Glass CD that I have and I have about a dozen of them. Where can I get rid of this?

    3 out of 5 stars Sound Effects.......2005-09-24

When this album was announced, I was quite looking forward to it; before hearing anything, I compared it to the wonderful work done on "Reich Remixed" which takes some daring approaches to Reich's music and does an excellent job (with a few exceptions) of being new and exciting. Unfortunately, Glass Remixed isn't as daring or as good.

Much of the music is overshadowed with Glass's music and themes. It's as if someone was playing the original music in the background and sound effects were added to it. Throughout listening to Remixed, these sound effects got in the way of the music and I ended up digging out the original pieces and listening to them. However, there are some excellent pieces of interpretation contained within: Etude #2, the Tirol Concerto, and the Saxophone Concerto stand out (especially the Saxophone Concerto since I don't care for the original piece).

The other mark against this effort is all the work had to come from the Orange Mountain Music catalog due to ownership complications. This is not to say there aren't outstanding pieces in the catalog, but this restriction limits most of Glass's seminal works from being considered.

As a huge Glass fan, I was mildly disappointed, but I applaud the effort and the concept behind it.

5 out of 5 stars Tenors on Tour - Versatile and Beautiful.......2001-06-20

Tenors on Tour is a CD which will live forever. The opening songs by Placido Domingo, His arrangement of Blue Moon and Moon River, set the tone for the CD. To hear Richard Tucker do "Climb every Mountain" was a wonderful trip down memory lane. Who will ever forget him? Placido continues with Broadway..Maria from West Side Story and a Beatles song "Yesterday". Mandy Patinkin's "Over the Rainbow" is classic and wonderful! But in my opinion Jose Carreras has the most "goose bumping" production on the entire CD. His Ave (Maria) is so beautifully done it may just bring tears to your eyes. The "King" Pavarotti is the "clean-up Hitter with selections from LaBoheme, and he does "O Sole Mio" as only He can do it. This CD is a treat for anyone who enjoys fine music. You will play it over and over again.

One line is all I need to quote: B.J. Ward sings Rusalka's Song to the Moon, and calls Dvorak's Rusalka "Disney's Little Mermaid with a Quentin Tarantino ending" !!!

5 out of 5 stars Opera As Fun Entertainment: Comedian Soprano B.J.Ward.......2005-05-16

Who would have thought opera could be so much fun and make for great comedy ? B.J. Ward is herself a gifted and unique soprano, even if she is not among the ranks of today's most famous. She first heard Licia Albanese sing La Rondine and was hooked on opera ever after. In this recording, taped live at an Embassador's building in New York City, B.J. Ward treats the audience to hilariou stand-up comedy while at the same time singing arias from some of the great, mainstream operas. Hopefully, this will attract the younger folk into opera, for if you can appreciate great comedy styling, surely you can appreciate opera, the best musical and theatrical art form. The cover on the album is also quite catchy. I enjoyed this album a lot. I'm a fan of B.J. Ward, who is to opera what the parodist composer C.P.Q. Bach is to classical music. Other recordings of Miss Ward include Larynx, the Song Bird (I think thats what its called) and Queen of the Night, these are compilation albums of arias sung by the incomparable B.J. Ward. She may not be Renee Fleming, she is surely not Maria Callas, but she is an artist in her own right, with a beautiful voice that is full of her own love for opera. I think she is the closest singer and personality to the personage of Beverly Sills.

Prior to each aria in this album is a bit of stand-up comedy introducing the piece, explaining the scene and plot of the opera. The operas included here are all the big names- Verdi's La Traviata, Puccini's La Boheme ( "both women die of tubercolosis" says B.J. Ward, "only Mimi in Boheme is not as well-dressed ") She has knowledge of opera history, she hates how women are victims in opera, always dying out of love, being screwed over by men (the composers of these operas were sexist men she says but its not like that today). Her wit and humor are very 90's, like a female Jerry Seinfeld, and the arias are exquisite. She sings Vissi D'Arte from Tosca, Como Scoglio from Cosi Fan Tutte, Fiordiligi's difficult showpiece- and she succeeds in singing the whole thing- The Seguidilla from Carmen, in rich mezzo voice, Sempre Libera from Traviata, another coloratura razzle-dazzle piece, with extraordinary strength and acrobatic skill. She sings a rarity, too - "Ernani, Involami" from the early Verdi opera Ernani. She concludes with a tribute to her idol soprano, Licia Albanese in a fine rendition of "Doretta's Dream" aria- Chi Il Bel Sogno Di Doretta. Don't hesitate to buy this album today and enjoy the comedy and operatic stylings of the one and only B.J.Ward...she's a one woman opera in itself.

5 out of 5 stars Opera you can live with...........2002-01-15

B.J. Ward has taken perhaps the most dreaded musical genre and made it not only highly enjoyable but very funny as well...this tour de force of perhaps the greatest female solos written for the operatic stage delivered in the true operatic styling coupled with Ward's pointed wit not only the music and a few arcane (and laughable) plot points combined with a history of opera and age in which it was written makes Stand Up Opera a pleasure...I'm hoping for a sequel

      5 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......2001-09-24

funny; makes me wish I had been at the concert

      4 out of 5 stars you'll laugh you'll cry.......2001-04-03

This is a thoroughly engaging CD. I laughed, I cried...it was shorter than "Cats" She makes many witty observations about opera, but she still shows a great respect for the art form. If you like opera or you want to get to know it better, then I highly recommend this CD to you.
