RCA's 1963 highlights disc brought the stars of the early-1950s revival of the work, Leontyne Price and William Warfield, together again. By this time, however, Price was well advanced on her meteoric rise to operatic stardom and Warfield was gaining renown as a recitalist. Both are glorious here and Price's shimmering "Summertime" is worth the price of the disc. A plus is the spirited Sportin' Life of John W. Bubbles, who created the role in the original 1935 production; an old-time vaudevillian, he wrings fun and irony from his all-too-short excerpts. Henderson conducts with vigor and RCA's "High Performance" sound, when heard on a good system, is remarkable. --Dan Davis

Great CD! Both the singing and orchestrations were perfect! Have played it many times since receiving it.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Achievement.......2006-04-29

This recording of scenes from Gershwin's opera is a stunning achievement and a gem for anyone who loves great music and great singing. Ms. Price was a world-renowned Bess and created a sensation when she toured in the opera's celebrated revival during the 1950's. People unfamiliar with the entire score may be surpised to discover that two famous arias, "Summertime" and
"My Man's Gone Now", aren't sung by Bess. It's thrilling to hear Ms. Price perform these, which were signature pieces
throughout her career. As Porgy, Mr. Warfield toured with Leontyne Price, and the power and poignancy of his characterization are comparable to hers. He is extraordinary in his solos, and his love duet with Ms. Price wil give the listener chills. The chorus and orchestra are superb. Skitch Henderson, former maestro of The Tonight Show, might seem an unusual choice for conductor, but his leadership is skilled, idiomatic, and electrifying. (He was a fine musician and composer who often guest-conducted for symphony orchestras.)
This is a wonderful example of recorded musical drama and will appeal to those who don't consider themselves opera fans as well as to those who do. Highly recommended and a Grammy Award winner.

5 out of 5 stars Great recording.......2006-04-24

OK, so Leontyne Price sings a song on this recording ("My Man is Gone Now")that is not sung by her character (Bess), but what an incredible version of that song! I've never heard any singer match it. This album introduced me to P & B 20 years ago, and I love the CD. I had the pleasure of interviewing William Warfield in 1981; much to my regret I did not yet know this recording.

By the way: I also love the old 1951 recording of the opera (re-released as a CD by Sony in 1998). It is my other favorite, and has over 2 hours of the music. The audio is surprisingly good.

Outstanding cast and performances. Digitally remastered in the new High Performance mode. Sound is spectacular.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2005-04-14

This is the first "Porgy and Bess recording I ever heard, and though it's not complete, it is the BEST. Bess is sung definitively by Leontyne Price, and the Porgy is every bit equal to her performance. Gershwin's music for this opera is amazing. It is jazz and black culture put into operatic form, and you can't get more soulful than that. "Summertime" (my favorite song ever) of course was wonderful, and "My Man's Gone Now" is the saddest thing I have ever heard - you can listen to it over and over. "Bess, you is my Woman Now" makes me cry too, it's so sweet. The acting is convincing as could be wished. As for Sportin' Life, he is played by the creator of the role who was NOT an opera singer but rather a vaudeville star, and chosen by Gershwin himself. At first he seems rather out of place beside the rest of the cast (Leontyne Price, for goodness' sake!) but he grows on you. I once heard a bass rendition of "It Ain't Neccisarily So" that was sung very low and deep, and very straight - and although I'm aware that Sportin' Life is a tenor role, it was a very effective rendition. However, as an indiviudual, this Sportin' Life was not bad at all, and his "There's a Boat dat's Leavin' Soon for New York" was VERY good and almost seductive, I thought.

Really, you couldn't get much better for $12.00!

That's right. Little Bobby Brady should have known who Don Ho was. In fact, it's a shame that more people aren't familiar with Don's great music.

TINY BUBBLES should be a required album in everyone's musical libraries. It's full of great songs.

Album Description

You may know Erlend Øye from Kings of Convenience. The Berlin-based Norwegian singer has been a huge figure in the electronic music scene for years, but with Whitest Boy Alive, his new project with German DJ Marcin Oez, Erlend's gone the opposite route, creating stripped down rock music without layering, editing or effects. The simple combination of drums, bass, guitar and Erlend's breezy, yet intimate voice create a sound that is both funky and melancholy. A truly original pop band making the simplest sounding dance songs in the most organic way, this is one of the best rock albums you will hear this year.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Complex simplicity.......2007-07-07

When I first heard this eagerly anticipated release on a listening station, skipping through tracks to see if it held up to my beloved two Kings of Convenience albums, I was initially disappointed by its deceptive demo-like quality and mix. I walked away unimpressed. Several days later I was having a conversation with a friend who manages a record store and K.O.C.came up. We both confessed our almost embarrassing love of them and their updated take on Simon & Garfunkel. (like everyone says-right or wrong) The two albums they released domestically were instantly classic- a magical throwback to the old days. He asked if I had heard The Whitest Boy Alive album "Dreams". I told him my initial ambivalent impression and he was quite surprised. He actually found it more interesting than K.O.C for the very reasons I stated. Could I have been so wrong? Flummoxed, the next day I ran out and bought it, took it home and put in my player. I must have been in a distracted and negative mood that day I sampled it because what I now heard grabbed me from the first note.
I had thoroughly enjoyed Erlend Oye's two solo records and their explorations into more electronic territories. Compared to the slickness of K.O.C.'s "Riot On An Empty Street" or "Quiet is The New Loud", "Dreams" has a stripped down, almost punk feel to it, like perhaps The Talking Heads before the addition of Jerry Harrison (if you had been lucky enough to have seen them then as I did) or The Cure in the early days and maybe a tiny hint of Tom Verlaine in the guitar sound and is like listening to a three piece, live in a club.
The tunes are strong, complete with the recognizable emotion and sentiment of Erlend's signature writing and voice. It's a great album for any true K.O.C. fan. Don't hesitate like I did- buy it. Oh yeah.... stay away from listening stations. LOL!

5 out of 5 stars whitest boy alive.......2007-04-14

This is surprisingly good. 80's elements (like preeminent bass guitar and 4/4 disco rythms) are mingled with mellow vocals and bluesy guitar licks, guitar work is imaginative and unique throughout the album. But of course main strength is composition, CD keeps a high level of composing from start to finish. You get the feeling that there is a very concrete and coherent vision behind this project. Inflation and Figures are some of my favourites here, but I was totally moved by Done With You, superbe guitars. All in all, a unique and worthy work.

2 out of 5 stars Erland! Oy!.......2007-02-08

After the first track, this album goes downhill fast. Or should I say downhill slow, since the drum machine catches a cold in from track two on, and all we're left with is a bunch of songs with minimal tunes performed at a glacial pace. I liked his last solo album, but he needs to try harder from now on.

4 out of 5 stars DJ's Collaborate on Successful Minimalist Rock Album.......2006-10-21

For years, I have associated this honor? (Whitest Boy Alive) with the likes of Doogie Howser, Elvis Presley's "In the Ghetto", Bill Laimbeer's vertical leap, and the dude from Powder. Today, this moniker took on new meaning, as Norwegian DJ/Kings of Convenience frontman Erlend Oye released his newest side project (hopefully) with German DJ Marcin Oez, aptly entitled "Dreams".

Where the Kings' sound is as comfortable as cashmere in any setting, from drinking poolside Mimosas on a Sunday morning, to cuddling by the fireplace on a winter night, to shopping for a birthday present for your sister at Banana Republic, The Whitest Boy Alive is a little less jazzy and a little more minimalist rock. In most songs, the bass, straightforward drumbreat, and breezy guitar riff carry throughout, making it hard to believe that this is the work of two expert DJ's.

Although I have only listened to the album several times, for fear of overplaying it incessantly and having it lose the charm I associate with Erlend's lyrics, the desired effect works for me. While part of the charm of the singer's hush vocals is making depressing lyrics seem playful and pleasant, tracks like "Done With You" and "Borders" have more of a rainy-day, melancholy tone than previous work. For me, the standout track of the album is "Above You", a funky number that has already claimed a prominent, yet assuredly short-lived stint as my MySpace (is that redundant?) profile song. While it is slightly weak at the break, it kicks in with one of the most pleasant guitar over guitar over keytar riffs of the year in the second chorus.

If you are a fan of the Kings of the Convenience, you should enjoy "Dreams." If you are unfamiliar with the Kings, I would highly recommend checking out "Riot on an Empty Street", which is one of my favorite albums of the decade, before deciding to buy "Dreams".

4 out of 5 stars Groove beats the blues.......2006-09-29

Having done the strictly acoustic thing with Kings of Convenience and travelled the world succesfully for electronic aspiration, Erlend Oye returns with this Berlin-based outfit. Using no electronics and basing songs around a top of the drawer rhythm section dueled by simplistic and charming guitar riffing and Rhodes like the first raindrops falling, "Dreams" succeeed in sheer originality.

Keeping things minimal, groovy and razorsharp, Oye and co will hold you victim before you know it. Standout tracks include trippy "Done with you", "Inflation" featuring the best bass line Andy Rourke didn't get to play on that first "The Smiths" album, the high school-like workout "Golden Cage", the wicked funk of "Above you" and the majestic "Don't give up". Often wrongly termed melancholic, empathic is the right term. It's Oye's interpretation of human emotions that makes these songs the real thing.

"Dreams" has been the soundtrack of my summer, as such I should give it a 5* rating. Having seen the band in concert, I must however reserve the 5 stars for that out of the ordinary ability to cut the songs live. Go see them at any cost, they deliver the best night out around. Thanks guys, you made me smile and dance for a week. Crazy, beautiful and skilled people!

Album Description

On these eleven tracks, the two headstrong musicians dabble in the principle of contingency by taking on the connections between techno and IDM, yet they extend the original horizon with their thoughtful way of production. Ellen Allien's keen sense for a heavy bass-keynote gives Apparat's melancholic superstructure its cathedral of sound-adhesion, and with the involvement of Apparat, Ellen Allien's "brainish" music comes alive again. Together, the two interpenetrate, empathize and move their own artistic borders.

4 out of 5 stars When two become one... and blow the roof off the club!.......2006-07-15

Who would have thought the stutter step of Apparat's derivative IDM added to the abortive electrohouse aesthetic and peevish vox of Ellen Allien could have produced such an amazing synthesis of experimental dance music? By themselves neither are particularly groundbreaking artists, but like aspertame and high fructose corn syrup unite to make tastey sodas Apparat and Allien combine to become something far and away more interesting than their separate abilities could muster. The music is danceable yet nuanced, experimental but not alienatingly so, and the production innovative in its use of otherwise wornout house and nuskool breaks formats. The only caveate I would add to an otherwise stellar review is that Allien's and Apparat's vocal tracks should have been left on the cutting room floor; like Sophia Coppolla in Godfather 3, their horrid singing and nonsensical lyrics almost ruin a stunning LP. Luckily though the album's tracks are evenly split half with vocals and half without - and the have-nots far surpass the haves.

5 out of 5 stars A jaw dropping selection of IDM from this German duo!.......2006-05-13

Ellen Allien, DJ, techno artist, producer, and founder of the BPitch Control record label out of Berlin, teams up with another German producer and artist, Apparat. Prior to Ochestra of Bubbles, Allien's last release Thrills produced some excellent tech house and minimal tracks, but also had too many stale spots for a 10 track album. It wasn't quite as good as her stunning album before that, Berlinette. Now this teaming with Apparat has brought together one of the best electronic artist albums I've ever heard.

Right from the first two standout singles off the album, Turbo Dreams with it's pulsating beats and flowing horn, to Ellen's pop-like vocals on possibly the best track on here, Way Out, you know this is going to be something special. Track 3 was a little downgrade, with it's building strings sounding like a horror or war movie score, but tracks 4-10 were just incredible, eye-popping slices of techno that kept me spellbound through the start of each new track.

The one track voiced by Apparat, Leave Me Alone, is the low point of the album, with some awkward sounding vocals meshed with a very cheesy pop like melody. Right after that is the one boring instrumental on the CD, Edison, a crackily minimal track which literally goes nowhere. The CD closes with an incredible breathy downtempo vocal track sung by breathy, German accented Ellen, which I could have taken a 10 minute dose of instead of the 4:58 time.

I had sampled each track online because after Thrills, I thought it might be a case where I only wanted to download some of the tracks, but when I heard each of the tracks, they all sounded so good I just had to get the whole thing and I am glad I did, as I got 11 out of 13 solid electronic tracks.

FYI: There's already two good remixes out there of Turbo Dreams, plus and elongated track of the album version, and an upcoming remix of Way Out by Robag Wruhme that I just heard of sample of and I'm dying to get my hands on!

4 out of 5 stars Two great sounds that sound great together.......2006-05-12

Last year, Apparat (aka Sascha Ring) released the excellent Silizium EP, which contained the song "It's Gonna Be A Long Walk," one of my favorite songs of 2005. Although I wasn't completely excited about Ellen Allien's last album Thrills, she's been a consistently exciting artist, and I was curious to see what the two would cook up together when it was announced they'd be releasing an album together.

Orchestra Of Bubbles is the result of their efforts, and other than a couple small lags, it's one of the more exciting electronic releases that I've heard in some time. The work of the two artists seems to fit together and overlap just about perfectly as razor sharp beats and cracking production mixes with some nice textures and vocal-driven tracks for a consistently fun album.

"Turbo Dreams" opens the release strong as a gurgling synth bass flows underneath some scorching guitar-esque riffs and crisp beats that snap and pop in all the right places. "Way Out" follows, and it finds Allien adding vocals over a blistering, electro-tinged track that's downright poppy as it progresses through a couple brisk verses and a soaring guitar closing section.

A large part of the album is instrumental, and while the duo manages to keep things together most of the time, they seem to lose focus in a couple places, as on the old-school pitch-bending weirdness of "Do Not Break" and the five-minute "Under," where almost three-fourths of the track passes before much of anything happens. Apparat takes lead vocals on only a single track on the disc, and from the sounds of "Leave Me Alone," he should have maybe done it a bit more often, as the string-laced, lurching track is one of the most outstanding on the album. The short "Metric" is just as solid, tying string stabs with brisk, percolating electro production. An excellent album, Orchestra Of Bubbles should appeal to fans of either artist, or those looking for a slab of brisk electronic pop to blast this summer.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars This isn't pretty.......2006-12-09

Listening to an album like the ludicrously titled Pink Bubbles Go Ape, you have to wonder what was going on in the Helloween guys' heads. They had just released a pair of albums (Keeper of the Seven Keys Parts I and II) that would completely redefine the term power metal, and lost founding guitarist Kai Hansen to his new band Gamma Ray. Instead of releasing another power metal epic that showed the world they were every bit the band they were with Hansen on board, we got Pink Bubbles Go Ape, a bizarre attempt to show off the band's sense of humor with tracks like "I'm Doin Fine, Crazy Man", and "Heavy Metal Hamsters"...that's right, "Heavy Metal Hamsters".

Believe it or not, Pink Bubbles Go Ape is actually a pretty decent melodic rock album. The guys in Helloween are just too good at what they do to put out something truly awful. Unfortunately, pretty decent is simply not good enough, nor is melodic rock. Not from Helloween. This band set the bar quite high with the Keeper albums, and this confused effort falls way too short. Even with standout tracks "Mankind", "Goin' Home", "Your Turn", and "Kids of the Century", the best rating I can give this effort is 3 stars. Unfortunately the downward spiral would continue with the band's follow-up album Chameleon. The good news is that the band would manage to get back to releasing quality power metal albums with 1994's Master of the Rings.

If you're unfamiliar with Helloween's work, for God's sake do not pick this album up first (or even 8th for that matter). Pink Bubbles Go Ape and Chameleon should only be tracked down after you've heard every other studio album Helloween has to offer and you're simply looking to complete your collection.

I must be a glutton for punishment, because I actually bought the expanded edition of Pink Bubbles Go Ape. I guess I couldn't bear to see my old disc sitting in the middle of all of those new Helloween reissues on my shelf! It features digitally remastered sound, expanded liner notes, and four bonus tracks, one of which was a cover of the Carl Perkins staple "Blue Suede Shoes". The bonus tracks fit the wacky and irreverent mood of the rest of the album, which sadly isn't such a good thing.

4 out of 5 stars Underrated even today! A great album with 4 Bonus Tracks.......2006-08-19

Coming out from a law-suit after their label change and a huge line-up change which leaves legendary guitarist-songwriter Kai Hansen out of the band, Helloween come back with "Pink Bubbles Go Ape". A record which was bashed by music critics due to the fact that the band changed their music to a small effect when compared to their highly praised Keeper Of The Seven Keys records.

"Pink Bubbles..." admitably has a really strange, even silly title but this is not the case with the song writing. The music departs a bit from the continuous double-bass drumming, power metal stile and is enriched with more progressive and at parts mainstream ideas. Some songs are softer than the usual tracks found on the Keeper records reminding more of heavy metal than power metal, but that's not a drawback for sure.

Without diving into each and every song, I'm going to name only the outstanding ones! "Mankind" is a great-epic and progressive song with wonderful vocal and musical variations. "The Chance" is a mid-paced heavy metal anthem, which contains some of the albums best vocals and solos and is the most known track from this relish. "Someone's Crying" is the only song that could be categorized as pure power metal (fast double-base drumming & fast guitar soloing), a truly great song, which reminds a lot of their previous albums. "Your Turn" is a wonderful rock-blues ballad with great vocals and finally "Kids of the Century" is another fast song with smart lyrics and great solos.

The new guitarists R.Grapow proves to be a worthy replacement, as his guitar playing is outstanding and he also contributes some great tracks to the album. Vocalist Michael Kiske has improved even more (if that could be possible) in both technicality and emotion delivering his best vocal performance up to that point. While the other 3 band members, especially drummer Ingo and bassist Markus, continue to show how talented musicians they are.

The main drawback of this album was the thin production, but now this relish offers a remaster of the original sound, thus a TRULY improved sound quality. The other drawback are tracks 1,5,9, but the 4 Bonus Tracks make up for that one also, especially You Run With The Pack and the cover of Blue Suede Shoes.

You should definitely give this album a chance, if you enjoyed Helloweens previous relishes, as you can see how the band progresses and doesn't continue repeating itself for the sake of record sales.

Yes, this album followed two enormous ones (keepers 1& 2). However, the musical quality of "Someones Crying" and "Mankind" are some of the best songs that Helloween ever produced as far as lyrics, vocals, guitars, and drums are concerned. And of course "Your Turn" is a nice change for Helloween. The B-Sides "You Run With The Pack" and "S**t and Lobsters" are melodic and talented as well. Some songs on this album such as "Number One" may really turn some people off because it lacks the "metal" feel, however, it is not bad either. I gave this album 4 stars because of the song "Heavy Metal Hamsters." That song is just too cheesy for my taste. If you only like metal then this album may dissappoint you. But if you admire creativity this album is worth getting. Make no mistake though: "Someone's Crying" is one of the fastest songs that Helloween has written.

4 out of 5 stars Trouble for Helloween.......2006-07-20

How do you follow up Two Groundbreaking, Classic albums like the "Keepers I & II" ? Well Helloween decided to put this album out, Pink Bubbles Go Ape. Now Sure, this has good tracks like Kids of The Century, and the amusing Heavy Metal Hamsters, but there are no great tracks here. The band just sounds like they were tapped for ideas, and with a new bigger label, they through stuff together to meet a deadline. Chameleon actually had more recognizeable songs than this.
The bonus tracks Blue Suede Shoe's, S*** and Lobsters, Les Hambourgeois Walkways are again filler, much like Chameleon, and You Run With The Pack is Ok. These were all definine burrried B-Side on singles for a reason.
The Packaging, continuation of the remaster's interview in the booklet with the new slipcase are neat, and it upsets me again that this version cost me less than what I paid for the original disc without bonus tracks.
Again, for a slight Helloween fan, this album can be overlooked. Since I am a Fan, Love complete collections, and feel this packaged deal is a good component to my collection, a 4 is the lowest I can give this album. If I had not been a fan, a 2 or 3 could have been pulled.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow....better than I first thought.........2007-04-12

I came across this CD (from a "Relaxation" series) by accident and thought, oh no, just another compilation of classical music tidbits---and taken from TV commercials/shows yet---oh, spare me! But how wrong I was. Despite its boast of being, "The Most Popular Classical TV Themes in the Universe" title (and because the price was reasonable for a 2-CD set), I bought the CD and was amazed by the quality of the recordings. I was disappointed when neither the manufacturer nor Amazon.com provided a listing of the artists on the recordings; as after hearing some of the tracks, I wanted to buy the artists' complete renditions. My favorite track on this CD, Debussy's "Clair de Lune," is performed so movingly, so stirringly, so hauntingly, that I wish I knew who recorded it. Not all tracks are arranged for orchestra. An example is Handel's "Largo from Xerxes," which is arranged for harp-and-flute, an arrangement which I found delightful and reminiscent of times in the 18th century when the elite held their salons and provided such music at these events. There is no singing on any tracks; it's pure instrumental. I didn't purchase my copy for "relaxation," as the series promotes, for the CD is just as enjoyable to play anytime, anywhere, and especially with a quality headset!

5 out of 5 stars Superlative Big Band Jazz - One of the Best of '03.......2004-01-18

Even at age 70, composer/arranger/pianist Bob Florence continues to challenge himself, his musicians, and his listeners. Without question Florence is one of jazz's top arrangers and while his music has always had been creative and unpredictable, these qualities are perhaps even more to the fore on "Whatever Bubbles Up." In fact, even long-time fans of big band jazz may need at least half-a dozen listens to absorb this superlative CD. But it is well worth the effort, as this music (recorded in 2002) rewards continued attention.

As with Bob's previous CD ("Serendipity" 18) this one incorporates a guitarist (Larry Koonse) into the rhythm section. Overall, the rhythm section, completed by Florence on piano, bassist Trey Henry and drummer Dick Weller, has a loose, adventurous, sometimes unsettled feel which keeps listeners on their musical toes. Of course, this rhythm section can swing hard in a more conventional sense, as behind Jeff Driskill's tenor solo on the opening "Dukeisms" or softly, as on parts of "Kissin' Bug" and Florence's attractive "Q&A". In any case, this well recorded music definitely commands your attention at every turn.

All the Florence trademarks are on this CD, such as the hard-driving repeated riffs which work into the listener's mind, (the title tune and "Running With Scissors"), the quirky and memorable melodic lines, ("Running", "Nerve Endings"), the effective use of dynamics ("Kissin' Bug"), the superb sectional work (hear the trombones on "Chelsea Bridge" or the saxes on "Whatever Bubbles Up"), the shifting moods within a single piece (Q&A), and the impeccable ensemble playing throughout.

This superb 74 minute CD (not 51 as indicated on the cover) bubbles over with creativity, advanced swing and high musicianship. Whenever Bob Florence releases a CD, it has to be considered one of the best jazz CD's of the year and so it is with "Whatever Bubbles Up." Strongly recommended to lovers of advanced big band jazz.

    5 out of 5 stars galactic symphonic.......2005-11-12

This is a stunning followup to the stunning self titled debut. The music follows pretty much in the same direction as the first which would be highly varied and densely textured symphonic prog, not so much because of the metric changes and reversals associated with this genre, but in the evolving and accumulating density of not only the instrumental variety, but in the compositions themselves. Some have compared Cyrille Verdeaux's work to that of Mike Oldfield since he has an organic approach to his music; and the changes evolve naturally and gather to crescendos streaming out to beyond the reaches of the atmosphere. Christian Boule's stunning guitar plays an even more prominant role than in the first album and the large variety of keys, mellotron, and synthesizer are textured with woodwinds, violin, and choir giving this album a huge sonic density. I frequently hear a multitude of melodies evolve simultatiously out of a single riff. Song structures seem to be composed of gentle french hymns which build in color finally evolving into a kind of psychedelic ecstacy. This is highly original and very reccomended music!

5 out of 5 stars Forever Clearlight collector.......2005-09-16

Another Space rock treat French style but with strong British and German space rock influence. This is like Tangerine Dream and Gong performing together.

4 out of 5 stars A fine album much like Hillage.......2002-03-03

I became aware of Clearlight because I was told they were just like Gong. Well, Clearlight was really less a band and more a project lead by French keyboardist Cyrille Verdeaux. The first Clearlight album, released in 1975 on Virgin (back in the good old days when the label was actually concerned about music, not making a fast buck), Clearlight Symphony featured such Gong members as Steve Hillage, Tim Blake, and Didier Malherbe. Forever Blowing Bubbles, also released in 1975 and on Virgin, no longer featured any Gong members, but the guests here include David Cross of King Crimson on violin, Christian Boulé on cosmic guitar (he also appeared live with Steve Hillage on the Live Herald album), Gilbert Artman on drums and percussion, Amanda Parsons and Ann Rosenthal doing celestial choir (they were two thirds of the "Northettes", along with Barbara Gaskin who were responsible for those heavenly female choruses you hear on both of Hatfield & the North's albums), plus too many others to mention. Anyway, Clearlight's Forever Blowing Bubbles sounds a lot less like Gong and more like a symphonic version of Steve Hillage's solo works, particularly Fish Rising. The music is largely instrumental, you won't hear any silly stories about Pot Head Pixies like the Daevid Allen version of Gong or of Eastern and New Age philosophy like you would Hillage's solo works. The presence of piano and Mellotron makes this something you never hear on any Gong or Hillage album (well, a little Mellotron is used on You, but that's it). The opening cut, "Chanson" is a vocal cut, male vocals this time, in French. This sounds like rather typical symphonic prog, not much like Gong or Hillage. There's some violin courtesy of David Cross, and the female chorus from Ann Rosenthal and Amanda Parsons. The second cut, "Without Words" starts off with piano and synth, but it's the middle part that sounds very much like Hillage, especially the guitar solo, and then it ends with a rather atmospheric, Pink Floyd-like Hammond organ. The next cut, "Way" is a stroke of genius. It starts off with some cool wordless vocals and Mellotron choir sounds before the piano kicks in letting David Cross show what he's made of, then when the synthesizers kick in, the speed of the music gets faster and faster (thanks to slowing down the tape when recording it and playing it at normal speed). These first three songs represents side one of the LP. Unfortunatley I find side two a little less remarkable. "Ergotrip" is just one of those cuts that seems to go nowhere, luckily the next cut that segues in to it, "En Pendandt Ce Temps La" is much better and harkens to the best moments of side one. "Narcisse et Goldmund" features a female vocalist named Brigette Roy singing in French. It sounds a little out of place and it seem more in the French chanson style, but it's still a nice piece, paricularly because the Mellotron is used. Unfortunately I find the closing cut, "Jungle Bubbles" a bit anticlimatic, because it's just a bunch of VCS-3 synth bubble sounds and percussion and little else. But despite my complaints, if you wondered how Hillage might have sounded like if he went for a more symphonic approach by adding piano and Mellotron, get Clearlight's Forever Blowing Bubbles.
