Dull Epics.......2006-09-27
EPICS is plagued by the muddled sound of TELARC's recordings. I noticed this trend beginning with TELARC's Hollywood's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. The recoding seems flat. Also, this recording is a bit bombastic and just not representative of the original scores. The Suite from Gladiator is a good case in point. It glosses right over the basic themes presented in the film with an annoying nonce lance.
Very Disappointing .......2006-09-27
EPICS is very disappointing. It is nowhere up to the usual standards of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. The recordings are harsh and just too showy. There is no heart, only might and if these are supposed to be epics, what is MINORITY REPORT doing there?
Chilling versions of the best scores ever written.......2004-04-24
This cd is an essential for any person that particularly enjoys the score in films. Epics is a full length cd containing 14 songs performed by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under Erich Kunzel.
Usually, I am weary of cds that come out with songs from movies that aren't the original recordings, but I have to say there should be no worries with this cd. The songs remain exactly the same in tempo and sound as you hear them in the movies.
The choices for this cd was amazing. Every song that you hear are the songs that make the movie it is in, most often giving you chills and goosebumps as the music encompasses you into the movie (like what happened to me when I saw Lord of the Rings). From the Theme from 2001: a Space Oddysey to Star Wars: Attack of the Clones to Lord of the Rings, these songs are performed beautifully with a clear and crisp sound.
I am hoping for an Epics II to be released someday, but in the meantime, check this out, you will NOT be dissappointed!

I miss the old days.......2006-06-10
While the original compositions that this recording is based off of were all notable compositions, worthy of recognition and inclusion on a compilation disc such as this, it pains me to say that the Telarc/Cincinatti team has fallen from glory with this one (and a few others). Contrary to other reviewers, Kunzel was not the arranger for most or all of these. Someone named Jospeh Price, a name I hope never to see again on a Telarc recording unless immediately preceded by the words "not arranged by". I cannot stomach his cliched, bombastic, and empty endings most of all, but the arrangement (or despoiling of) the Lord Of The Rings themes is probably the worst mustical travesty I've come across. There is no resemblance to the original work except by accident. The only tracks I care for at all on the disc are the ones untouched by him, including the Overture from Lawrence of Arabia, the Harry Potter themes (apparently a Williams arrangement), and perhaps another track or two. Overall a painful experience. Try some vintage Kunzel instead.
Terrific!.......2004-05-03
Simply goes to show that good music is more than the composition: Arranging and conducting are the other elements which Eric Kunzel is a master at. The "Magnificent Seven" is a masterpiece of knowledge of the intent of the piece, instrumentation and clever ways of brining out the best that each instrument has to offer.
Fabulous compilation of movie themes!.......2004-01-25
This is one of the best movie theme compilations I have come across in a long time. With Erich Kunzel's able hands, the beautiful themes from "The Lord of the Rings," "Gladiator," "Harry Potter," "Dr. Zhivago," "Lawrence of Arabia," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Ben Hur" and others are vividly brought to life.
My favorite has to be the "Fellowship of the Ring" suite which, at over 6 minutes, is the longest track in the CD. It includes the fabulous themes I love from the film such as the Hobbiton, Mines of Moria, Amon Hen, Isengard and Breaking of the Fellowship themes from the original soundtrack. The "Gladiator" suite comes as a close second but there really isn't a mediocre theme music in this collection. Erich Kunzel has done a fabulous job of selecting, orchestrating and arranging these wonderful pieces and I consider this one of the best classical CDs in my collection. Superb!
"the grand scale of film music ~ Kunzel & the Pops".......2003-11-18
If it's powerful and majestic music you're looking for, you've come to the right place with Telarc's release of "Epics", featuring the world renown Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under the direction of maestro Erich Kunzel. Flawlessly recorded with exceptional detail from Direct Stream Digital (masters made during the recording sessions with the Sony/Philips DSD recording system) and it shows, believe you me you've never heard anything like it.
In most cases the performances closely match the original film score themes ~ listening to this album is like watching the film all over again, as the tension builds up and the release is right in your face ~ just like being there. Quality sound is the reason to purchase this CD, simply amazing.
Many "film-score-buffs" will already have some or many of the cues in their collections ~ but for the avid collector this is a dream come true. All under one umbrella is Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Tan Dun, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Max Steiner, John Williams and Hans Zimmer doing what they do best...composing!
Listen to the scores within "BEN HUR", "CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON", "DOCTOR ZHIVAGO", "HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE", "GLADIATOR", "GONE WITH THE WIND", "LAWRENCE OF ARABIA", "LORD OF THE RINGS:THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING", "MAGNIFICENT SEVEN", "MINORITY REPORT", "PEARL HARBOR", "SPARTACUS", "STAR WARS, EPISODE II:ATTACK OF THE CLONES" and "2001:A SPACE ODYSSEY" many Golden Globe nominees and winners, while others were Academy Award nominations and winners ~ whatever category they fell in...they were all winners on the grand scale of "Epic Film Music" ~ gotta love it!

Ted Nugent & Lemmy!.......2005-08-22
Buy it because the world's best rock stars are on it: Ted Nugent & Lemmy. Disagree? You're stupid.
Rockin'.......2003-05-20
An interesting compilation here, and surprisingly one of the only tribute albums to date about the legendary 'Queen'
The record itself is a compilation of Queen tracks (mostly B-sides it has to be said - not that that makes them bad of course!) by various induviduals rather than a specific band. Many of the artists are playing evidently here for the first time together and some times it comes off and sometimes it does not. One thing to state before even thinking of this CD, is that it is NOT a Queen CD - not stating the obvious here, but dont expect to here songs in the style of Queen, this is more the songs in the style of the respective artist... and again, this sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't.
Firstly the good - by far the best track on the album is the final one - a version of 'Its Late' by what effectivley is the band Anthrax, this is a really, really superb track and is severley kick [...] in every way - dare i even say it, but it may even be better than the original....certainly much more heavier. Also very notable is Lemmy (from Motorhead) singing again a hard metal version of 'Tie your Mother Down' - really good here to here a classic metal singer in Lemmy belt out a Queen classic in his own unique style.
As far as the bad side goes, there are no particularly 'bad' performances from any artists but more just a feeling of anti climax on songs that could have been done much better - such as 'Another One Bites the Dust' which all in all was a bit of a let down. It also really frustrated me that in the actual track listing for the CD it does not detail the actuall origin of the artist, rather just there unrecognisable name, but upon research you find this compilation has tracks performed by members of The Doors, Kiss, Whitesnake, The Who, Megadeath and Black Sabbath.
But despite this name list I wont lie to you - the odd hairspray band sneaks into this album and some performances sound like they real 80's tracks and in honest a bit cringworthy..... but the big name list mentioned above more than makes up for this.
Over all this album is good, and I would recomend it to any Queen fan, but would suggest it is purchased by fans who like there music nosiey and loud and in general this album is for metal fans rather than the housewives and trainspotters who know the words to Bohemian Rhapsody (incedently NOT featured on this album).
For those who love Queen, and like there music kick [...], buy this album!!
If you miss Queen..........2003-04-23
...this isn't a bad tribute. I bought this because there are some recognisable musicians here who have done their best to sing and play Queen. Ain't nothing wrong with that. Great songs are great songs even if these guys don't sound like Freddy. I didn't buy it expecting they would. What captures the Queen spirit though is Lemmy's version of Tie Your Mother Down. Most people don't get it, but Lemmy personifies the song. And Ted Nugent blazes on the guitar. Here's to Queen anyways....
Awesome.......2002-03-22
Listen to Jeff Scott Soto's Save Me!! Freddie who?
Wonderful Queen Tribute...if you take it for exactly that!!.......2001-08-07
I see these stuck up snobbish fans denounce any tribute to Queen stating that it is no where as good as the original. Well duh! If you want the original buy the original! Of course no one is better than Queen, or even as good, at doing their own songs. But take a tribute for what it is: A Tribute! These people love Queen, they acknowledge that Queen is an incredible inspiration and they wish to show their love and admiration by covering a song, or making a cover CD. I like hearing different interpretations of Queen songs. How would other people have done it? This CD is amazing in my eyes. Hearing the different styles mixed together. Not just different bands, but different members of various bands coming together to pay homage to the most wonderful band, Queen. I give it a 4 though for two reasons. Lemmy should not sing in the first place, let alone attempt a QUeen song. His gutteral moanings of Tie Your Mother Down makes a person cringe. No matter the song, Lemmy should be mute! And then there is Yngwie Malmsteen...His is not an homage or tribute, but just another chance to try to emphasize that he is a god of guitar...in his own mind anyway. To me a cover song should at least still be recognizable, but when Yngwie does his solo on his song he twists it into something that is not QUeen at all. Otherwise, my most favorable impression of the album is James LaBrie of Dream theatre. A truely remarkable singer in his own right, highly influenced by Queen himself. This album is worth getting, just keep in mind that it is a tribute, and it is not Queen. :)

The first REAL review.......2003-10-12
Made in UK in 2003, Serial# VPTMQ-004-CD, Playing Time 92:04
I usually don't bother writing a review if 3 people or more have already done so; I simply try to cover "obscure" releases to help fellow music lovers.
But I just HAD to make an exception this time because the earlier reviews are just misguiding...
"Dragon Attack" is an album that captures on a 2-CD set a concert performed in Tokyo during the "Then & Now" tour back in 1990. It features Geoff Downes, Carl Palmer, John Wetton (that's 3 of the original 4 members), along with Pat Thrall on guitar.
There are no credits or liner notes on the packaging, but being an avid listener to "anything Asia", I just had to pick this up...
The recording quality is somewhat muffled, but I've heard A LOT worse!; I should have guessed that since the label is called "Trade Mark of Official Quality"... (would one have to make such a claim if it were true?) and the fact that the band did NOT commission this release is a sure give-away. But the performances are fantastic!!!
Of special mention is Wetton's work on "Rendezvous 6:02" (originally from his days in the band "UK"), followed by "Book Of Saturday" (originally performed while he was in King Crimson.)
The "Live Nottingham" album (an official release) was much better recorded, but comes short of this 2-CD set by about 30 minutes: they had omitted the 2 tracks mentionned above, plus Geoff Downes' keyboards solo of about 6 minutes as well as Carl Palmer's always-impressive drums solo, which also lasts about 6 minutes.
"Dragon Attack" is not for the casual Asia listener; but for the completist like me, it provides a complete show, including the band's attempt at making the Tokyo crowd sing-along during "Heat Of The Moment" (listed on the tray as "Heart of the Moment").
Great music, but a poor recording... hence the average rating.
What's The Deal..................?.......2003-10-06
I read the reviews on this release and am curious as to who are the band members. Who is the original member, and what year was this recorded? Where was this recorded? If someone knows this information please respond.
Thanks!
Stay Away From This!!.......2003-10-03
Another [...], poorly recorded record by a shadow of a once great band. Only one original memember left... trying to make a buck when this gig should be put out to pasture. Recycled material. Stick with Live in Nottingham. Even the Moscow Live CD is better. Either put out new material or give it up. How many greatest hits & live CDs are enough?
DON'T BUY.......2003-09-23
BAD LIVE RECORDING. VERY MUDDLED. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY

Customer Reviews:
The Fantasy Album.......2007-05-09
You can't have too many Sci-Fi albums. This is a good addition to anyone's collection. A good crosssection of SF music. It even has music from The Thief of Bagdad from the 30s(?)
nice release from Silva.......2005-08-15
As with most of the recent Silva America releases, Silva Screen has compiled older recordings from previous CDs and added some new material exclusively for this release. In this case, Silva has recorded music from The first Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings films, both Mummy films and Gladiator. I'm not sure what else is new, but combine these excellent tracks with golden age material from Hermann and Rozsa, and some Elfman (Batman, Edward Scissorhands) and Williams (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Witches of Eastwick) for good measure, you have a heckuva compilation.
The performance is first rate with only the Raiders March being a subpar track.
Outstanding Fantasy Scores from Hit Fantasy Movies.......2003-04-05
If you're looking for some fantasy role-playing game backround music to play or just like mostly classical fantasy-esque music, this double CD contains excellent scores wrapped in whopping total of 140+ minutes worth of music.
Classic music from your favorite hit fantasy and action movies are found all over this huge, quality collection. You'll hear suites and sounds from outstanding films like Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Willow, The Mummy, Harry Potter, Excalibur, Conan, Highlander, Batman, Edward Scissorhands and more.
A recent (2002) and impressive collection of musical scores, and by far the best CDs I've personally bought for fantasy themed music.
"successful formula from Silva spells Classic all the way".......2002-09-24
History repeats itself with this latest compilation from Silva Screen "Fantasy Album:Adventure & Fantasy at the Movies", a heap of music to digest within the twenty-eight tracks. All beautifully arranged and conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine with the City Of Prague Orchestra in full force...with the helping hand of David Temple (choir master) of the Crouch End Festival Chorus. A perfect blend from brew master James Fitzpatrick(producer) who has impeccable foresight and taste in film music.
What I most enjoy about Silva, is the fact they always have the lesser recorded selections within the big picture...take for instance "THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD"(1958), "THE THREE WORLDS OF GULLIVER" (1960), "MYSTERIOUS ISLAND" (1961) and "JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS" (1963), all four composed by Bernard Herrmann who is in a class by himself, they'll never be another.
But for my money the highlight picks are "GLADITOR"(2000), Hans Zimmer's recreation of the spectacle that was Romes, with man against man, man against beast and the armies that clashed and fell under the powerful story that unfolds within this suite from the film ~ "BEETLEJUICE", "EDWARD SCISSORHANDS" and "BATMAN", each from the films of Tim Burton still ring true within the realm of great direction and storytelling, this can only be topped by composer Danny Elfman who adds the frosting to an appetizing treat ~ "LEGEND" (1985), can faeries, goblins, woodland spirits mix well with the Lord of Darkness...only the legendary Jerry Goldsmith can conjure up a tune to drive the entire cast into a frenzy with "FARIE DANCE/REUNITED", this is the stuff nightmares are made of with a happy ending of course.
With composers like Tan Dun, Randy Edelman, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, James Horner, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Brian May, Jerome Moross, Carl Orff, Basil Poledouris, Miklos Rozsa, Howard Shore, Alan Silvestri, John Williams and Hans Zimmer...one can only hope this will last forever. Silva, I don't know how you do it, but keep them coming...gotta love it!
Total Time: Disc One 71:43 on 15 Tracks & Disc Two 73:48 on 13 Tracks ~ Silva

Don't waste your money!.......2000-11-23
This most wretched of "tributes" should never have been released if for no other reason than to spare the artists their humiliation. I have yet to hear a collection of "singers" who warbled as badly as these people did. This album was released in the late 90's yet sounds more appropriate for the "hair metal" 80's. Why this is even called a "tribute" is beyond me. In fact, I'm not even sure why I've wasted my time including it here.About the only fun to be had is the cover of "Tie Your Mother Down" by Lemmy Kilmister (of Motorhead) and Ted Nugent. They sounded as if they recorded it after a night of drinking, playfully changing the lyrics around, etc.Regardless of that, this release is a complete waste.

Love it!.......2004-04-09
As a fan of the tv show and this film I adore this soundtrack! I was skeptical at first because so many film soundtracks are hacks of the original music etc. This soundtrack is an epic masterpiece! This isn't your typical anime soundtrack as it sounds like something John Williams would do etc.. The songs are short by themselves but flow WONDERFULLY if you listen to it in it's entirety which is how it's supposed to be listened to. Its a whole new journey for fans of the film and tv show.
I like how the sounds are melded, it's not just strings and wind instruments but some keyboards also. Now it does have the tv show Nadesico feel on a few songs but it goes into Epic territory instead of silly fun songs, think full orchestra with LOTS of feeling! It's a welcome addition to any nadesico fan who likes the movie and enjoyed the music. It's for the completist like myself!
